In a nutshell: The Alexander Signature mattress by Nest Bedding is a flippable mattress with medium and luxury firm sides. We tested the medium side, and it performed well in every category, especially responsiveness. We recommend this mattress to just about everyone, particularly combo sleepers and those prone to back pain.

The Best Aspects
Nest Bedding is an online mattress company based in San Francisco that has been making high-quality sleep products since 2011. Nest Bedding mattresses are known for their comfy feel, affordable pricing, and eco-friendly construction. The Alexander Signature Series foam mattress is their best-seller and one of the best flippable mattresses on Mattress Advisor.
In this review, we’ll take you through the highs and lows of this unique memory foam bed, including our sleep lab scores.
What makes us love it:
- Flippable: We’ve said it a few times already—flip this mattress over and voila! You’ve transformed a firm mattress into one with medium firmness (or vice versa).
- Eco-Friendly: Nest Bedding mattresses are made in the United States with CertiPUR-US certified foams and a non-chemical hydrated silica flame barrier.
- Lifetime Warranty: The Alexander Signature Series is protected against manufacturing defects as long as you’re the original owner.
- Affordable: Nest Bedding mattresses are made in the USA and sold factory-direct, which keeps costs low.
- We voted it one of the best firm mattresses.

⭐Total Score for the Alexander Signature Series: 9.1/10⭐
The Good and the Bad
✅ Pros
- The Alexander Signature Series keeps your spine aligned while you sleep, which helps you to wake with less stiffness and muscle soreness.
- This mattress earned a near-perfect score for responsiveness, meaning that it quickly adjusts to your changes in position.
- The Alexander Signature sleeps remarkably cool for a foam mattress, thanks to phase change materials in the mattress cover.
- You’ll feel well supported along all of the edges of this mattress.
❌ Cons
- We noticed a slight off-gassing scent after we unboxed this mattress.
Motion Transfer
Do you feel your partner move around or get up at night? That’s called motion transfer, and we test it in our sleep lab. The first test, our wine test, is a good visual indicator of how much movement makes it from one end of the mattress to the other.
We placed a glass of wine on the mattress and asked a tester to roll around on the bed. The wine moved only a tiny bit, so we gave the Alexander Signature 9/10 for this test.
Next, we swapped the wine with a person and asked our testers to rate how much movement they could feel from their sleeping partner. They gave the mattress a 8.25/10, which amounts to a high combined score of 8.6/10 for motion transfer.

Responsiveness
The highest score for the Alexander Signature mattress was responsiveness. Our testers tried each sleeping position, and noted how quickly the mattress settled in as they changed position. The mattress adjusted to their changes immediately, which is why it earned a near-perfect score of 9.75/10.
Pressure Relief
We use a pressure mapping film to discover how well a mattress supports different parts of the body. Even distribution of your body weight minimizes pressure on your shoulders and hips.
We noticed high pressure around our first tester’s shoulders, but our second tester showed no high pressure zones, so we gave the Alexander Signature a score of 8.75/10 for pressure relief.

How Firm Is It?
The medium side of the mattress falls at 6/10 on the firmness scale, and the luxury firm side is about 8/10.

Sleeping Position Support
Every sleeping position is supported by the Alexander Signature Series mattress. We think stomach sleepers will like the luxury firm side, side sleepers will prefer the medium side, and back sleepers will fare well on either side.

Cooling Factors
Foam mattresses tend to sleep warm due to less airflow through the foam layers, but the Alexander Signature Series mattress stays quite cool. We attribute its cool feel mainly to the temperature-regulating materials in the mattress cover.

Body Type Support
This mattress can support up to 600lbs combined. Foam mattresses best support those with lightweight to average body types.
Foundation Compatibility
Nest Bedding recommends using a flat, firm foundation, such as a platform bed, adjustable base, or slatted bed with no more than 4” between the slats. Box springs are not recommended.

Mattress Build
The Alexander Signature Series mattress is made entirely of layers of foam. Take a look at the construction below.

- Quilted Cover: A soft, organic cotton cover with a 1” layer of CoolFlow foam
- Top Layer (medium side): 2″ of pressure-relieving gel memory foam
- Transition Layer: 2″ of transitional foam
- Bottom Layer (luxury firm side): 7″ of supportive base foam
- Quilted Cover: Another layer of CoolFlow foam and organic cotton fabric

Shipping, Delivery, and Mattress Removal
The Alexander Signature Series ships for free in the lower 48 states (extra shipping costs apply for deliveries to Alaska or Hawaii). Nest Bedding mattresses are delivered in 4–8 business days. You can track your order after it’s shipped, but you don’t need to be home for delivery.
If you think you’ll need help with mattress setup, a Nest Bedding rep can give you a white glove delivery quote. Old mattress removal costs $100.
Nest’s Sleep Trial
You can take up to 100 days to test out your new bed, which is about average for the mattress industry. This is a good time to assess pressure point relief, motion isolation, and overall comfort.
Breaking Down the Warranty
Your Nest Bedding mattress is covered under warranty for your entire ownership, as long as you’re the original owner and bought your mattress directly from Nest Bedding or an authorized dealer. If you notice any manufacturing flaws in the zipper or cover fabric, or indentations deeper than 1”, you may be able to receive a replacement mattress or repairs to the damaged element.
To make a claim email customerservice@nestbedding.com, and Nest Bedding will respond with instructions within 7 business days of receiving your email.
How to Reach Customer Service
We’ve had positive, professional experiences with the Nest Bedding team. You’ll need to have a Facebook Messenger account to chat with a customer service rep live during working hours.
Otherwise, you can call 888–992–2001 Monday-Friday from 8AM–7PM PST or Saturday-Sunday from 7AM–6PM PST. You can also email customerservice@nestbedding.com, and Nest Bedding reps will respond Monday-Friday, 7AM–5PM PST or Saturday-Sunday, 8AM–7PM PST.
Their Return Policy
Fret not—if the Alexander Signature Series isn’t the best mattress for you, Nest Bedding has a generous return and exchange policy. You’ll need to sleep on your new mattress for at least 30 days before initiating a return or exchange, but after that you may return it at any point within the 100 day trial.
To request a return, a different mattress, or different firmness level, fill out the form on the website returns page, visit the store you purchased from, or email customerservice@nestbedding.com. Your Nest Bedding rep will try to help you resolve your sleep issues, but if it’s just not a good fit, they’ll help you arrange a donation or disposal pick up and then issue your full refund.
Is It the Right Bed for You?
We’re big fans of the Alexander Signature Series mattress. It performed well in all categories, including cooling, which is significant for an all-foam bed. Plus, if you aren’t sure whether you want a medium or firm mattress, you can try both with one purchase.
For a lower cost mattress that also offers multiple firmness options, check out our Dreamfoam Copper mattress review.
Mattress Comparisons
The Nest Bedding Alexander Signature Series mattress rises to the top of the competition thanks to high performance and functionality scores. There are a few other flippable mattresses on the market that stand out.
The Idle Sleep Latex mattress has a medium firm and luxury firm side. It’s made with latex and pocket coils—rather than foam—and is slightly more expensive than the Alexander Signature Series (prices ranging $1,212–$2,427). It also has a lifetime warranty, plus an 18 month (540 day) trial period! Similar to the Alexander Signature Series, the Idle Sleep is great for combo sleepers, hot sleepers, and those with back pain.
The Layla mattress and Plank mattress are both lower cost, all-foam options with 120 night sleep trials. The Plank has a 10 year warranty, while the Layla has a lifetime warranty. The Layla has a medium-soft and firm side that accommodate all sleeping positions. The Plank is better for back sleepers and stomach sleepers, since it has firm and ultra firm sides.
The Nest Sparrow Signature Hybrid is also worth noting. It’s not flippable but it’s made with similar materials and comes in three firmness options (plush, medium, and luxury firm). As a Nest Bedding mattress, it has a 365-night sleep trial and lifetime warranty, but it costs $150–$200 less than the Alexander Signature Series.

- Easy Breather Pillow: A plush pillow with an adjustable fill level. $119/queen size
- Alexander Signature Cooling Topper: 2” of Energex foam wrapped in a cooling cover. $249/queen size
- The HomeBase Foundation: Offered in a 5.5” low profile or 8” high profile, and includes a USB Power Kit. $399/queen size
- Love & Sleep Mattress: An all-foam mattress that’s easy on your body and your budget. $699/queen size
How do I protect my Nest Alexander Signature Series mattress?
Using a waterproof mattress protector will keep fluids (and mold), dead skin cells, and dust mites away from your mattress. If you’re moving, zip your mattress into a mattress bag. All-foam mattresses like the Alexander Signature Series can be folded and stored vertically in your moving truck.
Can I return my mattress before the 30th day of the sleep trial?
You can only return unboxed mattresses before the 30th day of the sleep trial, but your refund will have a 25% restocking fee deduction.
What is a comfort layer exchange?
Certain Nest Bedding mattresses have a zippered top that allows you to swap out the comfort layer. This prevents the whole mattress from being discarded if you want a different firmness level or a fresh top layer. Email customerservice@nestbedding.com to exchange your comfort layer or order a new one. Wait to receive your new comfort layer before donating the old one.
How many times can I exchange my mattress during the trial period?
Each customer is allowed one comfort exchange per year.
Where can I try a Nest Bedding mattress in person?
Nest Bedding has showrooms in Texas, California, New York, Illinois, Colorado, and Washington state.
What is the Lifetime Comfort Guarantee?
After buying a new bed from Nest Bedding, you can also redeem their Lifetime Comfort Guarantee, which enables you to buy another Nest Bedding mattress for 30% off. The Comfort Guarantee can only be used once, and you can’t have returned or exchanged your original mattress.
