Our In-Depth Level Sleep TriSupport™ Bed Review for 2024

Resident Home, the company behind mattresses like Nectar and DreamCloud, recently acquired a new brand: Level Sleep. The Level Sleep® mattress, which uses a unique TriSupport™ design, is already making waves.

The journey to TriSupport™ began 15 years ago when Roger Sramek set out to help people rest better and wake up with renewed energy. He figured if the human form is curved, why are people falling asleep on only one level of support? Their answer was the Level Sleep® mattress, which creates optimal spinal alignment, backed by clinical trials.

Is this unique mattress a good fit for you, though? Keep reading our in-depth review of the Level Sleep® mattress to find out.

Who We Recommend The Level Sleep® For:

  • Those with shoulder or hip pain – This product has been tested in clinical trials that support claims that this bed can help reduce pain and fatigue in over 55 percent of people who switch to this mattress.

  • Back and side sleepers – The TriSupport™ technology incorporated in this bed was designed for those who prefer to lie on their back or their side. The three zoned firmness areas work together to both support and relieve pressure from the shoulders, lumbar spine, and hips.

  • People who are open to something new – The zoned areas in this bed give it a unique feel that will take a night or so to settle into.

Who We Don’t Recommend The Level Sleep® For:

  • Stomach sleepers – The Level Sleep® was designed to benefit those that lie on either their back or their side. Instead, you’d be better off with a different mattress for stomach sleepers.
  • Those who prefer an innerspring – This mattress is made with several layers of foam and doesn’t include an innerspring layer. This means this bed will be less bouncy than hybrid or innerspring mattresses, which could be a drawback for those who prefer a mattress with more bounce.

First Impressions: Firmness & Feel

Firmness Scale: 2.5/10 (LEVELsoft) 5/10 (LEVELmedium) 7.5(LEVELfirm)

Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.

This Level Sleep® mattress is unique in that it includes three different levels of firmness in one product. Beneath the shoulders and head, the mattress is softer; beneath the low back and torso, the foam is firmer; and beneath the hips, the mattress has a medium level of firmness.

According to our Sleep Advisor Firmness Scale, in which 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest, we rate the different areas of the mattress as follows: LEVELsoft™ (beneath the shoulders) at a 2.5, LEVELmedium™ (under the hips) at a five, and LEVELfirm™ (supporting the back) scores at a 7.5.

How Does It Feel?

This bed comes compressed in a box, so you’ll have to wait about 48 hours after unwrapping it for it to decompress and off-gas. Once it has decompressed and you lie on the bed, you’ll feel that the durable polyester cover feels very soft and comfortable.

The bed itself feels responsive for a foam mattress, which will be helpful when changing positions at night.

The LEVELsoft™ and LEVELmedium™ zones gently cradle the shoulders and hips, while the LEVELfirm™ keeps the back supported.

What We Like About the Level Sleep®

  • It’s excellent for back pain – The three zoned support areas of this mattress are designed with back pain in mind. As a result, you should feel firmer support beneath your lower back area to ensure optimal alignment.

  • Great motion isolation – Since this mattress is made entirely with foam, it doesn’t have the same bounce that an innerspring mattress does. This means you probably won’t notice when your partner moves around on the other side of the bed at night.

  • The lifetime warranty – As long as the original owner has this mattress, Level Sleep will guarantee the quality of construction, materials, and durability of this mattress.

Our Level Sleep® Complaints

  • Not the best edge support – When you sit on the edge of this mattress, it does sink down, but you can feel the bottom base layer engaging against your weight. Lying on the side of the bed feels pretty supportive but not as supportive as in the center.
  • Doesn’t work for all sleepers – This bed is designed specifically for back and side sleepers, so stomach sleepers won’t feel as comfortable on it. Additionally, heavier sleepers might push down through the comfort layers and feel uncomfortable side-sleeping on this mattress.
  • Not a lot of bounce – Although you shouldn’t feel ‘stuck’ in this mattress, it won’t have the same level of bounce as a bed with coils. This may not be a great mattress for sex.

Testing the Level Sleep Mattress: How it Performed

When we tested Level Sleep® with TriSupport™ technology, there were specific features we were measuring so we could determine who we think is the best match for this product. These features include cooling, motion isolation, bounce, and edge support. During our testing, we also lie on the mattress in different sleeping positions to see how well the bed provides support and pressure relief in each posture. According to Level Sleep, this mattress doesn’t have an official weight limit. However, this doesn’t mean it will be the right mattress for all body types and sleep positions.

Side Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight side sleepers should feel comfortable on this bed, as their shoulder will be gently cradled by the softer foam toward the top of the mattress.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight side sleepers should get great pressure relief from this mattress, as well as excellent support in the center of the mattress.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Some heavier sleepers might push down through the softer areas of this mattress and find that their shoulder meets the firmer support layers. This would make side sleeping uncomfortable for those significantly over 230 pounds.

Back Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight back sleepers will benefit from the firmer foam beneath the lumbar area in this mattress, especially those with back pain.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight back sleepers should also feel a good amount of support in the lumbar area on this mattress.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – The center of this mattress (beneath the low back) is firm and durable enough to support heavier back sleepers. It should feel supportive and keep the spine properly aligned.

Stomach Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Some lightweight stomach sleepers might feel comfortable on this mattress, though Level Sleep advises stomach sleepers using this bed to scoot down so that the LEVELfirm™ is under their upper back and shoulders.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – To effectively sleep on your stomach on this mattress, you’d need to scoot down so that the firm level is under your upper back. For average-weight sleepers, this would mean too little support on the hips.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight stomach sleepers wouldn’t get enough support beneath their hips in order to sleep comfortably on this bed.

Pressure Relief & Pain

This bed was designed to reduce pain and pressure buildup by adding necessary lumbar support and targeted pressure relief. In fact, the Level Sleep® has been recommended by medical professionals across the country for those with joint, shoulder, hip, and back pain.

In addition to the bed’s zoned support, the top layer of foam is constructed for pressure relief, giving the bed a soft, cradling feeling on top.

Back Pain – The zoned support system of this mattress is made to target back pain, adding extra support for the lumbar area. This should be especially advantageous for back sleepers.
Hip Pain – The TriSupport™ design offers a nice medium firmness under the hip area, which provides enough support so that your hips won’t sink too far into the mattress but also a good amount of pressure relief. It should be excellent for side and back sleepers with hip pain.
Shoulder Pain – The mattress is softest beneath the shoulder area. This means side sleepers should feel a comfortable sinking-in feeling beneath their shoulders, relieving pressure buildup.

Support

The combination of soft, medium, and firm sections of this bed should keep side and back sleepers in proper spinal alignment all night long.

On your back, the LEVELsoft™ and LEVELmedium™ zones should gently cradle the shoulders and hips, while the LEVELfirm™ middle keeps your back from dipping down into the mattress.

On your side, your shoulders should sink comfortably into this area of the mattress, while the firm middle section keeps your spine supported. Your hips will also be able to sink, just enough into the mattress, so that your spine remains straight.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer can be important for those who share a bed with kids or a partner who tosses and turns at night. A bed with good motion isolation contains movement to one side of the mattress so you don’t get jostled awake.

The foams in this bed keep motion near its source, allowing very little movement to trickle across this bed’s surface. Both heavy and light movements are minimized by foams in both the performance and base layers. So the next time someone hops into bed, you should not feel a thing.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

The top layer of this mattress is made from a luxurious Enduroplush HR Foam, which was created to be breathable and pressure-relieving. This small detail makes this mattress cooler than many all-foam mattresses on the market that don’t have any temperature-regulating features. However, it is still an all-foam mattress so it will retain some heat.

Performance for Couples

As mentioned, this bed does an excellent job of isolating motion, which is great news for couples sharing a mattress, since they shouldn’t be bothered by their partner’s movements. However, some sexually-active couples may want a bed with more bounce than this more contouring mattress, such as a hybrid or latex mattress.

Construction: What’s Inside the Level Sleep®?

The Level Sleep® mattress comes shipped in a box that has four handles for convenient setup. The Recoveree stretch cover is a blended fabric made of polyester, cotton, and lycra. It conveniently zips off and is machine washable with warm water.

This 11-inch mattress provides a truly unique feel as it provides three zoned firmness areas that are specifically designed to support your pressure areas as needed.

  • The first layer is a 1-inch luxurious Enduroplush HR Foam created specifically for pressure relief and comfort.
  • The second layer consists of a 3-inch series of polyurethane foams that vary in firmness throughout the mattress These firmness levels include:
    • LEVELsoft™ is the softest of these three zones. This cushioning foam was designed to absorb the shoulders. The company claims that this should help reduce pain in your thoracic spine and shoulder areas.
    • LEVELfirm™ is the firmest foam in this mattress. This foam was constructed to support the lower back and side, with the intention to help fight back pain.
    • LEVELmedium™ this foam has a feel somewhere between the LEVELfirm™ and LEVELsoft™. This foam should do an excellent job of absorbing the hips while still providing enough support to keep the legs aligned with the rest of the body.
  • The base layer stands 7 inches tall and is constructed from a high-resilience polyurethane foam.

Unboxing & Off-Gassing

The Level Sleep® will arrive in a box and takes about 10-15 minutes to completely unwrap and unbox with the help of a friend. Like many mattresses made with foam, the Level Sleep® does have a strong chemical smell upon unboxing, so be sure to leave it in a well-ventilated room. The smell should dissipate within about 48 hours.

If you can, we recommend recruiting a friend’s help during the unboxing. Even though it is an all-foam mattress and is easy to set up (just place it on your bed’s platform and wait for it to decompress), a Queen size weighs over 70 pounds.

Certifications

  • CertiPUR-US® certified: The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

Noteworthy Updates:

  • According to their website, Level Sleep commissioned a 30-person sleep trial to test out their mattress. Results showed that the TriSupport™ allowed participants to: fall asleep more quickly, wake up with less pain and stiffness, and report more energy and sleep satisfaction.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the Level Sleep® mattress different?

Rather than a flat mattress, the Level Sleep® with TriSupport™ is designed to fit the curves of the human body in order to keep the spine in the best possible alignment. This means the mattress is softest beneath the shoulders, firmest beneath the low back, and medium-firm under the hips.

Does the Level Sleep® with TriSupport™ work if my spouse and I are two different sizes?

According to Level Sleep, as long as you and your partner are between 4 feet and 2 inches tall and 7 feet tall, the Level Sleep® zoning should work effectively for both of you.

How safe are the materials used in the Level Sleep® mattress?

All the foams used in Level Sleep® mattresses are CertiPUR-US® certified, which means they are free of PBDE flame retardants, ozone depleters, heavy metals, formaldehyde, VOCs, and phthalates.

Overall Summary

The Level Sleep® bed provides a pain-free experience that should leave you resting healthier and happier.

Side Sleepers

This mattress was designed for back and side sleepers, so it’s to be expected that it would do well here. Lightweight and average-weight side sleepers should sink just enough into the contouring foam, though significantly heavier side sleepers might need something firmer beneath their shoulder.

Back Sleepers

While sleeping on your back on the Level Sleep® mattress, your spine should remain in a comfortable, neutral alignment through the night. The firmer foam beneath your lower back and hips will prevent your spine from dipping down, and the softer foam beneath the shoulders should prevent any upper back or shoulder pain.

Stomach Sleepers

For stomach sleepers to get the benefits out of this mattress, Level Sleep advises them to move down the mattress so that their upper back and shoulders are supported by the firm section of foam. However, this can be inconvenient and might create a lack of support to the hips for average or heavyweight sleepers.

Combination Sleepers

Since this is an excellent bed for both back and side sleepers, it is a good fit for combination sleepers who switch between these two positions during the night. Not only will the zoned support keep the shoulders, hips, and low back well-supported in either position, but the foam is responsive, so switching positions should be easier.

Couples

For couples who value a night free of disturbances, this all-foam mattress is ideal. It has excellent motion isolation, meaning if your partner moves, you’re less likely to feel it. The edge support is pretty decent, but if you regularly like to spread out, we might recommend getting a larger size since it’s not as strong as other options out there.

Heavy Sleepers

This mattress should perform well for heavyweight back sleepers. On your back, the extra support beneath the low back and hips should keep your spine comfortable and aligned. On your side, though, the soft portion beneath the shoulder might be a little too soft to be supportive for significantly heavier bodies.

Lightweight Sleepers

Lighter-than-average sleepers should feel comfortable resting on this bed in most positions. Some lightweight sleepers may even be able to comfortably sleep on their stomachs on this bed if they scoot down so the firmer portion is below their upper back and shoulders.

Average Weight Sleepers

Many average-weight sleepers are an excellent match for this bed. Sleepers in this weight range (between 130-230 pounds) should press down into the soft top layer just enough to feel the benefits of the zoned support. Still, average-weight stomach sleepers might need a bed that is firmer overall.

Overall Value 4/5

The Level Sleep® is made with quality materials, includes zoned support to help eliminate pain and promote proper spinal alignment, and even comes with a lifetime warranty and a 365-night trial period. This is a superb value for the price.

Our Verdict

The Level Sleep® is an excellent mattress for those who struggle to fall asleep due to aches and pains. The company’s unique TriSupport™ construction works to reduce pain and pressure buildup by adding necessary lumbar support and targeted pressure relief.

We think this bed is a fantastic match for back and side sleepers, which are the key groups the mattress was made for. However, people who prefer to lie on their stomachs at night will probably prefer a different mattress choice. The bed also comes with great motion isolation for couples who don’t want to be easily disturbed by movement.
