Latex Mattress Pros and Cons
Apr 18th, 2023 •
When debating whether to buy a latex mattress, it’s helpful to learn about the pros and cons of this type of mattress. Like any other type of mattress, latex mattresses come in a variety of forms. Some companies sell 100% all-natural latex mattresses, made with Dunlop or Talalay latex, while others sell natural, pure, synthetic, or natural/synthetic blend latex mattresses. Depending on the type of latex mattress you get, you may enjoy certain advantages over comparable mattress types, such as memory foam.

Latex Mattress Pros
The following are some of the advantages of buying a latex mattress.
1. Made from all-natural materials
Natural latex is an environmentally friendly material that’s sustainable and non-toxic. Since it comes from rubber tree sap, the trees aren’t damaged when making these types of mattresses.
As mentioned previously, some latex mattresses contain other materials, so they may not be 100% all-natural. To be sure your latex mattress is all-natural, look for certifications, such as the GOLS which confirms that the latex is at least 95% certified organic.

2. Known for being very durable
Latex mattresses typically last longer than all-foam mattresses, with natural latex beds lasting up to 20 years. Synthetic latex mattresses also last a while, but not nearly as long as all-natural latex mattresses. So, while they may cost more upfront, you’re getting value for your money and won’t have to go mattress shopping any time soon.

3. Tend to be hypoallergenic
While some people may have latex allergies, latex is a great material for those with other common allergies. It’s resistant to bacteria, mildew, and mold so you don’t have to worry about those undesirable visitors lingering on your mattress. If you have asthma, rest assured that your latex mattress will be free of dust mites. For those who are allergic to latex, consider buying a latex mattress wrapped in another material, such as wool or cotton, so your body doesn’t come in contact with the latex.
4. Have great motion isolation
Another benefit of using latex in mattresses is that it limits motion transfer well, meaning someone is less likely to feel movement when someone else (or a pet) shifts around on the mattress. Those made with Dunlop latex have especially good motion isolation. This is helpful for couples who sleep together, since it allows them to move around without disturbing their partner.
Latex Mattress Cons
Here are some disadvantages to keep in mind before purchasing a latex mattress.
1. Come with a high cost
Compared to other types of mattresses on the market, latex mattresses can be pretty expensive. Keep in mind that these mattresses have long lifespans, so their return on investment may make it worth splurging on.

2. Often are heavy
Since natural latex is a dense material, latex mattresses can be heavier than traditional mattresses. Moving these beds around from one room to another can be difficult. However, many mattress companies offer white-glove delivery where they will set up your mattress for you and flip it to the other side if it’s a dual-side mattress.
3. Feel firmer than other types of mattresses
If you like a memory foam feel, you may find that a mattress made primarily of latex is too firm for you. It doesn’t conform as well as memory foam due to its structure. However, latex mattresses can be good for those needing more support in their back and tend to be more resistant to sagging.
4. May trap heat
While latex mattresses tend to sleep cooler than those made with memory foam, they still sleep much hotter than hybrid mattresses. Without the use of a coil system, it’s hard to promote breathability in a mattress. If you’re a hot sleeper, consider investing in bedding made with breathable cotton or purchasing a cooling mattress topper.

Latex Mattress FAQs
Q.
Are latex mattresses good?
A.
Latex mattresses are a good option for those with joint pain, shoppers wanting a “forever mattress,” or people wanting a bed made from all-natural materials. However, they come at a higher price tag than other types of mattresses, so if you’re on a tight budget, you may want to consider something more affordable, such as a foam mattress.
Q.
How long does a latex mattress last?
A.
Typically, a latex mattress will last anywhere between 10 to 20 years. This is much longer than the traditional lifespan of an average mattress, which is estimated at around 7 to 10 years.
Q.
Will latex mattresses soften over time?
A.
After buying a new latex mattress, it will go through an initial break-in period where it becomes softer. It then will soften at a slower rate over time but should not soften to the point that you need to replace it before the 10-year mark. Most warranties cover compressions greater than 3/4″ so if significant softening occurs early on, it may be eligible for a repair or replacement.
