What We Look For in a Pillow Top Mattress
Cushioning.
First up, we tested out these beds to see if the pillowy softness on top lives up to its name. While the feeling can vary from mattress to mattress, you want to make sure that the surface of the bed is noticeably comfortable and plush.
Pressure relief.
Pressure relief is an important factor when it comes to a cushioning surface. We want the bed to properly conform to your unique shape and prevent pressure from building up in sensitive areas.
Balanced support and softness.
While pillow tops tend to make beds feel softer, that doesn’t mean it has to feel too soft. You don’t want to sink in too far, but you don’t want to feel like you’re sleeping on a rock, either. (Unless you’re into that, in which case, go crazy.)

What I Liked
- Customizable – With two heights and three firmnesses to choose from, it’s easy to tailor the Saatva Classic to your unique wants and needs. Still unsure of which one to pick? For a true Goldilocks mattress, we think the Luxury Firm should fit a variety of sleeping positions and body types.
- High-end delivery – Saatva does not roll their mattresses into boxes, so they’re able to use materials that compress a little less, and each bed uses foams that source a portion of their oils from sustainable materials. As an added bonus, each bed is professionally delivered and installed for the customer’s convenience.
Potential Drawbacks
- Returns cost extra – Despite the swanky delivery, returns at Saatva will run you $99—other brands often allow you to send back a bed for free..
- Some motion carries – The Saatva Classic does just okay at motion isolation, likely the fault of its two coil units that bring plenty of bounce.

Potential Drawbacks
- Could isolate motion better – The WinkBed is a hybrid bed, so it’s not the best when it comes to motion isolation. You’ll probably feel your partner’s movements. If you’re concerned about waking up in the middle of the night, consider a mattress with even more foams on top.
- Firmer options may feel too firm – If you’re looking for plush, stick to the Soft model. We feel the Luxury Firm and Firm versions are a little too firm to give you the full cloud-like effect of the pillow top.

What We Liked

The DreamCloud Premier is a hybrid, combining foam and coils with a medium firmness that should work well for many sleepers (though it is markedly softer than its predecessor). Most notably, its Euro-style pillow top features a cashmere-blend material for the cover. Cashmere is resilient, absorbent, and soft, providing a high-class touch to this mattress.
What’s the DreamCloud Premier Made Of?
The DreamCloud Premier is a whopping 14 inches thick with seven total layers, featuring a mix of coils and CertiPUR-US® certified foams.
- Layer 1 – Top Cover. A cashmere blend cover offers a luxurious feel right at the surface.
- Layer 2 – Memory Foam (1 inch). This memory foam has that classic “hug” response and should easily relieve pressure buildup from the bed’s Euro top.
- Layer 3 – Soft Foam (1 inch). A plush foam also found in the Euro top adds even more cushioning comfort.
- Layer 4 – Transition Foam (2.5 inches). This standard foam layer keeps the comfort layers and coil layer separate.
- Layer 5 – Coil Unit (8.5 inches). The pocketed coil unit should provide ample support for good spine alignment. Coils at the edges are thicker to mitigate sagging around the bed’s perimeter.
- Layer 6 – Base Foam (1 inch). The base of the Premier is a conventional foam for extra support and motion isolation.
- Layer 7 – Lower Cover. The bottom cover of this bed is designed to keep it from sliding around. It also features four handles, so you can move it with ease.
My Take: The DreamCloud Premier is a step up from the brand’s flagship mattress known for its supportive lift and luxurious cashmere cover. It retains all that from the original, plus more soft foams that give it a plusher feel on top.
What I Liked
- Fair price – Luxury doesn’t have to come at an exorbitant price: sales bring the price of a Premier queen down to just over $1,000.
- Side sleeper’s dream – The pressure-relieving capability of the DreamCloud Premier is A+. Side sleepers should enjoy the soft, cushioning Euro Top and the support provided by the coils underneath.
Potential Drawbacks
- Not for stomach sleepers – While this bed is a match for side sleepers, I can’t say the same for stomach sleepers. As one myself, I couldn’t ignore how much my hips sank into the mattress.
- Edges could be better – DreamCloud reinforces the edges on all their beds, but the Premier’s fall short. Laying near them is fine, but when you sit directly on them, they’re going to sag.

What We Liked
- Good for couples – The Avocado Green has plenty of bounce thanks to its use of latex and coils, yielding ease of movement for sex or just nightly tossing and turning. The motion isolation was also fairly impressive in that regard—you may feel some movement, but not as egregiously as you would on most hybrids.
- Certified safe – Avocado has gone the distance to certify it is an all-natural hybrid, securing certificates from third-party organizations such as GREENGUARD, Made Safe®, and OEKO-TEX®. The cotton used in the cover and flame-retardant wool are both certified organic.
Potential Drawbacks
- Still a high price – The conscientious organic construction of this mattress is a boon for eco-conscious sleepers, but can be a drawback for budget shoppers. Stuart noted that “looking into the mattress can also be a bit pricey, but it’s definitely worth it to get these higher quality materials.”

- Sturdy edges – During testing, I was able to push directly into the edges of the Saatva Latex Hybrid without any give. You should feel secure laying or sitting on the perimeter of this bed.
Potential Drawbacks
- Too firm for some – The Saatva Latex Hybrid can support a variety of positions, but some sleepers might not be able to find the right amount of sink they need to feel comfortable. Latex doesn’t have the exact same pressure-relieving feel as softer memory foams, meaning some lighter side sleepers or those with pain concerns might prefer a plusher bed.
- Motion carries – This bed has Bounce with a capital B, which unfortunately can translate to decreased motion isolation. If you sleep with a partner, you’re likely to feel each other’s movements.

What We Liked
- Cooling features – Innerspring beds are known for great air circulation, and this mattress should sleep cooler than all-foam models (and perhaps most hybrids, thanks to its two coil units). The cover also includes a breathable Tencel™ textile and a layer of organic wool from India to wick away any moisture that may collect.
- Bouncy yet motion isolating – Two coil units produce double the bounce, but both of these being individually wrapped, plus the layers of foam and wool between them, mean that this bed can still absorb a lot of motion. Combination sleepers who share the bed should appreciate this balance.
Potential Drawbacks
- Not for foam fans – This bed has some foam layers but won’t provide the same plush, “hugging” feel as a memory foam bed. However, if you find you need more pressure relief, you could always add Brentwood Home’s memory foam topper for a softer feel.

What I Liked
- Keeps you aligned – The Saatva HD’s zoned latex, coils, and spinal wire all assist with keeping your body elevated and aligned. Back sleepers in particular should find a good match in the Saatva HD if they’re looking to mitigate pain from a saggy mattress.
- Sturdy – At nearly 16 inches thick, this bed is the tallest on the list—and, in my opinion, one of the sturdiest. It should last you a long time.
Potential Drawbacks
- Sub-par motion isolation – I wasn’t totally impressed with this bed’s ability to dampen motion. You’re probably going to feel your partner moving around on this bed.
- Too firm for smaller sleepers – Since this bed is designed with plus-sized sleepers in mind, lighter folks may find they can’t achieve a comfortable sink. This can be a problem if you and your partner are different sizes.
