A Beginner’s Guide to Luxury Mattresses

The most obvious thing that sets a luxury mattress apart from a regular mattress is price. A queen-size luxury mattress could cost $2,000 or more, although direct-to-customer brands that sell online usually offer them cheaper. Also, paying more means getting more. Here are some of the areas where high-end mattresses typically outperform budget mattresses:

  • Durability. A combination of high-quality materials and solid workmanship should give your luxury mattress a longer lifespan. While the upfront cost is greater, it could be a decade or more before you need to replace it.
  • Customizability. Luxury air beds usually feature a remote control that lets you adjust the firmness level. Other types of mattresses, such as memory foam or hybrids, have dual-sided designs with different firmness options.
  • Deals and bonuses. Luxury mattress brands often do bundle deals. For example, if you buy a specific mattress, you might get two free pillows, a free set of sheets, or a free mattress protector.
  • White glove delivery: This means that the person who delivers your mattress will also set up in your bedroom and remove your old mattress. It’s a specialty service that’s typically included in the price.
  • Environmental stewardship: Luxury mattress companies frequently use organic materials in their products and support environmental causes, such as planting trees for every mattress they sell.

Types of Luxury Mattresses

The first thing you want to consider when searching for a luxury mattress—or any mattress—is the type of material it’s made with. Luxury mattresses tend to use memory foam, springs, latex, or put them all into a hybrid design.

  • Memory foam. You’re usually going to want viscoelastic foam or another type of high-density foam that offers pressure relief and responsiveness. Some luxury memory foam mattresses are also made with additional materials that help keep the bed cool.

  • Innerspring. For this type of mattress to be considered luxury, it has to be made with pocket coils. The springs are individually wrapped, which helps isolate motion to keep you from waking your sleep partner (or yourself) from a good night’s sleep. You also want a lower coil gauge because that makes the mattress more supportive.

  • Latex. Luxury latex mattresses can be even more responsive and longer-lasting than memory foam. Some of them use organic latex rather than synthetic latex, which makes them hypoallergenic, resistant to dust mites, and of course, chemical-free.

  • Air bed. Don’t confuse an air bed with an air mattress. Rather than simply inflating or deflating like a balloon, an air bed is designed with multiple chambers that let you adjust the bed’s firmness using a ventilation system.
  • Hybrid. Luxury hybrid mattresses are a combination of these materials, using each one to target a specific need. That way, you get more contouring, pressure relief, and responsiveness.

How to Find a Great Luxury Mattress

So you’ve decided that a luxury mattress is right for you, but when it’s time to change your mattress, how do you find the right replacement? There are a few things to consider when looking for a good, high-quality mattress.

Sleep position

What position do you sleep in? The answer to this question instantly points you in the right direction for your mattress type.

  • Side sleepers. Side sleepers are looking for a bed with pressure relief, primarily for their hips and shoulders. This sleep type should be looking for a latex or a gel memory foam mattress. These mattresses evenly distribute your weight and take pressure away from sensitive areas.
  • Back sleepers. People who sleep on their backs need a mattress that evenly contours to their body but doesn’t disrupt the spine’s natural curve. For this reason, latex, foam, and hybrid luxury mattresses win out over the rest.
  • Stomach sleepers. Stomach sleepers need a mattress that is firm enough so they can lie flat, but with a soft top layer to ease pressure off of the hips. Multi-layered memory foam and hybrid models work the best for this position.
  • Combination sleepers. Combo sleepers need a super responsive mattress that is going to adapt to all of the tossing, turning, and position shifting. Hybrid mattresses are key for these sleepers. They have the adaptability for the changes.

Support

A luxury mattress should provide exceptional support that keeps your head and neck aligned. It should also keep pressure to a minimum on your hips and shoulders.

Firmness

With many regular mattresses, the firmness level is static. Many luxury air beds offer adjustable firmness, with up to 50 levels to choose from.

Cooling

If heat is what’s keeping you from a great night’s sleep, look for a luxury mattress that specifically addresses cooling. Latex is naturally cool, high-quality memory foam includes gel and breathable layers, and hybrid beds combine both.

Size

Luxury mattresses generally come in standard bed sizes, though you can customize this with some luxury brands. Here are the sizes you should expect:

  • Twin: 38″x 74″
  • Full: 54″x 74″
  • Queen: 60″x 80″
  • King: 76″x 80″

Sleep partner

A good luxury mattress for couples is responsive, has good edge support, and (most importantly) offers motion isolation. Memory foam is more effective at limiting motion transfer than innerspring.

Aches and pains

If you or your sleep partner suffers from nighttime aches and pains due to surgery, over-exertion, age, or an injury, buy a mattress that scores well for pressure relief and responsiveness. When mattress shopping, look for a luxury mattress that specifically mentions pain or pressure relief.
