⭐Total Score for the Joybed LXC Mattress: 8.3/10⭐

Key Performance Components

✅ Pros

  • Good Pressure Relief: The Joybed does a decent job cushioning pressure points, particularly when you’re on your back or stomach.
  • Excellent Spine Alignment: The LXC did a great job supporting our sleep testers’ lumbar region, which is good for people with back pain
  • Impressive Durability: High-quality cotton and innerspring coils create a mattress that’s more durable than the average bed.

❌ Cons

  • Not the Best for Couples: Most couples prefer a mattress that dampens motion and allows them to comfortably spread out along the edge of the bed. With mediocre scores in our tests for motion transfer and edge support, this isn’t the best bed for couples.
  • Cooling Potential: Hot sleepers may not find the Joybed LXC cool enough. It’s not as cool as a lot of other natural and hybrid beds.

Motion Transfer

If you share your bed, you don’t want to get a mattress that shares your partner’s every move. This is why we test mattresses for how well they limit motion transfer. To do this, we conduct two tests: the wine test and the partner test.

The wine test is useful as it gives us a visual when it comes to motion transfer. We fill a wine glass up with red wine, balance it on one side of the mattress, and have one of our sleep testers move around on the other side. What we want to see is a still glass with very little movement within.

When our sleep subject got on the bed the wine was a little tilty, particularly when they got on and off the bed. Therefore, the Joybed got a 7/10 for the wine test.

The partner test replicates a real-life scenario: having a partner toss and turn in bed with you. We have our testers lie side by side on the mattress and take turns switching from one sleeping position to the next.

While our subjects were on the Joybed, they could feel their partners’ movements pretty distinctively. The bed felt a little “shaky.” They gave it a 7.5/10 for the partner test.

Combined, the Joybed LXC earned a 7.25/10 for motion isolation—not the score that we’re looking for if you’re a light sleeper who shares the bed.

Spine Alignment

Body alignment matters 24/7. When you’re awake, healthy alignment is termed posture. When you’re asleep, we simply call it spine alignment. To see how well a mattress supports a healthy spine, we have our sleep testers lie on their sides and take a look at their spines. What we want to see is a straight spine.

As you can see from the image below, the Joybed LXC kept the spine in nearly perfect alignment. We gave the Joybed an 8.75/10 for spinal alignment, a good score if you struggle with back pain or are working on your posture.

Pressure Relief

Have you ever felt excess pressure when lying on a mattress? This is a common occurrence for many side sleepers, especially when on a firm mattress. For people with hip, shoulder, or lower back pain, a mattress with pressure-relieving properties tends to be the most comfortable.

We get technical when we test for pressure relief, using a pressure-mapping film and digital imaging. We have two sleep testers lie on the mattress on top of the pressure-mapping film and we look for areas of high pressure which are shown by warm colors.

Take a look at the pressure mapping images below. There are some warmer areas at the hips and shoulders, but they’re not so severe that back and stomach sleepers are likely to have major problems. But because there’s red at the shoulders, we’d recommend most side sleepers opt for the medium-plush option that comes with four extra inches of plush cotton.

Where Is the Mattress on the Firmness Scale?

The Joybed LXC is a medium firmness bed that rates at a 5 on the 1–10 firmness scale, with 1 being the softest and 10 the firmest. When you opt for the medium-plush mattress, Joybed includes their four inch cotton topper which makes the mattress a medium-soft bed.

Does It Support Your Sleep Position?

The Joybed LXC mattress supports every sleeping position. However, we only recommend the standard medium-firm (which feels more like a medium) for stomach sleepers and back sleepers because the comfort layers readily compress, which can put pressure on the hips and shoulders of side sleepers. If you spend most of your time on your sides or if you prefer a softer feel, we recommend the medium-plush LXC.

If you constantly move around at night, the Joybed LXC’s average responsiveness can make combination sleepers feel a bit stuck.

If you want to compare this bed to other top mattresses by sleeping position, head over to our guides below.

How Well Does It Regulate Temperature?

While the Joybed’s innerspring layer adds a touch of breathability, the multiple cotton layers don’t offer the same level of airflow as some other mattress materials. As a result, the LXC doesn’t regulate body temperature well enough for some hot sleepers, although many people will find the temperature comfortable.

How Much Weight Is Supported?

The Joybed LXC doesn’t have a set weight limit, but when we reached out to their customer service team, we were told that it can support up to 300 pounds. Keep in mind that the cotton comfort layers aren’t as dense as foam layers, so heavier people may come into contact with the springs, which isn’t the most comfortable sleeping experience.

Foundations and Bed Frames

The Joybed mattresses are pretty low maintenance. They’ll do fine on any firm, flat surface like a platform bed frame, slatted base with slats two inches or less apart, a box spring in good condition, an adjustable base, or even the floor. However, the more supportive your foundation, the better.

Inside the Mattress

The Joybed is crafted from natural fibers and individually encased coils for a cloudlike feel with reliable support. Here’s what’s inside.

inside lxc joybed
  1. Organic Cotton Cover: A soft and breathable cover made from GOTS Certified organic cotton.
  2. Plant Fiber Fire Barrier: An all-natural fire barrier made from potato and bean plant fibers
  3. Cotton Comfort Layers: Two layers of cotton grown in the USA bring a plush softness and breathable comfort.
  4. Cotton Transition Layer: A firmer layer of cotton padding protects the body from the supportive coils beneath, adding a slight conforming feel.
  5. Innerspring Support Layer: A base layer of individually encased coils evenly distributes body weight and keeps the body from sagging. A double coil layer lines the bed’s perimeter for sturdy edge support.

Unboxing and Setup

It took us two minutes and twenty seconds to unbox the Joybed mattress. This mattress was pretty heavy and difficult to handle. It puffed to life instantly but was slightly wrinkly and didn’t take its full shape immediately. It had a funky odor, but it was not off-gassing from chemicals. Rather, it was due to the use of natural materials.

Joybed Purchasing Information

Here’s what you can expect when you buy your next mattress from Joybed.

Policy Details
Delivery Free delivery; arrives in 2–7 business days
Trial Period 120-night trial
Warranty 10-year warranty
Return Policy Free exchanges or $139 return fee
Financing Available through PayPal, Synchrony, or Progressive Leasing

Where Do They Ship Free?

Joybed offers shipping to all 50 states, but only ships for free to the lower 48 states. You can expect your new mattress to arrive compressed in a box in two to seven business days. Unless your delivery person deems the drop location unsafe, you won’t need to be home to sign for the mattress.

How Long Is the Trial Period?

The Joybed LXC comes with a 120-night sleep trial starting the day that you receive your new bed. They don’t accept returns until after you’ve owned your mattress for 30 nights. This ensures that you’ve given your body time to adjust to a new mattress

While 120 nights is more generous than the typical 100-night trial for a bed-in-a-box mattress, most of these beds come with full refunds while Joybed charges a $139 processing fee. However, Joybed works to see if there’s a way to make the bed work. For instance, they may send you a free mattress topper if it seems like some added softness would help. They also offer free exchanges.

What the Warranty Covers

The Joybed LXC comes with a 10-year warranty that covers defects in materials or workmanship. One of the more common reasons people submit for warranty claims with mattresses is surface indentations which are covered once there is a permanent indentation of an inch and a half or greater.

Joybed Customer Service

Joybed customer service is available seven days each week. Their hours are Monday to Friday 9 a.m.–6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.–6 p.m., and Sunday 12 p.m.–6 p.m. Here’s how you can contact them.

  • Live chat at joybeds.com
  • Email support@joybeds.com or sales@joybeds.com
  • Call 1-877-601-7035

When Does the Return Policy Start?

After you’ve owned the Joybed for 30 days, you can return it during the 120-night trial period. Joybed does charge a $139 fee for returns. They’ll work with you to find a local charity for mattress donation. Typically, the charity comes to your door and picks up the mattress, making returns quite simple. Only after proof of donation will you receive your refund.

Should You Buy the Joybed LXC Mattress?

The Joybed LXC is an excellent mattress for the eco-conscious consumer. It’s made using renewable and recyclable materials, including organic cotton and innerspring coils. Not only are these materials great for the environment, but they’re also non-toxic and safe for your health.

When we put this mattress to the test at our mattress lab, it earned high marks in our spine alignment and pressure relief tests. These results suggest that the LXC is a good choice for people with aches and pains. The standard option’s medium firmness works well for back and stomach sleepers, but we recommend the medium-plush upgrade for side sleepers and anyone who weighs more than 230 pounds.

The Joybed didn’t score so highly in our tests for motion transfer, edge support, and cooling. Most couples will sleep better on a bed that isolates motion and has solid edges that work for spreading out, such as the GhostBed Flex. And hot sleepers may prefer the cooler sleeping experience of the Casper Wave Hybrid mattress.

See How Joybed LXC Compares

The Joybed LXC vs Other Natural Mattresses

The Joybed LXC is one of few vegan natural mattresses. Rather than using wool for fire protection, Joybed utilizes plant fibers from potatoes and peas as a vegan-friendly alternative. Another difference is that most natural mattresses have latex top layers while the LXC has thick cotton comfort layers. The difference means the Joybed is slightly softer, although it doesn’t offer the same responsive feel or contouring that comes with latex foam.

The Joybed LXC vs Other Joybed Mattresses

Joybed crafts three natural mattresses with varying materials and comfort levels. Here’s how the LXC compares to Joybed’s other mattresses.

  • The Joybed LXC vs the Joybed LX: These two beds are quite similar with the main difference being that the LX is made from cotton and innerspring coils while the LX has both of these materials and wool. The LX is a medium-firm mattress while the LXC comes in either medium or medium-plush
  • The Joybed LXC vs the Joybed LXP: You can think of the LXP as a more luxurious version of the LXC. Both mattresses are made using cotton, plant fibers, and innerspring coils. However, the LXP has an additional layer of cotton padding, microcoils, and zoned innerspring support for superior body alignment and pressure relief. Read our full Joybed LXP mattress review.

Joybed LXC Mattress FAQs

Q.

Is the Joybed made from all organic materials?

A.

Not entirely. While the cover is 100% organic, the materials under the hood are naturally sourced but not completely organic. A 100% organic mattress can be very expensive so Joybed uses the highest quality non-organic materials to keep their mattress at an affordable price point. However, the materials used to make the Joybed meet some of the most rigorous standards and are completely recyclable.

Q.

Does the Joybed have a break-in period?

A.

Because the Joybed doesn’t have any foam layers, it will reach its final feel more quickly than most beds. However, it’s the body that needs time to adjust to the feel of a new mattress. This can take anywhere from a few nights to around a month.

Q.

Can I try the LXC in-person?

A.

The only brick-and-mortar retail locations that carry this mattress are US-Mattress retail stores in Michigan. The best way to determine if the LXC is right for you is to buy it online from joybeds.com and take advantage of the 120-night sleep trial.
