Loom & Leaf and Tuft & Needle are both memory foam mattresses from online mattress companies. The Loom & Leaf mattress came after the luxury mattress company, Saatva, found success with their classic innerspring mattress. Some have even compared the Loom & Leaf to Tempur-Pedic.

Tuft & Needle is a newer mattress company. You may have seen their products at Crate & Barrel and Lowe’s. Consumers love their budget bed-in-a-box mattresses so much that they scored a partnership with Serta Simmons Bedding in 2018.

In this comparison, we’ll cover the different constructions, feels, and performance scores for these two all-foam mattresses.

Key Similarities

  • Medium Firm Option: As far as firmness options go, medium firm is the most popular. It’s soft enough to cushion pressure points and supportive enough to prevent lower back pain. The T&N is medium-firm, and the L&L is offered in relaxed (medium) firm or firm.
  • Breathability: Saatva and Tuft & Needle both prioritize airflow in their mattress construction, whether that takes the shape of a breathable mattress cover, perforated foam layer, or open-cell polyfoam base layers.
  • Responsiveness: The Loom & Leaf and Tuft & Needle each earned top marks for responsiveness. You can count on them to keep up with your changing sleeping positions all night long.

Key Differences

  • Pricing: Tuft & Needle prioritizes affordable prices, whereas Saatva focuses on luxury. Predictably, the Tuft & Needle mattress has lower price points, although both companies offer financing.
  • Sleep Trial: Saatva gives you a full year to get the feel of your new bed. Tuft & Needle gives you 100 nights. Typically, it only takes 30 nights for your body to fully adjust to a new sleeping surface.
  • Warranty: The Loom & Leaf mattress is covered by a warranty warranty, which is much longer than the Tuft & Needle 10-year limited warranty.
  • Motion Isolation: The Tuft & Needle mattress outperformed the Loom & Leaf for motion isolation by a wide margin, making it a better choice for couples who sleep together.

Loom & Leaf Mattress Review Highlights

  • Eco-friendly: Saatva uses as many natural materials as possible, including organic cotton, CertiPUR-US certified foams with minimal off-gassing, and a natural thistle flame retardant.
  • Temperature Regulation: The top layer of the Loom & Leaf mattress is infused with phase change material that draws heat away from your body to keep you at an ideal temperature when you sleep.
  • Durability: All of Saatva’s mattresses, including the Loom & Leaf, are made to order in the USA and covered by generous warranties.
  • White Glove Delivery: Loom & Leaf customers are treated to free white glove delivery and old mattress removal, rather than the industry-standard bed-in-a-box delivery. This service normally costs $150, but you get it for free.
  • Other Options: In addition to the Loom & Leaf relaxed firm and firm mattress options, you can also shop the Saatva Classic, Saatva HD, Zenhaven, Saatva Solaire, Saatva Youth, Saatva Modern Foam, and Saatva Latex Hybrid mattresses.

Tuft & Needle Mattress Review Highlights

  • Universal Firmness: The Tuft & Needle mattress has a medium firm feel that suits a wide range of sleeping positions and body types. It cushions your pressure points and keeps your back well-supported.
  • Motion Transfer: You’ll notice little to no disruptions from sleeping partners on the Tuft & Needle mattress. The high-density foam layers absorb movement before it has the chance to travel across the mattress surface.
  • Spinal Alignment: The Adaptive® foam comfort layer and support foam layer work together to keep your back in a healthy neutral position, which reduces or prevents back pain related to your sleeping surface.
  • Responsiveness: Tuft & Needle’s proprietary Adaptive Foam was designed to join the buoyancy of latex with the contouring, pressure-relieving properties of memory foam.
  • More Models: You can also shop the Tuft & Needle Hybrid Mattress, the cooling Mint Mattress, and the Amazon exclusive Nod mattress.

Compare What’s Inside and Feel

The Loom & Leaf mattress consists of three levels of foam. Customers can pick between a relaxed firm or firm comfort level based on their preferences. Both options give an excellent amount of support.

The Tuft & Needle mattress has a simple two-layer foam construction. It’s soft to the touch and springs back to its original shape when you remove pressure. This mattress is much softer than the Loom & Leaf. If you prefer a firmer bed, go with the Loom & Leaf, and if you enjoy a medium-firm to soft mattress, go with the Tuft & Needle.

Inside Loom & Leaf

Inside the Loom & Leaf Mattress

  • Organic Cotton Cover: Saatva uses high quality organic cotton for their breathable mattress cover, which includes an additional plush foam layer.
  • Cooling Gel Memory Foam: The top layer of foam is infused with cooling gel in a swirl pattern, which ensures even distribution. The foam is also perforated with pin-sized holes that improve airflow.
  • Viscoelastic Memory Foam: A second memory foam layer supports your body weight and contours around your unique shape.
  • Support Layers: A transition pad sits atop two firmer polyfoam layers that keep the whole mattress stable and durable.

Inside the Tuft & Needle Mattress

  • Breathable Mattress Cover: Tuft & Needle covers their mattress with a stretchy polyester-micro polyamide blend. Micro polyamide dries more quickly than cotton and is also resistant to tearing and pilling.
  • Adaptive Foam: The top layer of proprietary Adaptive® foam is infused with cooling graphite and ceramic gel beads. It’s the softest of the two foam layers and feels light and squishy.
  • High Density Polyfoam: The dense base layer keeps you from sinking too far into the mattress and adds longevity to the mattress’s lifespan.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer is measured by gauging how well a mattress isolates movement. For example, a mattress with low motion transfer won’t shake or tilt when your sleeping partner gets in bed with you. This is a really important category for couples or light sleepers.

The Tuft & Needle outperformed the Loom & Leaf mattress in this category. There is still lots to love about the Loom & Leaf, but if you are concerned with motion disruptions, the Tuft & Needle is your best option by far.

Edge Support

Edge support is an important category for anyone who stretches out in bed or sleeps with their arm hanging over the side of the bed. A mattress with good edge support keeps you on the mattress, not the ground.

The Tuft & Needle scored much higher in this category. If you need a mattress that has edge to edge support, choose the Tuft & Needle or buy a larger Loom & Leaf mattress so you have extra room to spare.

Pressure Relief

Pressure relief is the most important category for side sleepers and stomach sleepers who want to prevent cramped shoulders and achy hips. Both mattresses received average scores in this category, with Tuft & Needle outperforming Loom & Leaf by a fraction.

Keep in mind, we tested the relaxed firm Loom & Leaf mattress, so the firm option will provide a little less pressure relief and is best for those who like an especially firm feel.

Our Summary: Which Is the Best Mattress?

The Tuft & Needle provides the most pressure relief for side sleepers, while the relaxed firm Loom & Leaf offers more support to back sleepers. Tuft & Needle is more affordable and gives couples better motion isolation. The Loom & Leaf sleeps cooler, plus you have a longer trial period.

Both of these mattresses are ordered exclusively online, but you can get the feel of a Tuft & Needle mattress at one of their showrooms in Arizona, California, Oregon, Texas, North Carolina, Washington, or Kansas.

Choose the mattress that works better for your sleeping position and budget, and then take advantage of the sleep trials. You can always request a free return from Tuft & Needle or utilize Saatva’s hassle-free return policy (though we highly doubt you’ll want to). Plus, once you commit, you’re protected by Tuft & Needle’s 10-year warranty or Loom & Leaf’s lifetime warranty.
