Layla’s standout features are its dual-sided firmness options and copper-infused foam. Essentially, you’re getting two beds for the price of one as each side has a different firmness and feel. In our review, check out how this bed scored in our lab tests and evaluations, read some product specs, and allow us to answer your FAQs.
After 1,200+ hours of testing countless mattresses on the market, we’ve finely honed our evaluation process to assess the top 14 criteria that mattress shoppers want to know about. We combine methodical testing with in-depth interviews to arrive at our scores, and put our full confidence in the results.

A bed with good motion isolation is a must for couples and light sleepers. Memory foam is one of the best mattress materials for reducing motion transfer. Layla’s memory foam layers proved reliable in this category. We gave both sides 8.5/10 for motion transfer.
Our mattress testers evaluate motion transfer with the wine test, which you’ve probably seen in mattress commercials. We position a full glass of red wine on one side of the mattress and our tester on the other. On the Layla, the wine barely moved and the glass stayed upright (phew!). Side note: If you like red wine in bed, use a waterproof mattress protector to prevent stains.
Edge support on memory foam mattresses is a big bonus since foam tends to collapse under weight. The Layla scored exceptionally well for edge support during our lab tests (9/10). The key is the extra firm base support foam. This dense core layer stretches across the entire mattress surface, so instead of rolling off the side of the bed, our testers stayed fully supported and balanced.
Personally, I love the feel of memory foam, but get really hot when I sleep on it. The Layla sleeps cooler than other memory foam mattress brands we’ve tested, but you still may find yourself kicking off a thick quilt or down comforter, particularly on the softer side.
We gave Layla 7.5/10 in our cooling evaluation because the construction gives a nod to cooling technologies, but still sleeps a tad bit warm. Layla’s first line of defense against heat retention is the THERMOgel cooling agent woven into the cover. It doesn’t have the cool-on-contact feel we’ve experienced with some other sleep products, but the gel does prevent overheating during the first 20 minutes on the mattress.
Next, the top comfort layers of foam are infused with copper particles. Copper is high in thermal conductivity, which is a fancy way of saying that it transfers heat away from your body. The copper took the edge off of heat build-up, but I’d still recommend a latex foam mattress or cooling sheets for those who tend to sleep especially hot.
Lastly, the support layer for the soft side of the Layla is convoluted foam. It’s molded with waves on the surface that make it look like an egg carton. This is meant to improve airflow under the thicker foam layer on the plush side.
Layla’s dual-sided construction allows for 2 distinct firmness levels. The medium-soft side feels pretty plush. We registered it at 4/10 on the firmness scale. This side is 3” deep with an additional soft 2” support foam layer. I don’t like to sink too far into my mattress because it moves my spine out of alignment, and Layla’s softer top layer is made of high-density foam that prevents too much sinkage.
The firmer side registers at 7/10 on the firmness scale. The top foam layer on this side is significantly shallower than the soft side. It’s only 1” deep, which provides enough depth to contour around the curves of your back while keeping you on the mattress surface.
As a combination sleeper, I prefer the soft side of the Layla. I usually wake up on my side, and found that the 3” of comfort foam did a great job of snuggly contouring around my pressure points, so side sleepers should love this side. My shoulders and hips get the most achy on firm mattress surfaces, and they did just fine.
Layla’s medium-firm side enables back sleepers and stomach sleepers to get enough cushion without losing the support required for those sleeping positions. I preferred this side while on my back. It didn’t give me quite enough cushion on my side or stomach, but it’s soft enough to support stomach sleepers who like a firm mattress.
As I mentioned before, the Layla incorporates 3 key temperature regulating features: cooling gel in the mattress cover, heat transferring copper in the comfort foam, and breathable convoluted foam in the support layer on the soft side.
As a general rule, memory foam beds are best for those with small to average body types. If you weigh more than 230lbs, you may find yourself sinking too far into the mattress. There are lots of beds designed specially for heavier sleepers. If you’re keen to sleep on memory foam, try a hybrid mattress with a memory foam topper or even the Layla Hybrid mattress.
The Layla is also a good mattress for those with broad shoulders or hips. The combined 5” of plush foam on the medium-soft side enable wider curves to sink deep into the foam without compromising spinal alignment.
Layla recommends a platform bed or box spring and bed frame for their memory foam mattress. If you do use a platform bed, make sure the wooden slats are max 3” apart or else the mattress won’t get the support it needs.
You can also place the Layla on a solid foundation, adjustable bed, or the floor. Layla doesn’t recommend the floor, though, because it hampers airflow beneath the mattress.

Overall, the unboxing experience was simple and easy, so we gave Layla 9/10 for set up. The mattress arrived compressed, rolled, and wrapped in plastic—all inside a cardboard box.
The setup process was quick. We were able to pull the compressed mattress out of the box with 2 people, but 1 person could manage for a smaller sized mattress. After we unrolled the mattress onto our foundation, it took a couple of minutes to fully inflate. Make sure not to slice the mattress when you cut it out of the plastic!
We did notice a very slight off-gassing odor, but it went away quickly. If you’re concerned about off-gassing, keep in mind that all of Layla’s foams are CertiPUR-US certified, meaning they passed rigorous tests that regulate toxic indoor air emissions. You can also air out the mattress for 24-48 hours before adding sheets, and make sure your bedroom is sufficiently ventilated.

Layla begins manufacturing your mattress after they receive your order. It can take 2-3 business days for your mattress to be ready to ship. Once it’s on the road, you’ll have it within 2-5 business days, depending on your location. A $125 shipping fee is added for deliveries in Alaska and Hawaii, and a $225 fee is added for shipments to Canada, otherwise shipping is free.
You can track your shipment beginning 3 days after placing your order. Layla will send you a tracking number via email. If you have any questions about your order, reach out to a customer care specialist on Layla’s website or email orders@laylasleep.com.
Layla gives you 120 nights—or roughly 4 months—to test out their mattress. During the sleep trial period, you can return your mattress at any time for a full refund. All they ask is that you sleep on the mattress for at least 2 weeks before making your decision. Sleep experts recommend trialing a new mattress for at least 30 days in order to give your body time to adjust.
Layla covers their original memory foam mattress for the entire lifetime of the mattress! To be eligible for the warranty, you must be the original owner and have bought your mattress directly from Layla or an authorized dealer, such as Amazon. Also, make sure to unbox your mattress within 2 weeks of delivery, or the warranty becomes void.
The warranty covers sagging deeper than 1”, cracks or splits in the memory foam, and split seams in the cover from normal use (i.e. not abusing or misusing your mattress). It does not cover subjective changes in comfort, cosmetic damages, customer-inflicted damages, or scents.
Layla’s customer care team is on the ball, which, frankly, is not something I can say about all mattress companies. You can connect with a customer service representative quickly on their website, and their team knows Layla’s products well. They also have several contacts you can use for various questions or concerns:
If Layla’s mattress isn’t working for you, reach out to the customer care team to see if they can resolve your issue. You can request a refund during the trial period by emailing your order number and the cause for your return to support@laylasleep.com. You have to sleep on the mattress for at least 2 weeks before initiating a return.
Layla will arrange for the used mattress to be picked up and donated to a local charity. You don’t need to re-box the mattress or anything: just take off your bedding. Once the mattress has been picked up, you’ll receive a full refund (minus shipping fees to AK, HI, and Canada).
Overall, we feel confident recommending the Layla mattress to most sleepers. The 2 firmness levels work for all sleep positions, couples benefit from the motion isolation and responsiveness, and the copper-infused foam improves muscle and joint recovery. Plus, it’s reasonably priced for a high-quality memory foam mattress.
The only shoppers we would redirect are those who are heavier than 230lbs and those who sleep extra hot. Consider instead a mattress designed for heavier body types and mattresses with advanced cooling technologies, like the Big Fig mattress.
The main difference between this Layla original mattress and the hybrid version is the feel and responsiveness with the edition of springs. Both the Layla and Layla Hybrid are flippable beds with a soft and a firm side, and they both incorporate copper into their top layers of foam. The Layla Hybrid is more responsive and has a bounce to it while the original Layla has better motion isolation.

After you receive your Layla mattress, you will have 120 nights to determine if you’d like to keep it. Layla recommends sleeping on the mattress for at least two weeks to help you get used to the materials.
If you decide that you don’t love your Layla mattress, they’ll pick it up from you and issue you a full refund. Layla will donate all returned mattresses to charity so there are no restocking fees.
Most customers in the lower 48 states can expect their new Layla mattress to arrive in 4-7 business days from the day they order with free shipping. *There is a $100 shipping fee for Alaska and Hawaii customers.
The Layla mattress comes compressed, rolled and boxed. You will simply unbox the mattress, unroll it on your foundation, and wait for it to expand. If you decide to change the firmness, you should unzip and remove the cover, flip the mattress over, then zip the cover back on.
It can take up to 30 days to fully break in your new mattress. During this time, your body will get used to the new mattress feel and the mattress will have time to fully take shape and provide all the benefits it was designed to offer. But the good news is you have plenty more than 30 days in your trial period!
You can! Layla has partnered with Affirm to offer financing over the course of 3, 6 or 12 months. Click on the Affirm button at checkout to learn more.
All foams used in the Layla mattress are CertiPUR-US certified; they are made without any ozone-depleters, PBDE flame retardants, VOC’s, mercury, lead and heavy metals, formaldehyde, or any prohibited phthalates.
The cover of the Layla mattress does completely zip off. Layla recommends dry cleaning the cover if it needs to be cleaned.
