Cocoon Mattress Review Highlights

Best Cheap Mattresses - Mattress Advisor

The Cocoon Chill by Sealy mattress is a memory foam mattress that is Sealy’s bed-in-a-box model. It’s also among our top picks for the best budget mattresses. Customers love the cooling responsiveness of Cocoon, and in this review, we’ll go into detail about pros and cons, sizes, prices, and how the Cocoon scored in our lab testing.

Read on to learn all about Cocoon.

The greatest features:

  • The Chill mattress used to come in Extra Firm and Medium Soft models. While the Cocoon no longer offers firmness options, it comes in the universal medium-firm that works for all sleep positions.
  • Like other all-foam mattresses, the Cocoon performs well when it comes to isolating motion.
  • If you tend to sleep hot, or are worried about the heat trapping that tends to come along with a memory foam bed, the Chill mattress’s cover has phase change material that’s got you covered.

Cocoon Mattress Pros and Cons

✅ Pros

  • Free Returns: Sealy offers hassle-free, free returns during their trial period.
  • Awesome Motion Isolation: If you sleep with a partner, pet, or child, motion isolation is important. The Cocoon mattress had minimal motion transfer, meaning your partner won’t wake you by moving around.
  • Great Edge Support: People who sleep on the edge of the bed or use it to get ready need a mattress with good edge support. Memory foam mattresses usually don’t accomplish this, but the Chill mattress did with an impressive 9 out of 10.
  • An Aligned Spine: Side sleepers need a straight spine when sleeping as the middle of the body usually sinks too deeply into the mattress. The Cocoon Chill kept the body evenly supported and the spine aligned.
  • Responsive: Those who toss and turn at night should look for a bed that moves with them and isn’t racing to catch up. Combination sleepers will love to hear that Cocoon scored a 9 out of 10 in responsiveness.

❌ Cons

  • Off-Gassing: There will be a slight off-gassing odor when opening your new Cocoon mattress. The smell is normal and should dissipate completely within a week.
  • Social Impact: Sealy as a company doesn’t do much in the social impact world.
  • Low Weight Limit: The Chill mattress only holds 500 pounds total weight, meaning this does not work for heavy sleepers.

Pressure Relief

Pressure relief is especially important for side sleepers, because when you lie on your side, most of your weight falls to your hips and shoulders. A mattress that doesn’t offer enough pressure relief can cause you to wake up with aches and pains, but that’s not the case with the Cocoon Chill.

Earning high marks in pressure relief, the Cocoon scored a 8.5 out of 10 in this category. This is a great bed for side sleepers looking for contouring along their pressure points; in our testing, our pressure relief map showed minimal pressure when our testers laid on their sides.

Cooling

All-foam mattresses traditionally run warmer, and don’t do as good of a job keeping you cool. The Cocoon Chill disproves that, but only somewhat.

It uses a phase change material in its cover to keep the top of the mattress cool to the touch; however, because the Cocoon is still a memory foam mattress, it won’t keep you as cool as innerspring or hybrid models would. This is why we gave it a 7.5 out of 10 for cooling.

Durability

Memory foam beds can be less durable than other mattress types like innerspring, because the foams can easily wear down overtime. You’ll be happy to know that’s not the case with the Cocoon.

We gave the Cocoon an  8 out of 10 for durability, meaning it will last you for many years. This isn’t the highest score in durability we’ve seen among other mattresses, but it’s pretty respectable for an all-foam, affordable bed.

Firmness Level

The Cocoon mattress comes in one firmness level, though it was previously two: medium-firm, which is a 6/10 on the firmness scale. The medium firmness is great for all sleep positions.

Sleeping Position Compatibility

Cocoon works for all types of sleepers. Side sleepers will have straight spines and the perfect firmness level to sink into the mattress. Stomach sleepers and back sleepers get optimal spine alignment and support. And this is a good mattress for combination sleepers thanks to Cocoon’s responsiveness. For more recommendations by sleeping position, jump over to our guides below.

Will You Sleep Hot?

The Cocoon Chill mattress specializes in cooling. This comes from its phase change mattress cover that absorbs heat and dissipates it, keeping you cool-to-the-touch and making it one of the best mattresses for hot sleepers.

Though the Chill mattress is cooling, it is still a memory foam mattress, meaning that a bed made with innersprings or latex foam will ultimately be cooler.

How Much Weight Does it Support?

Cocoon holds up to 500 pounds of weight on a queen size mattress: not enough to support most plus-sized sleepers.

Best Compatible Bed Frames

The Cocoon will work best on a flat, sturdy surface, including an adjustable base, box springs, platform bases, and slatted platforms. If you choose a slatted platform, make sure the slats are no more than five inches apart and are at least two inches wide.

Mattress Construction

The Cocoon is made up of three premium foam layers, one of which you can pick a medium or firmer option for. The Cocoon mattress is made in the USA and the foams used to make the Cocoon are CertiPUR-US certified, meaning it’s safe for both you and the environment.

  • Cover: Premium stretch-knit fabric cover that’s breathable and soft. The cover is infused with material that absorbs and dissipates heat for a cool to the touch surface. Be aware that this layer won’t be directly near your body if you decide to use a mattress protector, topper or thick sheets.
  • Top layer: Perfect fit memory foam adapts to your body type and sleep position.
  • Middle layer: Responsive comfort layer made of polyfoam.
  • Base layer: Support foam designed to be durable and resilient to prevent premature sagging and sinkage.

Is Cocoon Chill the New Mattress for You?

The Cocoon mattress by Sealy is a great choice for you if you want the memory foam experience. The Cocoon works for all sleep positions. This is reflected in its high scores across the board in pressure point relief, spine alignment, responsiveness––and in motion transfer, so if you sleep with a partner, the Cocoon’s a nice choice that’ll help you sleep uninterrupted.

Although it’s reasonably priced, the Cocoon isn’t the most economical choice on the market. But for all that you get, it still offers great value. The Cocoon also isn’t the greatest choice for hot sleepers; though it boasts some cooling properties, it doesn’t measure up in terms of cooling to innerspring or hybrid mattresses. And for plus-sized individuals, the Cocoon has a pretty low weight limit, so I’d look elsewhere.

But, have no fear, we have a suitable alternative that benefits both hot sleepers and the plus-sized crowd: the GhostBed. The GhostBed is only $100 more than the Cocoon, but uses latex foam to offer phenomenal cooling and support. Latex is an extremely durable material, so heavyweight sleepers can rest assured on the GhostBed. Also, for those on a budget who still want the memory foam experience, we recommend the Nectar. It offers high-quality sleep at a disruptively low price point.

Compare Cocoon Chill

Cocoon vs Bear

The Bear Mattress is very comparable to the Cocoon in terms of construction, price and what they offer. The Bear is a memory foam mattress like the Cocoon, but features an innovative Celliant cover that assists with muscle recovery and cooling by reflecting infrared light back to the body. It’s a great choice for athletes and active individuals as well as hot sleepers–– it earned a 9 out of 10 for cooling. The Bear uses graphite-infused foam, an open-cell foam design and a heat-absorbing Celliant cover, all of which help keep night sweats at bay.

Like the Cocoon, the Bear is reasonably priced at $890 for a Queen. The Cocoon is about $40 more, but both are pretty affordable. Both mattresses have high scores in spine alignment, responsiveness and edge support, but there’s a few areas they differ. The Bear is the better cooling mattress, making it a better choice for hot sleepers, while the Cocoon offers better pressure relief and motion isolation, accommodating side sleepers and couples nicely. But, you can’t go wrong with either pick if you’re looking for a durable, memory foam bed that’ll keep you comfortable and supported for years.

Cocoon vs Layla

Like the Cocoon by Sealy, the Layla also offers multiple firmness options, but this time all in the same bed. The Layla is a flippable mattress with a medium-soft option on one side and a medium firm feel on the other. This makes the Layla a bit more versatile, because if one side feels too soft or hard, all you have to do is flip the mattress.

The Layla is also a memory foam bed like the Cocoon, but it’s infused with copper that boasts pain-relieving, cooling properties. This makes the Layla a bit more pricey than the Cocoon, coming in at just over $1,000 for a Queen. For what you get though, the Layla is still a great deal. The Layla earned high marks in pressure relief, motion transfer, edge support and responsiveness like the Cocoon, but was lacking in spine alignment, while the Cocoon offers near-perfect spine alignment. Both mattresses are a great choice for all sleep positions with their multitude of firmness options, but if you like the convenience of having all of those options in 1 bed, I’d go with the Layla.
