Big Fig Mattress Review Highlights

The Big Fig mattress was created in 2016 by a 5th generation father-daughter mattress making team. They realized that mattresses are just like almost everything else in life—one size does not fit all—and decided to build a mattress for heavier folks.
If you’re looking for a mattress made to meet your specific needs, the Big Fig could be for you. Keep on reading for our in-depth Big Fig mattress review, including pros and cons, construction, and performance scores.
The best parts:
- High Quality Materials: The Big Fig is one of the best mattresses for heavy people. The high-density foam layers and pocketed coils can support up to 1,100 lbs for couples or up to 500 lbs for a single sleeper.
- Cooling Technology: Big Fig’s quilted mattress topper is treated with a substance called ThermoGel that responds to sweat (or any form of moisture) by instantly cooling the mattress surface. It’s pretty high-tech stuff.
- 20-Year Warranty: The team at Big Fig used third-party testers to simulate 20 years of use on their mattress. The Big Fig showed essentially no wear, which is why they back it with a 20-year warranty.
- Top Rated: It’s one of the top-rated best hybrid mattresses we’ve tested!

⭐Total Score for the Big Fig Mattress: 9.1/10⭐
Best/ Worst Factors
✅ Pros
- Motion Transfer: Big Fig earned a near-perfect score during our motion transfer test, meaning it’s great for light sleepers who share the bed.
- Edge Support: Our plus-sized testers felt well supported while sitting or lying near the edge of the bed.
- Responsiveness: We noticed virtually no delay in the mattress’s response time when we changed positions on the Big Fig.
- Cooling: The Big Fig is one of the most cooling mattresses for heavier body types that we’ve tested.
- Durability: The Big Fig keeps a “new bed” feel for up to two decades, thanks to its extra durable materials.
❌ Cons
- Heavy: The Big Fig mattress is pretty heavy, so you’ll want to ask a friend to help you set them up or pay an extra fee to get Big Fig to set it up for you.
- Off-gassing: When unboxing the Big Fig we noticed a slight off-gassing smell which is typical of most bed-in-box companies and usually goes away after a few hours.
Motion Transfer
Pay attention to the motion transfer category if you anticipate sleeping with a partner, pet, or child. To test motion transfer, we asked two plus-size adults to rate how well the Big Fig mattress isolated movement from the other person on the bed.
According to our testers, the Big Fig kept motion transfer to a minimum. They gave it a 9.5/10, so it’s a reliable choice for couples looking to sleep soundly together through the night.
Edge Support
Our review team was blown away when it came time to test the edge of the Big Fig mattress. When laying on the edge, they felt like they were still laying in the middle of the bed. This excellent edge support is likely credited to Big Fig’s reinforced edges and high-density edge foam, which provides extra strength.
Pressure Relief
Pressure relief is super important for side sleepers and anyone with joint or back pain. The Big Fig did a decent job of evenly distributing our testers’ body weight, but we did notice some high pressure around our heavier tester’s hips, so we gave it a score of 7.75/10. Both our light and heavier tester had a blue pressure map when they lay on their back, making it a great pressure-relieving mattress for back sleepers.

Responsiveness
The Big Fig does an exceptional job of responding to movement. We asked our testers to repeatedly change position on top of the mattress and rate how well the mattress adjusted. They gave it an outstanding 10/10, so it’s perfect for combo sleepers.
How Does the Mattress Feel?
The Big Fig has a medium-firm feel, which is about 6–7/10 on the firmness scale. This firmness level is ideal for those with bigger figures because it’s both supportive and cushioning. When we laid on the mattress we feel elevated well.

Compatible Sleeping Positions
Based on our test results, we think the Big Fig is a good fit as a top mattress for back sleepers and mattress for stomach sleepers, but side sleepers may want to add a mattress topper to enhance pressure relief. Or head over to our top rated mattresses for side sleepers list to find other good options.
Combination sleepers can easily move across the mattress’s surface without feeling stuck.

Cooling Factors
The Big Fig has effective cooling technology in just about every layer, which is why we gave it a 9/10 for cooling. The cover fabric is treated with a material that cools when in contact with sweat. The top latex layer is infused with gel and perforated for extra airflow. Finally, the pocketed coils pump warm air out of the mattress every time you move.

What Is the Weight Limit?
People with larger body types generally need a hefty, firm mattress since their weight compresses mattress materials, causing the bed to feel softer. The Big Fig is capable of supporting up to 1,100 lbs from two sleepers (on a queen, king, or Cal king size), and up to 550 lbs from one sleeper on any mattress size.
What Foundations Should You Use?
Big Fig recommends housing your mattress on its 7-inch foundation, but it will work just fine on any bed frame, box spring, or adjustable bed that can support at least 1,310 pounds (the weight of the Big Fig sleep system plus two sleepers). Make sure your foundation has a solid center support if you order anything bigger than a full size.

Inner Layers
We took a look inside the Big Fig mattress and found layer after layer of strong, supportive materials.

- Mattress Cover: The stretchy fabric cover is infused with cooling ThermoGel and is tufted to prevent materials from shifting over time. It’s also lined with a thin layer of polyurethane foam.
- Gel-Infused Latex Foam: The latex top layer is perforated for comfort and airflow.
- Comfort Layers: Beneath the latex foam is three layers of high-density polyfoam that are designed to resist sagging.
- 1,600 Individually Wrapped Coils: The Big Fig uses 50% more coils than the average premium innerspring mattress on the market.
- High Density Edge Foam: Foam around the perimeter of the mattress adds strength and solid edge support.
- Big Fig Foundation: The Big Fig foundation (sold separately) is made with 18 slats of 2.5’’ wood that support five times the weight of an average foundation.

Delivery and Unboxing
Although the mattress was a bit heavy, it was manageable to handle with two people. Big Fig does offer white glove delivery for an additional fee of $199 and old mattress removal for an extra $50. It took us just under two minutes to completely unbox the mattress and it puffed up pretty fast. When we opened the box, we noticed a faint off-gassing smell which is typical for mattresses that are compressed for delivery.

Should You Buy the Big Fig?
The short answer to this question is yes—if you’re plus-sized or have a heavier body type. The Big Fig can sleep comfortably for those with average body types, but it will likely feel a bit firmer than intended.
If you’re lightweight or petite, the Big Fig will probably feel too firm. Instead, consider the plush version of the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora mattress.
Big Fig Mattress Comparisons
We consider the Big Fig to be one of the best mattresses for heavy sleepers because of its high performance scores, durable construction, and relatively affordable price. Here are a few close comparisons:
Big Fig vs. Titan
Criteria | Big Fig | Titan |
Mattress Advisor Score | 9.1/10 | 9.2/10 |
Firmness | Medium-Firm: 6-7/10 | Firm: 8/10 |
Material | Hybrid | Hybrid |
Who’s It Best For? |
|
|
The Big Fig and the Brooklyn Bedding Titan were both designed with heavier sleepers in mind. Both of these mattresses have a hybrid construction, meaning they have a coil support system and foam comfort layer. While hybrid mattresses tend to be good for hot sleepers, we found that the Big Fig slept slightly cooler than the Titan. Additionally, the construction of the Big Fig provided superior edge support, so you don’t have to worry about the edge of the bed collapsing.
Between the two mattresses, the Big Fig is softer, which makes it a better option for those looking for pressure relief. The Titan performed better in our motion transfer test, making it a better option for couples who do not want to worry about disturbing the other throughout the night with movement.
If you’re looking to save a bit of money, the Titan is a few hundred dollars cheaper than the Big Fig. However, that trade off comes with a slightly lower performance in our durability test.

Big Fig vs. Helix Plus
Criteria | Big Fig | Helix Plus |
Mattress Advisor Score | 9.1/10 | 8/10 |
Firmness | Medium-Firm: 6-7/10 | Firm: 7-8/10 |
Material | Hybrid | Hybrid |
Who’s It Best For? |
|
|
The Big Fig and Helix Plus are both great mattresses for heavier sleepers; however, the Big Fig was our overall top mattress between the two. The Big Fig outperformed the Helix Plus in most categories, including cooling, motion transfer, edge support, and responsiveness. Its top scores in motion transfer means couples are less likely to feel each other moving around in the middle of the night, and its high marks for responsiveness means it’s a great option for combination sleepers.
While the Big Fig was a strong performer, the Helix Plus is a great option for side and back sleepers because of its spine alignment score and its firmness. If you are looking for a firmer mattress, the Helix Plus would be the better option for you.

Q.
How should I care for my Big Fig mattress?
A.
Use a waterproof mattress protector, don’t stand or jump on the mattress, and keep open flames away from your bed. Remove stains using a spray upholstery cleaner and a soft cloth.
Q.
My Big Fig mattress has developed body impressions—is that normal?
A.
Yep! The mattress materials will conform to your body’s shape over time. This isn’t considered a manufacturing defect. Rotate your mattress 180 degrees a couple of times a year to keep the impressions even.
Q.
What is mattress tufting?
A.
Mattress tufting is a process that helps to prevent sagging or shifting in the cover materials. It involves securing string fasteners (tufts) across the mattress surface.
