Score Breakdown

Set-up Test

The Helix Midnight LUXE mattress took us just under two minutes to unbox. The mattress had a pretty potent odor at first, although, it went away after about a day. This mattress was really heavy, so make sure you have some help when setting it up! It didn’t take its full size immediately after opening but after a couple of hours, it was at full size.

So for our setup test, the Midnight LUXE gets a 7.75 out of 10.

Motion Transfer Test

Motion transfer is just a fancy way of saying how much movement you feel if your partner is moving around. You want this to be pretty minimal.

Part A – The Humans

The Mattress Advisor motion transfer test is a two-part test. We start by asking both sleep subjects to lie on the bed, blindfolded, and rate on a scale from one to ten how much movement they felt when their partner was moving around with 10 being no movement at all.

While our sleep subjects were testing motion transfer on the Midnight LUXE they noticed they could feel their partner moving around when laying on the mattress. So for the first part of our motion transfer test, they gave the Midnight LUXE a 7.5.

Part B – The Wine Test

Next, comes our wine test. This may sound like a cheesy test, but it is a great visual indicator of how much motion is being transferred from one side of the bed to another.

We had one of our sleep subjects lie down and roll back a forth a few times. We then took a look at how much the wine inside of the glass moved.

The glass of wine on the Midnight LUXE mattress had a slight tilt, but overall, held its own. For this test, it scored an 8.

So for a total motion transfer score, the Midnight LUXE gets a 7.75 out of 10.

Edge Support Test

When choosing a mattress, you may not think to consider how much support the edge provides. But if you find yourself sleeping on the edge of your bed or use the end to get ready in the morning, you should definitely consider the edge support.

The Mattress Advisor edge support test is a two-part test.

Part A – The Shoe Test

To start, we asked our sleep subjects to sit on the edge of the bed to tie their shoes. They rated this task on a scale from one to ten, with 10 being “extremely easy, with exceptional edge support.”

Support on the end of the Helix Midnight LUXE mattress was pretty good. Our mattress testers felt secure when sitting on the edge of this mattress. However, they did feel a slight dip with their full weight on the bed. They scored it a 7.5 for the edge shoe test.

Part B – The Side Test

Next, we had our sleep subjects lie on the edge of the bed in each sleeping position, side, stomach and back, to see if they could sleep comfortably in that section of the bed.

When they were laying on the edge of the Midnight LUXE, our sleep subjects thought the mattress did a better job gripping their body as they approached the edge. They scored the mattress an 8.5 out of 10 for the second part of our edge support test.

So the Midnight LUXE gets a total score of 8 out of 10 for edge support.

Pressure Relief Test

When shopping for a mattress, you’ll want to find something that puts minimal pressure on your hips, thighs and shoulders. This is especially important for athletes when it comes to joint pain. Let’s take a look at how well the Midnight LUXE mattress provides pressure relief.

We measure pressure relief by using a pressure mapping film that shows areas of high pressure. Here’s what you need to know: the cool spots are good and the warms spots are bad. The warmer the color, the more pressure is being placed on that area of the body.

We saw only a little pressure on the shoulders of our sleep subjects.

So for a total pressure relief score, the Midnight LUXE gets a 8.5 out of 10.

Spine Alignment Test

Did you know your sleeping posture is just as important as your posture when you are awake?  For every mattress we test, we take a look at how well it keeps your spine in a straight line.

We took a close up of both of our sleep subjects backs to see the alignment. You’ll want to see a straight line from the neck all the way to the tailbone.

The spines of our sleep subjects were nearly straight. There was only a slight curve of the spine as it approached the base of the neck.

For spine alignment, the Midnight LUXE gets a 9 out of 10.

Responsiveness Test

When it comes to getting comfortable on your mattress, responsiveness becomes very important. Responsiveness is just a fancy way of saying how well the mattress adjusts or responds to your sleeping positions while you sleep.

We had our mattress testers lie in each sleeping position, side, stomach and back. As they changed positions and got settled in, we asked them to rate on a scale from one to ten how quickly and easily the mattress responded to their movement.

The Helix Midnight LUXE did a decent job responding to its sleepers. The felt like the mattress adjusted quickly to their changes in sleeping position.

It scored an 8.75 out of 10 for responsiveness.

What Makes the Midnight Luxe Different Different

Superior Cooling

The LUXE mattresses come with an exclusive, built-in cooling cover. The Ultra-Cool cover regulates body temperature with cooling technology in the fabric that absorbs access body heat. Even months after opening this mattress, the Midnight LUXE is still cool to the touch. While the LUXE mattresses have built-in cooling toppers, they are also sold separately on the Helix website for you to zip on to a standard Helix mattress model.

Exceptional Spine Alignment

Another unique feature of the LUXE mattresses by Helix is the zoned-lumbar support offered by the pocket coil core layer. This means different areas of the mattress offer varying levels of support. Specifically, the Midnight LUXE offers softer support in the upper body region to cradle your shoulders, while simultaneously providing firmer support around the hips to help prevent a dip in the lower back. This zoned-support assists the LUXE in providing exceptional spine alignment.

What to Watch Out For

  • Be aware that your Helix Midnight Luxe mattress may have a mild scent when you unbox it – this is normal and should go away within a few hours.
  • It may take up to 30 nights to get used to sleeping on your Midnight Luxe mattress – particularly if your previous mattress was a traditional innerspring mattress.

Customer Reviews of the Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress

I replaced a hot latex mattress of 18 years with the Helix Midnight Luxe. I am a hot side sleeper. My nights are much cooler, the mattress isn't neutral for heat, I still have warm nights just not hot. I am still experimenting with bedding and thinking about the Helix pillow to replace my buckwheat pillows of many years. Seems to be a keeper, looking forward to cool summer nights. Russell B.
This mattress is quite decent, but a little expensive for what you get. I do not notice that much better of sleep but I can say it is more comfortable than my last mattress. It does slouch a bit on the sides from lack of support. I would recommend it if it was a little less expensive. Maybe I should have gone with the Non-Luxe mattress. Timothy M.
The bed is nice. It’s took us a while to get use to it as the bed seems pretty firm at first but it’s just really supportive. It does help my back alignment greatly. Shawn S.

Helix Midnight LUXE Mattress FAQs

How does the Helix Midnight LUXE compare to the original Helix Midnight mattress?

The LUXE mattresses are 4” taller than the standard Helix mattresses. Additionally, the LUXE models are built with a premium cooling pillow top, as well as, superior zoned lumbar support.

Can I finance my Helix Midnight LUXE mattress?

You can finance your Helix mattress through Klarna. To take advantage of financing options, select “Pay With Klarna” at checkout, follow the prompts, and enter some basic information for an instant loan decision. You can get approved for a rate as low as 0% APR.

If you decide to finance your mattress, you will not be able to apply discount codes or promotions to your order.

*Klarna loans are not currently available for residents of West Virginia and New Hampshire

How does the 100 night sleep trial work?

From the day your Helix mattress is delivered, you will have 100 nights to decide if the mattress is right for you. If you decide to return your Helix, you’ll simply contact the customer support team within your trial period window and they will walk you through the return process. A representative will arrange for your mattress to be picked up from your home and donated to a local charity in need. You won’t need to put the mattress back in the box it came in.

How long can the Midnight LUXE stay in the box?

Helix recommends keeping your mattress in its box for no longer than three weeks after its arrival date. Allowing your mattress to stay compressed beyond this time adds a risk of slowing down the expansion time for your mattress.

How long will it take to break in the Helix Midnight LUXE mattress?

It may take around 30 to 45 nights to fully break in your LUXE mattress. This time also accounts for the time needed for your body to adjust to a new mattress.

Should I flip my mattress?

No. This mattress is not designed to be flipped. In fact, the ordering of the layers is critical to the performance of the mattress. However, you can rotate your mattress, but this is not necessary.

Can I clean the Midnight LUXE?

Unlike the standard Helix mattresses, you cannot zip off the LUXE mattress covers due to the pillow top. However, you can spot clean your LUXE mattress. For spot cleaning, use a mild detergent and gently dab the cover rather than rubbing it. If you anticipate large spills or stains, you may want to invest in a mattress protector for easier washing.
