Our Airweave Mattress Review for 2024

Can a single-layer mattress offer both comfort and support? What if cleaning your bed could be as easy as pouring water over the surface?

Motokuni Takaoka once used resin fiber to make durable fishing lines, but after taking over his uncle’s company, he innovated the material to make a product everyone can enjoy: A state of the art mattress. This Japanese company invented polyethylene airfiber® and implemented it into the design of their Airweave mattress.

Our in-depth review of the Airweave mattress uses our scoring system to take you through an airfiber® review and analyze characteristics we consider important for all sleepers. We also review some of the more preference-based features that really help this product stand out.

Who We Recommend The Airweave For:

  • Hot sleepers – The airfiber® technology promotes optimal airflow. This design keeps you cool, so you don’t have to worry about cranking your AC.
  • Back and stomach sleepers – This product is great for the stomach and back sleepers who enjoy an extra firm surface. Sinking too deep into the bed will never be an issue as the firm cushioning works to keep your spine straight. Additionally, the support you find in the center of this bed extends all the way to the edges, optimizing your sleeping surface area.
  • Those interested in a unique sleeping experience – The airfiber® technology provides this product with a one-of-a-kind feel. Sleeping on the Airweave should be like nothing else you have experienced.

Who We Don’t Recommend The Airweave For:

  • Lightweight sleepers – Lighter individuals may find that they do not sink deep enough into this mattress, therefore not getting the desired pressure relief on their hips and shoulders. Lighter people may be interested in the Airweave Mattress Advanced, which provides a softer sleeping option pillow top add-on.

  • Heavyweight sleepers – Similarly, significantly heavier individuals run the risk of wearing out this product faster than the expected nine to ten years. Heavier folks can purchase an Airweave Mattress Topper that should help add additional firmness and support.

First Impressions: Firmness & Feel

Firmness Scale: 8.5/10

Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.

Some people prefer softer beds, while others like sleeping on a firm surface. For this reason, we rate mattress firmness on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. This helps us explain how the bed feels and helps shoppers decide whether it’s the right choice.

The Airweave mattress is on the firmer side, feeling like an 8.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale. This feel is described as firm and may feel even firmer to those who weigh under 130 pounds. Thanks to its firmer structure, you should never feel that you’re sinking into the airfiber® cushion but should sense it delicately cushioning your pressure points.

How Does It Feel?

The polyester cover feels textured and soft to the touch. When lying on this bed, you should notice the firm fibrous layer keeping your weight uniform and well-supported in a very gentle cradle. You should also notice that body heat does not transfer through the surface.

Moving around is a cinch, as the firm surface provides a moderate bounce that works with sleepers, enabling them to reposition with ease. This bed should work great for combination sleepers, especially those who prefer to rest on their back or stomach.

What We Like About the Airweave

  • Washable cover – The Airweave mattress comes with a removable and washable cover, making it easy to clean and maintain for those who sleep with kids and pets.

  • The mattress has an optional pillow top – This bed comes with an optional pillow top made from polyester. The layer is softer and helps add more cushioning for better pressure relief.

  • Proprietary airfiber® core – The polyethylene material is a non-toxic and food-grade plastic that’s quite bouncy but firm. The material has a woven look to it, so it’s breathable and allows plenty of airflow to keep the bed cool.

Our Airweave Complaints

  • The price – Although innovative and unique, this bed is on the pricey side. The Twin size comes at 3,350 dollars while the Queen is 4,500 dollars.

  • It’s thin – This may not be a drawback for some people, but most usually like a taller bed standing at 10 inches at least. The Airweave bed has an 8-inch profile, so it’s thinner than most beds out there.

Testing the Airweave Mattress: How it Performed

We test mattresses by using a few techniques to evaluate their feel, firmness, bounce, motion isolation, and other preference-based features. This should help shoppers understand how a bed feels and whether it would be a good match for their sleeping needs. Testing the Airweave mattress was a unique experience because it’s among the firmest models. As such, it offers some bounce, a little contouring, and excellent support.

Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types

We couldn’t find any official statements about how much weight this bed can handle. However, the company says they tested the bed on individuals weighing up to 220 pounds. This means they don’t recommend it to people over this weight because they’re likely to experience body indents and wear out sooner, although the bed itself feels comfortable at first.

Average-Weight Sleepers (130-230 lbs)★★☆★★☆★★★
Heavyweight Sleepers (+230 lbs)★★☆★★★★★★

Side Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight side sleepers are likely to find this bed too firm. They don’t weigh enough to activate the comfort layer, which means they may struggle with pressure buildup.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight side sleepers should sink deeper, especially if they weigh closer to 230 pounds. Those closer to 130 pounds may want a softer bed.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy side sleepers should enjoy how the comfort layer contours the curves to relieve pressure while the airfiber® core holds the body in alignment.

Back Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight back sleepers will experience this bed as even firmer because the comfort layer offers little to no contouring for those under 130 pounds.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight back sleepers should experience more contouring in the lower back, but this depends on their exact weight. Most should like the firmer feel as it doesn’t allow the hips to sink too deeply.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy back sleepers should like the firmer feel as it keeps the body aligned while also allowing enough sinkage to relieve pressure in the lower back.

Stomach Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight sleepers should like the firm support, although some may still find the bed too firm, depending on their preferences.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight stomach sleepers should get the best balance of pressure relief and support from the softer comfort layer and the airfiber® core.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy stomach sleepers are likely to enjoy sleeping on the Airweave mattress as it offers firm support and just enough sinkage to relieve pressure on the hips, shoulders, and knees.

Pressure Relief & Pain

The Airweave mattress is on the firmer side, so it doesn’t offer too much pressure relief. Lightweight people are unlikely to feel any cushioning because they don’t weigh enough to activate the cushioning layer.

However, average-weight and heavy people should experience more cushioning. The soft polyester layer contours the curves to relieve pressure while the core holds everything in alignment. However, side sleepers need to be careful because they’re prone to pressure buildup and may find this bed too firm.

Back Pain – People with back pain should find this bed comfortable for back sleeping. The firm surface helps keep your body in alignment, especially if you sleep on your back. Some sleepers may experience different levels of pressure relief, which can affect how the bed feels for those who have back pain. For this reason, think about how this bed fits your body weight and sleeping position and how it’ll affect your back pain.

Hip Pain – People with hip pain are likely to prefer a softer bed with more cushioning. Although the Airweave mattress has a softer comfort layer, this is often not enough for those who struggle with hip pain. These people usually need a bit more cushioning, especially if they like sleeping on their side.

Shoulder Pain – Those who struggle with shoulder pain may also want a softer bed with more sinkage to contour the area. The Airweave has a softer layer above the firm core, but this may not be soft enough for side sleepers with shoulder pain as it’s unlikely to cushion the area sufficiently.

Support

This bed excels in support as it has a firm feel and a durable core. The core is designed to offer firm support and some pushback, so sleepers don’t have to worry about repositioning. The mattress doesn’t allow any sinkage, especially if you opt to use it without the optional pillow top. You’ll feel it holding your body in alignment without letting any parts sink in. Back sleepers should experience their weight evenly distributed thanks to the bed’s firm core that offers support in all areas regardless of how much pressure they apply.

Motion Transfer

The buoyant airfiber® tech allows sleepers to reposition without any problems. Considering the amount of bounce in this bed, it admirably contains motion at its source, preventing it from passing through the bed and waking up your sleeping partner. This level of motion isolation makes the bed suitable for couples and co-sleepers sharing their mattress with kids and pets.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

The airfiber® technology helps cool the mattress, so it’s comfortable for hot sleepers. The core has a woven pattern that allows the air to flow through the construction, preventing it from overheating. Although it doesn’t have any specific cooling features, the fact that it’s only 8 inches should help. In other words, although the Airweave is an all-foam bed, it’s unlikely to sleep as hot as most other models.

Performance for Couples

Couples who like a firmer bed should enjoy the Airweave mattress. The bed has excellent support in the center as well as around the edges, giving couples more space to use. In addition, it has plenty of bounce and pushback support for sexually active couples.

Partners with different sleeping habits should also appreciate its ability to isolate motion so that you’re not disturbed by your loved one tossing and turning.

Preference-based Features

Unique construction

This bed has a single layer, which is uncommon for most mattresses we see today. Even with the optional pillow top, the mattress is still thinner than most similar models. Additionally, it has a removable cover, which is also something we don’t see often.

Exceptional Edge Support

Having good edge support increases your sleeping surface area, utilizing the extent of your bed. This may not be something you initially think about when purchasing a mattress, but those who share a bed should take note of this product’s unique ability to support weight on its sides.

Proprietary Materials

This bed comes with airfiber® technology and material that brings all the support, bounce, and durability. This helps sleepers move easily but also enhances airflow to keep the mattress cool. If you’re after a mattress with unique proprietary materials, it’s safe to say this is one of the standout models.

Made in Japan

Construction: What’s Inside the Airweave?

On the outside is a soft polyester cover that can be removed and machine washed with cold water (line dry only). The cover zips open to reveal a padded “fire sock” made from modacrylic and fiberglass. This layer should not significantly affect the bed’s overall feel. There’s an option to choose a pillow top layer if you’d like a bit more cushioning toward the top. This, too, should not affect the firm feel of the mattress core.

  • The first and only layer is made from 7.9 inches of the company’s polyethylene airfiber®. This material is made from interwoven white fibers and has a firm yet airy feel. This open fiber technology makes cleaning this mattress as easy as pouring cold water over the airfiber® to rinse out any accumulated dust or dirt. Most mattresses are comprised of both comfort and support layers. The brand accomplishes this feat in one lightweight layer. The airfiber® distributes pressure evenly throughout, providing both comfort and support while keeping the back straight and the body lying comfortably on the surface.

Unboxing & Off-Gassing

The Airweave is shipped via freight uncompressed, packaged in its full and actual size. It arrives wrapped in plastic and inside a large box.

Although relatively light, this bed should be set up by two people. It’s not manufactured to be used with an adjustable base but should be placed on a solid platform base or platforms with slats that are no more than three inches apart.

Because it’s not compressed, you don’t have to wait before sleeping on it. On top of that, there’s also no off-gassing. If you notice any odors, they’re likely due to the plastic wrapping and should dissipate quickly.

Coupons, Trials, Warranties, and Shipping

  • Shipping – Shipping is free within the United States, but the company doesn’t ship to Hawaii, Alaska, or internationally. Also, King and Cali King mattress sizes take longer to ship and arrive at your address.
  • White Glove Delivery – White glove delivery is available in the US for additional 125 dollars.
  • Trial – You can keep the Airweave mattress for 100 nights, which should be enough for most people to test how the bed fits their needs.
  • Warranty – This bed comes with a 10-year warranty.
  • Return Policy – You can return the mattress within the trial period, but only after you’ve kept it for at least 30 days, which is how long it takes for your body to adapt to the new bed. Once those 30 days pass, you’re eligible for a partial refund. In other words, customers are subject to a return service fee of 200 dollars.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Airweave made from?

Airweave is made from temperature-neutral airfiber®, designed to provide firm support and proper spine alignment in different sleeping positions. The material is unique to this brand and gives a feel we rated as 8.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale.

Overall Summary

Airweave is a unique mattress that gives a firm feel for those who don’t like sinking into their mattress. Proprietary materials and construction make this bed a good option for hot sleepers, stomach sleepers, luxury shoppers, and those after a unique sleeping experience.

Side Sleepers

4/5

Side sleepers should enjoy this bed, but they should carefully consider their body weight. Lightweight side sleepers should find this bed too firm, which can result in pressure buildup. Those weighing at least 130 pounds and up are likely to get a bit of contouring, so pressure buildup isn’t an issue.

Back Sleepers

4/5

This bed offers plenty of support, so it does a good job of keeping the spine aligned. Sleepers are unlikely to sink, so the body stays in a healthy sleeping posture. However, significantly lightweight people might find the bed too firm around the hips and lower back.

Stomach Sleepers

5/5

Stomach sleepers usually steer toward firm mattresses, so the Airweave should be a good match for most of them. Even lightweight people who like sleeping on their stomach should find this bed comfortable, as the firm surface keeps the hips aligned with the rest of the body.

Combination Sleepers

5/5

Airweave should feel good in most sleeping positions, so it should be a good option for combination sleepers. Combo sleepers are likely to experience it differently, depending on their body weight, but the overall feel should be satisfactory. Plus, this bed has a bit of a bounce, so repositioning isn’t an issue.

Couples

5/5

Couples who prefer sleeping on a firm mattress should like how the Airweave bed feels. In addition, this bed has good edge support and motion isolation, both of which are important for couples. The single-layer construction is a bit bouncy, so it should also help sexually active couples, giving a bit of pushback support.

Heavy Sleepers

3/5

Although this bed has a firm feel that should appeal to most sleepers over 230 pounds, it’s not designed to carry the weight. In other words, it may feel comfortable at first, but you’ll quickly notice the bed sagging and compressing in areas with the most pressure. This is likely due to its one-layer construction.

Lightweight Sleepers

3/5

Lightweight sleepers may not weigh enough to get any pressure relief from this bed. Those who sleep on the side may even experience pressure buildup, especially if they choose to sleep without the additional pillow top. Lightweight stomach sleepers may like it because this position doesn’t require too much sinkage.

Average Weight Sleepers

5/5

Average-weight sleepers who like firmer mattresses should enjoy the Airweave bed, and its firm feel. These people may experience the bed differently based on their exact body weight and preferred sleeping position. However, most are likely to enjoy the support, and those closer to 170 pounds should also get some pressure relief.

Overall Value

4/5

Although it’s pricey, this bed is worth it for many people. The design is unique as it has only one layer (potentially two if you choose the pillow top), but it offers outstanding support for those who enjoy firmer beds. Plus, it comes with a 10-year warranty and a 100-night trial.

Our Verdict

This bed is something else, and you won’t find many similar models. Apart from the fact that it has a single-layer construction, it also has a firm feel that most stomach sleepers should enjoy. This bed doesn’t allow too much sinkage, especially for lighter people, but you can add some by opting for the additional pillow top or even a mattress topper.

The drawbacks are few but worth mentioning. First and foremost, the Airweave is on the pricey side, and you don’t get a full refund even if you return the bed within the trial period. Most importantly, although its firmness is great for heavy people, the bed itself cannot handle more than 220 pounds over a long period.
