Key Similarities:
- The Bear and Layla mattresses are both all-foam with multiple memory foam layers and a base layer of high-density foam. They each provide a traditional memory foam feel.
- These mattresses scored similarly for spinal alignment in our lab assessment. You can expect excellent sleeping posture on both.
- They also scored closely on responsiveness, meaning the mattress surface moves with you when you change position. You won’t feel like you are rolling back into the impression your body made in the memory foam because the foam will have already bounced back to place.
- Both Layla and Bear offer a nearly unheard of lifetime warranty on their mattresses.
Key Differences:
- Layla scored significantly higher on motion transfer, meaning it does a better job at isolating movement on the mattress surface.
- The Bear mattress incorporates multiple cooling technologies, including Celliant yarn and graphite-infused foam. It sleeps much cooler than Layla’s mattress.

Bear Mattress Review Highlights
- Graphite in the comfort layers of foam is high in thermal conductivity. That means it regulates temperature, so you have a cooler mattress surface.
- Sleeping posture is just as important as waking posture. The Bear mattress keeps your spine aligned all night, so you don’t wake with back pain and stiffness.
- Both graphite and Celliant yarn do an excellent job at regulating the temperature underneath your body. The Bear scored 9/10 for cooling in our assessment, which is surprisingly high for a memory foam mattress.
- Bear also offers a hybrid model: the Bear Hybrid.

Layla Mattress Review Highlights
- The Layla is a flippable mattress, meaning you can choose to sleep on either side. The softer side has 3 inches of foam, rated 4/10 on the firmness scale. The firmer side is 1 inch thick and is 7/10. You get to choose between 2 different firmness options when you buy 1, the Layla works well for all sleeping positions.
- The foam in Layla’s mattress is infused with copper, which Layla says reduces inflammation.
- Copper also improves temperature regulation. When you lie down on the foam layers, your body weight causes the copper particles to conduct and move heat down and away from your body.
- When you buy a Layla mattress, you get a bed life with their forever warranty. If your mattress ever stops performing, according to the standards defined in Layla’s warranty, they’ll repair or replace your bed as long as you’re the original owner.
- You can also explore the Layla Hybrid model.

Compare Inside Materials
Curious what each of these beds looks like on the inside? Take a look through our layers breakdown.

Inside the Bear Mattress
- Celliant Yarn Cover: The Bear mattress cover is woven with Celliant yarn that doesn’t lose effectiveness, even after years of use and washing.
- Graphite-Infused Foam: This open-cell foam layer moves heat away from your body 7x better than traditional memory foam, according to Bear. It also cradles your pressure points.
- Transition Foam: The transition layer is made of what Bear calls their “hybrid foam.” It has the cushion of foam and the responsiveness of a latex mattress, without actually using latex.
- High Density Support Foam: A thick layer of durable foam keeps the Bear mattress from sagging and also prevents your body from sinking too far into the mattress.

Inside the Layla Mattress
- Copper-Infused Memory Foam: The soft side of the mattress is thicker than the firm side. It’s infused with copper that is cooling, calming, and antimicrobial. The memory foam contours to your curves, providing pressure relief to bones and joints.
- Air Flow Foam Layer: Beneath the soft layer is a foam grid that resembles an egg carton. The dips in the foam improve airflow, which helps to keep you cool.
- Base Layer: This high-density support foam improves the mattress’s motion isolation and durability.
- Copper-Infused Memory Foam: Like the soft side, the firm side is infused with copper that eases inflammation and absorbs heat. This layer provides what Layla calls “variable support”; in other words, your body weight activates the supportive properties in the foam. The more weight on the foam, the more support you get.
- Removable Cover: All 4 layers are wrapped in a cooling fabric cover.

Final Summary: Which Is the Best Mattress?
With such close scores in our lab evaluation, neither mattress is clearly better than the other; however, some sleepers might prefer one over the other. When deciding which to buy, think about your sleeping position, budget, sleep environment, and preferred buying experience.
- Sleeping position: The Layla offers better pressure relief for side sleepers, but the Bear provides slightly better spinal alignment for all sleep positions.
- Budget: The Bear is marginally more affordable than the Layla. Both companies offer financing.
- Sleep Environment: Layla has better motion isolation for those with sleeping partners, while the Bear keeps hot sleepers more cool.
- Buying Experience: Both companies offer a 120-night trial period, which can be helpful for those needing more time to decide.
Sleeping Position
Your sleeping position plays a big role in choosing the right firmness level of your mattress. Side sleepers need enough cushion to relieve pressure on shoulders and hips. Back and stomach sleepers need a combination of light cushion and support.
Bear’s memory foam mattress is 6.5/10 on the firmness scale, which suits most sleeping positions. It’s not too firm for side sleepers, but not so soft that your spine is misaligned. It works well for the average sleeper, although side sleepers should take note of Layla’s significantly higher score for pressure relief.
Layla’s mattress has two firmness levels—the soft side is 4/10 on the firmness scale, and the firm side is 7/10. Side sleepers will prefer the soft side, and stomach and back sleepers will like the firm side. You can try both sides to see which works best for you, regardless of how you sleep.
Combination sleepers will be pleased to learn that both mattresses received sky-high scores for responsiveness. Layla earned 9.5/10 and Bear earned 9/10, so you can expect both beds to quickly adjust to changes in position while you sleep.
Budget
Budget-conscious shoppers will pay less for a Layla mattress. While Bear’s mattress costs almost $200 more than Layla’s, both companies have relatively affordable price-points for memory foam mattresses. They also both offer financing through Affirm, so you can make monthly payments on your new mattress.
Sleep Environment
If you sleep with a partner or pet, a mattress with low motion transfer ensures that you won’t be disrupted by the movements of those sharing your bed. In this category, Layla scored higher than Bear, with 9/10 in our evaluation. That makes it a better choice for light sleepers or those concerned about being jostled by nighttime movements.
Hot sleepers and those in warmer climates need a bed that keeps them cool. Traditional memory foam has a reputation for trapping heat beneath sleepers’ bodies, and Bear confronts this challenge by incorporating multiple clinically-tested cooling technologies. It scored 9/10 for cooling, while Layla scored 7/10, so those with night sweats or warm environments will feel more comfortable on a Bear mattress.
Buying Experience
Both mattress companies provide free shipping and returns in the continental US. If you choose not to keep your Bear or Layla mattress, you’ll get a free refund (minus original shipping costs for residents of Alaska and Hawaii). Both companies also pick up your returned mattress and donate them to local charities.
Bear and Layla each offer standard sleep trial periods, giving you 120 nights to make your decision. Both companies also offer a lifetime warranty.
We love both of these memory foam mattresses. Whichever you choose, we’re confident that you’ll sleep soundly and wake rested!
