Our Amerisleep Organica Mattress Review for 2024

Amerisleep is best known for making high-quality foam and hybrid mattresses in a variety of firmness levels. More recently, though, they’ve released an organic hybrid mattress called the Organica, competing with other organic mattresses out there like Avocado Green and Saatva’s Loom & Leaf.

This bed is made from both latex and innerspring coils, making it cool, bouncy, and on the firmer side. It also means that the Organica will be an excellent fit for some sleepers– and not such a great fit for others. In this in-depth Amerisleep Organica review, we’ll go over all the details of this bed and ultimately answer the question: Is it the right one for you?

Who We Recommend The Amerisleep Organica For:

  • Combination sleepers – The Organica is made with natural latex and innerspring coils, so it’s very buoyant. This bouncy feel makes this bed an excellent choice for those who change positions throughout the night and don’t want to feel ‘stuck’ in their mattress.

  • Organic mattress shoppers – Amerisleep’s Organica is their most eco-friendly bed yet. It includes materials like organic wool and natural Talalay latex. Not to mention, each Organica purchased helps support sustainable farming.

  • Hot sleepers – Talalay latex is a naturally temperature-neutral material already. Combine that with a layer of innerspring coils and what you get is a breathable bed that won’t trap heat.

Who We Don’t Recommend The Amerisleep Organica For:

  • Side sleepersSide sleepers need a mattress that is soft and contouring the shoulder and hip. This bed will likely feel too firm for most side sleepers.

  • Budget shoppers – Considering the quality of organic materials used in this bed, it is going to be on the pricier side of things and won’t suit budget mattress shoppers.

  • Sensitive sleepers sharing a bed – This bed includes both natural latex and innerspring coils– two materials that are quite bouncy. This makes it great for combination sleepers but not ideal for light sleepers, who will be more easily disturbed by their partner’s movements at night.

First Impressions: Firmness & Feel

Firmness Scale: 7/10 (Luxury Firm)

Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.

Firmness describes how soft or firm the mattress will feel when you lie down on it, rather than how straight it keeps your spine, which is how supportive the bed is.

According to our Sleep Advisor firmness scale, in which a 1 rating is the softest feel possible and 10 is the firmest, the Organica falls at about a 7 out of 10. For context, the most common type of mattress, a medium-firm, falls between a 5 and 6.5, so the Organica is slightly firmer than most mattresses. This makes it a great mattress for those who prefer firmer support.

How Does It Feel?

Like all Amerisleep mattresses, the Organica is a bed-in-a-box, which means it will be compressed and delivered to your home in a box. When you lie on this bed, you’ll likely first notice the soft, organic cotton cover. The mattress itself will feel distinctly taut and bouncy because of the latex. You will definitely feel more ‘on top of’ this bed rather than ‘hugged’ by it.

What We Like About the Organica

  • The wool top layer – The Organica may feel firm and bouncy overall, but the top layer of organic wool gives it an almost pillow top-like feel. This will provide some pressure relief.
  • It’ll keep you cool – Unlike some beds that employ cooling gels and technology, this bed is naturally cool because of its materials. Latex, breathable fabrics like cotton, and pocketed coils make this mattress a hot sleeper’s dream.
  • The eco-friendly materials – It says it right in the name: Organica. This bed is the most eco-friendly, organic option from Amerisleep and has the certifications to prove it.

Our Organica Complaints

  • It doesn’t work for all sleep positions – As a firm mattress, this bed should work best for back and stomach sleepers. Unfortunately, side sleepers will likely find this bed too firm.
  • It contains less latex than some – Compared to other latex beds, this one has less latex in it.
  • No lifetime warranty – Some beds at this price point come with a lifetime warranty, but this one comes with a 20-year warranty. This is a small complaint, though, because 20 years should still cover the lifetime of this bed.

Testing the Organica Mattress: How it Performed

In order to test the Amerisleep Organica, and ultimately find out who it is the best fit for, we put it through multiple tests. We looked at things like pressure and pain relief, support, motion transfer, temperature regulation, and how it performed for couples. We also lied on the bed in different positions to see how it would perform for different sleepers and body types.

Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types

According to Amerisleep, the Organica is able to support up to 600 pounds or 300 pounds per side of the bed. That being said, it will be important to take your weight as well as your go-to sleep position into account when shopping for a mattress.

Side Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight sleepers who alternate between side sleeping and another position will likely do best on this mattress. They’ll rest more on top of the mattress’s wool layer, rather than sinking down to the firmer layers beneath, and if they’re not strictly on their side all the time, pressure buildup shouldn’t be as much of an issue.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – Average-weight side sleepers will sink into this bed’s wool layer and push into the firmer layers beneath. This will make the bed feel too firm.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Plus-size side sleepers should opt for a bed specifically for heavyweight sleepers. On this one, they’ll press down into the pocketed coils, which will feel uncomfortable.

Back Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight back sleepers should feel well supported on the Organica.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – Average-weight back sleepers will get a lot out of this bed, as they’ll sink in just the right amount to feel both pressure relief and support.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight back sleepers will likely feel this bed as more of a ‘medium-firm’ than other sleepers. In this position, they’ll sink enough to still feel supported but not so much that they’ll bottom out on the support layers.

Stomach Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – The Organica is ideal for lightweight stomach sleepers. The top wool layer will provide some pressure relief, but the firmer layers beneath will keep the hips from dipping down to prevent back pain.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – Average-weight stomach sleepers will likely sink too far down into this bed in the hip area. This means the spine will be put out of alignment, so they may need something firmer.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – We feel that heavyweight stomach sleepers will need a firmer and more supportive mattress. On the Organica, their hips will dip down into the bed, causing a curve in the spine, which can lead to back pain.

Pressure Relief & Pain

Pressure relief means that the mattress is able to alleviate uncomfortable pressure buildup in sensitive areas like the back, hips, and shoulders. The Amerisleep Organic is a latex bed that is more springy and taut, rather than especially pressure-relieving.

However, the top wool layer does provide some pressure relief, though it may not be as much as some softer latex models or memory foam beds.

Back Pain – This bed is a good fit for sleepers with back pain, particularly those who sleep on their backs as well as petite stomach sleepers. The Organica should evenly distribute your weight and keep your spine in a neutral alignment in this position.
Hip Pain – Sleepers with hip pain will likely find this mattress to be a bit too firm. On the side, it will likely increase pressure on the hip rather than relieve it for most.
Shoulder Pain – This mattress will also probably feel too firm for most sleepers with shoulder pain, no matter the sleep position.

Support

Different from firmness, support is a measurement of how well a mattress keeps your spine in neutral alignment, which is important because it can help prevent back pain from emerging or worsening.

This firm mattress does a good job of this for most sleepers, since it has both pocketed coils (which are very supportive) as well as latex. This bed will be especially supportive for back sleepers of all weights, as well as lightweight stomach sleepers. In these positions and for these body types, the spine will remain in comfortable, neutral alignment throughout the night.

Motion Transfer

Julia Forbes testing motion transfer on a mattress
Julia Forbes, our lead product tester, testing motion isolation of a mattress.

Motion transfer measures how much you will be able to feel somebody moving on another part of the bed. For light sleepers who share a bed, finding a mattress with great motion isolation will be especially important to get a good night’s sleep.

Unfortunately, the Organica is not that mattress. While some people will love the high bounce in this bed (some sexually-active couples and combination sleepers, for example), those who need a bed that won’t budge when their partner moves will likely want to look for something with memory foam rather than latex and coils.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

The Amerisleep Organica is an excellent mattress for hot sleepers because the materials in this bed are naturally cooling. Talalay latex does not retain heat like memory foam does. Instead, it should feel breathable and light. The wool used in this mattress is naturally thermoregulating, which means it should keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

Beneath all that, the pocketed coils allow air to pass through the entire mattress, keeping it breathable. Even the cover will feel cool to the touch, as it’s made from organic cotton.

Performance for Couples

Generally, the best mattress for couples is going to have a few distinct qualities: great motion isolation, excellent edge support, and cooling features.

The Organica hits two out of three of these: it has good edge support, so the entire surface of the bed is more usable for extra room. As we’ve discussed, it is also a naturally cooling mattress, so couples shouldn’t have to worry about overheating at night. Unfortunately, as it is such a bouncy bed, it won’t have the best motion isolation.

Preference-based Features

Bed-in-a-box

This bed will be delivered to your doorstep and compressed into a box. This can be more convenient since you can set it up on your own time.

High Bounce

People who change positions a lot or struggle with mobility typically prefer beds with a bit of pushback support or bounce that assists movement. Many sexually-active couples also prefer this feature.

Eco-Conscious Materials

The materials in this mattress have all met rigorous certification standards. The Organica is built with organic, non-toxic materials. Plus, when you purchase this bed you’ll be supporting sustainable farming and local manufacturing.

Adjustable Base Compatible

According to Amerisleep, the Organica is compatible with almost all foundations, including adjustable bases.

Construction: What’s Inside the Organica?

Once the Amerisleep Organica fully decompresses, it will measure 13 inches tall. The mattress itself is made up of three layers: a top comfort layer, a transition layer, and the bottom support layer. Encasing the entire mattress is a soft and breathable organic cotton cover, which should provide a cooling sleep space right at the surface.

  • Beneath the cover is the top comfort layer. This unit is made from New Zealand Joma wool – a wool that feels both springy and soft and is naturally moisture-wicking. This layer will provide some pressure relief and has some interesting thermoregulating properties, which means that in the summer it will help keep you cool and in the winter, it should keep you warm. This wool also acts as a natural flame retardant and is chemical-free.
  • The middle serves as the transition layer. It is made from natural Talalay latex, which is a bouncier and slightly softer material than Dunlop latex. This layer will, again, feel cool since latex naturally does not trap heat, and it will feel somewhat taut and distinctly springy.
  • The final layer is the support base. This piece is made up of 8-inch high pocketed coils, which also gives this bed a good foundation. The coils also allow air to pass through the mattress, making the whole product even more breathable.

Unboxing & Off-Gassing

Like all bed-in-a-box mattresses, this one will take some time to fully decompress and reach its full height of 13 inches. This should take about 24 to 48 hours, max. When unboxing and unwrapping the bed, keep in mind this is a heavy mattress. A Queen, for example, will weigh 125 pounds, so you might want to unbox the bed with a friend.

Since this bed is made with natural materials, it won’t have the same initial off-gassing period as other bed-in-a-box mattresses that include chemicals in their foams. That means no unpleasant smells and no need to keep it in a well-ventilated room.

Certifications

  • Eco-Friendly Certifications – This product was certified by OEKO-TEX®, which evaluates textiles at all processing levels for acceptable levels of hazardous chemicals and flame retardants. It is also eco-INSTITUT® certified. This certification is completed by a lab in Germany with 30 years of experience in the mattress industry and signifies that the company has gone above and beyond to ensure levels of hazardous chemicals are well-below safety regulation requirements.
  • Certified Natural and Organic Materials – Cotton in the cover is GOTS-certified, which means the cotton meets the international third-party standard to be certified organic. The mattress’ second layer and tufting yarn are made from GOTS-certified wool. The latex is certified by OEKO-TEX®, Rainforest Alliance, and eco-INSTITUT.

Overall Summary

Amerisleep Organica is a hybrid bed, built with natural Talalay latex, wool, organic cotton, and coils. It’s an excellent firm mattress for eco-conscious shoppers.

Side Sleepers

3/5

Side sleepers need a bed that is on the softer side to provide pressure relief on the hip and shoulder. The Organica will likely be too firm for most side sleepers. That said, some lighter-weight side sleepers might rest so lightly on the mattress’s layers that it will feel comfortable.

Back Sleepers

5/5

The combination of supportive innerspring coils, bouncy natural latex, and a layer of soft, contouring wool makes this an excellent bed for back sleepers. These materials will keep the spine in comfortable, neutral alignment, which will ultimately ease back pain.

Stomach Sleepers

3/5

Stomach sleepers need a firm mattress in order to make sure their hips don’t dip down into the bed, which will create back pain. The Organica is certainly firm enough to support lightweight stomach sleepers, though average and heavier stomach sleepers will need something more supportive.

Combination Sleepers

3/5

Combination sleepers need to be able to comfortably move from position to position throughout the night. The Organica’s materials make it taut and bouncy, so changing positions is easier. However, it scored slightly lower because the number of comfortable positions is limited. We think only lightweight combination sleepers would do well on this bed.

Couples

3/5

This bed will work well for certain couples, such as sexually-active couples who want some bounce in their mattress, couples who don’t want to overheat at night, and those who want strong edges for spreading out. The major downside is that this bed doesn’t have great motion isolation.

Heavy Sleepers

3/5

This bed can support up to 300 pounds per side, so if you are significantly heavier, you’ll need a more supportive mattress. For those 300 pounds or less, the Organica should feel comfortable and supportive for back-sleeping. For stomach or side sleeping, the Organica won’t be quite supportive enough for heavy sleepers.

Lightweight Sleepers

5/5

The Organica should work well for those under 130 pounds who prefer a firm-feeling mattress. Light sleepers won’t sink into the wool top layer as much as heavier folks, so they might even be able to comfortably sleep on their sides on this bed. They should definitely feel comfortable and supported on their stomachs or backs.

Average Weight Sleepers

4/5

Average-weight sleepers should feel especially comfortable on the Organica while sleeping on their backs. Average-weight side sleepers will likely find the bed too firm on their hip and shoulder, and average-weight stomach sleepers might not find it supportive enough beneath the hips.

Overall Value

5/5

Amerisleep’s Organica is the company’s most eco-friendly and sustainably-built bed yet. It comes with an excellent 20-year warranty and environmentally-friendly materials, and with each purchase, you’re also supporting sustainable farming and local manufacturing. With all of this in mind, it is an excellent overall value.

Our Verdict

Amerisleep is already an environmentally-conscious company, but the Organica is their most eco-friendly model yet. This firm bed is built with pocketed coils for bounce and support, natural Talalay latex, GOTS-certified wool, and GOLS-certified cotton. It should feel as good on your body as it does for the environment.

The Organica should work particularly well for lightweight sleepers and those who primarily sleep on their backs. It’s also going to be an excellent choice for those who sleep hot.

However, sleepers who prefer a softer bed or are sensitive to their partner’s movements at night might do better with one of Amerisleep’s memory foam hybrids instead.
