Who Is It Right For?
|Avocado Green is best for:||Avocado Green may not be best for:|
The Avocado Green mattress is one of the best organic mattresses available online. This organic latex mattress is naturally cool and customers love the eco-friendly materials. In this mattress review, we’ll go over what you need to know about the Avocado Green mattress before you buy, including pros and cons, how it scored in our lab testing, product specs, and more.
Why we love it:
- While the Avocado Green bed is on the pricier side, you are investing in all-natural materials and a latex/hybrid mattress – some of the best hybrid mattresses are known to have great durability and some of the longest lifespans.
- Because of the inner coil system and latex top support, this mattress is going to provide great responsiveness; however, it is not going to be as contouring as some of the best memory foam mattresses will. You do have the choice of adding on a European-style optional pillow-top for added “fluff.” (It’s an extra $400 to add this to a queen size mattress.)
- Nearly all of the materials in the mattress can be recycled.
- The Avocado Green is one of our top-rated best organic mattresses.
- It’s one of the best durable mattresses that won’t sag.

Here’s how the Avocado Green mattress scored on different tests and evaluations. Our score is a weighted average out of 10 that incorporates functional and performance characteristics of the mattress, as well as a social responsibility score, which takes into account social mission, community involvement, and charitable partnerships.

Avocado Green Performance Highlights
- Trial Period: Avocado offers one of the most generous trial period and warranty combinations: a year-long trial and a 25-year warranty. They are clearly confident in the premium organic materials.
- Spine Alignment: People who suffer from back pain need a mattress that provides good spinal alignment that keeps it from twisting unnaturally. Avocado Green scored a nearly perfect 9.5 out of 10 in our spine alignment test.
- Responsiveness: People who move around at night should look for a responsive mattress as it will adjust to these movements quickly. The Avocado Green mattress did well in this area thanks to the coil layer.
- Cooling: The Avocado Green is made of cooling latex foam and breathable innersprings, making it a good mattress for hot sleepers.
- Delivery Time: Every Avocado mattress is made to order, so don’t expect a speedy delivery. It can take up to 3 weeks from the time you place your order to the time it shows up on your doorstep.
- Motion Transfer: The Avocado Green mattress didn’t score the best in motion isolation, meaning it may not be the best pick for people who sleep with a partner.
- Pressure Relief: In our pressure relief test, Avocado Green was harsh on the pressure point areas of side sleepers.
In order for a mattress to score highly on our spine alignment test, it must support the natural curve of your spine. When this curve is thrown out of alignment it can result in morning aches and prolonged lower back pain.
Both of our mattress testers had near-perfect alignment when they were on their sides and their stomachs, earning the Avocado Green an impressive 9.5/10.
Certain sleepers are sensitive to disruptions that might otherwise seem minor to others. Some people need complete darkness to sleep well; others require white noise; and many cannot rest easy with a fidgety partner or pet beside them. This last problem is quite common in sleepers, including myself, and the best solution for it is to find a bed that absorbs motion rather than reverberating it.
Unfortunately, the Avocado Green did not succeed in this test. We found that motion was very easy to detect on the mattress’s surface, meaning even your sleep partner’s smallest movements could wake you from a deep slumber.
Whether you’re watching a movie or trying to get to sleep, you probably try several different positions before you settle into comfort. This is especially the case for combination sleepers, who move around consistently throughout the night. In order to allow for this, a bed must have a high level of responsiveness, meaning it is easy to move around on but also easy to settle into.
Unlike most memory foam mattresses, latex and innerspring beds tend to perform well on the responsiveness test, and the Avocado Green is no exception. If you’re somewhat of a restless sleeper this mattress is a solid choice.
The Avocado Green lands on a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale, classifying it as a firm mattress. This is ideal for back and stomach sleepers. With the added pillow top, the firmness level becomes a 6 out of 10 or medium-firm.
Does the Avocado Green Work for Your Sleeping Position?
The Avocado Green will work better for some sleep positions than others. Here’s how the mattress’s comfort and support breaks down for each position:
The Avocado Green is a bit of a mixed bag here because it’s on the firmer side and isn’t the best at relieving pressure on most side sleepers’ hips and shoulders. However, it bears mentioning that we did find that it provided near-perfect spine alignment for our testers when they rested on their sides.
Heavier side sleepers might find it to have sufficient give for comfortable side sleeping, but lightweight and average weight side sleepers will likely find it to be too firm. If you want more cushion for side sleeping, you can add the pillow-top option—in our testing, we found that this brings the mattress’s firmness level down from a 7/10 to a 6/10. But we also recommend you check out one of the beds on our best mattress for side sleepers list.
Most back sleepers will find that this mattress provides ideal support and firmness for their sleep position. Beneath the Avocado Green’s first layer of Dunlop latex, it has a layer of pocketed support coils that supplies zoned lumbar support. In part due to the effectiveness of this layer, the mattress earned a 9.5/10 score for spine alignment in our testing, suggesting that it supports the natural curve of your back and won’t exacerbate back pain issues overnight.
Most stomach sleepers will also find the Avocado Green to be ideal. Its firmness level and zoned support help keep hips elevated, so a stomach sleeper’s spine stays in neutral alignment. When we observed our testers resting on the Avocado Green on their stomachs, both appeared to be in near-perfect alignment.
Due to the Avocado Green’s firmness, spine alignment, and above-average responsiveness—which makes it easy to flip between positions throughout the night—the mattress is a good choice for all types of combination sleepers. Whether you cycle between lying on your side and back, back and stomach, side and stomach, or all three positions, you should be able to get a good night of rest on this bed.
Is the Avocado Green Good for Pain Relief?
The Avocado Green provides excellent spine alignment, which can help alleviate back pain because it holds your spine in a neutral position overnight. Its zoned support system also makes it a good choice for those suffering from back pain—you’ll get firmness where you need it most and a more cushiony feel where you need more relief.
If you’re a side sleeper suffering from hip pain, the Avocado Green probably shouldn’t be your first choice for a new mattress. Although the mattress provides top-notch spine alignment, it supplies below-average pressure relief and might cause you to experience too much tension buildup in your hips.
Sleepers in all other positions with hip pain should do fine, however—the mattress has zoned lumbar support in its coil layer and the option to add a pillow top for even more cushion and comfort.
Like hip pain, shoulder pain is primarily an issue for side sleepers because the position puts a lot of pressure on one’s shoulder and hips. So while back, stomach, and combination sleepers should get plenty of support and comfort through the shoulders on the Avocado Green, side sleepers might experience pressure buildup due to the mattress’s firmness and below-average pressure relief. Our testers experience pressure in the shoulder area when resting on their sides; this could lead to ongoing pain over time.
The Avocado Green mattress consists of both latex foam and coil springs, two of the most breathable and naturally cool materials a mattress can be made with.
A queen Avocado Green mattress supports 350 lbs on each side or 700 lbs total. This weight limit will support most types of sleepers.
A foundation is not required with Avocado Green, but if you choose to use one, a platform bed, an adjustable base, or slatted foundation will work fine. Avocado does not recommend using a traditional box spring as it can make the mattress feel too springy.

Is Avocado Green Right for You?
If you’re interested in an eco-friendly mattress and don’t mind spending a bit then there’s a lot to love about the Avocado Green. It’s great for back pain and does a good job of staying cool throughout the night. Couples, however, may find that the motion isolation is somewhat lacking. If you’re sensitive to movement but still have your heart set on a latex bed, check out our Awara mattress review. Avocado also sells the Eco Organic mattress, which is a hybrid option for those that prefer a coil system and memory foam.
Another thing to keep in mind is the cost. It is true that finding a decent latex mattress for a wallet-friendly price is challenging, but it isn’t impossible. For an option that comes in under $1000, read our review of the Elements Latex mattress.
Avocado vs. Saatva
|Mattress Advisor Score||8.5/10||9/10|
|Firmness||Medium-Firm to Firm: 7/10 (6/10 with European pillow-top option)||Multiple options|
|Who’s It Best For?||
If you are looking for a premium luxury mattress experience, the Avocado and Saatva mattresses will provide you with it.
With the ability to choose your firmness, either mattress can provide you with the type of sleep experience you enjoy; however, we found that the Saatva caters better to those with back pain and those who sleep hot due to its top spinal alignment and cooling performance scores.
Have a favorite sleeping position? The Avocado mattress is best for back and stomach sleepers, while the Saatva can accommodate back, stomach, and side sleepers.
If motion isolation is a factor in your decision-making process or if you share a bed with your partner, the Saatva scores higher in this area.

Avocado vs. Purple
|Mattress Advisor Score||8.5/10||8.4/10|
|Firmness||Medium-Firm to Firm: 7/10 (6/10 with European pillow-top option)||Medium-Firm: 6.5/10|

|Who’s It Best For?||
The Avocado and Purple mattresses score similarly in two key areas: cooling and spine alignment. If you’re a hot sleeper, or a sleeper with back pain, either the Avocado or Purple mattress is an excellent choice for you.
These mattresses are created using very different materials. The Avocado is a natural latex mattress with an innerspring support system, while the Purple is a hybrid mattress made of squishy polymer and foam. If you’re looking for a more traditional mattress feel, the Avocado may be the mattress to consider bringing home.
At the end of the day, your purchasing decision could come down to your preferred sleeping position. While the Avocado caters to stomach and back sleepers, the Purple is better for back and side sleepers because of its pressure-relieving properties.
