Helix Kids Mattress Review At-a-Glance
They say kids do most of their growing while they’re asleep, so why not get them a mattress that grows with them? The Helix Kids mattress features dual comfort levels to adjust to your child’s changing body. Like some of the other best mattresses for kids, this bed pays careful attention to the materials used to construct it and provides excellent pressure relief.
What We Love About the Helix Kids Mattress
- Naturally Hypoallergenic: Those with allergies or sensitive skin no longer have to worry since the Helix Kids mattress uses a TENCEL® cover, which keeps dust and allergens from sticking to it.
- Stain and Water Repellent: All Helix Kids mattresses come with RUCO®-DRY BIO NPE, which is a plant-based water-repellent finish to combat stains and spills.
- Odor-Fighting Microbe Shield: The Helix Kids mattress cover comes treated with AEGIS® Microbe Shield to fight bacteria and promote optimal hygiene.
- Non-Toxic Materials: Helix uses CertiPUR-US® foams free of harmful chemicals, lead, mercury, and PBDE flame retardants.
- Easy-to-Read Labeling: The Helix Kids mattress labels the firmer side “3-7” to designate it’s for younger children and the softer side “8-12” with a bright, lime green trimming separating the two.

Helix Kids Performance Highlights
✅ Pros
- Responsiveness: Five little monkeys will definitely enjoy jumping on this bed thanks to the coil system that makes it extra bouncy!
- Pressure Relief: As a hybrid mattress, the Helix Kids uses pocket coils and plush foam to cushion key pressure points at night.
- Cooling: Helix uses a combination of a breathable cover, innersprings, and gel foam to help ensure a cooling mattress for little sleepers.
❌ Cons
- Motion Transfer: The Helix Kids didn’t do very well in our motion isolation test , which shouldn’t be too much of a problem since children normally sleep alone, but can make you sneaking away after storytime a little tricky.
- Customer Service: Getting ahold of the Helix customer service team can be a challenge as they don’t have a live chat feature on their website and don’t list a phone number to call them at.
Motion Transfer
The Helix Kids mattress’s springs make it difficult to isolate motion. We found the firm side, in particular, had trouble stifling the sound of our movements. This is more of an important factor for couples who don’t want to disturb their partner and likely won’t impact the average child who sleeps alone.
If motion isolation is something important to you, you may want to consider sticking to the soft side since it does a little better isolating motion. You also can consider a mattress with a higher score in this category, like the Puffin.
Edge Support
As a parent, you know that it sometimes seems like your high-energy kid is constantly in motion—even in their sleep. Thankfully, the Helix Kids mattress has excellent edge support, meaning you don’t have to fret about your child rolling off their bed. Its coil system reinforces the mattress’s perimeter, giving it the strength to hold you up when you lean in to give a goodnight kiss.
Pressure Relief
The Helix Kids mattress earned a near-perfect pressure relief score thanks to its ability to help support growing bodies. Its pocketed coils respond to your child’s body, providing targeted relief in the hips and shoulders. This partners with the gel-infused memory foam to offer excellent cushioning.

Where Does It Fall on the Firmness Scale?
With a dual-sided design, the Helix Kids mattress has both a soft and firm option. On the soft side, we scored it a 4.5/10. Here, we felt that satisfying give like when you collapse onto a big pile of leaves.
The firmer side was closer to a 6.5/10, or the industry standard for medium-firm. It did a better job of offering support, which younger sleepers need. Overall, this mattress is so comfortable that many parents may find themselves falling asleep on it, too! Neither side is too far on either side of the firmness scale, making it perfect for even the pickiest of kids.

Does the Helix Kids Sleep Cool?
If your kid often gets hot at night, you know how important it is to find a cooling mattress. Thankfully, the Helix Kids mattress does a great job of eliminating heat. This starts with a cool-to-the-touch TENCEL® cover that promotes breathability. The mattress also incorporates gel throughout the memory foam layer to encourage a cooling surface. Finally, the mattress allows air to move freely through the use of pocketed coils.

How Much Weight Does the Helix Kids Mattress Support?
The durable steel coils allow the Helix Kids Mattress to hold up to 500 lbs. Back sleepers weighing over 230 lbs may want to consider a firmer mattress, like the Puffy Original, to provide them with more support.
What Sleeping Position Does It Work For?
The Helix Kids mattress is compatible with all sleeping positions for kids weighing less than 130 lbs. Like most hybrid mattresses, the Helix Kids works especially well with side sleepers who benefit from the individual coils that reduce pressure on hips and shoulders. Since the Helix Kids isn’t very firm, it may not work as well for heavier stomach or back sleepers who need more support.

What Foundations or Bed Frames Are Compatible?
In order to qualify for the Helix Kids mattress warranty, Helix asks that you use a solid platform, bunkie board, or slatted foundation. If you’re using a slatted foundation, make sure the slats are no more than 5” apart to avoid potential sagging. Hybrid mattresses like the Helix Kids mattress do best with supportive foundations that can handle the spring coil base. Helix recommends avoiding using a traditional box spring since it doesn’t provide enough support.

Helix Kids Mattress Materials
The Helix Kids hybrid mattress features a plant-based durable water repellent, AEGIS® Microbe Shield, and TENCEL® cover. With CertiPUR-US certified foam, you know your child isn’t sleeping on toxic chemicals or PBDE flame retardants. All Helix Kids mattresses undergo lead and phthalate testing to provide you with peace of mind. This 8” mattress contains 3” of foam and 5” innerspring.

- Mattress Cover: An antimicrobial, water-repellent cover made with breathable TENCEL® encircles the Helix Kids mattress, providing a soft, hygienic shield.
- Fire Retardant Layer: The fire retardant layer keeps children safe at night by protecting them from potential flammability.
- Firmer Support Layer: The firmer support layer, designed for children ages 3-7, consists of high-grade polyfoam to offer spinal support for growing bodies.
- Body Shape Coils: Comprised of hundreds of individual 5” coils, the body shape coils both cradles and provides proper edge support.
- Softer Comfort Layer: A softer side, designed for children ages 8-12, uses gel memory foam to provide a plush, pressure-relieving feel.
- Fire Retardant Layer: Another layer of fire retardant protects this mattress, along with the side panels.

What’s Unboxing Like?
The Helix Kids mattress comes compressed and sealed in a tall, rectangular box. Since this model weighs between 60-75 lbs., you may want to get help carrying the box to the room where you plan to put your mattress. Once there, you can unbox the mattress and place it on your sleeping foundation. It took us about 2 minutes to unbox the mattress in our lab and we didn’t notice any off-gassing smells.
The Helix Kids mattress can take between 1-2 hours to fully expand. After setting up your new bed, feel free to give the artwork-covered mattress box to your kids for some coloring adventures!

Is the Helix Kids Right for You?
The Helix Kids mattress is a great fit for parents looking to transition their child from a crib to their first “big kids” bed. Its flippable design makes it work well for pretty much any sleeping position and helps it grow with your child. This mattress also does a great job of keeping your kid cool at night.
One downside of this mattress is that it doesn’t isolate motion very well. Helix also only offers this mattress in twin and full sizes, so if you’re looking for a larger bed option, you may want to consider something like the Nectar mattress, which comes in a queen, king, and California king size. Those looking for an affordable mattress may find the high price tag to be a turn-off as well.

Who’s It Best For? |

The Saatva Youth and Helix Kids mattresses are both flippable and feature a firmer side and a softer side. These beds are meant to grow with your child, so you start them on the soft side and switch them over to the firm side once they get older. The Saatva Youth is designed to feel medium-soft to your child even after you flip it to the firmer side. The Helix Kids will feel firmer to your child after you flip it.
These beds are both great choices for kids, but the Saatva may be a better choice for stomach sleepers and kids who like a firmer feel. The Helix is cuddlier and a better choice for side sleepers. The more affordable Helix is also a better choice for budget shoppers. On the other hand, the pricier Saatva Youth features organic materials, making it a good pick for eco-conscious families.

Helix Kids vs. Leesa
Criteria | Helix Kids | Leesa |
Mattress Advisor Score | 8.5/10 | 9.1/10 |
Firmness | Dual firmnesses (4.5/10 and 6.5/10) | Medium-Firm (6/10) |
Material | Hybrid | Memory Foam |
Who’s It Best For? |
|
|
The flippable Helix Kids mattress is designed to grow with your child. You can flip it over to its firmer side when your child is older so that they get the support they need, but it’s soft and cuddly enough to work for toddlers on its softer side. The original Leesa mattress is not designed for kids and, since it’s not flippable, has only one firmness level. So, if you’re looking for a mattress to use with young children, the Helix Kids mattress is the way to go. The Helix Kids mattress is also cheaper than the Leesa, which makes it a good option for parents looking to save a few bucks on a new child’s mattress.
But, if you want a mattress for an older child (or want a size larger than full for a child who tosses and turns near the edge of the bed) the Leesa might be the better choice. It was designed for adults, so it’s more supportive than the Helix Kids mattress. Its medium-firm feel is suitable for all sleeping positions, so your child should be comfortable throughout the night on this bed.
