The Layla Mattress and Saatva Classic Mattress are two beds with very different feels. The Layla has a memory-foam construction suited to sleepers who enjoy more body-contouring sinkage. The Saatva’s traditional innerspring feel makes it a better option for those who like feeling “on top of” their beds. We’ve tested both in the lab to compare their key features. Read on to learn more about which will meet your sleep needs.

Key Similarities

  • Firmness Options: The Layla and Saatva both offer different firmness options, which means all sleepers should be able to find a model that works, no matter their sleeping position.
  • Support for Back Sleepers: Back sleepers in particular will get plenty of lumbar support from either bed.
  • Warranty: Both beds come with generous lifetime warranties, which suggests both companies are confident that they are producing high-quality, long-lasting mattresses.

Key Differences

  • Feel: Most models of the Saatva feel firmer and bouncier than the Layla, indicating that the Saatva is a better fit for stomach sleepers and combination sleepers.
  • Pressure Relief: The Layla’s memory foam construction offers more pressure relief than the Saatva, particularly on its softer side. This makes it a good pick for side sleepers.
  • Construction: The Saatva features innerspring support coils that promote cooling airflow and allow the mattress to support heavier body types. The original Layla mattress is made entirely of memory foam, which means it may wear out more quickly. Layla does offer a hybrid mattress that offers innerspring support. Layla Mattress Highlights

  • Great for Side Sleepers: The soft side of the Layla offers excellent body contouring, which can relieve stiffness and pain at pressure points around the shoulders and hips. This makes this bed a great option for side sleepers who rest their weight on these areas at night.
  • Affordability: A queen-size Layla mattress is often around $1,000 during the brand’s frequent sales. This is a great price for a flippable mattress that features high-quality memory foam and cooling technology.
  • Motion Isolation: Layla’s memory foam layers isolate motion very well, which means couples should like this bed. You shouldn’t feel disturbed by a partner moving around on the other side of the mattress at night.
  • Copper-Infused: The Layla is infused with copper, which helps with cooling, reduces inflammation, and naturally repels bacteria. This makes the Layla a great choice for allergy-prone sleepers (or hot sleepers) who enjoy a memory foam feel.
  • Other Options: The original memory foam layer is flippable and features a soft and a firm side. But Layla also offers a hybrid memory foam mattress. This bed is still flippable but provides extra support. If you’re a stomach sleeper who needs a firm mattress and likes the Layla, consider the firm side of the Layla Hybrid.
Another Saatva Classic Pic

Saatva Mattress Highlights

  • Good for Back Pain: The Saatva’s pocketed coil layer does a great job supporting the lower back. That makes this bed ideal for back and stomach sleepers who struggle with back pain. If you sleep on your side and need a little extra cushioning, consider the plush soft model.
  • Cooling: The Saatva’s breathable build means hot sleepers will not overheat on this bed at night. Mattresses that use coil support instead of support foam tend to sleep cooler than all-foam beds like the Layla.
  • White-Glove Delivery: Unlike many online mattresses, the Saatva is not delivered in a box. Instead, Saatva’s team will deliver this bed uncompressed and set it up for you in the room of your choice. If you like shopping online but don’t want to deal with the hassle of unboxing your new bed, Saatva is a great brand for you.
  • Great for Seniors: The Saatva’s taller-than-average profile makes it easy for seniors to climb in and out of bed. The firm and luxury firm models also feel reminiscent to classic innerspring mattresses, which older sleepers tend to prefer.
  • Other Options: Saatva offers several different mattress models, including latex, memory foam, and adjustable beds. Saatva also offers mattresses built specifically for kids and for heavy people.

Compare the Construction

The Saatva Classic and the Layla feel very different because they’re constructed of totally different materials. The Saatva’s hybrid build gives it a firm, bouncy feel ideal for combination sleepers. The Layla’s memory foam construction makes it a better fit for side sleepers and couples who don’t want to feel a partner moving on the other side of the bed.

Inside the Layla Memory Foam Mattress

This flippable bed-in-a-box features a cooling cover to cut down on the heat-trapping tendencies of memory foam. Below that you’ll find either a soft or firm comfort layer (depending on which side you decide to sleep on). This layer of copper-infused memory foam is cooling and antimicrobial.

This makes the Layla a great pick for shoppers with allergies who find their symptoms irritated by traditional memory foam beds. You don’t have to sacrifice a memory-foam feel to fight clogged sinuses!

Below the comfort layers you’ll find a layer of textured airflow support foam to cool down the mattress and help support your back. Below that you’ll find a thick, firm layer of polyfoam that offers support to the rest of the bed. If you opt for the hybrid Layla mattress, you’ll find a coil layer instead of polyfoam. The hybrid model will sleep cooler and feel a little more supportive than the traditional memory foam Layla.

  1. Cooling Cover: The Layla features a silky-feeling polyester, viscose, and polyester blend cover. The cover is infused with Thermogel, a reactive cooling technology that helps prevent overheating at night.
  2. Soft Side: If your bed is soft side up, you’ll find a layer of copper-infused gel memory foam. This layer is cooling, antimicrobial, and offers plenty of soft pressure relief.
  3. Airflow Support Foam: A layer of textured foam promotes airflow and eases you down onto the bed’s support core.
  4. Foam Support Core: A thick layer of polyfoam keeps your back aligned and body supported throughout the night.
  5. Firm Side: If your bed is firm side up, you’ll find a firmer layer of copper-infused gel memory foam under the cover. It’s constructed the same way as the soft side but features a firmer feel.
Inside Saatva Classic

Inside the Saatva Classic Mattress

The Saatva’s layers are carefully crafted to provide ideal lumbar support and a springy feel, making this bed a great pick for those with back pain.

Things kick off with a cooling organic cotton cover. This soft cover is a great choice for anyone with sensitive skin or allergies. Under the cover is a 3” pillow top. The top is made with softer or firmer foam depending on whether you choose the plush soft, luxury firm, or firm mattress model.

Below the pillow top a transition layer of high-density memory foam interacts with a pocketed coil system. Both these layers feature zoned support, which means they are soft at the shoulders to offer pressure relief and firm at the hips to keep your back lifted in a neutral alignment. These layers create a supportive feel similar to that of a traditional innerspring bed.

At the base of the mattress are sturdier steel coils. The Saatva’s dual-coil construction gives it a springy, supportive feel. This means the bed is easy to move around and change positions on. It also means there is plenty of airflow throughout the bed, making the Saatva a good pick for hot sleepers.

  1. Quilted Euro Pillow Top: Under a cooling organic cotton cover is a 3” pillow top layer that provides luxurious-feeling pressure relief. This layer is also quilted for lumbar support, helping keep your spine aligned overnight.
  2. High-Density Memory Foam: A layer of CertiPUR-US Certified memory foam offers pressure relief. It is firmer at the center to help support your lower back.
  3. Pocketed Coils: This mattress features a layer of Lumbar Zone pocketed coils that are firmer near the hips and softer at the shoulders. This helps the mattress contour to your curves and keep your spine straight.
  4. Edge Support: The Saatva is lined in firm foam rails to prevent sagging at the edges. That means you can sit on the edge of the bed to put on socks without feeling it sag around your weight.
  5. Steel Coil Base: A bottom layer of thicker foils promotes airflow and provides extra sturdy, springy support.

Spine Alignment

The Saatva scored higher on the spine alignment test, which makes it a better choice for those with back pain. This is not surprising, since Saatva builds in a special back support layer to ensure you wake up pain-free.

Pressure Relief

These beds have equal pressure relief scores, but side sleepers and those with stiff joints should opt for the soft side of the Layla. It feels softer than the plush soft model of the Saatva because its top layer features more memory foam. Back and stomach sleepers should get the pressure relief they need on either mattress.

Edge Support

The Saatva edges out the Layla when it comes to edge support. It lines its bed with high-density polyfoam to ensure you can roll all the way to the side of this bed without feeling it dip. This makes it easier to get in and out of bed and means heavier people and couples can really spread out at night.

Which Is the Best Mattress for You?

Whether you should choose the Layla mattress or Saatva depends on your sleep needs. We recommend the Saatva Classic to shoppers who like the feel of a classic innerspring mattress. The Saatva “firm” model is firmer than the firm side of the Layla, which makes the Saatva a better pick for stomach sleepers. It’s also more durable, which indicates it’s a  good choice for heavy people.

The Layla is a better choice for those who enjoy a body-contouring feel. Side sleepers and back sleepers who enjoy a gentler feel will like this bed. If you’re looking for a high-quality memory foam bed rather than a bouncy hybrid, stick to the Layla.
