OUR REVIEW PROCESS

We personally test every mattress we review in our Mattress Lab. Our team has conducted over 1,000 hours of product testing to select the best brands for our readers. We use the same 6-point testing procedure and 8-point evaluation in our Mattress Lab for every single mattress, making our review process the most comprehensive in the industry. You can take a look at all the factors that go into our testing and help us generate our Mattress Advisor Score here:

Spinal alignment How well the mattress keeps your spine in its natural alignment You want to avoid unnatural or dramatic spine positions that cause back pain
Edge support How much support the mattress provides, on the end of the mattress and the sides You want a sturdy edge if you sleep on the side of the bed or use the end of the bed to put your shoes on
Responsiveness How well the mattress responds to your movement and adjusts to your body position When you move around or change positions, you want your mattress shape to recover and support your new position
Motion transfer How well the mattress performs in isolating the feeling of movement and absorbing motion If your sleeping partner gets up or moves around, you don’t want your sleep to be disturbed
Durability/lifespan Quality and durability of materials, structural support, and expected lifespan of the mattress You want to get your money’s worth and buy a mattress that will last you many years
Cooling properties How well the mattress promotes airflow and breathability, factoring in heat retention and cooling features You want your body temperature to be optimal for quality sleep
Ease of set-up How easy the mattress set-up process is, including factors like weight, mobility, the time it takes to unbox, and how many people are needed You want to know if you need help to set up your bed when it arrives
Trial period Length of time offered to decide if you like the mattress You may want to try different mattresses to find the right one
Refund policy Ease of return process including refund policy and how the mattress is removed from your home You want to get a full and hassle-free refund if you’re disappointed with your mattress
Warranty Length of warranty and what is covered You’re investing in bed you’ll have for a while, and it should last
Shipping Time and cost (if any) for shipping the mattress to your home Each bed ships differently, and it’s a big package that you’ll have to move
Customer service Response time, level of detail provided to answer questions, how helpful the support team is You want someone available to answer your questions
Social impact Social missions, charitable causes, and sustainability efforts that the mattress company engages with You know you’re buying from credible brands that abide by high environmental and sustainability standards

Each of these factors is rated on a scale from 1-10 and then weighted based on importance to generate the Mattress Advisor Score.
