To avoid worsening the pain, it’s important to know what how your sleep and hip pain are connected. The main factor influencing how your hip is supported or affected in your sleep is your sleeping position.

The position you’re sleeping in could be causing a build up of pressure into your hips, especially if you’re a side or stomach sleeper. Sleeping on a mattress that’s too firm or too soft can also contribute to your hip pain while you sleep. If you’re sinking in too much, or not at all, your spine isn’t properly aligned. A mattress that doesn’t offer support and responsive push-back will inevitably add to your nighttime pain.

Common Causes and Their Effect on Sleep

According to WebMD, the hip is a ball-and-socket joint. In between your bones, there is a layer of cartilage, which allows for fluidity of movement. As the cartilage naturally wears down due to age, injury, or disease, the hip joint can become overused and that causes pain and makes it difficult to fall asleep.

Here are some common causes of hip pain that may be interfering with your sleep:

  • Arthritis: The most common reason for hip pain, arthritis causes your hip cartilage to break down, resulting in inflammation. Spinal alignment is also very important when it comes to hip pain relief. When you sleep, the idea is to keep your spine as straight as it would be when standing up. “Mattresses that work to keep the spine straight can help relieve hip pain by providing equal weight distribution,” says Dr. Ramchandani. This could help with any back-related injuries or pinched nerves that cause hip pain.

Firmness

Overall, sleepers with hip pain fair the best with medium-firm mattresses; however, this varies depending on your weight and body type. The mattress firmness scale goes from 1 to 10, with 1 being ultra-plus and 10 being ultra-firm. To help with hip pain, choose a firmness level between 4.5 and 6.

Mattress Type

As we are all aware, there are a good amount of mattress materials and layers of construction, which can make mattress shopping overwhelming. The type of mattress that best suits people with hip pain are as follows:

  • Memory Foam: It is no surprise that memory foam is on this list because it specializes in comfort and pressure relief. Memory foam conforms to your body’s shape and cradles your pressure points. Not only are memory foam mattresses supportive, but they are soft as well, making your night of sleep as cozy as possible. The biggest drawback of a memory foam mattress for hip pain is that it can become too soft over time to supply the best support. This is especially true for heavier sleepers, who might find their memory foam mattresses provide insufficient support over time. Memory foam mattresses also tend to retain warmth, so if you tend to sleep hot, you might prefer a hybrid.
  • Latex: Latex mattresses are very similar to memory foam in the way they support and respond to your body—latex is just a natural alternative. Latex mattresses offer springy support that is naturally cool. Both memory foam and latex are perfect materials for side sleepers with hip pain. One drawback of latex is that it doesn’t hug the body as well as memory foam, which means it generally doesn’t provide as much pressure relief. The other biggest downside of latex is simply that natural latex tends to be more expensive than other materials.
  • Hybrid: Hybrid mattresses combine mattress materials to maximize their benefits and serve multiple purposes. For example, a comfort layer of foam, a layer of latex, and a layer of pocket coils will bring superior comfort, support, and pressure relief. The downsides of a hybrid are that it often costs more than an all-foam mattress, and tends to be less able to isolate movement, so couples might find that they can feel each other’s every toss and turn.

A supportive mattress is important for all types of sleepers, but when you have hip pain, support is a necessary component to evaluate. If your mattress doesn’t offer any push-back, you’ll sink in too far, mess up your spine alignment, and build up pressure in the pain points like your shoulders, hips, and knees.

1. Adjust Your Sleeping Position

We’ve covered this earlier, but the position your body is in makes a huge difference in whether you wake up with aches or not. Back sleeping will do the most for easing hip pain at night. But side sleeping works well if you throw knee pillows and a softer mattress in the mix.

2. Use a Mattress Topper

Adding a little extra cushion never hurt anybody, and that’s exactly what mattress toppers will do. Memory foam and latex toppers work the best for pain and pressure relief. 3. Use Pillows Wisely
