Best Mattresses That Don’t Sag

Our team at Mattress Advisor is committed to helping you not only find the best mattress for your individual sleeping position and needs, but also wants to assist you in finding a durable mattress that will last for years. Therefore, we conducted an in-depth and expert review process to identify the best non-sagging mattresses on the market. It is our goal to only recommend mattresses that we ourselves want to sleep on— we do this by putting each mattress through a 6-point testing procedure and an 8-point evaluation process.

During the testing process, we assess and evaluate factors such as motion transfer, responsiveness, edge support, sleep trial period, firmness options, body heat mediation, breathability, return policies, and so much more. Then, we assign scores related to performance. This helps you effectively identify the mattress manufacturer and associated products that are best for you and your sleep style.

This bed is also heralded for its ability to sleep cool and remain breathable all night long. It’s top layer is cool to the touch and it also scores well for responsiveness, spine alignment, and motion transfer

The firm mattress option is specifically recommended for stomach sleepers and back sleepers who want to alleviate their back pain and realize improved lumbar support. The soft mattress, in turn, is ideal for side sleepers who require relief of pressure points and appreciate sleeping “in” a mattress as opposed to “on” the mattress.

The company offers a 10-year limited warranty and a sleep trial of 120 nights on this hybrid mattress. Brooklyn Bedding provides free returns and you will receive your new bed in a box within four to eight days of placing your order.

One of the many mattress models that Helix offers, the Dusk features the same quality materials, impressive construction, and reasonable price point. The dynamic top layer combines latex and foam to create a mattress surface that caters to all sleeping positions, and the memory foam and innerspring layers contribute to the above-average motion isolation and pressure relief.

All of these qualities make the Helix Dusk a great mattress, but the two characteristics that earn it the award of best firm mattress that won’t sag are its durability and, unsurprisingly, its firmness. Despite the affordability, we found the Dusk to have sturdiness that indicates a long lifespan, and the surface has a dense feel that holds up well under significant weight.

Plus, a 100-night sleep trial gives some peace of mind to those wary about buying a mattress online.

WinkBeds make some of the sturdiest beds that we’ve tested here at Mattress Advisor. Scoring a perfect 10/10 for durability, the original WinkBed holds up under substantial weight, meaning couples and plus-size sleepers can rest with peace of mind in the knowledge that the mattress has their backs.

You might be thinking that a mattress as sturdy as the WinkBed can’t possibly also be plush and cozy. Well, thanks to the Hypersoft pillow top and gel foam comfort layer the WinkBed accomplishes both.

We tested the Luxury Firm option of the WinkBed, which we highly recommend, but depending on your preferences you may be more inclined to try the Softer, Firmer, or Extra Firm version instead.

Staying cool at night can be a challenge for some, including myself. Even in the middle of winter I find that I wake up with all of my blankets kicked off. Sure, your room may be too warm or your clothes may be too heavy, but one of the primary causes of your problem may also be your mattress.

The GhostBed, one of our top cooling mattresses, directly addresses the issue of mattress overheating. Constructed with a cooling mattress cover, gel memory foam, and phase-change technology, the GhostBed doesn’t just allow heat to escape, it actively transfers heat away from your body.

In addition to its cooling abilities, the GhostBed also features high responsiveness, spine alignment, and durability. All of that means that the GhostBed can keep you sleeping cool, comfortable, and pain free for many years.

The original Bear, one of our best mattresses for athletes, has a graphite gel infused memory foam construction. The firmness hovers a little lower on the firmness scale than some of the other selections on this list, but don’t worry—while nice and soft, the Bear still does an excellent job of holding up under weight.

We love this mattress for athletes and the physically active because Bear designed the Celliant cover to absorb body heat and reflect it back as infrared light. This process can help with muscle recovery, making it that much easier to get back to performing at 100%.

Last, the high marks in the spine alignment test indicate that this bed does a good job of combatting or mitigating back pain by keeping your spine curved properly, especially when you’re on your side.

The Layla mattress is infused with copper and can be flipped in order to choose from one of two firmness levels, plush or firm. The bed truly helps sleepers who are seeking pressure relief and want to ease stiffness and joint inflammation.

This top memory foam mattress is comprised of four comfort layers and features a mattress cover as a top layer that has been softened through the mattress manufacturer’s proprietary technology.

Admittedly, it is a more expensive mattress; however, it receives near perfect scores in responsiveness, edge support, and pressure relief. What’s more is that its durable foam layers and its likelihood of experiencing sagging remains relatively low.

The Layla is also manufactured in the United States and offers a 120-night sleep trial period, a lifetime warranty, and free returns.

FIRMNESS

TRIAL PERIOD

We always advise back sleepers to look for a mattress around the medium-firm range (5-7/10) of the firmness scale. The reason being that they need something soft enough to allow their hips to sink in just a bit, but firm enough to keep them from sinking in too far. The Leesa, with a firmness of 6/10, delivers on this criterion.

While the Leesa caters especially well to back sleepers, we found that it works well for all sleeping positions, as well as people with back pain. The high scores in responsiveness and spinal alignment mean that combo sleepers won’t have trouble changing positions, and side sleepers’ posture will remain perfect as the rest.

If you still aren’t convinced, a queen size Leesa can be purchased for just under $1,000. A mattress with this level of quality and durability could easily go for two times that price, so budget shoppers should seriously consider pulling the trigger on a Leesa.

The original Purple mattress has a hybrid build, but it has some unique qualities that set it apart from the standard memory foam + innerspring hybrid constructions. The top layer of the Purple is what they call a Smart Comfort Grid—a hyper-elastic polymer material that relieves pressure and contours to your body’s shape.

Because the grid aids in pressure relief and contouring, the Purple mattress does a good job of keeping side sleepers ache-free in their back, shoulder, and hip areas. Folks who sleep hot should also find that this mattress has higher breathability than many plain old memory foam mattresses.

Below the grid the Purple has two layers of foam, which provide the durability that both helps this mattress stay in tip-top shape and makes it a great bed for heavy people.

Buyer’s Guide: Best Mattress That Doesn’t Sag

We are well aware that shopping for a mattress can feel like a big job, especially when you want to ensure you are buying a new bed that is high quality. In this guide, we will discuss

How to Prevent a Saggy Mattress

Nothing is more frustrating than lying on a mattress that is caving in on itself. And sometimes, this is due to the fact that, as sleepers with unique body types, we all have certain habits. Mattresses, ultimately, tend to deliver contouring to our bodies. This means that over time, it is possible for indentations in the cushioning to become visible, which compromises the ability of the mattress to effectively support you in your sleep position

However, it is possible to prevent your mattress from sagging. If you have recently purchased a new bed, consider following some of these tips.

Firstly, make an effort to switch up your sleep position every now and then. This means if you sleep alone, make a conscious effort to sleep on the left side of the bed one night, the middle of the bed another night, and then the right side of the bed after that. If you happen to sleep with someone else, swap the sides that you sleep on weekly so that you are both placing pressure on different parts of the bed regularly.

Another great tip is to flip or rotate your mattress as this will definitely prevent sagging from setting in. Now, keep in mind that flipping might not be an applicable strategy to all mattress types. Depending on the type of new bed that you buy, your mattress might only have been manufactured for a sleeper to sleep on one side. However, all mattresses can be rotated. If you have a mattress that is flippable, rotate your mattress every three to six months. And if you are able to flip your mattress, do this every six months as well.

Related: Best Flippable Mattresses

Next, a box spring can also increase the longevity of your mattress. Now, not all mattresses require this, but the simple fact is that a box spring will help your mattress in the long run. It is also very important to use a box spring if you make the choice to buy an innerspring, two-sided mattress as this will offer higher levels of protection.

Which Mattress Types Won’t Sag?

Innerspring Mattress

Mattresses that are made from innerspring coils alone tend to be one of the worst options if you are looking to prevent sagging. If you choose this type of new bed you are going to want to invest in a product that offers low-gauge coils because they will keep their strength longer.

Memory Foam Mattress

If you decide to purchase an all-foam memory foam bed, it is imperative that you choose a new bed that has high-density memory foam or high-density polyfoam. Plush memory foam mattresses that have lower density foam used in their manufacture will be more likely to sag. For a long-lasting mattress that won’t sag, opt for high-density foams.

Latex Mattress

Latex mattresses have become increasingly popular in recent years and with good reason. These beds are very comfortable, offer superb contouring and cushioning, and deliver bouncy support. Additionally, latex is one of the best durable mattress materials on the market and known to last long. Because latex beds are so strong, they are unlikely to experience sagging as time passes.

Hybrid Mattress

Comprised of memory foam, latex foam, and innerspring coils (or any combination), hybrid mattresses deliver multiple comfort layers and great support. However, what makes a hybrid mattress likely or unlikely to sag is really centered on the quality of the bed itself and the materials used in its manufacturing process.

High-density memory foam, latex foam, and the use of low-gauge steel springs will make sagging less likely. On the flip side of this, high-gauge innerspring coils and low-density memory foam can reduce the lifespan of your mattress and make it less durable.

How to Fix a Sagging Mattress

We realize that a new mattress can sometimes be an expense that you didn’t plan on and may not be able to afford right now. If this is the case, but you know that your mattress is sagging and losing support, don’t fret; there are ways to fix a sagging mattress and extend its life to last until you can buy a new mattress

One easy tip is to make sure your mattress is supported by a box spring, and not by a slatted bed frame. Or, if you don’t want to buy a box spring yet, just make sure that the slats in the frame are not farther than three inches apart.

Think about using some thin plywood under your mattress. While this might impact your bed’s overall breathability, making it sleep a tad bit warmer through the retention of body heat and allows a place for mold to grow and live, this is okay as a short term strategy.

Another idea is to buy a mattress topper—the thicker the better. In this regard, you don’t want the cheapest option and will want to purchase a topper that is comprised of memory foam or high-density latex.
