One of the many mattress models that Helix offers, the Dusk features the same quality materials, impressive construction, and reasonable price point. The dynamic top layer combines latex and foam to create a mattress surface that caters to all sleeping positions, and the memory foam and innerspring layers contribute to the above-average motion isolation and pressure relief.

All of these qualities make the Helix Dusk a great mattress, but the two characteristics that earn it the award of best firm mattress that won’t sag are its durability and, unsurprisingly, its firmness. Despite the affordability, we found the Dusk to have sturdiness that indicates a long lifespan, and the surface has a dense feel that holds up well under significant weight.

Plus, a 100-night sleep trial gives some peace of mind to those wary about buying a mattress online.

WinkBed makes some of the sturdiest beds that we’ve tested here at Mattress Advisor. Scoring a perfect 10/10 for durability, the original WinkBed holds up under substantial weight, meaning couples and plus-size sleepers can rest with peace of mind in the knowledge that the mattress has their backs.

You might be thinking that a mattress as sturdy as the WinkBed can’t possibly also be plush and cozy. Well, thanks to the Hypersoft pillow top and gel foam comfort layer the WinkBed accomplishes both.

We tested the Luxury Firm option of the WinkBed, which we highly recommend, but depending on your preferences you may be more inclined to try the Softer, Firmer, or Extra Firm version instead.

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora mattress is our top pick for sleepers who deal with back pain. It is one of the best hybrid mattresses available today and shoppers who want varied firmness levels can choose from firm, medium, and plush options. The bed’s five layers are made of support foam, innerspring coils, memory foam, and cooling materials.

This bed is also heralded for its ability to sleep cool and remain breathable all night long. Its top layer is cool to the touch and it also scores well for responsiveness, spine alignment, and motion transfer. The firm mattress option is specifically recommended for stomach sleepers and back sleepers who want to alleviate their back pain and realize improved lumbar support. The soft mattress, in turn, is ideal for side sleepers who require relief of pressure points and appreciate sleeping “in” a mattress as opposed to “on” the mattress.

The company offers a 10-year limited warranty and a sleep trial of 120 nights on this hybrid mattress. Brooklyn Bedding provides free returns and you will receive your new bed-in-a-box within four to eight days of placing your order.

Don’t let restlessness ruin a good night’s sleep (or a good relationship). The Cocoon Chill Hybrid by Sealy offers the kind of stability that many co-sleepers dream of, in addition to being one of the best anti-sagging mattresses available.

In the Mattress Advisor testing lab, the Cocoon Chill Hybrid scored well for motion isolation and edge support. What that means for couples is that tossing and turning will have less of a ripple effect and you’ll still feel supported if your weight shifts toward the mattress’s outer edges.

Like other top hybrid mattresses, the Cocoon Chill Hybrid uses cooling technology. Innerspring coils make up the breathable base layer, and the mattress is topped by a cooling cover. If you have back pain and other aches, the Cocoon Chill Hybrid also provides solid pressure relief and spine alignment.

Sealy asks that you try the Cocoon Chill Hybrid for at least 30 nights, but you can still request a free refund at any point during the 100-night sleep trial. The mattress carries a 10-year warranty and shipping is free to anywhere in the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii.

Staying cool at night can be a challenge for some people. Even in the middle of winter, you could wake up with all of your blankets kicked off. Sure, your room may be too warm or your clothes may be too heavy, but one of the primary causes of your problem may also be your mattress.

The GhostBed directly addresses the issue of mattress overheating with its design and materials. Constructed with a cooling mattress cover, gel memory foam, and phase-change technology, the GhostBed doesn’t just allow heat to escape, it actively transfers heat away from your body.

In addition to its cooling abilities, the GhostBed also features high responsiveness, spine alignment, and durability. All of that means that the GhostBed can keep you sleeping cool, comfortable, and pain free for many years.

Buyer’s Guide: Find the Best Mattress That Won’t Sag

Lying on a mattress that’s caving in can be frustrating and, more important, not conducive to a good night’s sleep. However, it is possible to prevent your mattress from sagging. If you’ve recently purchased a new bed, consider the following tips.

  • Try to switch up which part of the mattress you sleep on every now and then. If you sleep alone, make a conscious effort to sleep on the left side of the bed one night, the middle of the bed another night, and then the right side of the bed after that. If you sleep with a spouse or significant other, swap the sides that you sleep on weekly so that you’re both placing pressure on different parts of the bed regularly.
  • Flip or rotate your mattress. Flipping means to turn it over to the opposite side, while rotating means to turn the mattress so that you swap the head-end for the foot-end. Keep in mind that flipping isn’t a good strategy for layered or hybrid mattresses that have a specific base or foundation layer. (It would be like living in a house built attic-side down.) If you have a mattress that is flippable, flip it every six months. You can rotate your mattress every three to six months.
  • A box spring can also increase the longevity of your mattress. Not all mattresses require it, but the added support of a box spring should help with durability. It’s also very important to use a box spring if you buy an innerspring, two-sided mattress.

What Makes a Mattress Sag?

The force of a person’s weight pressing down on the surface for several hours a night will gradually create an impression in the material. Even memory foam, designed to contour to your body and gradually spring back to the original shape, doesn’t keep its original elasticity forever. Sudden impacts also contribute to sagging (which explains why Mom told you not to jump on the bed).

Mattress material can also contribute to the sagging process. Low-quality, low-density foam and latex have less longevity. With innerspring mattresses, coils that use tempered steel and other durable materials won’t lose their tension as quickly.

Which Mattress Types Resist Sagging?

Innerspring Mattress

Mattresses that are made from innerspring coils alone tend to be one of the worst options if you are looking to prevent sagging. If you choose this type of new bed you are going to want to invest in a product that offers low-gauge coils because they will keep their strength longer.

Memory Foam Mattress

If you decide to purchase an all-foam memory foam bed, it is imperative that you choose a new bed that has high-density memory foam or high-density polyfoam. Plush memory foam mattresses that have lower density foam used in their manufacture will be more likely to sag. For a long-lasting mattress that won’t sag, opt for high-density foams.

Latex Mattress

Latex mattresses have become increasingly popular in recent years and with good reason. These beds are very comfortable, offer superb contouring and cushioning, and deliver bouncy support. Additionally, latex is one of the best durable mattress materials on the market and known to last long. Because latex beds are so strong, they are unlikely to experience sagging as time passes.

Hybrid Mattress

Comprised of memory foam, latex foam, and innerspring coils (or any combination), hybrid mattresses deliver multiple comfort layers and great support. However, what makes a hybrid mattress likely or unlikely to sag is really centered on the quality of the bed itself and the materials used in its manufacturing process.

High-density memory foam, latex foam, and the use of low-gauge steel springs will make sagging less likely. On the flip side of this, high-gauge innerspring coils and low-density memory foam can reduce the lifespan of your mattress and make it less durable.

How to Fix a Sagging Mattress

We realize that a new mattress can sometimes be an expense that you didn’t plan on and may not be able to afford right now. If this is the case, but you know that your mattress is sagging and losing support, don’t fret; there are ways to fix a sagging mattress and extend its life to last until you can buy a new mattress.

One easy tip is to make sure your mattress is supported by a box spring, and not by a slatted bed frame. Or, if you don’t want to buy a box spring yet, just make sure that the slats in the frame are not farther than three inches apart.

Think about using some thin plywood under your mattress. While this might impact your bed’s overall breathability, making it sleep a tad bit warmer through the retention of body heat and allows a place for mold to grow and live, this is okay as a short term strategy.

Another idea is to buy a mattress topper—the thicker the better. In this regard, you don’t want the cheapest option and will want to purchase a topper that is comprised of memory foam or high-density latex.

A Closer Look at Our Selection Process

In choosing our best mattresses that don’t sag, we emphasize two testing categories that determine how likely a mattress is to resist sagging: durability and edge support. Here’s a look at how our picks performed in the Mattress Advisor Sleep Lab:

Mattress AVERAGE SCORE (OUT OF 10) FOR DURABILITY AND EDGE SUPPORT
Saatva 10
Helix Dusk 8.8
WinkBed 9.9
DreamCloud Premier 8.8
Nectar 8.75
Brooklyn Bedding Aurora 8.0
Casper Hybrid 9.1
Puffy Lux Hybrid 7.25
Cocoon Chill Hybrid 8.6
GhostBed Classic 8.8

Note: The testing categories we focus on in this chart don’t reflect overall performance. Depending on your needs and preferences, you might put more (or less) value on particular qualities.

Summary

No mattress shopper wants to buy a new bed only to experience sagging. While all mattresses will live through some wear and tear over time and nothing can be designed to last forever, we believe that the mattress options covered in this article offer some of the best choices for long term durability, support, and overall comfort.

Depending on your sleep style and sleep position, you are sure to find that one of these mattresses is right for you, allowing you to realize a return on your investment while also getting a great night’s sleep and waking up refreshed and ready for the day.
