We spend about 7-9 hours asleep every night, which is about one-third of our lives. You may be putting pressure on your sore, painful spots as you sleep, exacerbating your hip pain, so it’s important to know what how your sleep and hip pain are connected. The main factor influencing how your hip is supported or affected in your sleep is your sleeping position.
The position you’re sleeping in could be causing a build up of pressure into your hips, especially if you’re a side or stomach sleeper. Sleeping on a mattress that’s too firm or too soft can also contribute to your hip pain while you sleep. If you’re sinking in too much, or not at all, your spine isn’t properly aligned. A mattress that doesn’t offer support and responsive push-back will inevitably add to your nighttime pain.
According to WebMD, the hip is a ball-and-socket joint. In between your bones, there is a layer of cartilage, which allows for fluidity of movement. As the cartilage naturally wears down due to age, injury, or disease, the hip joint can become overused and that causes pain and makes it difficult to fall asleep.
Here are some common causes of hip pain that may be interfering with your sleep:
Your sleeping position plays a key role in your hip pain. Depending on your sleeping position, you may be putting too much pressure on your joints and causing more pain than necessary.
Side sleeping is a position that can make your hip pain worse—especially if you are prone to sleeping in the fetal position. Sleeping on your side presses your hips into the mattress, and, more specifically, curling up into a ball presses your hip joints into the mattress.
However, side sleeping is great for spinal alignment, and if the cause of your hip pain is back or spinal issues, this may be the sleep position for you.

Spinal alignment is also very important when it comes to hip pain relief. When you sleep, the idea is to keep your spine as straight as it would be when standing up. This could help with any back-related injuries or pinched nerves that cause hip pain.
Obviously, the mattress you sleep on has a large hand in helping to relieve hip pain as you sleep, but you’re probably going to have to do a bit more than getting a new mattress. Let’s start with the head. Choose a flat pillow if you’re a stomach sleeper, a firm pillow if you’re a side sleeper, and a pillow with a high loft for back sleepers. This sets the tone for good alignment as we move down the body.
As for the rest of your body, if you are a side sleeper, try sticking a thin pillow in between your knees for better spine alignment. Back sleepers should shove that pillow under their hips. Stomach sleepers should put it under their pelvis.
