Score Breakdown

Setup Test

It took us two minutes and twenty seconds to unbox the JoyBed mattress. This mattress was pretty heavy and difficult to handle. It puffed to life instantly but was slightly wrinkly and didn’t take its full shape immediately. It had a funky odor, but it was not off-gassing from chemicals. Rather, it was due to the use of natural materials.

So for our setup test, the JoyBed gets a 7.5 out of 10.

Motion Transfer Test

Motion transfer is just a fancy way of saying how much movement you feel if your partner is moving around. You want this to be pretty minimal.

Part A – The Humans

The Mattress Advisor motion transfer test is a two-part test. We start by asking both sleep subjects to lie on the bed, blindfolded, and rate on a scale from one to ten how much movement they felt when their partner was moving around with 10 being no movement at all.

While our subjects were on the JoyBed, they could feel their partners movements pretty distinctively. The bed felt a little “shakey.” They gave it a 7.5 for the first part of this test.

Part B – The Wine Test

Next, comes our wine test. This is a great visual indicator of how much motion is being transferred from one side of the bed to another.

We had one of our sleep subjects lie down and roll back a forth a few times. We then took a look at how much the wine inside of the glass moved.

When our sleep subject got on the bed the wine was a little tilty, particularly when our sleep subject got on and off the bed. Therefore, the JoyBed got a 7 for the wine test.

So for a total motion transfer score, the JoyBed gets a 7.25.

Edge Support Test

When choosing a mattress, you may not think to consider how much support the edge provides. But if you find yourself sleeping on the edge of your bed or use the end to get ready in the morning, you should definitely consider the edge support.

The Mattress Advisor edge support test is a two-part test.

Part A – The Shoe Test

To start, we asked our sleep subjects to sit on the edge of the bed to tie their shoes. They rated this task on a scale from one to ten, with 10 being “extremely easy, with exceptional edge support.”

The support on the edge of the JoyBed was pretty average; although, not as supportive as our subjects would have liked it to be. They gave it a 7 for the shoe test.

Part B – The Side Test

Next, we had our sleep subjects lie on the edge of the bed in each sleeping position, side, stomach and back, to see if they could sleep comfortably in that section of the bed.

During this test, our sleep subjects felt the support on the edge was better on the side when they were laying down than the end of the bed when they sat. For this part of the test, they scored the JoyBed an 8.

So JoyBed gets a total score of 7.5 out of 10 for edge support.

Pressure Relief Test

When shopping for a mattress, you’ll want to find something that puts minimal pressure on your hips, thighs, and shoulders. This is especially important for athletes when it comes to joint pain. Let’s take a look at how well the JoyBed mattress provides pressure relief.

We measure pressure relief by using a pressure mapping film that shows areas of high pressure. Here’s what you need to know: the cool spots are good and the warms spots are bad. The warmer the color, the more pressure is being placed on that area of the body.

Pressure relief on the JoyBed was pretty good! There were minimal warm colors on our sleep subject’s pressure map results.

So the JoyBed scores an 8 out of 10 for pressure relief.

Spine Alignment Test

Did you know your sleeping posture is just as important as your posture when you are awake?  For every mattress we test, we take a look at how well it keeps your spine in a straight line.

We took a close up of both of our sleep subjects backs to see the alignment. You’ll want to see a straight line from the neck all the way to the tailbone.

The spine’s of our sleep subjects were in very good shape on the JoyBed—they were nearly straight.

For spine alignment, JoyBed gets an 8.75 out of 10.

Responsiveness Test

When it comes to getting comfortable on your mattress, responsiveness becomes very important. Responsiveness is just a fancy way of saying how well the mattress adjusts or responds to your sleeping positions while you sleep.

We had our mattress testers lie in each sleeping position, side, stomach, and back. As they changed positions and got settled in, we asked them to rate on a scale from one to ten how quickly and easily the mattress responded to their movement.

Our sleep subjects found it slightly difficult to get settled into the JoyBed while on their side. They noted it felt slightly stiff like a traditional innerspring mattress.

So the JoyBed scored a 7.5 out of 10 for responsiveness.

What to Watch Out For

  • Be aware that the JoyBed mattress may have a mild scent when you unbox it – this is normal and should go away within a few hours.
  • It may take up to 30 nights to get used to sleeping on the JoyBed mattress.

Customer Reviews of the JoyBed Mattress

When the bed arrives, it's rather primitive looking--super plain. BUT it is what it says it is--nontoxic, organic, etc. Healthy bed. Just one problem, even though I was looking for a firm bed, this was too firm. I wanted to return it, but customer service offered to send a topper for me to try out. The topper seems to be just what it needed. Britty
Hoped it would live up to the promise and it did. Supportive but not too hard. No chemical smell! I was prepared to spend a couple thousand but found this and didn't have too. David
I'm a back sleeper and this mattress is great for me. My back is so well supported and I no longer have any back pain. Worth every penny! Evelyn

JoyBed Mattress FAQs

How does the 120-night trial work?

Simple. For 120 nights you get to sleep on a JoyBed mattress risk-free. If at any time during that trial period you decide the mattress is not for you, simply contact the customer support team at JoyBed to initiate a return and receive a full refund.

Is the JoyBed organic?

Not entirely. While to cover is 100% organic, the materials under the hood are naturally sourced but not completely organic. A 100% organic mattress can be very expensive so JoyBed uses the highest quality non-organic materials to keep their mattress at an affordable price point. However, the materials used to make the JoyBed meet some of the most rigorous standards and are completely recyclable.

Does the JoyBed have a break-in period?

It may take your body some time to adjust to sleeping on a new mattress, especially if this is your first memory foam mattress. Generally, within 30 days you should be adjusted to your new mattress.

Can I can finance my JoyBed mattress?

Yes. There are 3 ways you can finance your JoyBed mattress:

  • Paypal Financing – At checkout select the Paypal payment option, then choose Paypal Credit—6 months and no Interest if paid in full.
  • Synchrony Financing – There are longer financing options available over the phone, just call in to learn more at 877-601-7035.
