Score Breakdown

Set-up Test

It took us exactly one minute and twenty seconds to unbox the Bowery Hybrid mattress. This mattress was very light and easy to handle. There was only a slight off-gassing odor, but lots of plastic to cut through. The Bowery Hybrid puffed to its full size almost instantly.

So for our setup test, the Bowery Hybrid gets an 8.5 out of 10.

Motion transfer is just a fancy way of saying how much movement you feel if your partner is moving around. You want this to be pretty minimal.

Part A – The Humans

The Mattress Advisor motion transfer test is a two-part test. We start by asking both sleep subjects to lie on the bed, blindfolded, and rate on a scale from one to ten how much movement they felt when their partner was moving around with 10 being no movement at all.

While our sleep subjects were testing motion transfer on the Bowery Hybrid, they noticed they very rarely felt their partner’s movements except for when they got in and out of bed. So for the first part of our motion transfer test, they gave the Bowery Hybrid an 8.5.

Part B – The Wine Test

Next, comes our wine test. This is a great visual indicator of how much motion is being transferred from one side of the bed to another.

We had one of our sleep subjects lie down and roll back a forth a few times. We then took a look at how much the wine inside of the glass moved.

That wine was pretty stealthy while on the Bowery Hybrid. We gave it a 9 for our wine test.

So for a total motion transfer score, the Bowery Hybrid gets an 8.75 out of 10.

Edge Support Test

When choosing a mattress, you may not think to consider how much support the edge provides. But if you find yourself sleeping on the edge of your bed or use the end to get ready in the morning, you should definitely consider the edge support.

The Mattress Advisor edge support test is a two-part test.

Part A – The Shoe Test

To start, we asked our sleep subjects to sit on the edge of the bed to tie their shoes. They rated this task on a scale from one to ten, with 10 being “extremely easy, with exceptional edge support.”

Support on the end of the Bowery Hybrid mattress was fairly well. Our testers gave it an 8 out of 10 for the edge shoe test.

Part B – The Side Test

Next, we had our sleep subjects lie on the edge of the bed in each sleeping position, side, stomach and back, to see if they could sleep comfortably in that section of the bed.

They felt the edge of the Bowery Hybrid had exceptional support. So for the edge support side test, this mattress scored a 9.

So the Bowery Hybrid gets a total score of 8.5 out of 10 for edge support.

Pressure Relief Test

When shopping for a mattress, you’ll want to find something that puts minimal pressure on your hips, thighs and shoulders. This is especially important for athletes when it comes to joint pain. Let’s take a look at how well the Bowery Hybrid mattress provides pressure relief.

We measure pressure relief by using a pressure mapping film that shows areas of high pressure. Here’s what you need to know: the cool spots are good and the warms spots are bad. The warmer the color, the more pressure is being placed on that area of the body.

We saw some indications of pressure on our sleep subjects as shown by their pressure map results below. Sleep subject one had areas of yellow in her hips and shoulders, while sleep subject two had areas of red in the hips.

So for a total pressure relief score, the Bowery Hybrid gets an 8 out of 10.

Spine Alignment Test

Did you know your sleeping posture is just as important as your posture when you are awake?  For every mattress we test, we take a look at how well it keeps your spine in a straight line.

We took a close up of both of our sleep subjects backs to see the alignment. You’ll want to see a straight line from the neck all the way to the tailbone.

Our sleep subject’s spines were in good alignment while on the Bowery Hybrid. We saw no major dips in their back while on the mattress.

For spine alignment, the Bowery Hybrid gets an 8.75 out of 10.

Responsiveness Test

When it comes to getting comfortable on your mattress, responsiveness becomes very important. Responsiveness is just a fancy way of saying how well the mattress adjusts or responds to your sleeping positions while you sleep.

We had our mattress testers lie in each sleeping position, side, stomach and back. As they changed positions and got settled in, we asked them to rate on a scale from one to ten how quickly and easily the mattress responded to their movement.

The Bowery Hybrid does a decent job responding to its sleepers.

It scored an 8 out of 10 for responsiveness.

What Makes the Bowery Hybrid Different?

In-House Production

Did you know Brooklyn Bedding owns its manufacturing process from start to finish? That means middleman costs don’t increase the price on their products. This autonomy allows for instantaneous design adjustments, based on real customer feedback, and greater control over quality construction, materials and cost.

Exceptional Pricing

Speaking of controlled costs, the Bowery Hybrid mattress is economically priced so no one has to sacrifice good sleep, which comes at a much higher price. Because Brooklyn Bedding oversees its own production process, they can bring you the comfort of gel memory foam and support of pocket coils at a competitive price of $799 for a queen.

Great for Couples

The Bowery Hybrid mattress performed very well in the Mattress Advisor motion transfer test — it scored an 8.75. This makes the Bowery Hybrid a great option for couples! Given its affordable price tag, the Bowery Hybrid would make a great mattress for couples just starting out who may be on a strict budget.

What to Watch Out For

  • Be aware that your Bowery Hybrid mattress may have a mild scent when you unbox it – this is normal and should go away within a few hours.
  • It may take up to 30 nights to get used to sleeping on your Bowery Hybrid mattress.

Customer Reviews on the Bowery Hybrid Mattress

Immediately noticed the difference between our old regular mattress and our hybrid. My hips & shoulders sink in just slightly and I don’t feel like the bed is “sucking us in”. I feel like my spine is a lot more aligned. I don’t feel hot while sleeping on this, and it is a bit more firm than expected, which is exactly what we wanted! I am eight months pregnant, so a comfy bed is a godsend at this point! Rebecca R.
I am so happy with the mattress. I went from all foam to hybrid and do not regret the switch. I can feel a change in my spine and lower back already. It's easier falling asleep and getting out of bed in the morning. My only regret is waiting this long to ditch my all foam mattress. Carrie G.
This bed has improved my sleep tremendously. It is comfortable to sleep both on my back and side, the bed supports me well. Jacob A.
