Score Breakdown

Setup Test

It took us exactly two minutes and 15 seconds to unbox the Serenade mattress. This mattress was very heavy but it puffed to life instantly. In fact, it puffed to life so quickly it sprung off the bed frame! It had a slight odor when it was first opened but it was not a chemical smell. Most likely the odor comes from the all-natural materials in the mattress. One sleep subject described commented they thought the smell was pleasant.

A queen size mattress weighs approximately 130 lbs so you will definitely need some additional manpower to get your mattress set up.

So for our setup test, the Serenade gets a 7 out of 10.

Motion Transfer Test

Motion transfer is just a fancy way of saying how much movement you feel if your partner is moving around. You want this to be pretty minimal.

Part A – The Humans

The Mattress Advisor motion transfer test is a two-part test. We start by asking both sleep subjects to lie on the bed, blindfolded, and rate on a scale from one to ten how much movement they felt when their partner was moving around with 10 being no movement at all.

While our sleep subjects were testing motion transfer on the Serenade, they noticed they barely felt their partner climb in and out of the bed but could feel them moving when lying next to them. They believed the latter was more important, so for the first part of our motion transfer test, they gave the Serenade a 7.75.

Part B – The Wine Test

Next, comes our wine test. This is a great visual indicator of how much motion is being transferred from one side of the bed to another.

We had one of our sleep subjects lie down and roll back a forth a few times. We then took a look at how much the wine inside of the glass moved.

In contrast to our human test, the glass of wine was very still while on the Serenade, so we gave it a 9 for this part of the motion transfer test.

So for a total motion transfer score, the Serenade gets an 8.4 out of 10.

Edge Support Test

When choosing a mattress, you may not think to consider how much support the edge provides. But if you find yourself sleeping on the edge of your bed or use the end to get ready in the morning, you should definitely consider the edge support.

The Mattress Advisor edge support test is a two-part test.

Part A – The Shoe Test

To start, we asked our sleep subjects to sit on the edge of the bed to tie their shoes. They rated this task on a scale from one to ten, with 10 being “extremely easy, with exceptional edge support.”

Our testers thought the edge of the Serenade was more supportive than the average mattress. They felt their weight being cradle while sitting on the end of the bed. So for the shoe test, they gave this mattress an 8.5.

Part B – The Side Test

Next, we had our sleep subjects lie on the edge of the bed in each sleeping position, side, stomach and back, to see if they could sleep comfortably in that section of the bed.

Once again, they felt the edge of the Serenade to be safe and supportive. They felt they could easily, and comfortably, sleep on the edge of this mattress if their sleeping partner was hogging the middle of the bed (but let’s hope that doesn’t happen). They once again gave the Serenade an 8.5.

Meaning the Serenade gets a total score of 8.5 out of 10 for edge support.

Pressure Relief Test

When shopping for a mattress, you’ll want to find something that puts minimal pressure on your hips, thighs, and shoulders. This is especially important for athletes when it comes to joint pain. Let’s take a look at how well the Zinus Green Tea mattress provides pressure relief.

We measure pressure relief by using a pressure mapping film that shows areas of high pressure. Here’s what you need to know: the cool spots are good and the warms spots are bad. The warmer the color, the more pressure is being placed on that area of the body.

When on the Serenade, we noticed areas of high pressure in the shoulders of one sleep subject and some indications of potential pressure in the hips.

So we scored it an 8 out of 10 for pressure relief.

Spine Alignment Test

Did you know your sleeping posture is just as important as your posture when you are awake?  For every mattress we test, we take a look at how well it keeps your spine in a straight line.

We took a close up of both of our sleep subjects backs to see the alignment. You’ll want to see a straight line from the neck all the way to the tailbone.

The spine’s of our sleep subjects were in great shape on the Serenade mattress.

We gave it an 8.75 for the spine alignment test.

Responsiveness Test

When it comes to getting comfortable on your mattress, responsiveness becomes very important. Responsiveness is just a fancy way of saying how well the mattress adjusts or responds to your sleeping positions while you sleep.

We had our mattress testers lie in each sleeping position, side, stomach, and back. As they changed positions and got settled in, we asked them to rate on a scale from one to ten how quickly and easily the mattress responded to their movement.

The Serenade mattress did a decent job responding to changes in body position; however, our testers noted it took some time to get settled into the mattress when on their side.

So we scored the Serenade an 8 out of 10 for responsiveness.

Does the Naturepedic mattress have a break-in period?

It may take your body some time to adjust to sleeping on a new mattress, especially if this is a new type of mattress that you’re not used it. Generally, within 30 days you should be adjusted to your new mattress.

What's the difference between firm and cushion firm?

As a company, Naturepedic offers four firmness levels across all their mattress models: Firm, Cushion Firm, Plush, and Ultra Plush. The Serenade comes in Firm and Cushion Firm. According to Naturepedic, the majority of their customers prefer Cushion Firm, which is on the firm with a subtle amount of plushness for comfort and pressure point relief.
