Casper Waterproof Mattress Protector Performance Highlights

✅ Pros

  • Waterproof: Unlike some mattress protectors that are just water-resistant, this one is fully waterproof.
  • Cooling: Don’t worry about overheating with the Casper Waterproof Mattress Protector on your bed, it’s very breathable.
  • Undetectable: You won’t hear or feel Casper’s Waterproof Mattress Protector.

❌ Cons

  • Price: The Casper Waterproof Mattress Protector isn’t as affordable as some other mattress protectors on the market.
  • Size Compatability: This mattress protector only fits beds that are 16″ tall so if your mattress is taller than 16″ it won’t work with it.

Construction

Casper’s Mattress Protector is constructed with a layer of waterproof material sandwiched between a quilted polyester knit top and polyester blend elastic skirting. Here’s what we noticed about each component of the mattress protector.

Knit Top

Casper’s knit top is cross-stitched from a blend of polyester and spandex. The spandex makes a big difference in functionality. The cover stretches over mattresses up to 16” in height without shifting. Casper also adds labels at the head and foot of the cover to help you orient the protector while you’re making your bed.

The cover material is frequently used in high-quality athletic clothes. It keeps you cool while you sleep in the same way it keeps marathoners cool when they race in the summer. We noticed no heat pooling under our bodies while testing this mattress protector.

Waterproof Layer

This is where the real magic happens. Casper uses polythene for their waterproof material. Polythene (also known as polyethylene) is a really common plastic, used for packaging and even waterproof outdoor gear. This layer is laminated with PUR adhesive, which is both safe and effective. Generally, Casper tries to eliminate as many chemicals as possible in their products.

In addition to keeping spilled milk off of your mattress, it sleeps cool thanks to microscopic pores in its design. As a result, liquids and other substances stay away from your mattress, but air moves freely in and out.

Elastic Skirting

The perimeter of the mattress protector consists of skirting with a 360-degree grip that clings to your mattress. It’s made of polyester, nylon, and stretchy spandex

Pro Tip: Casper recommends washing their mattress protector before you use it because washing and drying cause the textiles to tighten. Before the first few washes, you may notice that the skirting feels a bit loose, but machine washing on warm and tumble drying on low should “make the shoe fit.” Do not dry clean your Casper Mattress Protector

What Stands Out About the Casper Protector

Sleeps Cool: Casper’s mattress protector is high in breathability, thanks to the microscopic pores in the knit top and waterproof material. You don’t need to worry about hot air getting trapped under your body.

Quiet: Most people have slept on a mattress protector that sounds like a plastic chip bag. Not so for Casper’s protector. They engineered it to stay quiet even when used by the most restless combination sleepers.

Waterproof: The vital waterproof layer keeps your mattress clean and dry, so go ahead and drink your coffee in bed.

Comfy: Casper designed their mattress protector not to affect the feel of your mattress. They even performed thermal and humidity testing to make sure it was light, cool, and comfy.

Customer Reviews

  • “My kids have accidents frequently on their beds (which are also Casper), and the mattress stays dry every time. Not only do they work well but they are also comfortable & quiet. It’s like it’s not even there.” – Sasha
  • “Love this thing. My son dumped an entire baby bottle on his bed and this thing did it’s job. Mattress was 100% clean and dry.” – Amazon reviewer
  • “We have an adjustable base with a queen Tempur-Pedic mattress and this mattress pad is the first one not to constantly slip off when adjusting the base. I water tested the surface and the under layer stays dry. This mattress pad does not affect the temperature of the bed and feels like we are laying directly on our mattress.” – Annoynomus Reviewer

Quick Definition: What is a Mattress Topper?

Before we dive in, let’s clarify exactly what a mattress protector is and is not. The sole purpose of a mattress protector is to prolong the lifespan of your mattress by keeping out anything that could cause damage or decay. Common examples include liquids, dust mites, allergens, and bed bugs

In contrast, a mattress pad is basically a fitted sheet with a thin layer of foam for added comfort. A mattress topper is a top layer of foam 1-4 inches tall that is added to a mattress to improve the feel or adjust the firmness level.

Casper does have a mattress pad and foam topper [link to review] in their Casper Sleep catalogue, but this review will focus on their cooling mattress protector

Final Breakdown

There’s lots to recommend Casper’s Waterproof Mattress Protector. Not only does it keep liquids and other unsavory substances away from your mattress, but it also stays cool. Most reviewers say it’s worth the cost, and you get 30-days to test it out risk-free. Plus, Casper often runs special discounts on their products. Mattress Advisor’s vote: Give it a try!

FAQs

According to Casper, most waterproof mattress protectors last between one to two years. Ones made from quality materials, like this one tend to last longer.

Casper recommends washing your waterproof mattress protector every few months to ensure it stays free of dirt and germ buildup. It’s also good to wash it when accidents or spills occur. To wash your mattress protector, hand wash and air dry only. Heat drying in your dryer can cause it to shrink.

When buying a mattress protector, look for one with the following features:

  • Fitted Design: Find a mattress protector that will stay in place when you sleep but comes off easily during cleanup.
  • Breathability: Just as it’s important to find a breathable mattress, a mattress protector should also promote airflow so you can have a cooler sleep.
  • Waterproofing: As part of its protecting job, a mattress protector should be waterproof to provide spills from ruining your bed.
  • Undetectable: A good mattress protector is one that you barely notice is there and doesn’t have a crinkly feel or noisy sound when you move on it.
