Where It Is/Isn’t Effective

✅ Pros

  • Good for Couples: With sturdy edges and above-average motion isolation abilities, the CRāVE mattress has what we look for in a mattress for couples. Solid edges allow you to spread out and motion isolation properties help you sleep soundly.
  • Supports a Healthy Spine: Proper spinal alignment can make the difference between waking up refreshed or with new neck and back pain. The CRāVE did an excellent job of providing healthy spinal alignment for our mattress testers.
  • Responds to Movements: The bouncy innerspring coils and proprietary responsive foams quickly adapt to movement. This means it’s easy to move around and get comfy.
  • Excellent Temperature Regulation: Open-cell foam and airy steel coils support breathability, keeping hot sleepers cool.

❌ Cons

  • Off-Gassing Odor: There may be a slight odor after you unbox your CRāVE mattress. This should go away within a few hours to a few days.
  • Little Social Impact: CRāVE doesn’t have a social mission on their website, nor do they appear to be involved in local volunteer work like many leading online mattress companies.
  • Mediocre Pressure Relief: Our sleep testers had some areas of high pressure in their shoulders.

Responsiveness

When it comes to getting comfortable on your mattress, responsiveness becomes very important. Responsiveness is just a fancy term that describes how well a mattress adjusts or responds to your movements.

To determine how well a mattress responds to movements, we have our sleep testers lie in each sleeping position. As they change positions and get settled in, we ask them to rate how quickly and easily they did so.

Our mattress experts, RJ and Asha, both got comfortable quite quickly on the CRāVE Hybrid, earning it an 8.75/10 for responsiveness. This is an impressive score for a mattress with a top memory foam layer.

Pressure Relief

When shopping for a mattress that’s good for side sleepers, you’ll want to find something that puts minimal pressure on the hips and shoulders. Even back sleepers need some cushion at the lower back for the best night’s sleep.

We measure pressure relief by using a pressure mapping film that shows areas of high and low pressure. Here’s what you need to know: the cool spots are good and the warm spots are bad. The warmer the color, the more pressure is being placed on that area of the body.

RJ’s pressure mapping results showed mainly cool blues and greens with some warm yellows and reds in his shoulders. Not too much pressure, but still a bit more than we’d like to see in an ideal world, so we gave the mattress a 7/10 for RJ’s pressure relief.

Asha’s pressure mapping results had more red in her shoulders, earning the CRāVE a 6.5/10 for Asha. Combined, the CRāVE mattress scored a 6.75/10 in our pressure relief test.

While back and stomach sleepers are likely to experience sufficient cushioning, side sleepers may prefer a softer top layer. This is especially true for side sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds.

Spine Alignment

Did you know that your sleeping posture is just as important as your posture when you’re awake? For every mattress we test, we take a look at how well it keeps your spine in a happy, neutral alignment.

We took a close-up image of both RJ’s and Asha’s backs to determine how well their spines were supported. What we want to see is a straight line from the neck to the tailbone.

Both RJ’s and Asha’s spines were straight with the exception of a slight curve, earning the CRāVE Hybrid an 8/10 for spine alignment.

Firmness and Feel

CRāVE’s Luxury Firm Hybrid Innerspring mattress is a medium-firm bed. Its firmness level falls at a 7 on the 1–10 firmness scale, with 1 being ultra-soft and 10 extra-firm. Medium-firm mattresses are preferred by the average sleeper thanks to the balance between pressure relief and support.

Will It Work for Your Sleep Position?

The CRāVE mattress works well for every sleeping position, although it’s best for back sleepers, a top mattress for stomach sleepers, and good bed choice for combo sleepers. The high-density memory foam top layer provides the level of pressure relief needed by those who sleep on their stomachs and backs.

Side sleepers who prefer a relatively firm feel will also enjoy the CRāVE, but don’t expect it to hug the hips and shoulders like a softer bed. Head over to our best mattress for side sleepers article for better recommendations.

Sleep Temperature

The CRāVE mattress doesn’t sleep hot. A thick layer of innerspring coils allows air to sweep through and remove built-up body heat. The upper foam layer is also designed to support airflow to keep the sleeping surface cool.

Will It Work for Your Body Type?

The CRāVE mattress doesn’t have a set weight limit, but we believe that it works well for lightweight and heavyweight people. Thanks to firmer upper foam layers and a resilient coil support system, this bed is supportive enough for plus-size sleepers.

Foundations and Bed Frames

The CRāVE Mattress will work on any firm, flat surface. This includes a box spring, platform frame, slatted base, adjustable frame, or even the floor.

Mattress Layers

The CRāVE Hybrid Innerspring mattress contains layers of CertiPUR-US certified foam layers and a thick core of innerspring coils for comfort, durability, and support.

inside crave
  1. Removable Mattress Cover: A stretch-knit cover that’s soft and flexible. It’s made from a polyester and nylon blend fabric.
  2. Memory Foam Comfort Layer: A high-density memory foam top layer lightly conforms to the body’s unique curves for pressure point support and cushion.
  3. Instant Response Layer: Fast-response polyfoam makes it easy to move around without feeling stuck.
  4. Transition Layer: A foam designed to prevent excess sinkage while protecting pressure points from the steel coils below.
  5. Pocketed Coils: A support layer crafted from individually encased coils. Because these coils move independently from one another, they cushion pressure points and support lighter body parts, all while minimizing motion transfer. Nested coils add durability along the edges to prevent roll-off.
  6. High-Density Support Foam: A thin base layer of durable polyfoam safeguards the coil layer, supporting mattress longevity.

CRāVE Mattress Unboxing

The CRāVE Luxury Firm Hybrid Innerspring mattress took us just over a minute and a half to set up. The CRāVE mattress was a little heavy on the packaging and came in a large, long box—making it a bit hard to maneuver. The mattress had little smell but took some time to puff to life. It came to its full shape after a few hours.

For our setup test, CRāVE gets a 7 out of 10.

Should You Buy the CRāVE Mattress?

The CRāVE Hybrid Innerspring is a high-quality mattress that pairs the benefits of pressure-relieving memory foam with supportive pocketed coils. During our in-house testing, the CRāVE mattress excelled in our edge support, responsiveness, spine alignment, and cooling tests. As a result, we recommend this mattress for couples that like to spread out, people who toss and turn, people with back pain, and hot sleepers.

CRāVE’s medium-firm feel works well for the average sleeper, particularly for people who sleep primarily on their back or stomach. The one test that this mattress didn’t do so well on was our pressure relief test. Specifically, our testers experienced a lot of pressure at their shoulders. If you’re a side sleeper who’s ever experienced shoulder pain, consider a mattress that’s a bit softer. We recommend the DreamCloud Premier mattress or the Brooklyn Aurora

Compare CRāVE

The CRāVE Hybrid Innerspring Mattress vs Other Hybrid Mattresses

CRāVE’s Luxury Firm Hybrid Innerspring mattress is a high-end bed. As such, its price point is slightly higher than the average hybrid. Thanks to 13.5” of memory foam, polyfoam, and pocketed coils, the CRāVE is more durable than most hybrid mattresses, and it also offers greater support. For this reason, the CRāVE is better than most hybrids for heavy people.

The Luxury Firm Hybrid Innerspring Mattress vs CRāVE’s Other Mattresses

CRāVE manufactures five memory foam and memory foam hybrid mattresses in an effort to fit the needs of every shopper. Here’s how the CRāVE Luxury Firm Hybrid compares to their other beds.

Luxury Firm Hybrid Innerspring Mattress vs Ultra Plush Hybrid Innerspring Mattress

Even though these two CRāVE mattresses have names that would lead you to believe that one is simply a softer version of the other, they’re actually made from different materials.

Both mattresses have memory foam, polyfoam, and innerspring coils, but only the Ultra Plush has an upper layer of egg crate latex foam. The addition of latex makes the Ultra Plush slightly cooler than the Luxury Firm. However, the biggest difference between the two is that the Ultra Plush is much softer than the Luxury Firm model.

Luxury Firm Hybrid Innerspring Mattress vs Luxury Firm Foam Mattress

Both of these mattresses have a medium-firm feel but only the Luxury Firm Hybrid has a layer of bouncy innerspring coils. The Luxury Firm Foam mattress utilizes high-density foam rather than springs for support.

Thanks to the support coils, the Hybrid is bouncier, cooler, and more responsive. But with its all-foam construction, the Luxury Firm Foam mattress is better at isolating movements—great for couples.

Luxury Firm Hybrid Innerspring Mattress vs Medium Firm Foam Mattress

The Medium Firm Foam mattress is slightly softer than the Luxury Firm Hybrid. While both contain layers of memory foam and polyurethane foam, the Hybrid has springy coils and the Medium Firm Foam mattress a layer of latex foam. The Hybrid is cooler with a bouncier feel and the Foam mattress delivers a closer contouring feel. The all-foam mattress is less expensive than the Hybrid.

Luxury Firm Hybrid Innerspring Mattress vs Firm Foam Mattress

CRāVE’s Firm Foam mattress is just slightly firmer than their Luxury Firm Hybrid bed. With only two inches of memory foam as a comfort layer, the Firm Foam mattress is best for people who weigh less than 230 pounds. The generous layers of foam and coils make the Hybrid mattress better for heavier people. The hybrid is also cooler and easier to move around on. The Firm Foam bed is cheaper.

FAQs

Q.

Is the CRāVE mattress eco-friendly?

A.

CRāVE uses 30% plant-based foams and 100% CertiPUR-US and Oeko-Tex certified foams. What this tells us is that the CRāVE mattress is better for the environment than the average all-foam or hybrid bed. However, there are natural and organic mattresses that are more eco-friendly.

Q.

Can I try the CRāVE mattress in a physical store?

A.

No, you won’t find CRāVE beds at local brick-and-mortar retailers. That’s why they give you 100 nights to try the mattress in your bedroom before deciding if it’s the right fit. Trust us, those nights are far more telling than a few minutes in a showroom.

Q.

Should I buy a waterproof mattress protector for my new mattress?

A.

We recommend that you do. A waterproof mattress protector is the only way to fully protect against spills or accidents that could void the sleep trail or warranty.

Q.

Are CRāVE mattresses made in the United States?

A.

CRāVE beds are made in North Carolina using local materials sourced within 200 miles of their North Carolina factory.

Q.

How do I clean the CRāVE mattress?

A.

To clean the CRāVE Mattress, simply spot clean with a homemade cleaning solution, upholstery cleaner, or enzyme cleaner. Although the cover may be zipped off, do not put it in the washing machine. It will shrink.
