Key Similarities
- Firmness Level: Both are medium-firm mattresses that fall at a 6 on the 1–10 firmness scale, with 10 being the firmest. This is the preferred firmness of the average sleeper and works for all sleeping positions.
- Sleep Trial: Both mattress companies offer the bed-in-a-box standard 100-night sleep trial with free returns.
- Price: Both the Cocoon and Leesa have similar pricing, with price points that fall around average for a memory foam mattress.
Key Differences
- Cooling: The Leesa sleeps noticeably cooler than the Cocoon Chill mattress, making it a better choice for hot sleepers.
- Feel: While Leesa’s memory foam layer is found in the second layer of the mattress, the Cocoon’s is located on the top. This means the Cocoon has a more traditional memory foam feel that hugs the body and the Leesa a more balanced foam feel.
- Responsiveness: Because Leesa’s top foam layer is a more responsive polyfoam and the Cocoon’s a contouring memory foam, it’s easier to move around and get comfy on the Leesa mattress.
- Edge Support: While both mattresses have sturdy edges, the Cocoon’s are just slightly more supportive.
- Body Types: The Leesa mattress supports sleepers who weigh up to 300 pounds and the Cocoon those who weigh up to 250 pounds—although we only recommend heavy back sleepers opt for either mattress.
Cocoon Chill Mattress Review Highlights

- Good for Couples: The Cocoon mattress excelled in our motion isolation and edge support tests. These properties mean couples can sleep together peacefully.
- Pressure Relief: The upper memory foam layer evenly distributes weight. This means very little pressure on sensitive areas, which is most important for side sleepers.
- Spine Alignment: Few all-foam mattresses support healthy spine alignment the way that the Cocoon Chill does. Proper alignment helps ease neck and back pain.
- Universal Comfort: The Cocoon Classic’s medium-firm feel works well for side, back, and stomach sleepers. It’s the preferred firmness of the average person.
- Other Options: For more support, a cooler sleeping surface, and a bouncier feel, consider the Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress.

- Excellent Performance: Leesa is one of the highest-scoring mattresses that we’ve had in our lab. It received an 8.5/10 or higher in each of our performance tests, which are those that influence the sleeping experience.
- Sleeps Cool: Thanks to breathable foam layers and an airy mattress cover, the Leesa facilitates ample airflow, keeping the sleeping surface cool.
- Good for Couples: Leesa’s all-foam construction readily dampens motion transfer. Combined with comfortable and sturdy edges, you have a mattress that works well for couples and those who co-sleep.
- Incredible Value: The Leesa is a high-quality foam mattress at a competitive price. It’s also one of the most durable all-foam beds that we’ve seen, making it a great value.
- Other Choices: Leesa also crafts other models, including the Leesa Hybrid, Studio, and Leesa Legend mattresses.

Compare Feel
The Cocoon Chill and Leesa are both three-layer all-foam mattresses. Thanks to differences in their proprietary foams and the placement of their memory foam layer, these mattresses do have a different feel. If you love the contouring memory foam feel, opt for the Cocoon as memory foam makes up the top layer. For a more responsive, even feel, go with the Leesa.
Inside the Cocoon Chill Mattress
The Cocoon Chill is crafted from three unique foam layers. Here’s a breakdown of what’s inside.

- Cooling Mattress Cover: A cover with phase change materials reduces built-up body heat.
- Perfect Fit Memory Foam: A memory foam top layer brings the marshmallow-y memory foam feel to the Cocoon Chill. This means a hugging feel and impressive pressure relief.
- Responsive Comfort Foam: A proprietary polyfoam that quickly adapts to movements, making it easy to move around. It also brings added cushion to areas like the hips and shoulders without allowing for excess sinkage.
- Essential Support Layer: Ultra high-density foam rounds out the all-foam mattress feel while adding durability and support.
Inside the Leesa Mattress
Leesa is a memory foam mattress made from three layers of foam. Let’s take a peek inside.

- Mattress Cover: A soft twill cover is breathable, supporting optimal temperature regulation. Its grey color and four-stripe design distinguish it as a Lessa mattress.
- Plush Comfort Layer: Soft foam along the top of the mattress brings immediate comfort. This top layer is designed to immediately adapt to your movements so you never feel stuck.
- Contouring Memory Foam Layer: Conforming memory foam cushions pressure points and supports healthy spine alignment, relieving aches and pains. This layer is to thank for Leesa’s slight hugging feel.
- High-Density Support Foam: Durable polyfoam is used to enhance durability. This final foam layer further minimizes motion transfer and brings an all-foam feel.

Edge Support
No one wants to feel like they’re going to roll off of the edge of their mattress. Unfortunately, some all-foam beds have squishy edges that can make that possible. We tested the sturdiness of both the Leesa and Cocoon Chill mattresses and were impressed by both. However, the Cocoon Chill’s edges were slightly studier, which is a valuable asset for couples who like to spread out.
Responsiveness
Have you ever felt stuck when lying on a memory foam mattress? If you answered yes, know that you’re not alone. One of the top complaints about all-foam mattresses—particularly those with thick memory foam layers—is that it’s hard to move around. Fortunately, many companies spend lots of time and money on designing foams that deliver pressure relief without that quicksand feeling.
Responsiveness is a measure of how easy it is to move around on a mattress. In essence, it describes how quickly a mattress responds to movement. People who toss and turn at night will likely sleep more soundly on a responsive mattress.
As a general rule, innerspring mattresses are the most responsive and all-foam beds the least, but there are exceptions to this rule. Two of these exceptions are the Original Leesa mattress and the Cocoon Chill bed.
Both of these beds earned excellent scores in our responsiveness evaluation. But with a 9.5/10 for responsiveness, you’re going to be hard-pressed to find a more responsive all-foam mattress than the Leesa. If you move around a lot at night, you may be best served by the Leesa.
Cooling
The body undergoes natural temperature fluctuations at night, and it needs to be able to slowly cool down for restorative deep sleep. Unfortunately, a lot of mattresses trap body heat, making it impossible for the body to reach the temperature that it needs to. This is why a lot of people wake up hot and sweaty at night.
All-foam mattresses tend to sleep hotter than their hybrid and innerspring counterparts. But thanks to a variety of innovative cooling technologies, not all memory foam mattresses sleep hot. We examined both the Leesa and Cocoon Chill mattresses and found the Leesa to sleep cooler than the Cocoon Chill. If you struggle with night sweats, you may want to go with Leesa.
Social Impact
Leesa is one of the few mattress brands that have a clear social mission. In fact, you can check out a social impact report from the previous year on their website. For instance, in 2019, Leesa donated mattresses, pillows, and cleaning supplies, raised funds for homelessness, and more. Sealy, however, does not have this type of social involvement.
Verdict: Which Is the Best Mattress?
The flagship Leesa mattress is great for hot sleepers, people who toss and turn, couples, and value shoppers, no matter their sleeping position. The Cocoon Chill is even better for couples thanks to sturdy edges, and its medium-firm feel works well for the average sleeper.
Both of these mattresses earned high marks in our tests for spine alignment and pressure relief, which is good news for people with body aches or back pain. And with each of them performing well during our in-house testing, it can be hard to decide which one is best for you.
The good news? They’re both excellent mattresses that come with risk-free 100-night sleep trials. Go with the mattress that scored the highest in the tests that matter most to you, and then try it out in the comfort of your own bedroom. You’ll likely be pleased with whichever mattress you choose.
