Why the Saatva Classic Earned Editor’s Pick

The Saatva Classic gives traditional innerspring beds a thoroughly luxurious upgrade. With its soothing comfort layers, dual coil units, and white-glove delivery experience, it distinguishes itself among competitors who don’t go the extra mile.

This mattress also received the Editor’s Pick title due to unanimously positive feedback from our review team. For me, the Saatva achieved a “Goldilocks-esque blend” of comfort and support, and my fellow tester Stuart agreed. I have to note just how premium the bed feels and looks. “This is a mattress that feels high-end, and it’ll last you for a long time,” Stuart concluded.

What’s the Saatva Classic Made Of?

The Classic’s 3-inch Euro top makes for a pampering, pillowy introduction to the bed. It should provide a soft, pressure-relieving surface that also looks after your lower back: its Lumbar Zone® quilting adds increased support to the pillow top’s central region. The feel of this first layer will vary slightly depending on whether you select the Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, or Firm version of the mattress.

Under the pillow top is a specialized layer of memory foam that occupies the same middle-third area of the bed, targeting the lumbar region.

The bed’s two coil units make for an especially deluxe experience, as not many mattresses on the market can boast more than one set of springs. The top unit features individually wrapped coils to cradle the body while minimizing motion transfer, and the coils in the bottom unit are interconnected to reduce sagging.

The inside of the Saatva Classic Mattress

The lumbar support in the upper layers of the mattress is also undergirded by a Lumbar Zone® Active Spinal Wire embedded in the lower coils.

This bed is available in two heights: 11.5 or 14.5 inches. If you’re going to perch it atop an adjustable bed frame, then you should choose the 11.5-inch version.

Our Take: “You can sleep in just about any position on this mattress and still feel comfortable.” Stuart Petty, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • One of the best beds for backs – The Lumbar Zone® Technology in this bed makes it a top pick for sleepers in search of better spinal alignment or back pain relief. “I [have] to shout out the tons of lumbar support. If you need a mattress that’s got your back, you need the Saatva Classic,” said Stuart.
  • Cozy and durable – Saatva builds their beds to last, which is one reason why many customers find them to be worth the investment. This durability is palpable when you try the mattress. The exceptional edge support both lying and sitting at the edge, I was completely secure, while Stuart characterized the Classic as “sturdy and well built.”
  • Exceptional service – Saatva bucks tradition by delivering their mattresses uncompressed—that is, they don’t box them up at all. Instead, a team will carry your mattress straight into your bedroom, set it up, and even take away your old bed for free.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Imperfect motion isolation – The Saatva Classic’s spring units help to keep you on top of the bed, rather than stuck “inside” it. But that feature can also limit the bed’s ability to absorb jostling from a sleeping partner’s movements. “If you need a lot of motion absorption or more of a cradling feel, this might not be the bed for you,” said Stuart.
  • The price of luxury – Thanks to its stellar features, you can expect to pay slightly more for a Saatva Classic than you might for a more affordable mattress. Saatva also charges a return fee if you choose to send a mattress back.

Customer Reviews of the Saatva Classic

The Saatva Classic rates 4.8 stars out of 5 on Saatva’s website. One negative aspect customers found with the Saatva Classic mattress is that it may feel too firm for some users, while a notable advantage is its high-quality materials, providing durability and support.

Why the Emma Hybrid Comfort Earned Best Firm Mattress

If you’re in the market for a bed with a firmer feel, consider the Emma Hybrid Comfort. This model strikes a nice balance between firmness and versatility, as it can accommodate heavyweight sleepers as well as couples who share a bed.

Its firmer feel should be buoying but not uncomfortable; as a stomach sleeper, I thought it struck the right balance of pressure relief and support. I gave it a 7/10 on our firmness scale, which means it’s definitely out of the medium-firm zone and into true firm territory.

What’s the Emma Hybrid Comfort Made Of?

The Emma Hybrid Comfort has 6 layers (including its top cover) and stands 13 inches tall.

Its cover should wick away sweat and moisture, and the following Airgocell® foam layer was engineered to avoid overheating.

It has an open-cell design that both permits airflow and regulates surrounding temperatures. At the same time, it conforms to the body’s most forceful pressure points to provide targeted relief.

Looking at the Emma Hybrid Construction in the lab

Beneath the Airgocell® layer is a sheet of cooling memory foam, followed by a firm, robust layer of HRX (High Resiliency Extra) foam.

Next, the Hybrid Comfort’s spring system adds to its cooling arsenal. Air is free to circulate around and through the individually pocketed coils, which can support most body types with ease. The springs are zoned into seven different regions to provide appropriate amounts of compression and pushback to different parts of the body.

Finally, there’s a layer of dense foam beneath the coils that both cushions the spring unit and provides an extra dose of stability.

My Take: I dig the Emma Hybrid Comfort for its sturdy, reliable construction. It was dreamed up with heavy people and couples as its target audience, but it’s a great bed for anyone who likes a firmer surface and wants an affordable yet long-lived mattress.

What I Liked

It’s a long-term investment – Because the Hybrid Comfort was built for couples and people of all sizes, its materials are extremely durable. This mattress should last you approximately a decade with proper care.

It has specialized support – The innerspring unit inside this bed has seven distinct zones that correspond to different areas of the body. This kind of customized pushback can be a big boon for people with sensitive joints or back pain.

Potential Drawbacks

It’s firmer than average – This bed feels quite firm, so side sleepers and anyone who’s seeking an especially soft mattress should look elsewhere.

It won’t mold to your body much – You’ll likely feel buoyed by this mattress more than you’ll feel “hugged” by it. If you prefer more sinkage, then an all-foam mattress may be a better fit.

Customer Reviews of the Emma Hybrid Comfort

This is a fairly new mattress, so Emma’s site doesn’t have many reviews yet, but early customers already rate it an impressive 5 out of 5 stars. So far customers appreciate the Emma Hybrid Comfort mattress for its excellent motion isolation, but some have reported that it may have a slight initial off-gassing odor upon unboxing.

Why the Helix Midnight Earned Best Mattress for Side Sleepers

Helix is all about finding the right fit. They’ve created distinct lines of mattresses geared towards the most common sleeping positions, and their Midnight model is designed for side sleepers in particular.

“I like how my hips and shoulders have a little cushion around them,” said Emma, one of our mattress testers. As a combination sleeper, she seeks out beds that will allow her to stay comfortable on her side as well as reposition herself easily. The Helix Midnight delivered on these fronts, as it provides a good mix of cushioning and responsiveness: “I like how the foams feel soft, but not too soft, like I’m sinking in and getting stuck.”

What’s the Helix Midnight Made Of?

The Midnight is a hybrid mattress with three foam layers atop a sturdy coil unit. Its first foam layer is a proprietary blend called Memory Plus foam, and it’s meant to deliver soothing pressure relief to the shoulders and hips. The two foam layers beneath it complement its cushioning powers with increasing responsiveness and support.

At the bed’s base, up to 1,000 springs help to buoy the body where it requires gentle pushback. The coils are individually wrapped to prevent too much transfer of motion—they only compress when pressure is directly applied, rather than passing movement to their neighbors.

Like all hybrids, the Midnight derives additional cooling capabilities from the airflow around its springs. Its cover is also soft and breathable.

A closer look at the Helix Midnight mattress construction

However, if you know that you sleep hot, you can pay an additional fee to outfit your Midnight with a GlacioTex™ Cooling Cover.

Our Take: “The mix of comfort and support is just right.” Emma Mattei, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Responsive but also motion-absorbing – It’s hard to find a bed that’s both slightly bouncy and capable of motion isolation, but the Helix Midnight is up to the task. “It definitely has good response and bounce. I can move and adjust positions, no problem,” said Emma. Later in the testing process, she was delighted to find that the bed also absorbed movement quite well, which is a rarity in a springy hybrid. “We were actually really surprised by how well it isolated motion,” she said.
  • Strong edges – The Midnight’s coil unit has reinforced springs lining the long edges of the bed. This edge support should enable you to lie close to the side of the mattress without fear of rolling off. Emma confirmed that these edges held up when put to the test: “We don’t feel like we’re gonna fall off the bed, even right up on the edge of the mattress.”
  • A more-than-fair price – According to Emma, the Midnight is “a killer value for the money.” Helix handmakes their mattresses in Arizona from quality materials, including long-lasting steel and CertiPUR-US® certified foams, so their affordable pricing is all the more impressive.

Potential Drawbacks

  • It doesn’t hug you – As a hybrid model, the Helix Midnight might not satisfy customers who want the deep sinking feeling you can get from an all-foam bed. “If you want that old-school memory foam feel, this bed may not be for you,” said Emma.
  • Designed for average-sized sleepers – If you’re a petite person who sleeps exclusively on your side, you may find the Midnight too firm for your liking. On the other hand, heavier folks—and especially stomach sleepers—might feel like this bed is too soft. Never fear, however; Helix offers other models for folks in these demographics.

Customer Reviews of the Helix Midnight

The Helix Midnight rates 4.5 stars out of 5 on Helix’s website. The main negative is that reviewers tend to find it too soft for their liking and feel as though they’re sinking. But overall, users say they’re getting a great nights’ sleep and some pain relief.

Why the WinkBed Earned Best Mattress for Back Pain

If you’re experiencing back pain, buying a new mattress can be one positive step toward relief. The WinkBed is a particularly good bet for achy backs due to its customizable and considered design.

Generally, the WinkBed’s layers should encourage a healthy, neutral spinal alignment while you sleep. Its Euro top offers gratifying pressure relief with gel-infused foam, and incorporates a LumbarLayer™ of particularly supportive foam for your lumbar spine. Underneath, the mattress’s coils have been zoned into regions that provide specialized pushback for the different areas of the back.

Another benefit for sore spines? As my fellow tester Mark put it, “You can choose what style is gonna best fit your body.” The WinkBed comes in multiple firmnesses, so you’re able to pick the feel that precisely matches your back’s needs.

What’s the WinkBed Made Of?

Each WinkBed is approximately 13.5 inches high. It begins with a cooling Tencel® cover that’s made with water-saving practices and fibers derived from Eucalyptus wood.

The mattress’s Euro pillow top “offers pressure relief and a gentle cradle,” according to our tester Sean. It’s quilted with gel-infused foam that should keep heat from accumulating around you. The pillow top leads into a couple more foam comfort layers, including the brand’s proprietary LumbarLayer™ that targets the lower-back region.

WinkBeds Mattress Construction

The WinkBed’s coil unit comes next. Its springs are individually wrapped rather than interconnected, so they can respond to your body’s specific pressure patterns. They’re also reinforced along the edges of the mattress to prevent the sides from sinking.

When you order a WinkBed, the company handmakes your mattress in one of its three American facilities. They prioritize the craftsmanship and durability of their beds, and subject them to rigorous compression testing to ensure that they’ll last for years.

You’ll also choose the overall feel of your WinkBed when you select from four distinct firmnesses: Soft, Luxury Firm, Firm, and Plus (the last of which is meant for heavyweight sleepers).

Our Take: “I’ve had the opportunity to try out the WinkBed mattress a number of times … There is quality in every single layer of this bed.” Mark Mattei, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • It stays cool – The Tencel© cover, gel-infused foam, and coil unit in this mattress comprise what the brand calls Triple Layer Heat Disperse™ technology. All three elements work together to prevent heat retention, and the effect is immediately noticeable. According to our tester Sean, “From the start, the bed feels cool to the touch.”
  • Awesome edge support – Couples and restless sleepers should value this mattress’s Extra-Edge™ Support System, which enables you to occupy the farthest edges of the bed without a dip in support. “I can roll right up to the edge of the bed without losing that supportive feel,” said Sean.
  • Appealing details and durability – Our tester Mark was drawn to the handcrafted touches that make each WinkBed special. “I really like that these are handmade [and] that they’re tufted,” he said. Although I haven’t tested a WinkBed over a span of years and years, we’re pretty confident that the brand’s attention to detail pays off in terms of longevity.

Potential Drawbacks

  • There’s some motion transfer – “This mattress might not provide the same level of motion absorption as an all-foam bed,” said Sean. “But the coils respond individually, which does help to prevent too much movement.”
  • No memory-foam feel – You won’t find any memory foam in this mattress, so if you love the singular feel of that material, this may not be the bed for you. “People who like to feel like they are sleeping in the bed may feel more like they are floating on top of this mattress,” said Sean.

Customer Reviews of the WinkBed

On the WinkBeds site, the WinkBed earns a 4.8 out of 5 stars. One drawback of the WinkBed mattress is that it might be too expensive for budget-conscious shoppers, but overall it offers excellent durability and customizable firmness options.

Why the Helix Dawn Earned Best Mattress for Back Sleepers

Back sleepers require a level of support from their mattress that promotes healthy spine alignment and doesn’t allow uncomfortable sinkage. The Helix Dawn rises to this challenge with its firmer feel and brand-exclusive foams, including the latex-like Helix Dynamic Foam. These foams should satisfy back sleepers who prefer to sleep atop a mattress, rather than “inside” it.

What’s the Helix Dawn Made Of?

The Helix Dawn is 11.5 inches heigh and has five layers.

At the very top of the bed, there’s a Soft Touch cover that’s both breathable and slightly stretchy. If you’re invested in staying maximally cool throughout the night, though, you can upgrade the cover to a GlacioTex™ variant that should redirect excess body heat.

There are three upper foam layers in the bed, beginning with the softest of the bunch, Helix Dynamic Foam. This material mimics the springy properties of latex foam, striking a comfortable balance between responsiveness and cushioning.

Underneath it are two layers of Helix’s Responsive Foam, the lower of which is denser to preserve the firmness that back and stomach sleepers need. The Dawn’s coil unit further bolsters these sleeping positions. Its long edges boast reinforced springs, so you can spread your limbs to either side without worry.

Finally, a sturdy layer of DuraDense foam acts as the bed’s base.

My Take: The Helix Dawn is perhaps the firmest mattress in Helix’s Core collection, with a topmost foam layer that prioritizes responsiveness over softness and sink. It should be a breath of fresh air for stomach and back sleepers who desire consistent loft and support from their bed.

What I Liked

  • It’s firm, but versatile – This mattress bills itself as a great option for back and stomach sleepers, but it can appeal to many other people as well, including plus-size sleepers and anyone who enjoys a firmer, bouncier feel.
  • Made in America without harmful chemicals – Helix workers assemble the brand’s mattresses by hand in American factories. The foams inside are CertiPUR-US® certified, which guarantees that they don’t contain harmful substances such as ozone depleters or heavy metals.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Too firm for side sleepers – Side sleepers are liable to find this mattress to be a bit too hard for them, and will want more pressure relief around their hips and shoulders.
  • Not a lot of contouring – This bed will lift you up more than it will “hug” you, so if you prefer a cradled, sinking feel, it might not be the right pick.

The Helix Dawn has an average of 4.4 out of 5 stars on the Helix website. Negative reviews say that the mattress seems to get softer over time, but the majority positive reviews claim the bed is comfortable and has helped with aches and pains.

Why the Nolah Evolution Earned Best Hybrid Mattress

The Nolah Evolution takes hybrid design to the next level—literally. This mattress is 15 inches high, making it one of the tallest beds on this list. It reaches that height thanks to its seven layers, which combine multiple proprietary materials unique to the Nolah brand.

The mixture of supportive springs and so many comfort layers results in a mattress where more truly is better. “The Nolah Evolution has been one of my favorite mattresses to try. Not only is it supportive, but it’s really comfortable,” said Liz, one of our mattress testers.

What’s the Nolah Evolution Made Of?

The Nolah Evolution has nine layers, including its top and bottom covers. It’s also available in three different firmness levels: Plush, Luxury Firm, or Firm.

The first few layers of the mattress are preoccupied with comfort and cooling.

An organic cotton cover leads into a plush Euro topper made with HTC™ (high thermal conductivity) quilting, which should absorb and redirect unwanted warmth. The topper is surrounded by an AirBreath™ Heat Escape Gusset that encourages the heat to vent out of the mattress rather than building up.

Taking a look at the Nolah Evolution mattress construction

Next is a layer of AirFoamICE™. According to Nolah, this exclusive material performs measurably better than memory foam in three key areas: cooling, pressure relief, and durability. It’s infused with graphite to guard against heat retention, and it should conform to the curves of your body to cradle sensitive joints.

After two more layers of specialized foams, you’ll find the mattress’s HDMax™️ Tri-Zone™️ coils. They’re divided into three regions for specialized back support, and reinforced along the edges.

The Nolah Evolution concludes with a base layer made from recycled plant fiber.

Our Take: “I could even feel the zoned support in the springs working to support my body weight appropriately.” – Stuart, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • It’s larger than life – Nolah has attempted to improve on traditional hybrid mattresses at almost every turn with its own take on foams, coils, and cover designs. The sheer amount of proprietary layers in this mattress make it a luxurious, state-of-the-art option. Stuart echoed this sentiment, characterizing the Evolution as “packed” with layers that provide “plush relief.”
  • Good motion isolation for a hybrid – According to Stuart, “[The Evolution] has great motion isolation … you shouldn’t have to crawl around like you’re stuck in slow-motion so you don’t wake up your partner.” This quality can be hard to find in hybrids, but the Evolution’s many comfort layers tend to cancel out the motion-transferring properties of the springs.
  • Custom firmness and targeted support – The Nolah Evolution offers consumers plenty of customization with three firmness options: Plush, Luxury Firm, and Firm. With each of those firmness levels, you’ll still receive specialized support from the mattress’s zoned coils, which provide the right amount of pushback or compression beneath different areas of the body. “I really love the relief I get from the pressure in my hips,” commented Liz.

Potential Drawbacks

  • It’s cumbersome to move – Because this bed is so tall and heavy once expanded, it can be more inconvenient to transport. “Make sure you have someone available to help you set this thing up, as it’s thicker than most of the mattresses we work with,” said Stuart.
  • Stomach sleepers may sink too much – “Stomach sleepers may find that their hips and lower back sink pretty deep into this mattress, and it may not be the most comfortable for long-term sleep,” Stuart remarked.

Customer Reviews of the Nolah Evolution

Earning a 4.9 out of 5 stars on Nolah’s website, the Nolah Evolution seems to be a hit. Customers appreciate the Nolah Evolution mattress for its superior pressure relief, but some have mentioned that the edge support could be improved for a more consistent sleep surface.

Why the Bear Star Hybrid Earned Best Cooling Mattress

The Bear Stay Hybrid makes cooling a top priority, literally—the top of the bed is designed to say super-chill. Stuart attested that the cover immediately “has a cool-to-the-touch feel” and called it “a refreshing sleep surface.”

The cover’s fabric combines HydroCool® heat-resisting fibers and Celliant®, a performance textile meant to encourage tissue oxygenation. Meanwhile, the Serene Gel Foam underneath also prevents warmth from accumulating in the bed, and the innerspring system at the base promotes cooling air circulation.

What’s the Bear Star Hybrid Made Of?

The construction starts with a cover made with Celliant®. This performance textile reputedly helps to better oxygenate the blood, thereby boosting tissue recovery (especially after physical activity). One of Bear’s claims to fame is that they’re among a select few mattress companies that incorporate Celliant® into their beds.

Under the cover, you’ll find a layer of Serene Gel Foam and Responsive Comfort Foam. Both of these foam layers contribute a considered mix of pressure relief and strong support. The first includes a gel infusion that assists with cooling, and the second has enough springiness to adapt well to different sleeping postures.

Take a closer look at the Bear Star Hybrid mattress construction

Next is the mattress’s coil unit. The pocketed springs—with stronger coils along the edges—compress individually as your body exerts downward pressure.

This bed is also fiberglass-free and eco-conscious: it’s GREENGUARD Gold certified, meaning it’s passed stringent tests that look for potentially harmful materials in its composition and emissions.

Our Take: “The responsive comfort foam offers exceptional pressure relief and support, adapting to all sleeping positions.” – Stuart, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Especially cool cover – The Bear’s cover features both Celliant® fibers and HydroCool® technology, giving it a leg up over traditional fabric covers.
  • A lovely bed for couples – Stuart said that the Bear Star Hybrid should perform quite well for couples. Its firm-yet-cozy feel should bridge the gap between people with somewhat different comfort preferences, and its cooling elements can keep sleeping partners from overheating.
  • Long warranty – This mattress comes with a generous lifetime warranty.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Too hard for small folks – Stuart remarked that this mattress “might be too firm for some.” Lightweight people in particular may feel that this bed is too hard for their tastes.
  • No pillowy memory foam – This mattress is more responsive than it is apt to “hug” your body. Although it has Serene Gel Foam in its first comfort layer, it doesn’t have classic memory foam as part of its construction. For that, you’ll need to investigate its upgraded version, the Bear Elite Hybrid.

Customer Reviews of the Bear Star Hybrid

Coming in at approximately 4.5 out of 5 stars on Bear’s site, the Bear Star Hybrid has generally positive reviews. Customers praise the Bear Star Hybrid mattress for its excellent cooling properties, however some have found it to be on the firmer side, which might not be suitable for those seeking a softer feel.

Why the Titan Plus Earned Best Mattress for Heavyweight Sleepers

Without sufficient support, heavier sleepers run the risk of sinking too deeply through the layers of a mattress. This “bottoming out” sensation can be very uncomfortable, and it also puts uneven strain on the body, often resulting in poor spinal alignment. Thankfully, Brooklyn Bedding created their Titan Plus mattress to fulfill the needs of plus-sized sleepers.

This bed is a durable hybrid made with materials that provide robust, reliable support. Our reviewers (both plus-sized and straight-sized) were united in their assessment of this bed: it’s “extra durable and supportive,” with coils that they described as “extra strong” and “super strong.”

What’s the Titan Plus Mattress Made Of?

The Titan Plus is 11 inches tall with five total layers.

Its first layer consists of a quilted top that harbors an inch of gel memory foam. The gel keeps the foam from retaining excess heat as it molds to the sleeper’s silhouette, and the foam’s modest thickness prevents an unpleasant “stuck” feeling.

Beneath the memory foam is a 2-inch layer of proprietary TitanFlex™ foam, which also relieves pressure while maintaining a springy, responsive feel. It lies against the 6-inch TitanCore coils that form the mattress’s foundation. These sturdy coils are key to the mattress’s ability to support up to 1,000 pounds of weight.

Brooklyn Bedding Titan Plus Construction from the lab

Finally, a 2-inch base layer of high-density foam gives the springs a strong, padded surface to rest upon.

Our Take: “Unlike many mattresses that I have tried, my weight is evenly distributed over this surface and I feel extremely comfortable.” – Mark, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • It suits multiple sleeping positions – This mattress obviously suits plus-sized sleepers well, but its feel can also please average-sized back and stomach sleepers who prefer a firm bed. And if you’re concerned about side-sleeping as a heavy person, maybe Mark can assuage your fears: “There is little to no pressure build-up, and I would actually say that this mattress relieves pressure while [I’m lying on my side].”
  • It’s a good setup for couples – “For as much bounce as this bed has, it contains motion pretty well. Restless sleepers probably won’t wake up their sleeping partners,” Mark said. He also complimented the Titan Plus’s edge support, which should enable couples to spread out across the mattress’s entire surface area.
  • It doesn’t forget about cooling – “If you sleep hot, you should sleep great on this mattress,” said Emma, another of our testers. With cooling gel in its first layer of foam and a coil unit that encourages airflow, “This bed is designed to keep heat moving.”

Potential Drawbacks

  • It’s firm rather than soft – Even as heavy people enjoy a certain amount of coziness with this bed, lightweight sleepers may think it feels uncomfortably hard.
  • You’ll sink a little, but not a lot – If you prize an especially pillowy mattress, the Titan Plus probably isn’t for you. But if you want to feel lifted by your bed, then this quality may be advantageous. “I definitely sink in a little bit,” said Mark, “but this mattress feels supportive enough that I don’t feel stuck at all.”

Customer Reviews of the Titan Plus

Users on Titan by Brooklyn Bedding’s site have given the Titan Plus a 4.7 out of 5 stars. Customers find the Titan Plus mattress to offer exceptional durability and support, but some mention that it might be too firm for those who prefer a softer feel.

Why You Should Trust Us

At Sleep Advisor, our mattress reviews are based on findings from in-person tests that allow us to have a genuine understanding of how the mattress feels and performs. I look at features that are valuable to consumers, such as cooling, bounce, edge support, and motion isolation.

Julia Forbes, the lead Sleep Advisor product tester, in our mattress testing facility
Testing mattresses in the Sleep Advisor mattress facility.

I also evaluate mattress performance for back, side, and stomach sleeping. Lying in different positions lets us know how supportive the bed is and if it’s good at relieving pressure.

I then take all the information we’ve gathered to rate the bed in specific categories. These results allow us to help our readers find the right mattress for their needs.

What To Consider When Picking Out the Best Mattress for You

Budget

Finding a bed that suits your mattress budget and individual needs is critical for a purchase you’ll appreciate for years to come. There’s a common misconception, though, that spending more money on a product will yield the most satisfaction. This is not always the case.

Inexpensive choices don’t necessarily equate to low quality, and with the mattress industry offering more direct-to-consumer strategies through online purchases, higher quality can be had at a lower cost. In our list above, you can see a few of the mattresses I love that offer outstanding value.

What to Look for in a Mattress

The type of mattress you get can impact features like longevity, price, cooling, edge support, motion isolation, pressure relief, and more.

Type of Mattress

From our mattress studio, images of our tested mattresses in different materials

Innerspring Mattresses

An innerspring mattress is the most traditional type. While the market can often be dominated by fancy new memory foam or hybrid products, innerspring mattresses still bring a lot to the table, depending on what you need.

Coil beds are great for cooling because the springs provide regular airflow, making them less warm than products that use memory foam (which tends to run hot). Innerspring mattresses also offer excellent edge support and durability. Traditional coil mattresses are also one of the least expensive types available.

Read More: Pros and Cons of an Innerspring Mattress

Hybrid Mattresses

If you enjoy the support and cooling of an innerspring mattress but love the soft comfort of foam as well, a hybrid is a great mix of the two styles. Most hybrids contain memory foam at the top, followed by a transitional layer of firmer poly foam and a coil unit at the base.

That being said, there are variations to this design. Some brands use latex instead of memory foam, while others may use more foam below the coils for reinforcement. A big advantage of hybrids is their versatility — there are virtually limitless design options.

Memory Foam Mattresses

Memory foam is a popular mattress type for the average sleeper. This kind of foam contours to your body for a signature hug-like sensation and delivers excellent relief to common pressure points.

Memory foam’s tendency to run hot has led manufacturers to adjust the structure of their foams in recent years. Adding cooling gels or opting for an open-cell construction can result in less overall heat retention. Some brands may use graphite or copper in their memory foam to provide enhanced cooling.

If you sleep with a partner, live in a warmer climate, or are generally prone to overheating, seeking out a memory foam bed with cooling features would be best.

Interested in exploring further? Consult our guide on the 6 types of foam.

Latex Mattresses

Latex mattresses are also a common mattress type available to shoppers. These beds might be made up of latex layers exclusively, or they might have a coil unit below their latex layers, making them latex hybrids.

Latex has plenty of advantages to offer consumers, including a pleasantly springy feel, temperature regulation, pressure relief, and support. Though these beds tend to be more expensive, they’re highly durable and should last you a long time.

Beds constructed with natural latex are also one of the most environmentally friendly choices out there, making this a great mattress type for eco-conscious shoppers.

When looking at latex mattresses, you’ll likely come across two terms: Talalay and Dunlop. These monikers represent the two distinct manufacturing processes used to create latex layers, and each offers a slightly different feel.

Other Considerations When Shopping for a Mattress

Sleeping Position

Our testers test each sleeping position to make sure each mattress fits the right sleeper

Back sleepers are usually an ideal match for medium-firm mattresses that give more robust support but still have noticeable pressure relief.

Read More: Best Mattress for Back Sleepers

If you sleep on your side, a soft to medium-firm mattress should suit you well. You’ll want a bed with enough plushness to cushion your hips and shoulders, but you’ll also need a solid foundation of support that keeps you from sinking too far into the mattress.

If you sleep on your stomach, a soft mattress can hyper-extend your spine, upsetting your body’s alignment. A firm mattress is therefore best for stomach sleepers to your hips don’t dip too low.

Combination sleepers shift between different positions throughout the night. It follows that their mattresses should be as adaptable as they are, with a middle-of-the-road firmness and enough responsiveness to facilitate movement. Memory foam mattresses may have too much of a “sinking” feeling for combination sleepers. A latex or hybrid mattress is often a better fit.

Explore our picks for the best beds for side sleepers, mattresses for stomach sleepers, and beds for combination sleepers.

Weight/Body Type of Sleepers

Your weight and body type can greatly affect the kind of mattress that works best for you. Lightweight people are likely to feel more comfortable on plush beds that provide ample pressure relief. This allows these sleepers to sink deeper into their mattress. Sinking deeper into a softer mattress can help prevent pressure from building up when lightweight sleepers bare their weight on the smaller joints of their bodies.

If you’re a heavier person, you will likely want a firmer mattress that provides a good deal of support and is made out of durable materials. Heavier people can push through soft mattresses, and this lack of support can cause pressure to build up and cause their spine to not be properly aligned. Average-weight people fall in the middle of the scale, and they tend to sleep best on medium-firm mattresses as these will provide both support and comfort for their body types.

Firmness

Mattresses come in a wide variety of firmness levels, and this aspect often dictates what individuals deem to be comfortable. While some cultures believe sleeping on the floor to be healthiest for spinal alignment, it doesn’t always offer a cozy feel conducive to sleep.

Most beds are in the medium-firm range because these provide support for back pain, yet simultaneously relieve pressure from aching joints. Heavier individuals might firmer mattress to get the same feel since the mattress would endure more pressure, and lighter sleepers can frequently find similar comfort with a more plush option.

We’ve rated the various mattress types on their general firmness levels in terms of numbers and descriptors (1 being the softest, 10 being the most firm) to help you choose which is right for you.

Cooling

When shopping for a mattress, keep in mind the types of products known for cooling benefits (and those that aren’t).

Typically, memory foam runs on the warmer side because the foam is made of tiny pores and lacks airflow channels. However, newer memory foam models with gel infusions or alternative cooling technologies will help reduce heat retention.

Traditional innerspring and hybrid mattresses are usually excellent for temperature regulation. This is because the coils in them allow air to circulate inside the mattress, preventing warm spots.

Natural latex products work wonderfully for cooling as well. Latex is made from rubber trees, and the sap from the tree is made into foam. With an open cell structure, the latex foam is able to facilitate significant airflow.

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation is usually important for those sharing a bed with a partner. If you or your partner move around throughout the night, this could be disturbing for a light sleeper.

However, mattresses for couples that have strong motion isolation, such as beds with memory foam, could solve this issue and allow two people to sleep in peace.

Sex

For some sexually active couples, beds with plenty of bounce may be preferred. While memory foam is great for motion isolation, it won’t provide much bounce. However, adding coils can help provide more buoyancy, and latex beds have lots of bounce to them as well.

Pressure Relief

A mattress that delivers both pressure relief and back support could improve sleep and promote an overall healthier life.

Most brands offer beds in a medium or medium-firm feel since this is the comfort level that should give enough support and pressure relief to the majority of people. Some companies sell beds that are softer or firmer, though, because those with more unique frames, such as very lightweight or heavy individuals, need more customized comfort to avoid an improper balance of pressure relief and support.

Edge Support

Our Testers testing Edge Support for each mattress

The amount of resistance a mattress can provide around the edges will determine its edge support. Edge support might not seem like an essential feature; however, if a bed sags towards the perimeter, it can be tricky to get up from the bed. Unsupportive edges can be a critical feature, especially if you have back pain.

Furthermore, a lack of edge support prevents you from utilizing the entire surface when sleeping, which is good to keep in mind if you sleep next to a partner. Mattress types that use coils are often great for edge support, and several memory foam manufacturers put higher-density foam around the edges to provide additional resistance.

Budget

Finding a mattress that suits your budget and individual needs is critical for a purchase you’ll appreciate for years to come.

Best Mattress FAQs

How much should I spend on a mattress? Is expensive better?

Expensive does not always mean better quality. Certain brands may be able to offer a quality mattress at a lower price than another manufacturer for a variety of reasons. For example, they could be buying materials from different places or paying their staff at varying rates.

The online sales model, which eliminates middle-man retailers, also helps bring down costs on high-end beds.

When is the best time to buy a mattress?

National holidays are often excellent times to catch a great mattress deal. Memorial Day, President’s Day, 4th of July, Veteran’s Day, Labor Day, and Black Friday are popular times for mattress sales. If you can wait a few months until a holiday rolls around, you might find significant savings.

Many mattress brands also release new models in the early summertime, so buying just before then could present some excellent bargains as stores try to clear stock to make room for new products.

Learn More: Best Time to Buy a Mattress

How often should I replace my mattress?

Generally speaking, you should replace a mattress every 6-8 years. However, this all depends on the mattress. If you don’t weigh much, it’ll endure longer, and if you weigh more or sleep next to someone, it might wear out quicker.

For this reason, material quality and the overall durability of the product are important as you search for a new bed. If you’ve snagged a quality product, you likely won’t have to worry about a replacement as soon.

For More Info: How Often Should You Replace Your Mattress?

How do I choose my mattress?

Finding what’s right for you will always be a personal decision. No matter how reputable a company is or how many individuals enjoy their products, you may feel differently and it’s essential to listen to your body.

If you’re waking up with aches and pains, take note. Have a look through our charts and guidelines above in regard to your sleep habits, and hopefully, that will help you find something comfortable.

Read Our Full Guide: How to Choose a Mattress in 5 Easy Steps

How do I compromise with my partner so we both sleep well?

With the right choice, neither partner should have to compromise. We recommend choosing a bed with good motion isolation, a medium-firm feel, a little bounce, and cooling features to help you both sleep soundly. Once you know what matters to you both, look for a bed that incorporates these features.

Is it better to buy a mattress online or in the store?

Buying a mattress online or in-store both have perks and drawbacks. Shopping online often gets you access to high-quality beds at lower costs because they’re being sold directly to consumers. The downside, though, is that you don’t get to see and touch the beds before purchasing. In this case, be sure you buy a bed online with a generous trial period.

Conversely, shopping in-store gives you access to lots of beds in person, along with face-to-face customer service. However, this method can also mean higher prices due to overhead costs.

What mattress types are most comfortable?

The mattress types that are the most comfortable will depend on the individual sleeper. Each mattress type has its pros and cons that work for some and not for others. For example, if pressure relief is a top concern, you may find that memory foam mattresses feel most comfortable. Therefore we recommend assessing each type and seeing how they correlate with your sleep style and preferences.

What is the best mattress for back pain?

The best mattress for back pain will have strong support and a medium-firm feel (or firm if you’re a heavier sleeper). Typically, beds with coil units have enhanced support that can help people with back pain.

Additionally, mattress companies will implement zoned support, which gives stronger support in heavier areas and softer support in lighter areas for advanced comfort. Beds with zoned support are also popular for those with back pain.

What’s the best mattress for side sleepers?

The best mattress for side sleepers will have a soft or medium firmness and great pressure relief. Memory foam is usually a popular choice for side sleepers because it relieves pressure very well. However, latex can also deliver quality relief, particularly if it contains Talalay latex, which is softer than Dunlop.

Conclusion: The Best Mattress for You Will Suit Your Sleep Needs

Because different people will have different sleep styles and quirks, there’s no way to identify the one best mattress of 2024. Rather, it’s all about what suits your individual sleep needs.

Finding a mattress that matches your personal requirements can feel overwhelming as you navigate so many options, consider your budget, and prepare for a years-long commitment to a product. However, the abundance of choices means that the odds of finding your best mattress match are high—especially when you have expert guidance on your side.

I hope that our mattress reviews and buyer’s guide can help you feel more confident in selecting a mattress that meets all your essential needs for a good night’s rest.
