“To steer clear of mattress sagging, focus on quality, support, and maintenance. Look for a mattress made of durable materials like sturdy foam or coils. Make sure it strikes the right balance between comfort and support and is neither too soft or too firm. Look for reinforced edges to prevent sagging, and consider a thicker mattress for added durability. Don’t forget maintenance and rotate the mattress regularly for longer-lasting support.
What We Want to See in a Mattress That Doesn’t Sag
When it comes to determining a mattress’s tendency to sag or its overall longevity, the construction can play a big role. Here’s some more specific details and why they matter when it comes to saggy mattresses:
Coil Count.
Most people equate coil count with durability, and I agree. Coils help a mattress keep its shape, especially the outer edges–which is where we can see sagging over time with some beds. Plus, they help with long-term edge support. The more coils, the more support, and the less sagging. Less is not more.
Foam Density (ILD).
ILD stands for “indentation load deflection,” and measures the amount of force needed to compress a type of foam. The higher the force, the firmer the foam, and the more durable it’s likely to be. As my fellow tester Loren put it: “Mattresses with denser foam layers tend to be more durable—that’s why all-foam mattresses use the densest foam they can in the support layer.”
Generally, a “soft” ILD is from 10 to 20, “medium” is from 20 to 30, and “firm” is 30 and above.
When it comes to avoiding saggy beds, I’d also say aside from high ILD, just make sure the foam’s quality. Like if it has CertiPUR-US certifications, it’s the good stuff.
Pressure Relief.
Pressure relief is the bed’s ability to alleviate pressure buildup in areas that dig into the mattress. We’ve said that firmer foams tend to be more unyielding and durable, but they also may struggle to properly relieve pressure. Softer foams work well for certain sleepers (like those of a lighter weight or who prefer their side), but can cause sagging over time.
Thus, it’s important to consider high-quality foams when we’re talking about pressure relief, so your bed won’t sag over time.

My Take: According to Helix’s customer service, a queen-size Midnight mattress has a total of 825 coils. This is comparable to others on this list, a decently considerable amount that should keep you supported without egregious sagging.
What We Liked
- Combination of motion isolation and bounce – This bed has both coils and memory foam, so you can expect a responsive feel that makes it easy to get in and out of bed while still getting plenty of motion isolation to prevent movement from transferring across the mattress. As Emma said, this makes this a great option for people who share their bed, whether that’s with a partner or the family dog.
- Reinforced edges – The Helix Midnight is an excellent option if you want a mattress that doesn’t sag, particularly along the perimeter, as it has reinforced edges. You may feel slight compression, but this shouldn’t make you feel like you could fall off the bed. As Emma pointed out, the perimeter holds up well enough to support you sleeping right up on the edge of the bed.
Potential Drawbacks
- Not for petite sleepers – Petite sleepers, especially those who like sleeping on their side, may prefer a mattress that feels a bit softer. Sleepers under 130 pounds may find this medium-firm mattress even firmer as they don’t weigh enough to activate the comfort layers.
- Not as noticeable of a hug – Although it contains memory foam, the Helix Midnight doesn’t hug your body the way other beds with this material do. Memory foam should help relieve pressure, and it does feel a bit contouring around the sensitive areas, but if you’re looking for deep sinkage and a hugging sensation, this bed is probably not it.

Our review team thought this bed was perfect for couples, as it excels across multiple categories important for those sharing a bed. First, it features great motion isolation, which is helpful for partners with different sleeping habits. If your partner tosses and turns all night or usually gets up before you, you should be able to sleep through that movement.
The Hybrid Comfort mattress also feels sturdy around the edges, so you can spread out as much as you want while feeling nicely supported along the perimeter. We think this durable mattress should last a long time without sagging or losing its shape.
What’s the Emma Hybrid Comfort Made Of?
The Hybrid Comfort mattress has a soft-to-the-touch, breathable top cover. Underneath is a layer of Airgocell® foam, an open-pored material that helps absorb motion while also dissipating heat. Two more layers of foam follow: a memory foam layer to promote motion isolation and an HRX foam layer for support and firmness.
The innerspring unit consists of individually wrapped coils that target specific areas of the body with seven discrete support zones.
At the bottom, a sturdy base ensures stability for all 13 inches of the mattress. There’s even a bottom cover with anti-slip fabric that prevents the mattress from sliding around on your frame.
My Take: It’s worth noting that Emma’s customer service was unfortunately unable to provide a specific coil count for a queen Hybrid Comfort, but they gave us a range of 600-800 for all models. They did say that there were about 250 coils per square meter, which is a fairly good ratio that should produce a mattress with minimal sag.
What We Liked
- Zoned support – The Emma Hybrid Comfort mattress has a spring layer with seven unique zones. These are designed to help prevent the heaviest body parts from sinking deeply, which could throw your spine out of alignment.
- Motion isolation – As we’ve noted, this bed has little motion transfer, especially for a hybrid mattress. The layers of foam balance out responsiveness while also keeping movement from traveling to the other side of the bed.
Potential Drawbacks
- Not much cradling – Although this bed has some foam layers, you’re unlikely to feel hugged or cradled by them since they’re on the firmer side. Most of our team felt like they were sleeping ‘on top of’ the mattress.
- Not the greenest – If you’re looking for an eco-conscious mattress, this may not be the best pick. Emma uses CertiPUR-US® certified foams, but none of its materials are considered fully natural or organic.

This 12.5-inch bed has organic cotton and New Zealand wool cover, followed by a 4-inch layer of Talalay latex. The latex in this bed has an open-cell structure, so it’s breathable and bouncy.

Our Take: WinkBed’s EcoCloud mattress features 848 coils in its queen model. This is pretty similar to other mattresses on this list and rather high, so you should expect it to hold weight well. The edges and middle likely won’t sag.
What We Liked
- Versatile feel – As our tester Stuart Petty pointed out, this bed should provide a versatile feel that suits side, back, and stomach sleepers, depending on their body weight. The mattress has zoned support and is bouncy enough, so combination sleepers shouldn’t feel stuck when switching positions. In addition, it provides a nice balance of pressure relief and support for side and back sleepers as well.
- Springy surface – Talalay latex is naturally springy, so you can expect the EcoCloud mattress to be quite bouncy. The surface is really responsive, as Stuart said, because the Talalay latex comes first, right on top of the coils that are also bouncy. The bounce is excellent for combination sleepers as it helps with repositioning. In addition, we think this could be a good selection for sexually active couples, adding a bit of pushback support.
Potential Drawbacks
- Not very hugging – As our review team noticed, the EcoCloud mattress lacks foams and other materials that would give it more of a hugging feel. This bed is bouncy and will make you feel like sleeping ‘on top of’ it rather than ‘in’ it. With that said, it provides enough support, but you may not sink deep enough to get that cozy, hugging feel known for memory foam.
- Motion transfer – Although the WinkBed EcoCloud did well on our motion transfer tests, given that it’s a bouncy bed, some people may prefer something with better motion isolation. As Stuart said, the cup wiggles but doesn’t fall, meaning that it does good for a bouncy bed, but you may want more if your partner is a restless sleeper or you have different sleeping habits.

Why the Plank Earned Best Firm Mattress That Won’t Sag
The Plank mattress is a dual-sided bed, but both sides are on the firm side. More precisely, we rate one as firm and the other as extra-firm, so you can get an idea of how the mattress feels. This may not work for lightweight side sleepers, but we think it could be great for heavy sleepers and even average-weight stomach sleepers who like a firmer sleep surface. Additionally, it should provide excellent support for those with back pain and is unlikely to sag due to its firm construction.
What’s the Plank Firm Mattress Made Of?
The Firm side has a 1.5-inch quilted cover, whereas the Extra-Firm side has a .75-inch quilted top. If you look at the bed with the Firm side up, you’ll find a 2-inch layer of the company’s TitanFlex™ foam. The second layer is a 7-inch dense foam that acts as the base in this case. If you flip the bed, the 7-inch layer comes first, giving that side its firmer feel.
Our Take: The Plank Firm is an all foam mattress, so it doesn’t contain coils. But when it comes to the foam, it has a 30 ILD density rating, which is considered on the firmer end. This density rating suggests that the mattress will not sag.
What We Liked
- Enhanced support – Although the Plank Firm mattress is made entirely out of foam, we feel it excels at support, even without any coils. We think the bed’s firmer feel could be an excellent option for heavy sleepers, including those who sleep on their stomach, as it provides enough support to prevent the hips from sinking. Plus, it offers excellent edge support for an all-foam mattress, so the perimeter is unlikely to sag either.
- Contouring quilted top – A mentioned, Plank Firm mattress should make you feel like you’re sleeping ‘on top of’ the bed rather than ‘in’ it. However, it has a quilted top on both sides of its flippable design to provide a bit of contouring. This may not be enough to relieve pressure for lightweight and even average-weight side sleepers but should do wonders for heavy sleepers sleeping on their back and stomach.
Potential Drawbacks
- Extra charge for the cooling cover – This mattress isn’t the most budget-friendly option, more so since the GlacioTex™ cooling cover comes at an additional charge. Hot sleepers will need to pay about 100 dollars more for the cooling cover if they want to enhance temperature regulation and ensure no overheating.
- No softer version – The Plank Firm is only available in these two firm options with its flippable design. Although this should work for many average-weight and heavyweight sleepers, it’s unlikely to be comfortable for lightweight sleepers, who would probably need something softer. Unfortunately, this mattress isn’t available in any softer firmness options, so they should look at an entirely different model.

What’s the Saatva Classic Made Of?
Shoppers can choose from two options when it comes to height: 11.5 and 14.5 inches. Both models have the same layers. The difference is in the height of each layer.
The construction starts with a 3-inch Euro top that provides decent cushioning and contouring. Underneath is the Lumbar Zone® Active Spinal Wire combined with CertiPUR-US®-certified memory foam, followed by the first layer of pocketed coils. Next is the coil base unit with a high-density rail for better edge support.
My Take: The Saatva Classic has a whopping 1,300 coils in its queen size! It’s the highest on this list, no doubt thanks to its dual innerspring unit. We often tout it as one of the most durable mattresses we’ve encountered during testing, so it makes sense to say it shouldn’t sag.
What We Liked
- Excellent support – Support is the name of the game here. The mattress has two coil units working with a Euro top and memory foam to provide plenty of support across the entire surface. On top of that, it has reinforced edge support for those who like sleeping near the perimeter.
- Ready to use – Saatva ships this mattress ready-to-use, which means it’s not shipped in a box. Although the packaging may be a bit cumbersome, the mattress isn’t compressed, so you don’t have to wait for it to expand. In addition, the company offers free in-house, or as we sometimes call it, white glove, delivery. If you choose this option, you can expect a team of professionals to show up with your new mattress, remove it from the packaging, and install it for you.
Potential Drawbacks
- Not for extra hot sleepers – Although the Saatva Classic has two coil units and is rather breathable, it’s not necessarily the most cooling mattress out there. I felt my body temperature was maintained, but I didn’t feel any extra cooling. For this reason, I wouldn’t recommend it for extremely hot sleepers who tend to overheat and sweat while sleeping.
- Not the Best Motion Isolation – This Saatva bed is springy and responsive due to its two coil units. Although the mattress has a plush Euro top and memory foam, the coils will carry movement from one side of the bed to the other. I noticed that moving from side to side causes big shakes, which means the Saatva Classic may not be the best for co-sleepers and partners with different sleeping schedules.

What We Liked
- Motion isolation – This mattress is made entirely out of foam, which makes it a great option for couples and co-sleepers. The foam layers do such a good job of absorbing motion that it’s unlikely you’d feel your partner’s tossing and turning, even if they’re a restless sleeper. A mattress that won’t sag should have a sturdy construction that is unlikely to show signs of sagging early into its use. These beds are typically made from premium materials, featuring quality craftsmanship that ensures durability.
Although most people think that only hybrid or innerspring beds can won’t sag so quickly because of their coils, this isn’t a hard-written rule. Even memory foam beds can last without sagging if the foams are high-density and durable.
How to Tell if a Mattress is Sagging
Is your mattress really sagging? There’s a possibility your bed is just suffering from normal wear and tear after years of use.
Normal Wear and Tear vs. Sagging
Most mattresses, regardless of their quality, will show some wear and tear over time. This is especially true if you sleep in the same position and same spot of your mattress every night. Over time, this will cause an indentation or divot to build up from repeated weight-bearing. It’s difficult to avoid this effect as, unfortunately, we can’t become weightless. (Not yet, at least).
Sagging is more egregious than normal wear and tear. Perhaps it occurs too fast (like in the example shown above) or feels too deep to be considered an effect of long-term use.
The cause usually stems from something else: for example, it could be due to a lack of structural integrity in the mattress itself that causes the bed to fail in supporting your weight.

Most mattresses have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years, with some wiggle room depending on the quality of their construction. If you’ve had your bed for that long (or longer), it’s possible your mattress has simply reached the end of its journey with you—it might be time to say goodbye and start anew.
However, if it’s only been a few years since you bought your bed, there are simple ways to address the wear and tear.
How to Fix a Sagging Mattress
Have you exhausted all your options but you’re not quite ready to fork over the cash for a new mattress? No worries, there are some ways you can help mitigate any existing sagging or prevent any further issues.
- Rotating your mattress – Sleeping on one side of the bed can cause sagging in that area, so a simple solution is to rotate your mattress 180 degrees every so often. This can give any sagging some time to breathe and decompress.
- Flipping your mattress – Sometimes flipping the bed over can provide you with a new, indent-free surface. Only do this if your bed has a flippable construction, though, as regular beds are designed with the comfort layers on top, and the support layers below.
- Change your foundation or frame – If your mattress sits on top of a weak foundation or frame, this could exacerbate sagging. This is especially true if your frame has wider slots that allow parts of the mattress to sink through. Some companies will also list what type of foundation is best for their mattress. - Change where/how you sleep – A last resort is to try and change how you yourself use your mattress. It might be time to switch to the other side of the bed, or try sleeping in a different position. We also want to note that jumping on the bed could cause quicker sagging, so it might be time to do away with any nightly pillow fights.
- Stay out of bed during the day – If you stay in bed all day, that’s an extra 12 hours this bed wasn’t planning on supporting you, and it may cause sagging to occur sooner rather than later. What to Look for In Durable Mattresses That Don’t Sag
The first thing you should look for is durability and quality materials if you want a mattress that won’t sag. Since sagging usually occurs due to weak materials compressing under the sleeper’s weight, it’s important that the bed returns to its original shape once you get up.
Durability Components
It’s hard to quantify how durable a mattress is when so much goes into it: what it’s made of, who’s sleeping on it, etc. But we’ve discovered a metric that works well alongside our own testing within what we’ll call “durability components” of the mattress.
We mentioned it at the beginning of our list but here’s what you can think about. Basically, we’re looking at the support system of the mattress to see how they’ll measure up. There are two main ones to consider: coil count and foam density.
Coil Count
The coil count of a mattress refers to the amount of coils in a given (innerspring or hybrid) mattress. Usually, the number of coils increases with mattress size. Consumers have found that more coils often yields more support and increased longevity, and we agree.
As a general rule, try to find mattresses that have at least 500 coils—and we’re talking about queen sizes, here. It’ll differ for smaller or larger beds, but most mattresses we test are in the 600-800s, with some of the sturdier beds having upwards of 1,000 coils.
If you can find a bed with multiple coil layers, you can double or triple the longevity-increasing effects of the coils. Simply put: more coils, less chance of sagging.
Foam Density
But what about memory foam beds without coils? Well, we look at something called the ILD (Indentation Load Deflection). Simply put, it has to do with how far something (or someone) can sink into the foam before it’s “deflected”—AKA, go any further.
The ILD is represented as a number that also can correspond to a foam’s firmness. Foams toward the lower end, around 10 to 20, are considered soft. Those in the 20-30 range are considered medium, and those above 30 would be your firm foams. The quality of the foam also has an effect on the ILD, as higher-quality foams will keep their shape and firmness longer than lower-quality foams.
Other Considerations When Shopping for a Mattress That Won’t Sag
Trial & Warranty
Don’t trust a mattress to not sag? Well, good news, there’s plenty of ways to get reimbursed if your new bed happens to sag.
For one, a trial allows you to try the mattress before fully committing to it, usually offering free returns and refunds if you send it back within the allotted time frame.
A warranty should not only give you an idea of a mattress’s lifetime, but it’s also useful to cash in when your mattress starts to sag sooner than expected. Many companies outline stipulations or timelines for when they can replace your mattress, repair it, or offer you some kind of refund. Usually, the longer you have a mattress, the less “lenient” the policies will get, as even the most highly-constructed mattress begins to show signs of age after, say, a decade of use.

Firmness
Firmer beds may initially be less likely to sag, but if the materials aren’t of good quality, they could experience wear and tear sooner, which would eventually result in sagging. One thing to keep in mind is that some mattress firmnesses are more suitable for certain sleeping positions and body weights. For instance, if a person weighs over 230 pounds, they may prefer a firmer bed because a softer bed would likely sag under their weight.

Sleeping Position
Your sleeping position may affect how a mattress reacts to pressure and compression. For example, if a mattress is too soft for side sleeping, your shoulders and hips may cause it to sag in these areas. The same goes for other positions. If you’re a stomach or back sleeper, you want to avoid a softer bed that sags too much in the middle as this can lead to lower back issues.
Weight/Body Type of Sleepers
A mattress is likely to sag if you go over its weight capacity. For example, if it’s too soft to handle a person over 230 pounds, it’s going to sag under from bearing their weight. It’s difficult to tell how soon a mattress will sag, but it could sag sooner rather than later if you consistently put too much weight onto it.
For plus-size sleepers concerned about this, there are great brands out there that cater to heavier body types with mattresses that are made with denser, reinforced materials that are less likely to sag.
Cooling
Cooling is an important factor to consider and although it doesn’t have much to do with sagging, it can make a difference when it comes to comfortable sleeping. Many mattresses have cooling features such as gel, copper, and graphite infusions, an open-cell structure (if it’s a memory foam or latex), a cool-to-the-touch cover, and different technologies that help with temperature regulation.
One thing to point out is that hybrid and innerspring mattresses are typically cooler than memory foam because memory foam has a tendency to retain heat unless it has some type of cooling enhancement like gel or an open-cell structure.
Sleeping on a bed that doesn’t sag could also help you sleep cooler since you’re less likely to be enveloped in the layers, which could cause heat buildup.

Motion Isolation
Motion isolation is another common factor many sleepers look for, especially those who share their mattress with a partner, a child, or a pet. Motion isolation refers to the mattress’ ability to isolate movement coming from one side of the bed so that you don’t feel as much of it on the other side. Memory foam beds are usually the best at isolating motion whereas latex and innerspring mattresses don’t perform as well for this because they’re more responsive and bouncy, which means movement travels more easily.
Flippability
If the mattress you’re considering is flippable, there’s a high chance that the edges will hold up better. For one, these mattresses are generally firmer than their non-flippable counterparts, as they have to bring support to not just one but two sides.
Moreover, with a flippable mattress, assuming you’re flipping it, you won’t be sleeping in the same spot on the same side for a prolonged time. This can be the culprit for why many mattresses sag.
Flippable mattresses also offer the option of having two different feels, a boon if you’re someone who cannot choose between a soft or firm surface—or if you just prefer to have the luxury of choice.
Pressure Relief
Pressure relief is important, but typically more so if you usually prefer sleeping on your side. Side sleepers often put a lot of pressure on the hips and shoulders, so it can help to have a mattress that can relieve some of that tension. Look for a bed that allows enough cradling and sinkage to prevent pressure from building up without taking away from the support. Even with sinkage and pressure relief, you want enough support to keep the spine aligned and to keep the mattress from sagging.
