Tuft & Needle Mattress Review Highlights

  • Universal Firmness: The medium firmness of the T&N mattress feels comfortable for most body types and sleeping positions. It is firm enough to support your weight, and soft enough to cushion pressure points.
  • Motion Transfer: The Tuft & Needle mattress isolates motion before it reaches the other side of the mattress, so couples and light sleepers will notice less disruptions from sleeping partners.
  • Spinal Alignment: Your spine stays in a neutral position while sleeping on this mattress. In other words, you have great sleeping posture, which is just as important as waking posture for reducing or eliminating back pain.
  • Responsiveness: Tuft & Needle uses a proprietary foam that is designed to have the bouncy feel of latex without compromising pressure relief or contouring.

Compare the Makeup

The Brooklyn Signature and Tuft & Needle mattresses have different constructions that create very different feels. Tuft & Needle is a simple 3-layer foam bed that has a quick response time, but not as much pressure relief, whereas the Brooklyn Signature is a foam and coil hybrid with lots of pressure relief and a plush, bouncy feel.

Inside the Brooklyn Bedding Mattress

Inside the Brooklyn Signature mattress
  • Quilted Mattress Topper: The Brooklyn Signature top layer is a combination of a quilted fabric cover and a thin layer of plush, impression-resistant foam.
  • TitanFlex Foam: The comfort layer is a responsive foam layer infused with patented gel that cools your body and regulates the temperature of the mattress surface.
  • Energex Support Foam: The second foam layer is denser and more contouring than the first. It serves as a transition layer between your body and the coil layer.
  • Individually Wrapped Coils: The pocketed coils create a more traditional bouncy mattress feel and improve the overall responsiveness of the mattress.
  • Support Foam: The base layer is made of high density foam that keeps the mattress level and well supported.

Inside the Tuft & Needle Mattress

  • Mattress Cover: The Tuft & Needle mattress cover is soft, stretchy, and breathable. It’s made from a blend of polyester and micro polyamide, which dries significantly faster than cotton. The cover is also resistant to pilling and tearing.
  • Adaptive Foam: Tuft & Needle’s Adaptive Foam top layer is a proprietary foam blend that is equally responsive and contouring. It has a breathable open cell structure, and is also infused with temperature regulating graphite and ceramic gel beads.
  • Base Layer: The supportive base layer is made from high density polyfoam that is firmer than the top layers and prevents sagging.

Motion Transfer

Our motion transfer test is a way to measure how well a mattress prevents disruptions from traveling across the mattress surface. Both mattresses scored above average in this category, but the Tuft & Needle does a better job of motion isolation than the Brooklyn Signature, so it’s a better choice for couples and light sleepers.

Edge Support

Edge support is often an underrated mattress quality, but it’s especially important if you need to utilize the full width and length of your mattress, or if you often find yourself sitting on the edge of the bed.

The Brooklyn Signature mattress scored significantly higher than the Tuft & Needle for edge support, although Tuft & Needle still scored above average. We recommend the Brooklyn Signature for those concerned about sinking or rolling off the side of the bed.

Pressure Relief

The Brooklyn Signature also outperformed the Tuft & Needle mattress in the category of pressure relief. Again, both mattresses scored above average, but the Brooklyn Signature is definitely the better choice for side sleepers.

Stomach sleepers need a combination of pressure relief and spinal alignment, and since both mattresses received the same score for spinal alignment, the Brooklyn Signature is cumulatively the better choice.

Back sleepers need the least amount of pressure relief, but it is still an important factor, particularly if you tend to start the night on your back and rotate to your stomach or side.

The Brooklyn Signature mattress is a noticeably cooler mattress than the Tuft & Needle, due in part to the breathable pocketed coil layer and gel infused foam.

The graphite and ceramic beads in the Tuft & Needle mattress definitely add a cooling element, but not as much as the cooling features in the Brooklyn Signature.

In Summary: Which Mattress is Best?

Side and stomach sleepers get better pressure relief on the Brooklyn Signature soft or medium mattress. Back sleepers will like the T&N or Brooklyn Signature firm mattress. Couples get better motion isolation with T&N. Hot sleepers will sleep cooler on the Brooklyn Signature. Budget shoppers save more with T&N.
