Key Similarities:

  • Pressure Relief: The Layla and Purple mattresses both received high scores for pressure relief, meaning that they do a reliable job of reducing stress on pressure points, such as shoulders and hips.
  • Alleviates Back Pain: Both of these mattresses incorporate comfort technologies that help to alleviate back and joint pain. Purple’s Comfort Grid cushions joints and keeps your back aligned, both of which reduce back pain. Layla’s copper-infused memory foam calms inflammation and cools your body, which shortens muscle recovery time.
  • Foam Layers: While the Purple is a hybrid mattress, it does incorporate foam layers. The Layla is an all-foam bed with memory foam top layers.
  • Durable: Both the Layla and the Purple are constructed from durable, high-quality materials. We gave the Layla 8/10 and the Purple 9/10 for durability. Also, both are protected by warranties.

Key Differences:

  • Top Layers: Purple’s top layer is a hyper-elastic polymer grid with numerous open-air channels. It’s probably unlike anything you’ve ever slept on. Layla’s soft and firm top layers are constructed of copper-infused memory foam. They feel a lot like traditional memory foam, but with added support and cooling from the copper.
  • Warranties: Layla’s lifetime warranty protects your mattress against select defects for the entire time that you own the mattress, as long as you purchased it directly from Layla. Purple’s limited warranty only lasts 10 years, but a decade of coverage is pretty good.
  • Responsiveness: A responsive mattress is one that quickly adapts to your changes in position. Combination sleepers love responsive mattresses. Layla received a near-perfect score in this category (9.5/10), while Purple earned an average score (7/10).
  • Trial Period: Layla’s sleep trial is 120 days, while Purple’s is 100 days. During the trial period, you can test out the mattress risk-free. If it’s not the right mattress for you, you’ll receive a full refund.

Layla Mattress Review Highlights

  • The Layla offers not one, but two, different firmness levels. The top layer of each side of the bed is either soft or firm. It’s also not too heavy, so two people should be able to flip it to the other side easily.
  • With two firmness options, Layla customers need not worry about a mismatched fit. Back sleepers and stomach sleepers tend to enjoy the supportive firmer side. Side sleepers typically opt for the plush soft side. Layla also sells a hybrid mattress.
  • Copper has a reputation for improving recovery times for those with an active lifestyle. It’s also believed to reduce inflammation in the body. Layla’s first layers are infused with copper, so it’s an appealing choice for athletes and those with joint pain.
  • The Layla designers incorporated two key cooling technologies into the memory foam layers. Copper naturally draws in heat and disperses it away from your body. Also, the polyester and viscose cover features a THERMOgel cooling agent that helps to reduce the temperature on the mattress surface.
  • Your Layla mattress is covered under warranty for the entire time that you own it. If you notice any sagging, body impressions deeper than 1”, or cracks in them foam, Layla will repair or replace your mattress.
Purple mattress

Purple Mattress Review Highlights

  • The Purple mattress’s top layer is unlike anything else we’ve seen in the mattress industry. It’s designed to cushion your curves with incredible precision. They even pressed an egg into the grid with 1,400lbs of pressure, and it didn’t break.
  • Purple received a nearly perfect score in our lab evaluation for spinal alignment. Good posture while sleeping is just as important as good posture while awake, especially if you are a side sleeper or back sleeper
  • Compared with other mattresses, the Purple sleeps noticeably cool. The grid system creates thousands of open channels across the mattress surface. Hot air easily moves through the breathable cover and the channels.
  • Unlike memory foam mattresses, which can split or crack over time, the Purple has an excellent reputation for performing well beyond the 10-year warranty. We even gave it a 9/10 rating for durability.
  • You don’t need to fret about off-gassing with the Purple mattress. The materials are all completely hypoallergenic, and the foam base is CertiPUR-US certified. It’s also made in the USA.

Differences in Construction

Peek inside the Purple and Layla mattresses for a breakdown of the materials, layer construction, and special features.

Inside the Layla Mattress

  • Soft Side: The top layer is the soft side of the mattress. It’s 3 inches deep, 4/10 on the firmness scale, and has a traditional memory foam feel. The copper in the foam firms in response to pressure, so all of your body’s curves are fully supported. Layla calls this feature “variable support.”
  • AirFlow Foam: The second layer is breathable polyurethane foam. Waves in the foam design improve airflow beneath the thicker soft side, so heat can easily travel away from your body.
  • Support Foam: The third layer is also the base layer. It’s high-density, which helps to reduce motion transfer and add durability.
  • Firm Side: The firm side is thinner at only 1 inch deep. It’s made of the same copper-infused memory foam as the soft side. Bonus: copper becomes antimicrobial when it’s compacted.
  • Mattress Cover: The mattress cover is woven from polyester, viscose, and poly/lycra. Layla incorporates THERMOgel into the fabric, which cools in response to your body heat. Use thin sheets over the mattress cover to prevent dampening of the cooling effect.

Inside the Purple Mattress

  • SoftFlex Cover: The Purple uses an extra stretchy cover to ensure that you experience all the benefits of the flexible comfort grid. It’s also soft and breathable for extra comfort. Keep in mind that the right bed sheets maximize the flexibility of the top layer
  • Comfort Grid: Purple’s hyper-elastic polymer comfort layer is what it’s known for. It provides A-grade pressure relief by absorbing and evenly distributing weight, regardless of your body type.
  • Soft Foam: The transition layer is made of responsive polyfoam. It helps the mattress to respond quickly to your changes in position, which is great for combination sleepers.
  • Base Layer: Purple uses dense polyfoam for their final foam layer. It acts as a sturdy, durable foundation.

How Do We Score Mattresses?

Our Mattress Advisor team puts their expert review skills to work by testing and scoring all the mattresses on our site. That way, you don’t have to nap on countless mattresses to find the one that best meets your needs—because we do it for you. We’ve tallied over 1,200 hours of mattress evaluations to bring you only the most reliable, trusted results. Learn more about our review process here.

Which Is the Best Mattress?

For hot sleepers: the Purple sleeps a bit cooler. For side sleepers: Either, although Layla scored a fraction higher on pressure relief. For budget shoppers: the Layla, especially for King and Cal King sizes. For couples: the Layla offers better motion isolation.

One of these two mattresses is likely standing out to you right now, but if not, we’re here to help you consider the most important factors. While we don’t necessarily have a favorite, we do favor certain mattresses for certain sleepers:

  • If you move around a lot at night, or sleep with a partner, you’ll want a bed high in responsiveness and motion isolation. Layla took the cake in both of these categories.
  • Purple scored higher for cooling, though only by half a point. Still, if you are a hot sleeper, that marginal difference can make a big impact.
