The Helix Midnight Luxe is one of Helix’s luxury mattresses. This hybrid mattress combines individually encased coils with multiple comfort layers to achieve the right balance of support and cushion for back sleepers and side sleepers. This mattress is an excellent choice for back sleepers with acid reflux who want to try and transition to sleeping on their left side (the best sleeping position for those with reflux).

Thanks to zoned lumbar support offered by the layer of innerspring coils, this mattress achieves incredible spine alignment. With cooling phase change material in the pillow top, gel-infused memory foam, and breathable pocketed coils, the Lux doesn’t trap body heat. For hot sleepers, the Midnight Luxe can provide the cooling support that you need for a good night’s sleep.

When you lie down on the Loom & Leaf mattress, your hips will be supported while your shoulders ease into the contouring foam. Consequently, this mattress offers exceptional spine alignment and pressure relief, easing aches and pain.

Because of its high-quality construction and zoned support, the Loom & Leaf is one of the few memory foam mattresses well-suited for heavy sleepers. Unlike other foam beds, people who weigh over 230 pounds won’t sink too far into the mattress. For this reason, the Loom & Leaf is an excellent option for heavy side sleepers who need extra cushion and support.

The Brooklyn Aurora mattress is a hybrid mattress that comes in 3 firmness levels—soft, medium, and firm. This range of options allows you to choose the best mattress for your sleeping position. Soft is best for side sleepers, and is therefore also a good choice for those with acid reflux. The medium is perfect for back sleepers and the firm for stomach sleepers.

The Brooklyn Aurora is one of few hybrid mattresses that’s truly plush enough for side sleepers. Its ample cushioning comes from three layers of memory foam above the support layer of pocketed coils. Thanks to the layer of innerspring coils, the Aurora delivers responsiveness that rarely accompanies a plush mattress. As such, the Brooklyn Aurora soft mattress is one of the best mattresses for side sleepers who change positions during the night.

When we analyzed the Brooklyn Aurora in our mattress lab, we were astounded by how cool it slept. The Brooklyn Aurora is one of the coolest mattresses that we’ve seen. Thanks to cooling foam technology and airflow through the pocketed coils, even the hottest sleeper will enjoy a reprieve.

Lastly, couples who sleep together benefit from the unique combination of excellent motion isolation and responsiveness. What this means is that it’s easy to switch positions, all without disrupting your partner’s slumber.

Best Mattress for Acid Reflux Buyer’s Guide

Acid reflux is a symptom of the medical condition gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). There are scientifically-proven ways to sleep better with acid reflux. Knowing what sleep positions and types of mattresses hurt and help reflux symptoms can put you on the path towards restful sleep.

In this guide, we’ll tell you about:

man suffering from stomach pain at night, health problem, ulcer discomfort

Best Sleeping Position for Acid Reflux

When you lie down with acid reflux, your lower esophageal sphincter relaxes, allowing stomach acid to travel up the esophagus. Heartburn, coughing, and a sore throat can dramatically harm sleep quality, leaving you groggy throughout the day.

There is one position that’s recommended for people fighting acid reflux, and that’s sleeping on your left side. “A helpful sleeping position for those with acid reflux is sleeping on your left side,” says Dr. Ramchandani.

Both back sleeping and sleeping on the right side exacerbate reflux symptoms. When you lie in these positions, the lower esophageal sphincter muscle relaxes, allowing stomach contents to travel up the esophagus to the throat. A burning sensation and coughing can make it hard to sleep in these positions.

Sleeping on our back or right side can exacerbate symptoms. The best option is to sleep on your left side with your upper body elevated by using an adjustable frame or wedge pillow.

While sleeping on your stomach doesn’t worsen symptoms to the same degree as back sleeping, this position is bad for your back and neck. Over time, you’re likely to experience pain when you sleep on your stomach.

What Type of Mattress is Best for Acid Reflux?

Not all mattresses are ideal for people who experience acid reflux. We’ve explored the pros and cons of each type of mattress for people with GERD

Innerspring Mattress

Innerspring mattresses are the type of bed that most of us grew up using. The support and responsiveness comes from a layer of innerspring coils, delivering a reliable firmness.

Innerspring mattresses, by definition, have minimal padding above their coil layer. Due to a lack of cushion, traditional coil mattresses tend to fall on the firmer side. They do not provide the plush feel needed by side sleepers

Because GERD patients will find the greatest symptom relief when sleeping on their left side, innerspring beds are not the best type of mattress for those who experience heartburn at night.

Memory Foam Mattress

Memory foam mattresses are one of the best choices for people with reflux. All-foam mattresses are on the softer side, cushioning pressure points and contouring to the body’s curves. The plush feel of memory foam beds is ideal for side sleepers, making this mattress type an excellent option for those who sleep on their left side for reflux relief.

Another attribute that makes memory foam mattresses a good fit for those with acid reflux is that they can be used with adjustable frames. These bed frames allow you to elevate your upper body, using gravity to keep acid from coming back up the esophagus.

Latex Mattress

Latex mattresses fall between innerspring and memory foam beds when it comes to their firmness level. Most latex mattresses are medium-firm beds best for back, side, and combination sleepers.

As latex mattresses aren’t as soft as memory foam beds, they aren’t as good for those with acid reflux. However, they are a solid option for those who cannot manage to switch to sleeping on their left side all night long.

Latex mattresses can be used with adjustable frames. When acid reflux patients sleep in an elevated position, it can alleviate symptoms. And that’s not all that’s great about latex mattresses. They sleep cool and are some of the best mattresses for the environment.

Hybrid Mattress

Hybrid mattresses are excellent for people with GERD. The best hybrid mattresses for acid reflux are those with ample comfort layers designed to lessen pressure at areas like the hips and shoulders.

Additionally, look for a hybrid mattress that can be paired with an adjustable bed frame. This allows for an elevated sleeping position when extra relief is needed.

Mattress Accessories for Acid Reflux and GERD

Wedge Pillow

Wedge pillows are an inexpensive and effective tool against acid reflux. A wedge pillow is a triangular-shaped pillow made from firm, high-density polyurethane foam. When placed underneath the body, the wedge pillow elevates the head above the stomach, using gravity to lessen GERD symptoms

What’s great about a wedge pillow is that it can be used with any mattress type. Additionally, you won’t need to buy a new mattress or expensive base to reap the benefits of elevation on reflux.

Adjustable Base

“Elevating your upper body can alleviate GERD symptoms, so purchasing an adjustable base may be a wise choice for you if your acid reflux is preventing you from sleeping peacefully,” advises Dr. Ramchandani.

One of our favorite bedroom accessories to improve sleep quality is the adjustable bed base. Adjustable bases allow you to elevate the head and foot of the mattress. When you elevate the head of the bed, you reduce the risk of acid reflux. Additionally, this position is beneficial for those with sleep apnea, and it can alleviate snoring.

What’s more, adjustable bases often come with other perks to make your bed more comfortable. Things like full body massage, under-bed lighting, and zero-gravity settings can make your bedroom feel like a luxury getaway.
