Helix Moonlight Highlights

Helix is a bed-in-a-box mattress company that crafts high-quality hybrid beds. Their original Helix line consists of six different mattresses designed to fit the needs of every sleeper. The Helix Moonlight is one of the softest Helix beds and it is designed for back and stomach sleepers

In this review, we’re going to help you decide if the Helix Moonlight is the best mattress for you by exploring how it performed at the Mattress Advisor lab, its pros and cons, and how it compares to the other Helix mattresses.

What We Like About The Helix Moonlight:

  • The Helix Moonlight is one of the softest mattresses created for stomach and back sleepers, which makes it a good choice for people who require reliable support and ample cushion.
  • Thanks to the Moonlight’s hybrid design and cooling cover, it offers exceptional breathability. This makes it a decent cooling mattress for average sleepers.
  • Helix will send you a free mattress topper if you find your new mattress too soft or too firm.
  • The Helix Moonlight is super durable thanks to its combination of coils and high-density foam. In fact, Helix is so sure that it’s made to last that they offer a 10-year warranty with it.

Pros and Cons

✅ Pros

  • Spinal Alignment: Keeping your spine in a neutral position at night is very important, which is why you’ll be happy to hear the Helix Moonlight earned a near-perfect score in this category.
  • Motion Transfer: Helix Moonlight did pretty well in our lab tests, especially in our wine test. Our wine test shows how well the Moonlight mattress isolates motion—the liquid barely moves!
  • Cooling: The cooling cover combined with a layer of pocketed coils means the Moonlight mattress allows for great airflow, so your body heat won’t get too trapped in the foam layers.
  • Durability: The steel coils plus the high-quality memory foam equal a mattress that should last its entire lifespan.

❌ Cons

  • Pressure Relief: The Moonlight mattress offers decent pressure relief to stomach and back sleepers, but not so much for side sleepers.
  • Edge Support: The plush top layers of the Moonlight make you sink in too far for good edge support, which isn’t too much of a problem if you tend to sleep in the center of your bed.

Sleepers who toss and turn may want to pay attention to their mattress’s responsiveness. It measures how quickly you can get comfortable after you change positions and how easy it is to move.

Our sleep testers noted that while it was very easy to get comfortable in each new position, the top layer of foam over the springs makes it slightly difficult to change positions, giving it an 8.5 out of 10.

Pressure Relief

Using a pressure map, we saw how much the Helix Moonlight relieved pressure from the back, hips, and shoulders for each sleeping position.

When our testers lie down on their stomach, we noticed almost no pressure in key areas: tons of cool blues and greens.

When they lie on their backs, it was much of the same: all green and blue with little to no pressure.

The problem came when each tester tried lying on their sides. We saw lots of warm yellows and reds in the hips and shoulders, indicating high pressure in these areas. Over time, this could lead to shoulder or hip pain. If you’re a side sleeper, consider the Mend Adapt mattress, which scored 10/10 in this category and is great for side sleepers.

Spinal Alignment

How good your mattress’s alignment is can dictate if you wake up with back pain in the morning. We had our testers lie on their sides and stomachs to measure spinal alignment in each position.

When we tried lying on our stomachs, our hips sank in enough to flatten our backs enough for decent stomach alignment.

When we switched to the side, we saw nearly perfect results. Our hips and shoulders sank in just enough to straighten the spine, while our middles did not dip too much in the foam. Take a look for yourself!

Product Details

The Moonlight is a soft mattress, with a firmness that rates at between a 2 and 3 on the 1–10 firmness scale. You’ll feel hugged by the top layer as the transition and support layers minimize excess sagging. For a firmer option, consider Helix’s best-seller, the Helix Midnight.

What Sleep Position Does It Best Support?

The Helix Moonlight works well for almost every sleeping position except for side sleepers. Here’s why:

  • Stomach sleepers sink in enough to get decent alignment and we see almost no pressure on the chest and hips in this position, making it a top bed for stomach sleepers.
  • Back sleepers bodies feel the contouring of the foam layer around their spine, allowing it to maintain its natural curve and relieve pressure and making it a good type of mattress for back sleepers.
  • Combination sleepers, who are prone to tossing and turning, should find it easy to get comfortable in each new position, so it’s a great bed for combo sleepers.
  • Side sleepers will have awesome alignment but won’t have great pressure relief on the hips and shoulders, which can lead to pain over time.

Temperature Regulation

The Helix Moonlight mattress uses a cooling cover paired with a system of innerspring coils to provide breathability throughout the mattress. Despite this, we found it to have average temperature regulating abilities due to the thick foam layers that sit atop the coils. To make the mattress cooler, consider adding the Helix GlacioTex Cooling Cover to your cart during checkout.

Which Body Types Does the Mattress Support?

The Helix Moonlight is designed for sleepers of any body shape or size, with a maximum weight of 500 lbs per individual. Keep in mind that this is a softer mattress, so heavier people may find the comfort layers too cushy.

What Bed Frames Can Be Used?

The Moonlight works with most foundations, including adjustable bases, platform frames, and slatted bases. Helix doesn’t recommend using the Moonlight atop a box spring unless you use a bunkie board on top for added firmness and support.

Feel and Construction

The Moonlight is a four-layer hybrid mattress crafted from a variety of proprietary foams and individually-encased coils. Let’s take a look at what each layer is made from and how they influence the sleeping experience.

  1. Mattress Cover: Helix’s Soft Touch Design cover supports optimal airflow
  2. Comfort Layer: Helix Dynamic Foam is a proprietary polyfoam that blends the benefits of latex and foam for close contouring and a responsive feel.
  3. Transition Layer: A second layer of soft Helix Dynamic Foam ensures adequate cushion, support, and motion isolation
  4. Innerspring Support Layer: Pocketed coils provide targeted support and give for excellent contouring and body alignment.
  5. Base Layer: DuraDense Foam is a high-density polyfoam that brings the extra support needed for durability.

Setting up the Helix Moonlight

Like other bed-in-a-box mattresses, the Helix Moonlight comes in a rectangular box that stands tall. Take it to your bedroom before you unbox it for easier transportation.

It took us nearly two minutes to completely open and set up the mattress. The coils made the bed pretty heavy, so we suggest asking a partner to help you unbox. The off-gassing was average and went away quickly.

Is the Moonlight Mattress for You?

The Moonlight mattress is a softer mattress offered by Helix. When you purchase this bed, you receive a 100-night trial period and a 10-year warranty

We think you’ll love the Moonlight if:

  • You sleep on your back or stomach.
  • You suffer from back pain.
  • You’re looking for an affordably priced hybrid mattress.

We think you should keep looking if:

  • You are a side sleeper prone to aches and pains.
  • You are a plus-size sleeper.
  • You prefer a memory foam feel.

If you’ve decided to continue shopping, you could pick from any of Helix’s other hybrid models. For foam shoppers, we recommend the Loom & Leaf mattress. It is a memory foam bed that supports all weights and sleep positions.

Helix Moonlight vs Other Hybrid Mattresses

Most soft mattresses are designed for side sleepers. The Helix Moonlight is one of the only soft hybrid beds designed with the needs of back and stomach sleepers in mind. The soft surface is a good fit for people who like a cuddly feel or need extra softness to cushion joints, while the contouring and support ensure that the spine maintains a neutral alignment.

The Moonlight vs Other Helix Mattresses

The Moonlight vs the Standard Helix Mattress Collection

The standard Helix mattress line consists of six hybrid mattresses that were engineered to fit the needs of every sleeper. By utilizing various foams of different densities and pairing them with a layer of innerspring coils, Helix has a mattress that fits your body size, firmness preference, and sleeping position. Here’s how the Moonlight compares to the other Helix models:

  • Moonlight vs Sunset: Both the Helix Sunset and Moonlight are plush mattresses, but a different comfort layer makes each mattress best for different sleepers. The Sunset mattress has a plush memory foam comfort layer designed for side sleepers, and the Moonlight has a layer of Helix Dynamic Foam that offers a more balanced feeling ideal for back and stomach sleepers
  • Moonlight vs Midnight: The Helix Midnight is a medium firmness mattress while the Moonlight is a soft bed. The Midnight’s memory foam top layer delivers superior pressure relief designed for side sleepers. The Moonlight’s upper layer marries the plush feel of foam with the contouring feel of latex for stomach and back sleepers who like a cloudlike surface.
  • Moonlight vs Dusk: The Helix Dusk and Moonlight mattresses are each designed for stomach and back sleepers. However, the Moonlight has a softer surface than the Dusk.
  • Moonlight vs Twilight: The Helix Twilight is a firm mattress engineered for side sleepers that works incredibly well for those who weigh more than 230 lbs. The Moonlight is a soft bed designed for back and stomach sleepers who like a soft surface. It’s particularly great for lightweight people.
  • Moonlight vs Dawn: Both the Helix Dawn and Moonlight beds were designed to offer the support and contouring needed by people who sleep on their backs and stomachs. However, the Moonlight is soft and the Dawn is firm.

To help you find the right fit, Helix offers a sleep quiz on their website. We especially love the quiz for couples as it can help you find the mattress that works best for both of you.

The Moonlight vs Helix Luxe Mattress Collection

The standard Helix mattresses each have a more lavish Helix Luxe model. Each of the Luxe mattresses is designed for the same sleepers as the standard models, but with a more luxurious feel. Here’s an overview of the unique features that you’ll find in the Luxe mattresses.

  • Zoned Support Layer: Sturdier coils along the lumbar region and softer coils at the shoulders deliver superior spinal alignment.
  • Luxury Pillow Top: You know how some mattresses just feel more opulent than others? This is often due to a high-end pillow top like that found in the Helix Luxe mattresses.
  • Cooler Mattress Cover: An all-natural Tencel fabric means a slightly cooler mattress surface.
  • Sturdier Edges: Premier edge support coils create a mattress with comfortable, firm edges.
  • Additional Foam Layer: An additional layer of comfort foam creates even better motion isolation and cushioning

The Moonlight vs the Plus

Helix crafts the Helix Plus mattress specifically for heavier people. The Plus mattress is firmer, thicker, and more supportive than the Moonlight. While the Moonlight has a plush feel, the Plus is a medium firmness bed that balances cushioning with support. This makes the Moonlight better for lighter people and the Plus for heavier folks. Learn more in our Helix Plus mattress review.

The Moonlight vs the Birch

The Birch is Helix’s eco-friendly mattress. It’s made using layers of wool, cotton, and all-natural latex for a medium-firm feel with a very moderate cushion. The Moonlight’s foam and coil construction is much softer, although both beds work best for people who sleep on their back or stomach. Learn more in our Birch mattress review.

Helix Moonlight Mattress FAQs

Where are Helix mattresses made?

Helix has factories across the United States. Every mattress is handmade in the U.S.A.

How long can I keep my new mattress in its box?

It’s best to remove your new bed right away, but you can leave it in the box for up to four weeks. Any longer can lead to permanent compression, so your mattress wouldn’t expand to its full size.

Should I flip my Helix bed?

No. All Helix mattresses are one-sided, so you should not flip your mattress.
