Best Mattress for Side Sleepers (2024)

Side sleeping has a lot of benefits as a body position. It not only encourages healthy spine alignment but also reduces the risk of several conditions, including back pain, heartburn, snoring, bloating, and constipation.

However, side sleepers may experience hip and shoulder pain due to the pressure exerted on these areas in bed. They’ll typically require more pressure relief from their mattresses than back or stomach sleepers.

With this and other features in mind, I’ll share the best mattresses for side sleepers below. These beds should comfortably cradle your key pressure points so that you can snooze on your side without stress.

What’s the Best Mattress for Side Sleepers?

The Saatva Classic is at the top of our list due to its luxurious features and the all-around comfort and support it can offer to side sleepers. Plus, the Saatva comes in three firmness options for even more customized comfort for different body types.

How We Choose the Best Mattresses for Side Sleepers

As one of the lead product testers for Sleep Advisor, my job is to thoroughly evaluate mattresses in our testing studio. I test for multiple categories important to consumers to determine which beds I think are a good fit for certain sleepers.

For this roundup, I compiled a list of mattresses that myself and other testers have rated well for side sleeping. Side sleepers have unique needs, so I made to sure to feature beds that I think most side sleepers would be happy with.

Additionally, I had our Chief Medical Advisor, Dr. Raj, review this full page for medical and health accuracy based on his years of experience and triple board certification background.

What We Want to See in a Mattress for Side Sleepers

Pressure Relief

Pressure relief is a big one for side sleepers because it can help prevent them from waking up with aches on the side they’re lying on. The mattresses on this list have all received high scores for pressure relief from our team.

Foams in the Construction

In order to get pressure relief, you’re going to need a mattress that has cushiony foams in it to cradle those joints. You’ll find that all the beds on this list have great comfort layers that should serve side sleepers well.

Good Support for Side Sleeping

While support is vital for side sleepers, support shouldn’t be overlooked either. That’s why the beds here also faired well for support for most side sleepers, which means their spine should remain in a healthy alignment to prevent back pain.

Why the Saatva Classic Earned Best Mattress for Side Sleepers Overall

The Saatva Classic’s claim to fame is that it contains two innerspring units for enhanced support. But that doesn’t mean it neglects the cushioning that side sleepers crave—on the contrary, its plush pillow top hugs pressure points like the hips and shoulders. My fellow reviewer Stuart was also charmed by its soft surface: “Right when I lie on this mattress, I feel a plush, comfy cover.”

The Classic expertly blends this softness with its signature support for a feel that should please most dedicated side sleepers. If that’s not enough of a siren song, you can also customize this bed’s firmness by picking between Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm models. For side sleepers, I’d recommend one of the first two!

What’s the Saatva Classic Made Of?

The Saatva Classic stands either 11.5 or 14.5 inches high, depending on which height you order. It begins with a 3-inch Euro pillow top dressed in breathable organic cotton. The pillow top’s comfort foam should feel welcomingly soft even as its quilting firms up under your lumbar spine.

The next layer consists of a band of memory foam positioned beneath the lower back for targeted support. It leads into the first spring unit: a set of pocketed “comfort coils” that compress individually as pressure is applied. They’re also thicker in the lumbar area for added pushback.

The inside of the Saatva Classic Mattress
The inside of the Saatva Classic when I cut it open in our testing facility.

Underneath is the second spring unit, wherein the coils are interconnected. A “Lumbar Zone® Active Spinal Wire” increases the resistance of the springs around that same lumbar zone.

As for edge support, the Classic boasts a perimeter lined with firm, high-density foam.

My Take: “The Classic’s customizable features cater directly to your sleep needs, You need something softer? Great, you can do that. Something firmer? Also an option.”

What I Liked

  • Built to your specifications – The Classic’s versatility means that “you can sleep in just about any position on this mattress and still feel comfortable,” said Stuart. Because you’re able to choose your desired height and firmness, your Saatva should feel as though it was constructed just for you.
  • Lots of lower back support – It does a great job of supporting your lower back thanks to the dual coils. I also think this bed offers tons of lumbar support.
  • Stable edges – I value the strength of the Saatva Classic’s edges. Both lying and sitting at the edge, I was completely secure when testing this bed.

Potential Drawbacks

  • It’s not exceptionally soft – The Classic does have two spring units inside, so side sleepers who prize a mattress that really sinks in might be disappointed. “If you need a lot of motion absorption or more of a cradling feel, this might not be the bed for you.” Stuart said.
  • No high-tech cooling materials – The Classic’s cooling capabilities come from its breathable cover and the airflow between its springs. For very hot sleepers, that may not be enough temperature regulation. I felt like my body temperature was maintained throughout the duration of testing, but I wouldn’t say this is specifically a cooling mattress.

Customer Reviews of The Saatva Classic

The Saatva Classic rates 4.8 stars out of 5 on Saatva’s website. One negative aspect customers found with the Saatva Classic mattress is that it may feel too firm for some users, while a notable advantage is its high-quality materials, providing durability and support.

Why the Helix Midnight Earned Best Hybrid Mattress for Side Sleepers

As one of many mattresses in Helix’s Core Collection, the Helix Midnight was created specifically to satisfy side sleepers. It has a medium-firm feel that preserves both support and a pillowy surface. When lying on it, my fellow tester Emma enjoyed “how my hips and shoulders have a little cushion around them.”

Because it’s a hybrid, you’ll also get some springiness as part of the package. “It definitely has good response and bounce,” said Emma, who is typically a combination sleeper. “I can move and adjust positions, no problem.”

What’s the Helix Midnight Made Of?

The Helix Midnight has five internal layers and stands 11.5 inches tall.

Under its soft cover, its first comfort layer consists of Memory Plus foam—a proprietary material that Helix developed to improve on traditional memory foam designs. This layer should mold to your body and relieve pressure from the parts that bear the most weight.

Next are two layers of Helix Responsive foam. Both have a medium feel, and they work together to deepen the mattress’s cradling effect while also adding crucial support.

A closer look at the Helix Midnight mattress construction
The construction of the Helix Midnight mattress.

The Midnight’s coil unit follows. It features pocketed coils that are reinforced on the long sides of the bed to keep the edges from buckling too much. They sit on top of a base layer of solid, reliable DuraDense foam.

Our Take: “This bed is a hybrid with decent bounce, so we were actually really surprised by how well it isolated motion.” Emma Mattei, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What I Liked

  • A balanced feel – When you’re a side sleeper, you want a fair amount of softness to your bed, but not so much that you become trapped within the layers. Emma liked how the foams in the Midnight “feel soft, but not too soft, like I’m sinking in and getting stuck.”
  • Couples should enjoy it – “Most couples will love the Helix Midnight,” Emma remarked. “The high-performing edge support combined with limited motion transfer makes this a great option for people who share their bed, whether that’s with a partner or the family dog.”
  • It’s priced affordably – Emma called the Helix Midnight “a killer value for the money.” Compared to other hybrids on the market, it’s less likely to cause sticker shock.

Potential Drawbacks

  • It’s not super plush – “If you want that old-school memory foam feel, this bed may not be for you,” Emma cautioned. The Midnight has a classic hybrid feel, with a soft beginning and a supportive, springy base.
  • … But it’s too plush for stomach sleepers – On her stomach, Emma felt her hips sink into the Midnight a tad too much. “I’m still decently comfortable,” she said, “but I might suggest a firmer mattress for exclusive stomach sleepers.”

Customer Reviews of The Helix Midnight

The Helix Midnight rates 4.5 stars out of 5 on Helix’s website. The main negative is that reviewers tend to find it too soft for their liking and feel as though they’re sinking. But overall, users say they’re getting a great nights’ sleep and some pain relief.

Why the Puffy Lux Hybrid Earned Best Mattress for Side Sleepers with Hip Pain

The Puffy Lux Hybrid is a natural match for folks who sleep on their sides. It’s a plush mattress that should excel in cushioning sensitive joints.

The coils underneath the three layers of foam help to balance softness and support, ensuring you stay elevated enough while still getting “hugged” by the mattress. All of this should benefit sleepers with hip pain.

What’s the Puffy Lux Hybrid Made Of?

The Puffy Lux is 12 inches tall and has six total layers counting its two covers. The top cover is hypoallergenic, stain-resistant, and removable via zipper.

Beneath that cover are three layers of foam: a layer of cradling Cooling Cloud™ foam that’s infused with gel to run cooler than typical foam, a layer of plusher pressure-relieving foam, and a humidity resistant Climate Comfort™ foam layer that allows for airflow through the mattress.

Take a closer look at the Puffy Lux Hybrid construction
Exploring the inside of the Puffy Lux Hybrid

The support layer of the mattress combines both foams and individually wrapped Contour-Adapt coils for motion-isolating stability. Finally, the bottom grip base cover prevents your mattress from shifting around.

My Take: The top three layers of foam do a great job contouring to your body, which will help keep pressure off key areas like the hips and shoulders. It’s got the signature cloud-like feel that Puffy mattresses are known for.

What I Liked

  • Strong edges – The Puffy Lux Hybrid’s coil unit provides reinforcement along the perimeter of the mattress, and I was admittedly surprised by just how much these edges held up. You should be able to make full use of the mattress’s surface area.
  • Pressure relief star – It’s rare that we say this for hybrids, which tend to prioritize firmness and bounciness, but the Puffy Lux Hybrid has stellar pressure-relieving ability. It should work great for side sleepers, of course, but also back sleepers.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Not the bounciest – Though it’s a hybrid bed, the Puffy Lux Hybrid’s top foam layers end up mitigating a lot of the springiness from its coils. Restless sleepers who change positions may find themselves “swallowed up” by the foam top.
  • Not for heavy or stomach sleepers – As a stomach sleeper myself, I noticed during testing that the Puffy Lux Hybrid is too soft to keep me properly lifted. This should be the same for folks who weigh over 200 pounds and need a firmer surface.

Customer Reviews of The Puffy Luxe Hybrid

The Puffy Lux Hybrid boasts several 5 star reviews on its site from customers who credit the comfort of the mattress and its ease on their aches and pains for their high ratings.

Why the WinkBed Earned Best Mattress for Side Sleepers with Back Pain

The WinkBed’s Euro pillow top has a dreamy, plush feel that’s perfect for side sleepers. But it also has both foam and coil enhancements that target the lumbar region of the back, adding specialized support to the mix. These elements of the mattress make it an appealing choice for side sleepers who experience back pain.

“As someone who’s an exclusive side sleeper, I like that this cradles my body but it’s also supportive,” said our reviewer Mark. His colleague Sean shouted out the zoned coil unit, saying that even as the springs supported his weight, the zoning allowed for “plenty of pressure relief for my shoulders and hips, which I really appreciate.”

What’s the WinkBed Made Of?

The WinkBed has a 13.5-inch profile and comes in four firmness levels, the last of which is intended for heavyweight sleepers: Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus.

Its cover is made of Tencel©, which is a breathable, moisture-wicking fabric produced from Eucalyptus wood pulp. It protects the Euro pillow top’s soft, gel-infused foam. The gel within the foam should prevent too much heat buildup near the mattress’s surface.

WinkBeds Mattress Construction
Inspecting the comfort foam layer inside of the WinkBed.

After subsequent layers of comfort foam, including a LumbarLayer™ that specifically lifts the lower back, you’ll reach the WinkBed’s coil unit. The pocketed coils are zoned to provide different amounts of resistance depending on their location. Coils beneath the shoulders will compress more easily for extra cushioning, whereas those beneath the lumbar spine will give more support.

Additionally, the coils along the perimeter of the bed are reinforced so that the edges won’t dip or sag too much when weight is applied.

Our Take: “I really like that these are handmade, that they’re tufted, and that you lay down on it and you can really feel that pressure relief.” – Mark Mattei, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What I Liked

  • You can choose your firmness level – With four different firmness options to choose from, the WinkBed is one of the most customizable mattresses I’ve reviewed. “People of all shapes and sizes and sleep habits should have something that caters to their direct needs,” said Sean.
  • Abundant cooling features – “From the start, the bed feels cool to the touch when you lie on it,” Sean remarked. The WinkBed’s cooling capabilities stem from its breathable cover, the gel-infused foam in its construction, and the airflow around its individually wrapped springs.
  • Sturdy edges – This mattress should be a good pick for people who find themselves sleeping all the way to one side. “I can roll right up to the edge of the bed without losing that supportive feel,” said Sean.

Potential Drawbacks

  • You may feel motion transfer – “This mattress might not provide the same level of motion absorption as an all-foam bed,” said Sean. Even though the springs are pocketed and compress individually, it’s tough for a hybrid to completely cancel out movement.
  • It’s somewhat bulky – Our testers were impressed by how robust this mattress felt, but once they had it out of the box, they realized that moving it again would be difficult. “It’s quite heavy, so make sure to have a helper if you need to move it,” advised Sean.

Customer Reviews of The WinkBed

On the WinkBeds site, the WinkBed earns a 4.8 out of 5 stars. One drawback of the WinkBed mattress is that it might be too expensive for budget-conscious shoppers, but overall it offers excellent durability and customizable firmness options.

Why the Titan Plus Luxe Earned Best Mattress for Heavy Side Sleepers

Sometimes, mattresses designed for plus-sized people end up feeling too unyielding for side sleepers. But the Titan Plus Luxe is different—it preserves the soft, cushy upper layers that side sleepers need as well as the strong support features that are necessary for larger bodies.

Our tester Sean was very impressed by this comfort-to-sturdiness ratio. “It was soft, but not too soft,” he said. “I never felt like I was stuck or that I was sinking into the bed. Even better, this had all the support I’ll ever need from a bed.”

What’s the Titan Plus Luxe Made Of?

The Titan Plus Luxe has five layers that add up to 13 inches of height.

Its first layer is a 1-inch quilted top outfitted with gel foam. The gel helps to keep the surface of the bed cool, and the foam makes for a welcoming, plush feel.

Next is a 2-inch layer of hyper-elastic TitanFlex™ foam, which contours to the body while also maintaining a useful degree of responsiveness.

Brooklyn Bedding Titan Plus Construction from the lab
The inside layers of the Titan Plus Luxe.

Beneath is a 1-inch layer of Energex™ transition foam, a layer that supports the above comfort foams and segues into the bed’s coil unit.

The mattress’s durable coils are 8 inches tall and individually encased. They’re stronger around the perimeter of the bed for increased edge support, and backed by a 1-inch base of high-density foam.

Our Take: “Specifically constructed for plus-sized individuals, the Titan [Plus] Luxe gently accepts you with a hug and supports you all night long.” – Sean, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What I Liked

  • Soft with a sturdy foundation – “Sleeping in a bed that’s too soft or without proper support can be like sleeping in a pool of quicksand,” said Sean. “That’s not the case here.” He appreciated how the Titan Plus Luxe had a lot of give in its comfort layers, coupled with a reliably supportive base.
  • Cozy for all body types (and couples) – My fellow testers, Emma and Sean have notably different body types, but both of them enjoyed the Titan Plus Luxe. If you’re paired with a partner with a drastically different silhouette, this bed could be a cozy compromise. “With its traditional medium firmness, both partners, regardless of body types, should find their sleeping needs satisfied,” said Sean.
  • Responsive and motion-isolating – The springier foams in this bed, combined with its coil unit, mean that you can adjust easily without shaking the whole mattress. “I found that its motion isolation made it easy to get in and out of bed and reposition myself,” said Sean.

Potential Drawbacks

  • It’s not the softest bed on this list – “This still may be too firm for some folks,” Sean cautioned. Because it’s built for heavier bodies, this hybrid may feel a little hard to very petite side sleepers.
  • It’s a heavy mattress – Sean’s biggest complaint about the Titan Plus Luxe was that it was tough to transport once unboxed. “It can be a bit of a beast to move, especially if you’re going up stairs with it,” he said.

Customer Reviews of The Titan Plus Luxe

Users on Titan by Brooklyn Bedding’s site have given the Titan Plus a 4.7 out of 5 stars. Customers find the Titan Plus mattress to offer exceptional durability and support, but some mention that it might be too firm for those who prefer a softer feel.

Why the Nolah Evolution Earned Best Couple’s Mattress for Side Sleepers

The Nolah Evolution is memorably lofty mattress with all the right ingredients for side sleeping alongside a partner: great motion isolation, stellar edge support, and a balanced feel that starts with a plush surface.

“When I crawled into this bed, I could really feel it gently cradle my body,” said our tester, Stuart. He went on to praise its strong zoned support system its fortified edges. “This is an excellent mattress for couples,” he concluded. “You could build your house on Nolah’s edge support.”

What’s the Nolah Evolution Made Of?

At 15 inches high, the Nolah Evolution is an impressively thick mattress. It has eight total layers if you count its top cover, and comes in three firmness options: Plush, Luxury Firm, and Firm.

Its cover is made of organic cotton and ArcticTex™ fibers that help to redirect uncomfortable warmth. Underneath is a 2-inch Euro pillow top quilted with soft, contouring foam. The quilting has high thermal conductivity to draw in and then diffuse heat through a surrounding vented gusset.

Taking a look at the Nolah Evolution mattress construction
Cutting open the Nolah Evolution in our testing facility.

Next is a 2-inch layer of AirFoamICE™, Nolah’s proprietary cooling foam. The brand claims that this material is measurably better at pressure relief and temperature regulation than memory foams, as well as more durable.

Underneath are two more foam layers: a 2-inch layer of supportive high-resilience foam, and a 1-inch layer of springy transition foam.

The Evolution’s coil unit boasts 8-inch springs and, according to Nolah, 25% more support than classic innerspring systems. It’s divided into zones that give different levels of pushback to different areas of the body, thereby ensuring that the lumbar spine gets increased support while sensitive joints can sink a bit deeper. The coils around the edges are reinforced to keep the sides from sagging when you sit or sleep on them.

Finally, an underlying layer made of recycled plant fiber gives the mattress a strong base.

Our Take: “I really love the relief I get from the pressure in my hips.” – Liz, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What I Liked

  • Zoned springs – With coils that compress more readily underneath the shoulders and hips, the Nolah Evolution feels like a natural fit for the body. I could even feel the zoned support in the springs working to support my body weight appropriately.
  • Readily responsive – “I found that this mattress is pretty responsive,” said Stuart. “Even though it’s got some plush and sink to it, I was still able to move around and reposition easily without feeling like I was being sucked in by quicksand.” Our fellow tester Liz agreed: “I really love how easy it is to switch between positions.”
  • Dampens motion – Motion isolation is a key consideration for couples, so if you’re looking to share this bed, good news: it keeps movement to a minimum. “You shouldn’t have to crawl around like you’re stuck in slow-motion so you don’t wake up your partner,” joked Stuart.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Too plush for stomach sleeping – Per Stuart, “Stomach sleepers may find that their hips and lower back sink pretty deep into this mattress, and it may not be the most comfortable for long-term sleep.”
  • Lots of layers mean a higher price – The Evolution is stuffed with proprietary materials and stands taller than most of the mattresses I review. As a consequence, it’s also a little more expensive than your average hybrid.

Customer Reviews of The Nolah Evolution

The Nolah Evolution rates 4.5 stars out of 5 on Nolah’s website. Customers frequently commend the Nolah Evolution mattress for its exceptional pressure relief and cooling properties, but some have observed that it may produce slight off-gassing upon unboxing.

Why the Bear Star Hybrid Earned Best Mattress for Side Sleepers with Hip Pain

The Bear Star Hybrid is often billed as a great bed for athletes, but it also works for folks who run hot. Stuart described the cover on this bed as a “refreshing sleep surface” with “a cool-to-the-touch feel,” likely owing to its Celliant® fibers and heat-dissipating HydroCool® technology.

According to Bear, Celliant® can also help with tissue recovery after an active day, and may even improve the quality of your sleep. Combine this with its foam top layers and you’ve got a great soft and supportive bed for side sleepers.

What’s the Bear Star Hybrid Made Of?

The Bear Star Hybrid is 13 inches tall and has five distinct layers. The first is its signature cover, which is moisture-wicking and made with Celliant® fibers. According to preliminary research, these fibers can increase bloodflow to the area of the body they touch, and may encourage faster tissue recovery during sleep.

Next is a layer of Serene Gel Foam. This foam creates a pillowy cushion for sensitive joints, and the gel inside it helps to prevent heat buildup. It’s followed by a layer of Responsive Comfort Foam that also provides pressure relief, but adds a bit of bounce as well.

Take a closer look at the Bear Star Hybrid mattress construction
Taking a closer look at the layers of the Bear Star Hybrid

Beneath the comfort layers is the bed’s coil unit. The coils are pocketed so they compress individually, and they’re strengthened along the mattress’s edges. They’re supported from below by a base layer of high-density foam.

Our Take: “The Bear Star mattress … provides exceptional pressure relief and support for all sleeping positions.”Stuart Petty, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What I Liked

  • Adaptable to lots of sleeping positions – The Bear Star Hybrid will likely feel good to lots of folks, not just side sleepers. As Stuart said, “The responsive comfort foam offers exceptional pressure relief and support, adapting to all sleeping positions.”
  • Tested for safety – The Bear Star Hybrid holds UL GREENGUARD Gold Certification, a tough-to-get credential that guarantees it doesn’t contain certain unhealthy substances and has suitably low emissions of potentially harmful chemicals called volatile organic compounds (or VOCs).

Potential Drawbacks

  • A trifle firm – Very sensitive side sleepers might find the Bear Star Hybrid to be a little tough on their hips and shoulders. An all-foam mattress would work better for them.
  • The upper foams can muffle bounce – According to Stuart, “[This] mattress doesn’t have a lot of bounce, which might be a downside for some sleepers who enjoy a more responsive bed.”

Customer Reviews of The Bear Star Hybrid

Coming in at approximately 4.5 out of 5 stars on Bear’s site, a potential downside customers noted of the Bear Star Hybrid mattress is that some users may find it too firm, but it is praised for its strong support and cooling properties, promoting a comfortable sleep environment.

Why the DreamCloud Premier Earned Best Soft Mattress for Side Sleepers

The original DreamCloud mattress prioritizes support more than plushness, and I heartily recommend it for back sleepers. But the Premier is different—it adds a pillowy Euro top to the bed’s construction, making it far cushier than the standard model. “It’s one of our favorite recommendations for people who sleep on their sides,” said my fellow reviewers, Emma, one of my fellow mattress testers.

I’m also enthusiastic about this super-soft upgrade. It doesn’t sacrifice support for the extra cushion, and the extra padding works great for those with sensitive joints.

What’s the DreamCloud Premier Made Of?

The DreamCloud Premier stands 14 inches tall and has six total layers.

It begins with a cashmere blend quilted cover that sports a delightful cloud pattern. Underneath is the Euro pillow top, which combines two foam layers: an inch of pressure-relieving memory foam, and an inch of soft foam that contributes both plushness and support.

DreamCloud Premier Mattress Construction
Cutting into the DreamCloud Premier.

Next is a 2.5-inch layer of transitional foam that has a responsive, bolstering feel for promoting neutral spinal alignment. It leads into the Premier’s coil unit, where the pocketed springs are 8.5 inches tall and thicker around the bed’s edges.

Finally, a 1-inch base layer of thick foam keeps the mattress stable.

Our Take: “Pressure-relieving memory foam quilted into the Euro top wraps around the body, making you feel snug and secure.” – Emma, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What I Liked

  • A hug for your hips and shoulders – Side sleepers need a lot of give around the shoulders and hips, which can otherwise dig uncomfortably into a bed. The memory foam and soft foam at the mattress’s surface really cradle these key areas.
  • A touch of luxury – Several testers were vocal about how much they loved this mattress’s cashmere blend cover. “It’s a small detail that adds major comfort and luxury to the mattress,” said Emma.
  • Generous policies –My take is that DreamCloud creates affordable mattresses with a luxury feel, with warranties and policies that I rarely see in the mattress sphere—like a lifetime warranty and a year-long sleep trial.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Too plush for stomach sleepers – With that extra softness comes a smidge less lumbar support. People who sleep on their bellies will probably need a firmer bed.
  • Motion carries a bit – I characterize the Premier’s motion isolation as merely fine. You could feel major movements, such as getting in and out of bed or a big shift in sleep position.

Customer Reviews of The DreamCloud Premier

Coming in at 4.5 out of 5 stars on DreamCloud’s site, the DreamCloud Premier receives a majority of positive reviews. Customers praise the DreamCloud Premier mattress for its luxury feel, but some have noted that it may not be the best choice for those on a tighter budget.

Why the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Earned Best Firm Mattress for Side Sleepers

Typically, side sleepers gravitate toward softer mattresses that prioritize pressure relief. But what if you’re a side sleeper that likes the reassuring feeling of a firmer foundation?

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid may be your ideal match. You can try it in a Soft, Medium, or Firm feel to nail down the right balance of solidity and softness.

Mark, an exclusive side sleeper, was pleased with its no-frills construction and medium-firm surface. “I really like when I lay down on my side on this bed,” he said. “This has all the luxury features that you’re looking for in a hybrid mattress … nice pressure-relieving foams on top, supported by the coils beneath. It doesn’t sacrifice support or pressure relief.”

What’s the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Made Of?

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid has five layers that stack up to a height of 11.5 inches. The thickness of each layer depends on which version of the bed you order (Soft, Medium or Firm).

The first layer is a breathable quilted top that stays taut and cozy, rather than retaining your body impressions. It leads into a layer of Supreme Response comfort foam that reforms around your silhouette each time you change position.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Construction from the lab
The construction of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid.

Next is a layer of VariFlex™ foam. This material enhances the support beneath the comfort foam and serves as a transitional layer between the upper part of the bed and its coil unit below.

The 8-inch springs in the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid are individually wrapped and stronger around the mattress’s perimeter. They’re anchored by a high-density foam base.

For an additional fee, you can outfit this bed with a GlacioTex™ cooling cover and pillow top, which should contribute to both temperature regulation and overall plushness.

Our Take: “It’s really bouncy and responsive, which makes it easy for me to flip from my stomach to my side.” – Emma, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What I Liked

  • Affordably priced – “If you’re looking for an affordable and durable mattress, you might just love this bed,” said our tester Emma. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid goes for hundreds less than many other hybrids available.
  • Limits motion well for a hybrid – Even though the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid has springs, its foam layers dampen movement quite effectively. “Couples shouldn’t be bothered by movements across the bed unless they were really sensitive and super-light sleepers,” said Emma.
  • Strong edges – “The edges of this bed hold up great,” Emma remarked. “I can lay right on the edge without feeling like I’m going to fall out. This makes the bed feel a lot bigger because you can maximize every inch of the surface.”

Potential Drawbacks

  • Not soft enough for certain side sleepers – Although Mark enjoyed the feel of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid while lying on his side, Emma was craving more cushion: “On my side, I feel some pressure in my hips and shoulders … If I exclusively slept on my side, I’d probably choose a softer bed.”
  • No bespoke cooling features – According to Mark, “Some sleepers may find [this bed] to be just a little bit hot.” The airflow around its springs may help, but it doesn’t have fancy cooling elements like some of its competitors.

Customer Reviews of The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid

On Brooklyn Bedding’s website, the Brooklyn Signature has 4.7 out of 5 stars. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress receives praise from customers for its versatility with different firmness options, but some have mentioned that it may produce slight noise when bearing weight.

Why the Nectar Earned Best Memory Foam Mattress for Side Sleepers

Nectar is a staple of the online mattress industry, and its original all-foam model is a popular choice among budget-conscious sleepers. Those foam layers can feel particularly restful for side sleepers, as they absorb the pressure around the hips and shoulders without the sometimes-uncomfortable pushback of springs.

I think that this bed would be a treat for lightweight and average-sized side sleepers. Memory foam is such a good material for side sleepers. With the topmost foam layers made for pressure relief and responsiveness, I really like how the Nectar molds around the body.

What’s the Nectar Mattress Made Of?

The Nectar is 12 inches high and has three internal foam layers. They’re covered at the top of the bed by a breathable cover that helps to redirect body heat.

The first 2-inch layer is made of gel memory foam. It’s the most plush layer in the bed, and it molds to your body’s silhouette to relieve strain and pressure. Beneath it is a 3-inch layer of responsive foam that has a springier, more supportive feel.

Testing the layers and construction of the nectar mattress
Look at the memory foam layers of the Nectar!

Both layers rest on top of a 7-inch ActiveSupport base—a denser, durable foundation of foam.

My Take: The top is soft enough to let you sink in just a bit, especially around pressure points, but you still feel the firm support below.

What I Liked

  • Cozy but secure – The foams in the Nectar are comfortable and cushy enough to hug to the body, but they still keep integral areas—namely the lumbar zone—boosted.
  • Awesome motion isolation – Since these layers are pretty dense, they’re able to stifle the feeling of motion pretty well. If you sleep with a partner and move around a lot, this helps ensure you’re not shaking them awake.
  • Attractive pricing and policies – With a lifetime warranty and a long sleep trial period, Nectar gets the gold when it comes to value and the policies. I’m also a huge fan of its price: A mattress of this quality for under $1,000 is getting harder and harder to come by.

Potential Drawbacks

  • It’s not a cooling champion – Although the Nectar does have some cooling elements, it’s not recommended for very hot sleepers. In my opinion, foam simply isn’t going to sleep as cool as a hybrid mattress, or one with materials geared towards temperature regulation.
  • Not enough support for larger bodies – Foam alone is not going to be enough for my plus-size sleepers. I would say up to the 250 pound mark, it’s fine, but once you’re going past that, it’s not going to give you what you need, support-wise.

Customer Reviews of The Nectar

With thousands of reviews on Nectar’s website, the Nectar mattress has an average 4.8 out of 5 stars. One common customer complaint about the Nectar mattress is its longer-than-average break-in period, while many customers praise its excellent value and comfort once fully settled.

What Should Side Sleepers Look For in a Mattress?

Side sleepers have specific needs when it comes to their comfort and the components of their mattress. If you tend to sleep on your side, we will share the most important factors to consider when shopping for a bed.

Type of Mattress

From our mattress studio, images of our tested mattresses in different materials

Innerspring Mattress

Innerspring constructions bring a significant amount of value to your mattress because of the convenience that they provide. First of all, the overall breathability and airflow of these mattresses are incomparable to anything else on the market. Additionally, the best innerspring mattresses are known for being quite supportive and reliable in this particular regard.

Of course, they do have their drawbacks. For instance, if the coils are not individually wrapped, you may not get the same level of individualized tailoring or pressure relief.

So, is this a good side sleeper option? Overall, some traditional innerspring mattresses may not be the best choice. The reason for this is simple – they bring in significant support, but there is a definitive lack of conformity in some models. This could put more pressure on specific points, and that’s not something that you ought to consider.

Hybrid Mattress

Hybrids are a great solution for shoppers who have their eye on a bed with a built-in coil unit.

hybrid mattress combines the reliable support brought by the steel coil system with more layers of foam for pressure relief and added comfort. The type of foam in these beds varies, but side sleepers will likely prefer hybrids with high-quality memory foam layers on top.

Hybrids are also beneficial because they’re more breathable than all-foam models. While many include cooling features in the cover and foam layers, the spring unit also provides added airflow to keep hot sleepers comfortable. So, if you’re a side sleeper that needs more help to stay cool throughout the night, a hybrid could be a good fit.

Memory Foam Mattress

Memory foam is often the most popular choice when it comes to side sleepers. The best memory foam mattresses offer specific benefits that are especially advantageous to this sleep style.

Contouring and pressure relief are important features side sleepers need to get from their bed. Memory foam is touted as a top material for body-conforming and pressure relief, which is why it’s often recommended for side sleepers. That being said, you’ll need to make sure the memory foam mattress you select is up to snuff.

The softness should be adequate, but support should not be compromised. Lastly, hot sleepers should make sure the memory foam comes with cooling additives like gel or copper.

Latex Mattress

Lying on your side tends to produce the most pressure points because this narrow surface area is bearing your full body weight. To relieve pressure, foam tends to reign supreme, but some foams, especially traditional memory foam, might make you feel trapped or too hot. Latex is in many new products because of its ability to address pressure points without holding your body in place or overheating.

The best latex mattresses are typically buoyant and allow lots of air to flow through them – qualities that help latex beds remain temperature neutral and easy to move around on. Since the material is quick-responding, it should immediately spring right back into its original shape. If you are a combination sleeper or an otherwise active sleeper, these constructions make repositioning easier. This is also helpful for those with mobility issues, who may have more difficulty getting in and out of bed. Furthermore, the bounciness of latex mattresses can be advantageous for sexually-active couples who prefer this feature in their bed.

Not all latex is created equal and, depending on how it is processed, it can produce a remarkably different feel to suit different preferences and budgets. You can choose naturally-sourced latex produced from rubber tree sap or synthetic blends that tend to be more affordable. The Talalay process produces foam considered to be more luxurious because of its consistency and lightness, while the heavier Dunlop latex is processed more naturally and may contain fewer chemicals.

Other Considerations When Shopping for a Mattress for Side Sleepers

Suitable Weight Capacity

Side sleepers will find that their experience of a bed differs greatly depending on their body weight.

Heavier folks may prefer a firmer mattress because it will resist an unpleasant sinking feeling. They’ll also need a bed with a weight capacity that will comfortably accommodate them, especially if they sleep with a partner.

That being said, they may still want an initially plush surface to the bed that cushions their shoulders and hips. The key is finding the right balance of softness and support. Thankfully, many brands have developed mattresses for heavy people that boast sturdy foundations, a firmer baseline feel, and meticulously developed support elements.

More petite side sleepers, on the other hand, will want to look at soft beds that make pressure relief their top priority. Lightweight people are very sensitive to unyielding surfaces, and may feel that a medium-firm bed is a bit too hard for them.

Firmness

Side sleepers also need to be mindful of mattress firmness, which is distinct from mattress support.

A bed that’s not firm enough will allow your body to press too deeply into it, therefore throwing off your spinal alignment and placing more pressure on your joints. On the other hand, a bed that’s too firm will feel uncomfortable and unyielding around the shoulders and hips.

Side sleepers usually go for mattresses on the softer side of our firmness scale as these beds cushion the body’s pressure points. However, your body weight will also play a crucial role in determining the best feel for you.

Cooling

When shopping for a mattress as a side sleeper, be sure to look at each model’s cooling features. For example, memory foam mattresses might be infused with gel or other cooling materials such as graphite or copper. Latex foam is usually quite breathable, and the coil units in innerspring and hybrid mattresses promote airflow.

Mattress covers can also help with cooling, whether they incorporate high-tech temperature-regulating materials or fabrics that breathe.

Motion Isolation

Sleeping with a partner can bring comfort, but if they toss and turn a lot the motion that they create can be distributive. Fortunately, for side sleepers, the types of mattresses that are great for their preferred sleep position and for isolating motion match up well.

To relieve pressure from the shoulders and hips, side sleepers are typically served well by the gentle contouring of memory foam. Memory foam mattresses also do an excellent job at keeping your partner’s movement contained to their side of the bed.

Sex

Side sleepers put a lot of weight on their shoulders and hips through the night, and this can cause pressure to build up. While mattresses made from slow-moving and contouring memory foam are nice for addressing that pressure buildup, they aren’t known for their responsiveness or bounce, which are two factors that make a mattress good for sex.

If you are a sexually active side sleeper, you may want to try out a memory foam hybrid for more bounce or a Talalay latex bed that is both soft and responsive.

Contouring

Contouring refers to the mattress material conforming to the shape of your body when you lie down. A mattress with high contouring capabilities will mold to your silhouette, almost embracing you as you relax into it. This feature is especially important for side sleepers, as it helps relieve pressure around the shoulders and hips.

Of course, different mattresses will have different levels of contouring prowess. Some will compress deeply and contour impressively, whereas others might prioritize responsiveness over contouring.

A firm mattress is likely to provide less contouring than a soft one. Memory foam beds are often considered the contouring champions, as this material molds handily around anyone (or anything) exerting force on top of it. Innerspring beds, on the other hand, do not contour nearly as well.

Pressure Relief

As much as people enjoy sleeping on their sides, there’s no denying that it causes a buildup of pressure around two key areas: the shoulders and hips. The downward force that side sleeping exerts on these relatively small zones can lead to discomfort and pain.

Therefore, a bed that suits side sleepers needs to be excellent at pressure relief. Its comfort layers should be able to absorb the pressure from these “sharp” parts of the body, resulting in a feeling of relaxation rather than strain on your joints or too much resistance from the mattress.

Mattresses made with foams and plush pillow tops lead the way in the pressure-relief department. Look for a bed that emphasizes its softness and its ability to cradle the pressure points that are most relevant to side sleepers.

Edge Support

For those who share a bed with a partner or simply like to utilize the entire bed, edge support is an important component. Considering that side sleepers may lie near the perimeter of the bed, they will likely want a bed that makes them feel secure.

Innerspring mattresses are a great choice for exceptional edge support since they often have reinforced coils on the outside for extra stability. However, these beds don’t offer the kind of pressure relief that side sleepers need.

Certain memory foam mattresses use denser foam around the edge of the bed to help provide security. Memory foam hybrids are also a great option to get the sturdiness of coil support along the edges with the pressure-relieving capabilities of memory foam.

Budget

When shopping for a new mattress as a side sleeper, look for models that have the pressure-relieving qualities you need at a price you can afford.

Don’t skimp when it comes to ensuring the repute of the materials. The comfort and support layers should be durable and, if possible, certified by distinguished outside organizations like CertiPUR-US®.

There are also considerations outside of craftsmanship and materials that might drive up the cost of a mattress. A direct-to-consumer online sales model can save you thousands on a mail-order bed, as their supply chain is much shorter. Oftentimes, a bed travels directly from a factory right to your door. Beds that compress and roll into boxes also save the companies on storage and shipping.

The takeaway? Evaluate your sleep priorities, and shop for a product that delivers in these categories. You might find you spend a lot less money than you originally budgeted.

Benefits of Sleeping on Your Side

Sleeping on your side comes with some useful benefits that could improve your rest and overall health.

  • Could aid digestion and reduce acid reflux1 (left side) – If you’re struggling with uncomfortable acid reflux, considering switching to your side.
  • Alleviates snoring2 – For those sleeping next to a snorer or who snore themselves, side sleeping could reduce snoring by helping to keep the airways open.
  • Supports the glymphatic system3 – The glymphatic system is responsible for “cleansing” the brain. Sleeping on your side could aid this process and boost brain health
  • Better for pregnant women4 (left side) – The American Pregnancy Association recommends that pregnant people sleeping on their left side to boost circulation and the flow of nutrients to the placenta and baby.

Sleep apnea, particularly obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), is one of the most prevalent sleep disorders. OSA is a condition where the upper airways collapse, causing the sleeper to stop breathing during the night. Snoring is one of the symptoms of OSA. Healthcare specialists with Johns Hopkins Medicine say that side sleeping can mitigate mild OSA symptoms by helping prevent the upper airway from collapsing.2

Of course, there are also challenges associated with sleeping on your side. When you’re considering the benefits, make sure not to forget to weigh in the side effects and potential risks as well.

Side Sleeping Tips

Side sleeping is the most common position. However, it can sometimes result in pressure build-up. Here’s what side sleepers can do to rest more comfortably.

  • Put a pillow between your legs – A firm pillow can prevent the collapse of the knee and hip joints, promoting better spine alignment and making side sleeping more comfortable.
  • Avoid keeping your head down – Your ears and shoulders should be in line. Tucking your chin can result in neck pain.
  • Use one pillow – Many people like sleeping on one large and one small pillow. While this may feel comfortable at first, it’s likely to result in neck pain.
  • Get the right mattress firmness – Most side sleepers benefit from a mid-range firmness. This means a mattress that’s not too soft or firm should be the best for this sleeping position.
  • Invest in a good pressure-relieving mattress – When you sleep on your side, your weight is concentrated in the hip and shoulder. This added pressure can become uncomfortable if you don’t have a mattress that alleviates the excess pressure. Look for mattresses with good pressure-relieving materials like memory foam or softer Talalay latex.

Can Side Sleeping Cause Pain?

Side sleeping can cause pain and other bothersome symptoms if you don’t maintain healthy spinal alignment or consider other unique needs and conditions your body might have. Buying the right kind of mattress can assist with aches you have as a side sleeper—but remember, your first stop for diagnosing and treating pain should be your doctor.

Side Sleeping with Hip and Shoulder Pain

Hip pain is especially common and bothersome in pregnant women who side sleep for the safety of their growing babies. The constant pressure on their growing bodies tends to concentrate pain in the hips.

Though it may not manifest immediately, pain often begins to radiate from the hips down the leg and into the knees and lower back. Pain may fade throughout the day as the joints loosen up, and it usually returns the next morning.

If you’ve ever felt yourself following this pattern of discomfort, it’s a safe bet your mattress is either too firm or not supportive enough to keep your spine aligned as you sleep on your side.

Many lightweight side sleepers also experience constant pressure on the shoulders, which can result in stiffness and pain in the morning. The proper mattress for a lighter side sleeper will be soft enough to cradle that pressure point and allow the joint to move throughout the night.

Side Sleeping with Neck Pain

When side sleeping with improper spinal alignment, the pressure can build on your neck, causing unpleasant stiffness and achiness in the morning. If it goes on for long enough, you may have difficulty moving your head and participating in daily activities.

Especially if you’re broad-shouldered, the combination of a pressure-relieving mattress and a lofty pillow could go a long way in correcting spinal alignment and reducing neck pain.

If the mattress is too firm, it could effect blood flow, cutting off vital circulation for the restorative effects of sleep. This could also cause you to wake with numbness and tingling in your arms or other extremities.

If you have severe spinal misalignment as a result of your mattress, it may be necessary to see a chiropractor or other doctor to address the situation before a new mattress can help.

Side Sleeping with Back Pain

Back pain could also be the result of an inappropriate mattress combined with the awkwardness of the side sleeping position. If the mattress is too plush, this can cause your lower back to sink in deeper, as that’s where more weight is being concentrated. On the other hand, if it’s too firm, this could cause serious discomfort, especially if you’re lightweight.

With all this in mind, you need to consider is the density of the foam and the softness of the mattress. Ideally, a good mattress for back pain hugs you without making you feel trapped in it.

At the same time, you’re looking for a combination of softness and support to keep your spine neutral while relieving pressure.

Back pain could quickly escalate and cause a myriad of associated issues. This type of pain is most commonly caused by inappropriate postures and a lack of support while you sleep. If your mattress is softer than it should be, this can disrupt your alignment and cause a sensation of stiffness that will quickly translate to aching and severe pain. Make sure to take this into account when you pick out a new bed.

Best Mattress for Side Sleepers FAQs

Is it healthier to sleep on your side?

Side sleeping is considered one of the healthiest positions, and sleeping on your left side is believed to be more beneficial than sleeping on the right. This is especially true during pregnancy as it improves blood flow between the uterus, heart, fetus, and kidneys. However, either side can offer benefits like chronic back pain relief, pressure relief, reduced snoring, and better spine alignment1.

What are the best pillows for side sleepers?

Choosing the right mattress is the first step to sleeping better on your side. The next step is finding the best pillow for side sleepers to further support your spine in this position, particularly in the neck and shoulders.

When deciding on the right product, you have to consider factors such as the loft (height), what it’s made with, how supportive it is, and any other features such as cooling or use for certain health conditions.

Pillows can come in a variety of materials, including memory foam, latex, buckwheat, down, bamboo, and cotton – each of which has its own unique advantages and disadvantages.

According to Harvard Health2, individuals who regularly rest on their side should use a pillow that is higher under the neck than the head. While support is good, they add that you should avoid pillows that are too firm or high as these could cause stiffness and pain.

What is the best mattress topper for side sleepers?

If your bed is too soft or firm for you, you can add a mattress topper to adjust the bed’s feel. Look for a mattress topper with a medium firmness, providing pressure relief and contouring that your mattress lacks. You’ll also need to consider the thickness and density of the topper. A thicker topper can provide more cushioning, and a denser material will deliver more support and longevity.

What is the best mattress firmness for side sleepers?

Most side sleepers like soft and medium-firm mattresses because of their pressure relief, contouring, and support. Soft mattresses provide the most pressure relief, but these may only give enough support for lightweight sleepers. Furthermore, soft beds may not be the best if you share the bed with someone who doesn’t sleep on their side. Medium and medium-firm beds are also good for side sleepers and often better for those who sleep with a partner as they’re more versatile.

Is edge support important for side sleepers?

Edge support refers to how supportive the mattress is along the perimeter of the bed. Good edge support allows you to take advantage of the full surface space of the mattress and makes getting in and out of bed easier.

As a side sleeper, you may frequently use the edge of your mattress, and if this is the case, make sure that whichever bed you choose scores well for this feature. Some manufacturers use denser foam along the perimeter, while others may use reinforced coils for strong edges.

Are hybrid mattresses better for side sleepers?

Whether a hybrid mattress is better for side sleepers ultimately depends on the particular hybrid and the individual sleeper’s needs. For example, if the sleeper is a heavier person, they could benefit from the extra support of a hybrid. Between hybrids and traditional innerspring models, though, hybrids would be better for side sleepers because they have more foam in them to cushion the shoulder and hip.
