Key Similarities
- Incredible Back Support: You can’t go wrong with either mattress if you have back pain. They both scored very well in spine alignment, which means they’ll maintain your posture while you sleep, alleviating back pain.
- Similar Materials: The Casper Original and the Dreamfoam Essential are memory foam mattresses and use CertiPUR-US Certified foams.
- Not for Hot Sleepers: If all-foam mattresses have one downfall, it’s cooling. Memory foam and polyfoam both tend to trap body heat. While both of these mattresses employ cooling materials to lessen this effect, they’re still not going to offer you the cooling of hybrid, latex, or innerspring mattresses.
- Great for Side Sleepers: Fantastic pressure relief scores mean these two beds are good choices for side sleepers. They both gently cradle your shoulders and hips so you don’t wake up with new joint pain.
Key Differences
- Responsiveness: The Casper Original is very responsive, which is perfect for anyone who moves around a lot during sleep. The Dreamfoam Essential did not score as well in this category, so it isn’t great for combination sleepers who toss and turn at night.
- Price: The Casper Original has a price tag around the average of what we expect for quality bed-in-a-box mattresses. On the other hand, Dreamfoam offers beds on the very affordable end of the spectrum–great for budget shoppers!
- Firmness Options: Most sleepers prefer a medium-firm comfort level, which is exactly what the Casper Original offers. That said, if your preference differs from medium-firm, Dreamfoam has you covered with five different firmness options.

Casper Original Review Highlights
- Supports Tossing and Turning: If you toss and turn, you need a mattress that quickly adjusts to your new position, which is what we measure when we test mattresses for responsiveness. The Casper Original scored perfectly in this category.
- Great for Seniors: The Casper Original has what we look for in a mattress for older adults. It offers outstanding back support and joint cushioning and has super-sturdy edge support for extra stability when you get in and out of bed.
- Suits All Sleep Positions: Zoned support foam offers gentle cradling of shoulders for side sleepers while firmer core support suits other sleeping positions. A responsive feel helps combination sleepers change positions.
- Good for Plus-Sized Sleepers: The Casper Original mattress can support larger folks, especially those who are side or back sleepers.
- Zoned Support: Three ergonomic zones in the Casper Original make it fantastic at supporting your lumbar spine while gently cradling your joints. This zoned support contributes to the Casper Original’s great spine alignment and pressure relief scores.
- Other Options: Casper offers various other beds, including the Element Pro, Original Hybrid, Nova Hybrid, Wave Hybrid, and Wave Hybrid Snow.

Dreamfoam Essential Review Highlights
- Budget-Friendly Choice: At only $524–$949 for a queen, the Dreamfoam Essential is one of the best options out there for budget shoppers.
- Available in Uncommon Sizes: With various size options outside the norm, Dreamfoam is excellent for small spaces. Whether you’re looking for a bed for an RV, dorm room, or a small guest room, you can find the right size bed for your space.
- Can Suit Almost Any Firmness Preference: The Dreamfoam Essential is available in five thicknesses, and each option has a different firmness. From the 6” firm through the 14” medium-soft option, Dreamfoam has a firmness that suits most preferences.
- Great for People With Back Pain: In our Mattress Advisor lab, the Dreamfoam Essential received outstanding scores in spine alignment and pressure relief–the two most important categories for back-pain sufferers.
- Other Options: Dreamfoam by Brooklyn Bedding offers three other mattresses: Dreamfoam Hybrid, Dreamfoam Copper, and Dreamfoam Latex.

Compare the Construction
Even though the Casper Original and Dreamfoam Essential are both memory mattresses, they have key distinctions. Read on to discover more about each layer of these beds and what they mean for your future sleep.

Inside the Casper Original
The Casper Original mattress boasts three carefully crafted layers of foam that provide a great sleeping surface for back, stomach, and side sleepers.
Unlike many memory foam mattresses with a top layer of memory foam, Casper uses polyfoam for its first layer. The result is a soft, responsive feel that doesn’t have the sinking-in sensation of a traditional memory foam bed. With hundreds of perforations throughout its foam, the Casper avoids making sleepers excessively hot (although it’s still warmer than most beds with innerspring coils).
Next, the zoned memory foam layer balances pressure relief and spine alignment with three ergonomic zones. Softer memory foam allows for gentle cushioning of the shoulders and knees, and firmer memory foam in the lumbar region provides support. This combination makes the Casper Original a suitable mattress for all sleep positions.
Last, high-density polyfoam makes up the final layer. Its sturdy support keeps the mattress from sagging, enhancing overall durability and lifespan. The all-foam construction means the mattress has minimal motion transfer, which is excellent for couples.
- Breathable Open-Cell Foam: A polyfoam top layer with hundreds of perforations offers cushion and allows for more airflow than a typical foam layer.
- Zoned Memory Foam Transition Layer: An ergonomic memory foam layer boasts three zones of varying firmness. Softer foam cradles your shoulders, knees, and ankles, while denser foam supports your back and hips.
- Durable Polyfoam Base Layer: High-density polyurethane foam provides strong support and keeps the bed from sagging.

Inside the Dreamfoam Essential Mattress
The Dreamfoam Essential is a memory foam mattress available in a variety of depths (6”, 8”, 10”, 12”, or 14”) to give you your desired level of comfort and support.
The first layer of gel-infused memory foam delivers a gentle hugging feel. The thickness of the comfort layer varies between 2” and 3” based on which mattress depth you choose. In the 12” and 14” beds, a VariFlex transition foam layer follows to add greater support and cushion. Finally, a 4” to 8” polyfoam support layer offers durability and stability.
Dreamfoam uses open-cell foam throughout to aid in airflow and cooling. Thanks to differences between the thickness of the layers in the multiple mattress options, the comfort level of the Dreamfoam Essential spans a wide range—from medium-soft for the 14” to firm for the 6”. Due to the thin comfort layers, we do not recommend the 6” or 8” for most adults, especially side sleepers or plus-sized people.
- Stain-Resistant Panel: The top mattress panel includes stain-resistant fabric to protect against spills and stains.
- Gel-Foam Comfort Layer: Open-cell memory foam infused with cooling gel delivers marshmallow-y cushioning for your shoulders and hips.
- Transitional Layer (12” and 14” model): VariFlex transition foam provides an additional layer of contouring support, great for side sleepers.
- Support Foam: A base layer of high-density polyfoam gives this mattress support and durability. The thickness of this layer varies between 4” and 8”, with greater thickness delivering superior longevity.

Spine Alignment
You likely try to maintain good posture all day long, but it’s up to your mattress to do this same job while you sleep. If you want to avoid back pain or ease an already existing ache, spine alignment is a crucial factor to consider when mattress shopping.
Thankfully, both the Casper Original and Dreamfoam Essential knocked it out of the park in this category, each scoring 9.5/10. You can count on either of these beds to keep your spine in a neutral position. Because we reviewed the 14” Dreamfoam Essential, keep in mind that versions with thinner comfort layers may differ in lumbar support.
Responsiveness
If you toss and turn while trying to fall asleep or change positions frequently throughout the night, responsiveness is vital to getting a great night’s sleep. Responsiveness refers to how quickly your mattress adjusts to your new position.
This is one category in which these two beds performed very differently, with Casper coming out ahead. With a 10/10, the Casper is an outstanding choice for the restless sleepers among us. Unfortunately, the Dreamfoam Essential did not fare so well, earning a 7.5/10, so it’s not one of our picks for combination sleepers.
Cooling
Memory foam mattresses are not known for their cooling properties, and Casper and Dreamfoam do not escape this generalization. However, because both companies prioritize cooling (with a perforated top layer in the Casper Original and cooling gel in the Dreamfoam Essential), they’re not bad for foam mattresses. But if you sleep super-hot, these are not the beds for you.
Hot sleepers tend to fare best with hybrid and innerspring mattresses—which allow for unbeatable airflow—as well as latex mattresses, as latex is naturally cooling. If you sleep hot, consider one of the beds that made our list of the Best Cooling Mattresses for Hot Sleepers.
Which Is the Best Mattress for You?
The Casper Original and the Dreamfoam Essential are both comfy and supportive memory foam mattresses. But which is best for you?
We recommend the Casper Original over the Dreamfoam Essential for heavyweight sleepers, combination sleepers, couples, older adults, and people with back pain. The Dreamfoam Essential is a better pick for budget shoppers, people looking for unusual mattress sizes, and anyone who wants a soft or firm mattress (thanks to the various firmness levels).
Both companies offer 10-year limited warranties and similar trial periods, although Dreamfoam provides a slightly longer 120-day trial period compared to Casper’s 100 days. With excellent customer service scores, you can count on either company to support you through your purchase process and, if things don’t work out, any returns.
