The bottom line: The Eight Sleep Pod Pro mattress is a smart bed that pairs unique cooling technology with three layers of foam to create a bed that is ideal for sleepers who want complete control over their bed’s temperature. The foam mattress does a solid job of contouring to your body, and the star of the show, the Active Grid Cover, tracks your sleeping habits and utilizes an ancillary device called The Hub to generate your ideal sleeping climate.

Eight Sleep Pod Pro Mattress Review Quick Look

The Eight Sleep mattress is composed of five foam layers that would constitute a decent bed by its own right, but what makes the Eight sleep a truly unique smart mattress is the active grid technology which can be completely controlled by the eight sleep app on any smart device.
This review will break down how this high-tech bed functions, and whether or not the impressive functions of the Eight Sleep make it worth the considerable price point.
Why We Love It:
- The Eight Sleep mattress cover, also called the Active Grid cover, contains surface spanning sensors that measure your respiratory rate, heart rate, deep sleep duration, and other patterns throughout the night. This sleep data is then compiled into a report that awards a grade based on the quality and duration of your sleep, all of which can be accessed in the Eight Sleep app on iOS or Android smart devices.
- This app also allows for complete temperature control of the mattress cover. Within the active grid are small tubes that connect out to The Hub, a small container that uses hydro-engines to pump warm or cold water, depending on your preference, into the mattress cover. The Hub can be set to as low as 55°F and as high as 110°F
- If you sleep with a partner, the mattress cover can be set to two different temperatures depending on each of your preferences.
- The foam bed combines polyfoam comfort layers with a dense base to contour to your body without ever letting you sink too far in.
- In addition to giving you a sleep score, the sleep tracking app can also be used as a white noise machine and smart alarm, which can be linked to the Active Grid cover to gently vibrate at a set time so that you wake up peacefully.

Eight Sleep Pod Pro Test Highlights
✅ Pros
- Cooling: Unsurprisingly, the mattress received a perfect score for cooling. Though we don’t test for it, the Eight Sleep is also great for people who sleep cold and are looking for a warmer option.
- Responsiveness: The Eight Sleep Pod Pro scored a solid 8 on our responsiveness test, thanks in large part to the 2” layer of polyfoam that quickly contours to your body as you toss and turn.
- Edge Support: This field indicates whether or not a mattress has edges that will hold up under pressure. If you often find yourself rolling close to the side of the bed then you’ll want something that won’t sag as you do. With an 8.75, the Eight Sleep mattress won’t let you down.
- Eight Sleep offers two other mattress models: A more affordable option called The Pod and a more advanced option called The Pod Pro Max.
❌ Cons
- Price: Those shopping for an affordable mattress should look elsewhere. The price of a queen sized Eight Sleep Pod Pro is $2,595.
- Surface Feel: Although you can’t quite feel the smart mattress cover while you are lying on it, it does create an odd sensation; almost as if you are floating in a pool. Of course, this may be something that you get used to or even enjoy immediately, so it is by no means a dealbreaker.
- Set-Up: Given the incorporation of additional elements like The Hub and the Eight Sleep app, setting up this mattress is more involved than the typical bed-in-a-box. Also, Eight Sleep doesn’t offer white glove delivery.
Motion Transfer
Sharing a bed with a restless partner can make it difficult to get a good night’s sleep, especially on a bed with a low motion transfer score. The higher the score the better the bed is at absorbing and therefore isolating motion.
While all-foam mattresses tend to isolate motion well, we did not find that to be the case with the Eight Sleep. This could be a result of the smart cover containing the water tubes and sleep sensors, which, although not uncomfortable, does affect the surface-feel of the mattress.
Spine Alignment
One of the most important things for a mattress to do is keep your body properly oriented, especially the spine. If your bed aligns to your spine’s natural curve it can do wonders for those who suffer from neck and back pain.
The combination of comfort and support foam in the Eight Sleep is proportioned very well for spine alignment; heavier parts of your body will sink into the mattress while lighter parts are supported by the comfort foam.

Pressure Relief
Though it scored well when it came to supporting the spine, we found that the Eight Sleep didn’t do a great job of supporting sensitive pressure points like our shoulders and hips. When lying on our sides we felt a significant amount of pressure in these areas, as you can see from the heat map below.

What’s the Firmness of Eight Sleep Mattress?
The Eight Sleep Nod has a medium-firm feel with a firmness level of 6 out of 10. At this level you’re likely to feel that the mattress is responsive and soft, though not too soft that you can’t comfortably move around.

What Sleeping Positions Work on the Eight Sleep Mattress?
Side Sleepers
Because the Eight Sleep received a low pressure relief score, it likely isn’t the best choice for side sleepers, who need a generous amount of cushioning on the shoulders and hips.
Back Sleeper
The medium-firm feel of this mattress is in the back sleepers sweet spot; they need a bed that is not too firm and not too soft.
Stomach Sleeper
Like back sleepers, stomach sleepers tend to enjoy a mattress that is medium-firm, between 5.5 and 6.5 on the firmness scale. They need just enough cushion so that their hips sink into the surface, but not too much. The Sleep Eight Pro Pod should be perfectly comfortable for the average stomach sleeper.
Combination Sleeper
The primary trait of combination sleepers is that they move frequently throughout the night. As such, they need a bed that is responsive and springy, so that the bed quickly adapts to them as they move around freely. The Sleep Eight Pro Pod, with a responsiveness score of 8, can provide that.

Does the Eight Sleep Mattress Sleep Warm?
Not unless you want it warm! The temperature regulation feature in the Eight Sleep Pod Pro works fantastically, and for most people is likely its biggest selling point. The smart mattress cover is divided into two individual zones and the temperature of each zone can be adjusted independently. You tend to sleep warm but your sleep-partner gets cold at night? No problem!

What Sizes/Shapes does the Eight Sleep Mattress Support?
The Eight Sleep mattress can support up to 500 lbs of weight. If you weigh under 230 lbs then you should feel well supported by the bed, but those who weigh more may notice some unpleasant sinkage.
What Foundations Are Compatible With The Eight Sleep?
The Eight Sleep can be used on any foundation or bed frame, but if you are using a slat set then the company recommends that they be no more than 3 inches apart.

A Look Inside the Eight Sleep Pod Pro
There are five distinct layers of the Eight Sleep Pod Pro mattress – four layers of foam and, of course, the Active Grid smart cover. The foam layers alternate between support and comfort, creating the medium-firm feel that allows you to feel cradled but not engulfed like you might on a memory foam mattress.
The bottom layer is 4” of high-density foam that provides structure and absorbs movement from the layers above. On top of that are the FlexSpring core and Supportive Air foam, which cradle and support your body with an aim to reduce pressure in areas like the lower back and neck. Next is the Airflow top layer: 2” of foam that helps the mattress adjust to your body’s movements. The top layer is where the smart technology comes into play – 1” of foam integrated with the sensors and cooling tubes that measure your sleep quality and regulate the bed temperature.

- Active Grid Cover with Integrated Foam: Serves as a sleep tracker and temperature regulator; integrated into 1” of foam so there is no discomfort
- Airflow Top Layer: A layer of foam that wonderfully responds to your body’s movement
- Supportive Air Technology: Reduces pressure in areas where aches and soreness are common
- FlexSpring Technology Core: Enhances the cradling ability of the mattress
- Durable Premium Base: Absorbs movement and provides the bed with structure

Eight Sleep Mattress Unboxing
Unboxing the mattress took just over a minute, but setting it up to the point where it was ready to sleep on took another six and that does not take setting up the app into account. There was a slight off-gassing odor that faded within several hours of unboxing.

Eight Sleep Mattress Shipping and Delivery Explained
Eight Sleep offers free shipping and delivery to any state inside of the contiguous United States, meaning every state besides Alaska and Hawaii. They do not currently ship anywhere else in the world. They do not offer while glove delivery, so you will be responsible for disposing of your old mattress and setting up your new mattress. No signature is required upon delivery.
Eight Sleep Mattress Sleep Trial Explained
Upon delivery, you will have 100 nights to spend with the Eight Sleep mattress. If, within that time period, you decide you are unhappy with it then you may return the mattress. However, we recommend you take at least 30 days with it before making a decision. A new bed takes time to break in and for our body to adjust to it. You may find that you feel completely different about the Eight Sleep after a few extra days.
Eight Sleep Mattress Warranty Simplified
The foam mattress comes with a 10 year limited warranty that covers any defect determined to be related to craftsmanship of the product rather than improper setup or use. This 10 year warranty, however, only applies to the foam mattress. The Eight Sleep Pod Pro’s the technology layer, or the Active Grid cover, is only covered for 2 years.

Is It Right For You?
The Eight Sleep Pod Pro is the best temperature regulating mattress we have ever tested, likely because it was designed with that feature in mind. If you are someone that has trouble sleeping simply because you overheat or get cold, then this is absolutely the mattress for you. It’s also a tech-lovers dream come true! Not only can you track your sleep and regulate temperature with the app, you can also sync it to wifi connected smart home devices like Amazon Alexa, Google Home, or a Wemo coffee maker.
Aside from the obvious appeal of the technology, the Eight Sleep Pod Pro is just a really solid mattress. The materials are great quality and the medium-firmness will appeal to most sleepers. That said, if you are someone who needs a bed that will provide superior pressure relief and outstanding motion isolation then you may want to look elsewhere. We suggest the Casper Hybrid.
Another factor that may sway your decision is the price point. If $3,095 is a bit too steep for you but you’re still after a good mattress that will provide quality sleep then check out the Tuft & Needle.
