Type

  • Innerspring: Innerspring mattresses are primarily made up of responsive coil springs and foam cushioning. They are known for having the feel of a traditional mattress; however, they aren’t ideal for pregnancy. Innerspring beds aren’t durable or pressure relieving enough to sustain the needed support.
  • Memory Foam: Memory foam mattresses use various foam layers to relieve pressure and contour to the body. This works well for pregnancy pains and keeps motion transfer at bay, so your frequent bathroom breaks won’t disrupt your partner. However, memory foam is known to sleep hot.
  • Latex: Latex mattresses are the most eco-friendly because they can be made from natural latex, which is hypoallergenic and dust-mite resistant. But whether the latex is natural or synthetic, latex mattresses are great for pressure relief and are naturally cooling. The only downside is that latex is rather pricey.
  • Hybrid: Hybrid mattresses combine coil springs and memory foam or latex. Sometimes it’s all three. This combination seeks to unite the strengths of each mattress type: the support of innerspring, the motion isolation of memory foam, and the cooling of latex. Hybrid mattresses work well for almost every type of sleeper, including pregnant sleepers.

Sleep Position and Firmness

  • Side Sleepers: It is recommended that pregnant women sleep on their left side because it improves blood flow and circulation. It also helps keep the pressure off of the lower back which becomes more strained as the baby bump grows. Side sleeping requires a mattress with a soft top layer to provide comfort and support on pressure points (shoulders and hips).
  • Back Sleepers: Back sleeping during pregnancy is doable but not recommended. It causes more severe lower back pain and can put pressure on major blood vessels. But if you feel like you must sleep on your back, a firm mattress is best.
  • Stomach Sleepers: Stomach sleeping becomes more and more impossible as the pregnancy progresses, so this is not a position you have to accommodate for, unless your sleep partner is a stomach sleeper.

Temperature

Many pregnant women report sleeping hot, so a mattress with cooling properties would be ideal. Memory foam sleeps the hottest, but cooling foam mattresses do exist that combat the foam’s heat retention. Latex and special cooling hybrid mattresses sleep the coolest.

Support and Pressure Relief

Pregnant women need a mattress that can support the added weight of the baby while keeping their spine aligned. Especially because of the increased risk of back pain, proper posture while sleeping is imperative; the spine should be completely straight from the neck to the lower back.

There is also increased pressure of the hips and shoulders pressing into the mattress. Memory foam and latex mattresses are the best at relieving this added pressure.

Motion Isolation

Motion transfer is only something you have to worry about if you sleep with a partner, because there is very little tossing and turning pregnant women do in their sleep to wake themselves up. But as your bladder has more pressure on it, nighttime bathroom breaks become a multi-night activity. With the wrong mattress this may wake up your sleep partner.

Choose a mattress that has good motion isolation to diminish or eliminate your partner waking up as you get in and out of bed. A memory foam mattress has the best motion isolation feature and innerspring mattresses typically have the worst.
