The main factor influencing how your hip is supported or affected in your sleep is your sleeping position.
The position you’re sleeping in could be causing a build up of pressure into your hips, especially if you’re a side or stomach sleeper. Sleeping on a mattress that’s too firm or too soft can also contribute to your hip pain while you sleep. If you’re sinking in too much, or not at all, your spine isn’t properly aligned. A mattress that doesn’t offer support and responsive push-back will inevitably add to your nighttime pain.
According to WebMD, the hip is a ball-and-socket joint. In between your bones, there is a layer of cartilage, which allows for fluidity of movement. As the cartilage naturally wears down due to age, injury, or disease, the hip joint can become overused and that causes pain and makes it difficult to fall asleep.
Here are some common causes of hip pain that may be interfering with your sleep:
- Arthritis: The most common reason for hip pain, arthritis causes your hip cartilage to break down, resulting in inflammation. Overall, sleepers with hip pain fair the best with medium-firm mattresses; however, this varies depending on your weight and body type. The mattress firmness scale goes from 1 to 10, with 1 being ultra-plus and 10 being ultra-firm. To help with hip pain, choose a firmness level between 4.5 and 6.
As we are all aware, there are a good amount of mattress materials and layers of construction, which can make mattress shopping overwhelming. The type of mattress that best suits people with hip pain are as follows:
