How to Find the Best Sheets

When shopping for new sheets you’ll want to consider material, durability, price, warmth, thread count, and a few other factors.

Understanding Thread Count

Thread count is one of the only factors some people consider when purchasing a set of sheets, and many believe the higher the better. But in reality, thread count is important but probably doesn’t matter as much as we once thought. Thread count can be an indicator of a sheet’s softness and strength, but some sheets with an ultra-high thread count actually aren’t any better quality than those with a lower count.

For a combination of comfort and quality, look for a thread count somewhere between 300 and 500, though it’s not uncommon to find quality options outside that range.

The biggest thing to remember is thread count shouldn’t make or break the sheets you decide to buy.

When shopping for sheets, you’ll mainly encounter two types of weave: percale and sateen.

Percale sheets are created through tightly weaving an equal number of horizontal and vertical yarns. They offer a cool and crisp feel, and for this reason are usually preferred among people who sleep hot.  Percale sheets normally have a thread count of 180 or higher and are praised for their durability.

Sateen sheets are created through a process that weaves a higher number of vertical than horizontal yarns. The process results in sheets that are soft, smooth, shiny, and warm, though often not as durable as percale.

Many people think of sheets as a general one-size-fits-all type deal, but certain mattresses require special sheets. Specially, we’re referring to deep-pocketed sheets.

Why does your sheet fit matter? If your sheets aren’t pocketed enough to reach around your mattress entirely, you’ll have to deal with your sheets popping off the edges. If your sheets are too big for your bed, they will bunch up around you and move in your sleep, which doesn’t make for a comfortable night’s sleep.

Making your bed is difficult enough. Do yourself a favor by being sure you select the right fit for your sheets to make your mornings easier.

(P.S. When looking to match the inch-height of your sheets and mattress, don’t forget to factor in the height of a mattress topper if you have one on your bed.)

Sheets vary greatly in price, ranging from $15-$20 at the low end all the way up into the thousands for luxury options. Price is dictated by material, thread count, durability, brand, and many other factors, though expensive doesn’t always mean better. Many fancy sheets are wonderful, but luxury sheets are by no means a requirement for sleeping well. Here are some recommendations for various price points.

Temperature Control

Your chances of sleeping well takes a serious nosedive when the temperature isn’t just right. With so many bedding options available, there’s really no reason to spend the night shivering or sweating. How well a set of sheets will regulate your body temperature is largely dependent on the material.

If you are looking for sheets that keep you warm, go for flannel, fleece, silk, and heavyweight cotton. If you are looking for sheets that keep you cool, look for linen, bamboo, microfiber, tencel, and lightweight cotton.

Speaking of materials, there are so many bed sheets available on the market! In general, sheets will fall into one of the following categories:

  • Linen
  • Flannel
  • Silk
  • Polyester
  • Microfiber
  • Bamboo / Rayon
  • Cotton (including Egyptian Cotton)
  • Blends (a mixture of one or two of the above types).
