The ultra-customizable Luxome Layr is like an adjustable bed for your head. Lots of pillow brands tout their “adjustable firmness” when what they really seem to mean is adjustable loft. But the Layr actually allows you to tinker with the firmness by adding and removing gel memory foam inserts designated as “soft,” “medium,” and “firm,” so you can get exactly the amount of support and comfort you need.
Luxome even has a configuration chart to save you time experimenting with various height and firmness configurations. To be honest, the chart reminds me a little of those recipe listings on a bag of Jelly Bellys that shows you how to combine the different candy flavors to achieve some semblance of a “blueberry muffin” or a “strawberry shortcake”—and if you have simple pillow needs, it all might feel a bit overcomplicated.
But—take it from someone who thought they had simple pillow needs but managed to unlock new levels of comfort from the Layr: If you take some time to get to know the pillow and find the right height and softness for you, you might just find yourself sleeping a whole lot better with it. Let’s go deeper into this whole Layr thing together.

What’s Inside
If you’re worried about harsh chemicals in your pillow, here’s another reason to rest easy: The Layr is made from CertiPUR-US certified foam with low VOCs, or volatile organic compounds like harmful gasses. The foam has a gel infusion inside so it sleeps cooler than traditional memory foam. The soft and medium inserts are built with memory foam and down alternative.
The insert covers are made from 100% cotton, and the outer pillow cover is made from a bamboo viscose that feels super-soft against your skin. All are machine-washable for easy cleaning.
Special Features
The Luxome Layr wants to appeal to everyone with its customizable firmness. Here’s where it really stands out:
- Good for Side Sleepers, Back Sleepers, and Stomach Sleepers: The pillow can be configured as low and soft, low and mid-firm, high and soft, low and medium, and more. If you tend to change positions at night, you probably won’t want to wake up and make adjustments to it, but most sleepers will find a firmness and loft setting that works for their most common position.
- Customizable Firmness and Height: This is the pillow’s forte. By adding and removing packets of filling in varying firmness levels, you can find your ideal setting—soft, medium, or firm. You can also make the pillow more or less lofted using the three foam inserts. This gives you options to suit every sleep position.
- Effective Cooling: The Layr has a cool bamboo viscose cover and gel-infused foam at its core, so it stays fairly cool and breathable.
- High-Quality, Eco-Friendlier Materials: The foam inside this pillow is CertiPUR-US certified and free from harmful substances, like volatile organic compounds that create air pollutants.

Sleep Experience
The first thing I noticed about the Layr is how soft the top layer of fabric felt under my hand. Then I took stock of the pillow’s whole look—not only does the Layr have a unique mix-and-match customization to its fill, but it’s strikingly unique in appearance, with a quilted-looking bamboo viscose top and sides that appear to be woven from thick ropes of fabric. I also noticed the pillow’s exterior felt cool to the touch, which is always appreciated down here in Texas.
To put the Layr to the test, I added two inserts to give it a low and medium-level height and firmness, stuffed it into a pillowcase, and put it on my bed. I’m a bit of a pillow snob, so giving an unknown pillow an entire night to win me over (instead of immediately switching out for my ride-or-die favorite) is a big thing for me.
The fact that the Layr stayed under my head until sunrise is essentially a rave review. My neck and head felt supported and comfortable when lying on my side on the Layr, but didn’t feel thrown out of alignment when I flipped onto my back.
My usual pillow is a bouncy latex number that makes it easy to change positions frequently overnight. The Layr felt more memory foam-like and a little slower-moving than that one, but it still supplied plenty of responsiveness and comfort for all the sleep positions I tried.
In the morning, I removed one of the inserts to get a better sense of what the Layr could do when reconfigured. While typically not a stomach sleeper, I felt good when trying it out while resting on my stomach—and a lot more inclined to try sleeping in that position with a flatter, more conducive pillow.
The one configuration I didn’t try with the Layr is using all three inserts. I knew I couldn’t handle the pillow at maximum loft—but those who like a high and soft pillow will likely appreciate that it offers that mode. I recommend this pillow to essentially all sleepers, if it’s in your budget. The fact that you can tweak its firmness and loft makes the pillow a universal win.

Customer Reviews
- “I’ve tried many pillows, including other adjustable pillows, and struggled to find anything that didn’t hurt my head and neck. The shredded foam is so comfy and doesn’t feel lumpy like other shredded memory foams I’ve tried.” — Heather M.
- “This pillow is the best for its design for customizing and the quality is excellent.” — Elaine L.
- “I love that I could customize my pillow to suit my needs for support if my neck and shoulders! The combination of the soft on the bottom and the medium on top has done the trick! I am no longer waking with a headache, neck ache or sore shoulders in the morning!” — Barbara K
Pros & Cons
Pros | Cons |
Mix-and-Match Customization: There are lots of options for configuring the pillow, so most types of sleepers can get the comfort they want from it. This is reflected in customer reviews for the Layr—the vast majority of which express love for the pillow. | Price: This could be a dealbreaker for some. The Layr is a high-quality pillow, and its price reflects that. However, if it’s in your budget, we think the Layr is a good value.. |
Cooling: A combination of materials—a bamboo viscose cover, cotton insert covers, and gel-infused foam—work together to make the pillow feel more breathable and less stuffy. | Return Policy: Luxome gives you 30 nights to try this pillow before returning it. While an entire month might feel like plenty of time to decide if it works or doesn’t work for you, this number is far below the many trial periods we’ve seen from other bedding companies, which tend to average about 100 nights. |
Easy-to-Clean: Not only is the soft bamboo viscose cover machine-washable, but so are the cotton covers to the inserts. This makes it easy to keep the pillow looking and feeling fresh. |
Final Breakdown:
If you want a comfy, high-quality pillow with multiple firmness and height options, the Luxome Layr is well worth trying. After spending a restful night on the pillow, I found it to be comfortable for side sleeping, back sleeping—and even stomach sleeping, with two out of three fill inserts removed.
It’s also a great option for those who feel like they could be getting more support and comfort from their pillow but aren’t really sure how to get there. Just bring the Layr home, and start experimenting until you find your ideal pillow firmness and fit.
