Who We Recommend The Casper For:

  • Versatility fans – If your partner has a different body type or you’re a person who switches positions a lot, you might like how versatile the Casper mattress is. The bed is built to work with multiple shapes in different positions by strategically layering their foam.

  • Spine alignment seekers – The firmer foam in the center of the bed helps hold your hips in line, which can be a struggle, especially for stomach sleepers.

  • Hot sleepers – If you’ve shied away from foam beds in the past because of heat retention concerns, you have little to worry about with the Casper mattress as it features AirScape™ foam with thousands of perforations for maximum airflow.

Who We Don’t Recommend The Casper For:

  • People who prefer innerspring bedsThere are a lot of advantages to all-foam beds: lower price, minimal motion transfer, and a slow-moving feel. However, if you love the buoyancy of a bed with coils, such as traditional innerspring mattresses or hybrid models, then you may find that Casper’s flagship mattress isn’t for you.

  • Eco-conscious shoppersWhile many mattress companies are utilizing more natural and organic materials in their beds, Casper has yet to catch up. While their beds are well-made, this may not be the brand for you if you fall into this category.

First Impressions: Firmness & Feel

Firmness Scale: 6/10

Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.

The Casper falls into the ideal medium-firm rating, a versatile middle-ground feel that should work for the widest range of sleepers. At Sleep Advisor, we rate mattress firmness on a scale of 1-10. 1 is the softest, and 10 is the firmest.

You’ll find that the majority of beds tend to fall within this medium range, though some brands provide softer and firmer variations. However, it’s important to note the subjectivity of firmness, especially concerning a person’s body weight and sleep position, as both of these can affect how a bed performs for that sleeper.

How Does It Feel?

The top feels soft and cool to the touch. Pressing into the foams, you should notice how responsive they feel or how quickly they regain their shape when pressure is released.

Lying down, you should feel immediate sinkage into the top layer of breathable foam as the lower layer of memory foam slowly conforms to the shape of your body. With built-in gradual transitions between each layer of foam, you shouldn’t feel “bottomed out” or up against the firmness of the base.

What We Like About the Casper

  • Zoned Support™ – The Casper’s middle layer is made up of a memory foam with 3 ergonomic zones designed to provide softer support under the shoulders and firmer support underneath the stomach, hips, and lower back. As a result, this provides enhanced comfort and support to the spine.

  • Cooling foam – This may be an all-foam bed, but Casper has implemented their proprietary AirScape™ foam at the top to help you stay cool. This foam is perforated to boost airflow.

  • The versatile feel – We’ve rated this bed at a medium-firm feel, and the good news here is that means this product is useful for a variety of sleepers, including couples. Medium-firm often provides that ideal mix of support and pressure relief for most sleep types.

Our Casper Complaints

  • No innerspring feel – This is an all-foam bed, providing excellent motion isolation, but if you want more of an innerspring bounce in your bed, you may steer towards the company’s hybrid mattress.

  • No natural materials – Casper uses premium materials in their mattresses, but eco-conscious may be put off by the lack of natural materials in their design.

  • May not be firm enough – This Casper mattress should provide plenty of robust support for most sleepers, but individuals who carry significantly more weight may need a brand with firmer models available. That being said, a firm topper could also help if you need more firmness.

Testing the Casper Mattress: How it Performed

When testing the Casper, there are multiple categories we assess, such as cooling, bounce, motion isolation, support, pressure relief, and edge support. Additionally, we lie on the bed in each sleep position. Looking at all these different factors and seeing how the bed measures up in each category, helps us gain a thorough understanding of who we’d recommend this product to.

Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types

According to Casper, their beds do not have an official weight limit in order to accommodate all shapes and sizes. That being said, this bed won’t perform the same for each body type, which is why it’s important to consider this to ensure optimal comfort and support.

Side Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Many lightweight sleepers prefer softer beds that will give them more sinkage to relieve pressure, and this is especially true for those who rest on their side. There may be some smaller side sleepers who could sleep well on the Casper, especially considering the bed’s Zoned Support™, but generally, these people will be a better match for a softer bed.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – Average-weight side sleepers are a great match for this bed. The Zoned Support™ should help ensure there’s enough softness in the shoulders without sacrificing spine alignment in the hip area.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight side sleepers could do well on this bed, especially if they want something softer for their pressure points.

Back Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight back sleepers should find a fantastic mix of support and pressure relief from this bed, and because of the Zoned Support™ design, they shouldn’t experience too much pressure buildup in the shoulders.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – The Casper’s medium-firm feel should be ideal for average-size people who are strict back sleepers, giving them both firm support and soft pressure relief.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – The Casper had a versatile medium feel, but unfortunately, this likely won’t provide enough back support for this group. In this case, we’d recommend looking at the brand’s hybrid options.

Stomach Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – The Casper should give enough support to lighter stomach sleepers to ensure their midsection remains lifted.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – Average-size sleepers are considered those between 130 and 230 pounds. If you’re a stomach sleeper on the lower end of this spectrum, you may find the Casper supportive enough. However, if you’re on the higher end, you may find that you need a firmer option.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – As with back sleepers, heavier stomach sleepers probably won’t get the lifting they need from this model.

Pressure Relief & Pain

By using graduated firmness and zoning in its foams, the Casper works to ensure that your weight is evenly balanced.

There is slightly less sinkage in this bed than one might expect from a traditional memory foam bed, and most sleepers can expect to sleep closer to the surface of the bed. You should sink in for a gently cradled feel that works to relieve pressure with the foams working to balance your weight and fill in any gaps caused by curves in your shape.

Back Pain – People experiencing back pain should find a great match with the Casper, which contains Zoned Support™, a more nuanced support system. Rather than just feeling firm all over, Zoned Support™ provides more solid support in your heavier areas, like the hips and lower back, and softer support around the shoulders.

Hip Pain – People with hip pain should like that the Casper can help keep the hips aligned. However, the minimal sinkage might not be enough for some side sleepers, particularly lightweight ones.

Shoulder Pain – As mentioned, the Casper has Zoned Support™ for a softer feel around the shoulders, which could be excellent for those with shoulder pain. That being said, lightweight people who are strict side sleepers may want a softer bed too for more pressure relief on the shoulders.

Support

When it comes to support, the Casper’s zoning layer is the real star of this show. Most sleepers carry most of their weight in the center of their bodies, near the hips, creating sinkage that ruins spinal alignment. However, with zoned support, even those carrying excess weight should maintain healthy spinal alignment.

Beneath this layer is a robust support foam that forms the bed’s foundation and completes the support system designed to keep all shapes pressure-free and correctly balanced. This unit provides a small amount of “push-back,” or bounce, which aids in repositioning.

Motion Transfer

Though some bounce comes from the base layer, the memory foam works exceptionally well to trap vibrations caused by the sleeper’s movements before they travel across the bed to wake a sleeping partner or child. We advise most couples to pay attention to this helpful feature.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

When air can move quickly through the foam, there is less chance that body heat will become trapped, which is Casper’s strategy with its top layer of proprietary foam. Even with its all-foam structure, this mattress should sleep cool.

Performance for Couples

As mentioned above, curbing motion transfer is often a big help to couples. When one person tosses and turns, movement from the mattress could disturb the other person, but when you have a bed that helps prevents this through foam layering, this is advantageous for couples. Additionally, the medium firmness is helpful because it’s the most accommodating for both individuals.

Preference-based Features

Bed-in-a-box

There are some pop-up and retail locations for Casper products cropping up nationwide, but the company still sells online. Their business model helps reduce costs by eliminating the middleman and delivering directly to consumers in an easy-to-ship container.

Zoned Support System

The third layer of this bed provides a bit of extra support in the center of the mattress to promote better spine alignment under the hips without sacrificing the soft pressure relief usually required in the shoulder area.

Adjustable Base Compatible

If you want to use an adjustable base with this bed, the manufacturer had designed one for their line of mattresses, though it should also be compatible with other models.

Designed and Assembled in the USA

Construction: What’s Inside the Casper?

The Casper mattress is a bed-in-a-box foam mattress that stands a total of 11 inches tall. The bed’s layers are wrapped in a durable polyester fabric. All the foams in the Casper Original are also CertiPUR-US® certified to ensure you’re getting a quality and safe product.

  • Beneath the cover is the first foam layer. This unit is a perforated proprietary comfort foam called AirScape™ that gives the mattress some bounce and breathability to keep the surface from overheating.
  • The middle foam layer is 2 inches of Zoned Support™, a memory foam that is firmer in the center of the bed where your hips are positioned, helping with the extra weight that tends to concentrate in this region. Additionally, this layer is softer around your shoulders and knees for extra pressure relief. Since your body is getting tailored firmness levels, your spine should remain in a neutral alignment, which is ideal for preventing back pain.
  • The base layer is a unit of dense foam that lends durability, provides support, and creates the overall foundation of the Casper mattress.

While this review focuses on the layers of the all-foam Casper Original, the company has added a hybrid version of its flagship model to their inventory. In the hybrid version, the bottom layer is a coil unit surrounded by foam to provide a durable and supportive border.

Unboxing & Off-Gassing

Casper will ship this mattress to your home in a box, which should help make it easier to transport to your bedroom. Once you unbox the bed, let it unroll and expand. According to Casper, the bed should be ready within minutes, but this depends on the size of the bed.

You may initially notice a “new mattress smell”, which is known as off-gassing. This should dissipate within a few hours, provided the room it’s in is well-ventilated.

Certifications

  • CertiPUR-US® Certified – This CertiPUR-US® certification indicates that third parties have evaluated the foams in this mattress for the presence of unsafe levels of certain chemicals associated with VOC emissions and cleared inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Casper from Costco different?

Costco sells a Casper mattress called the Casper Select. This mattress is different from the Casper Original. The Select is an all-foam model with four foam layers and a 12-inch profile. Like the Original, the Select has breathable foam and Zoned Support™, but these are two different mattresses.

Do Casper mattresses sag over time?

Yes, Casper mattresses will eventually sag over time. You should expect your Casper foam bed to last roughly 10 years before it needs to be replaced. Not jumping on the bed and keeping it in good condition can help prolong its lifespan.

Is Casper soft or firm?

The Casper mattress is considered an industry-standard medium-firm bed. That being said, it may feel softer or firmer for those in different weight groups. For example, the Casper will feel softer to heavier sleepers and firmer to lightweight ones.

Overall Summary

The name of Casper’s mattress game is versatility, and its flagship mattress has made its mark on the industry. Since it’s so accommodating to different sleepers, especially with Zoned Support™, there’s a great chance you’ll love it.

Side Sleepers

4/5

Side sleepers need a mattress with great pressure-relieving materials since their weight is concentrated in a smaller area. Most side sleepers will notice the classic pressure relief of memory foam and find that the bed conforms nicely to their curves while keeping their spine in neutral alignment.

Back Sleepers

5/5

Most back sleepers will appreciate the medium-firm feel and extra support beneath their hips that help keep their spine aligned while the foam conforms to the curve of their lower back. If you want a touch of extra firmness, though, try out the hybrid version of this bed.

Stomach Sleepers

4/5

Stomach sleepers need a bed that is firm enough so their hips do not sink too low, forcing their spine into an awkward angle. The Zoned Support™ shines for those in the prone position by adding extra foam where it’s needed most for a majority of sleepers. However, if you prefer extra support, consider Casper’s hybrid mattress offerings.

Combination Sleepers

5/5

Many sleepers are what we call “combo sleepers.” These folks need to look at versatile brands that ease repositioning with responsive materials and accommodate different positions throughout the night. Casper mattress shines in this area, and we think this is ideal for people who fit this category.

Couples

4/5

The Casper mattress works exceptionally well for accommodating different body shapes and reducing the amount of motion that transfers. Couples who prefer more bounce and slightly better edge support may prefer the hybrids, though they may have to sacrifice motion isolation.

Heavy Sleepers

3/5

Casper is a highly versatile bed for people of various weights. However, the hybrid selections might be better for those substantially heavier than average (over 230 pounds) and who need a little extra support. You may also consider other brands that make beds specifically for heavyset sleepers.

Lightweight Sleepers

4/5

Many lightweight sleepers under 130 pounds should enjoy this bed’s multiple attributes, particularly those who sleep on their back or stomach. The Casper offers less sinkage, however, so it might still be too rigid for strict side sleepers in this weight range.

Average-Weight Sleepers

5/5

The universal feel of the Casper should be most advantageous for average-size sleepers. The bed’s medium-firm feel should deliver the optimal balance of pressure and support for people in this weight range. That being said, if you’re higher in weight, you might still want more firmness, but generally, average sleepers should enjoy the Casper Original.

Overall Value

4/5

Casper takes the time to do their research and listen to customer feedback. The result is a bed that should accommodate many different people. Having a new mattress that should adjust to your changing needs and preferences over time (pregnancies, injuries, marriages, and aging) drives up the value of this product, and the risk-free trial seals the deal.

Our Verdict

Casper offers an excellent mattress at a great price, and we highly recommend their Original model. The mattress provides tremendous pressure relief for aches and pains without sacrificing support. In addition, motion isolation in this bed is fantastic, so those who struggle sleeping next to fidgeting partners shouldn’t be bothered when they toss and turn.

Lightweight sleepers often struggle to find a mattress supportive yet soft, and this bed is perfect for these types. One of the drawbacks is that the edge support leaves a little to be desired, so if you need every inch of space, the hybrid model may provide more of this feature.
