Pros and Cons

✅ Pros

  • Cooling: This mattress uses Talalay latex layers and breathable cotton covers to keep moisture away and coolness to stay.
  • Spinal Alignment: The patented HDMax™️ Tri-Zone™️ Support Coils used in the Natural mattress helps ensure a great spinal alignment.
  • Pressure Relief: The Nolah Natural’s hybrid construction allows it to fully cushion major pressure areas, like the hips and shoulders.

❌ Cons

  • Motion Transfer: The Nolah Natural mattress didn’t do so well in our motion test, meaning that individuals that sleep with a significant other or pet may have their sleep disturbed when their partner shifts positions.
  • Edge Support: We felt this mattress had average edge support which isn’t something to be too worried about unless you need extra help getting out of bed or you like to sleep on the edge.

Motion Transfer

To see if a mattress has good motion transfer, we placed a glass of water on top of the mattress and dropped a 10 lb ball. As you can see, the cup shifted slightly when the ball landed. Those that sleep with a partner or pet may want to consider a mattress with a higher motion isolation capability like the DreamCloud Premier since, with the Nolah Natural, they likely will hear their partner when they shift positions or get out of bed.

Pressure Relief

One of the top benefits of Nolah’s decision to use latex layers, as opposed to memory foam, in the Natural mattress is that it cushions your muscles better and avoids giving you a sinking feeling. This mattress scored high in our pressure relief test since it uses individually wrapped coils to provide targeted support in high-pressure areas, like the hips and shoulders.

Edge Support

While the Nolah Natural mattress is a pretty firm bed, it failed to have a strong edge support. During my test in the mattress lab, there was a significant dip when I sat on the end of the bed. I also felt a slight give when lying near the edge, but nothing too major. This mattress likely will have enough edge support for the average sleeper, but if you’re someone who likes to take advantage of every inch of your bed, you may want to order a size up or consider a mattress with a higher score in this area, like the WinkBed.

Responsiveness

Responsiveness assesses how well a mattress allows you to change positions. We gave the Nolah Natural an 8.5/10 in this category since we felt it allowed us to transition fairly easily but not as well as some mattresses we have tested. If you typically switch your positions through the night, you may want to consider one of our best mattresses for combination sleepers.

Product Details

Discover some other important details about the Nolah Natural, like how much weight it can support, to help you make your purchasing decision.

How Firm is the Nolah Natural?

Like many other hybrid mattresses, the Nolah Natural falls right in the middle on the firmness scale. We would say this mattress is a 5.5/10 due to the comfort from the Talalay latex and support of the coil system. When lying on the mattress we felt our body sink in initially but felt a supportive firm layer underneath.

Does the Nolah Natural Sleep Cool?

The Nolah Natural sleeps pretty cool thanks to its Talalay latex layers. This means that you don’t have to sweat, even in the dead of summer. You can be cool as a cucumber since the mattress has a breathable cotton cover to wick away moisture. The Nolah Natural also uses hole-punched latex foam and pocketed coils to enhance airflow.

What Sleeping Positions Does It Work For?

Since the Nolah Natural mattress is a medium-firm mattress, we feel it would be perfect for all types of sleeping positions. That being said, it may not be best for heavier stomach sleepers who need a firmer mattress to fully support them. Some stomach sleepers may also find the Natural to be too soft for them.

How Much Weight Does the Nolah Natural Mattress Support?

The Nolah Natural mattress supports up to 700 lbs total, with 350 lbs on each side. The smaller models support 350 lbs. Nolah doesn’t recommend the Natural mattress for those weighing over 190 lbs due to its thicker and more durable support layers. Heavier sleepers can also cause the mattress to soften faster. Those looking for a hybrid mattress that can hold more weight may want to consider the Saatva HD.

What Foundations or Bed Frames are Compatible?

The Nolah Natural Mattress is compatible with any flat surface. This includes box springs, platforms, foundations, and adjustable bases. You can also place it on slatted bases with slats no more than 4” apart.

Nolah Natural Mattress Materials

As a hybrid mattress, the Nolah Natural consists of a combination of natural Talalay latex and a patented HDMax™️ Tri-Zone™️ Support Coil System. Talalay latex is a hypoallergenic, eco-friendly material that provides pressure relief and maximum breathability.

Nolah Natural Layers
  1. Organic Cotton Cover: A Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified organic cotton cover wraps the top of the Nolah Natural, providing a durable, cooling surface.
  2. Organic Wool Layer: This layer uses GOTS organic wool fibers to act as a natural fire barrier and provide cooling benefits.
  3. Talalay Latex Comfort Layer (2”): The Nolah Natural uses natural Talalay latex to provide optimal comfort relief to joints and common pain points.
  4. Talalay Latex Transition Level (1”): Another layer of natural Talalay latex ensures a deep full-body support.
  5. HDMax™️ Tri-Zone™️ Support Coil System (8”): Nolah patented their very own HDMax™️ Tri-Zone™️ Support Coil System to provide excellent support and comfort.
  6. Organic Wool and Cotton Layer: The bottom layer supports the coil system to increase the mattress’ overall durability and stability.
  7. Organic Cotton Bottom Cover: The Nolah Natural sits in a GOTS-certified organic cotton fabric cover, which helps lengthen its lifespan.

What’s Unboxing Like?

The Nolah Natural comes compressed in an eco-friendly box. You may want to get assistance lifting to the room you plan to place it since the larger models can weigh over 100 lbs.

Remove the mattress from the box and take off the outer wrapping to let it expand to its full shape. To get rid of the off-gassing smell, Nolah recommends letting the mattress air out for a few hours without any sheets on it. They also offer to remove your old mattress and set up your new one for an additional fee. The Nolah Natural mattress comes with handles on both sides to make moving it from one location to another easier.

Is the Nolah Natural Right for You?

Now that you’ve read our review, it’s time to decide if the Nolah Natural is right for you. While this comes down to personal preference, we believe that this mattress would be especially great for those that sleep hot since it has excellent cooling technology. The mattress also scored well in our pressure relief test, making it a great choice for those with neck or back pain.

If you are someone who likes to spread out on your mattress, you may want to consider a mattress with better edge support so you don’t feel like you’re falling off the bed. Heavier sleepers may also prefer a slightly firmer mattress that offers them more support. Overall, the mattress is great for all sleeping positions and scored above average in all 14 categories.

Talalay latex is a natural latex made from rubber trees. Its breathable design helps create a temperature-neutral surface at night. Other benefits include providing excellent pressure relief, using environmentally friendly ingredients, and being hypoallergenic.

Since latex allergy reactions typically occur from direct contact of latex materials the Nolah Natural will likely be ok for those with latex allergies since it comes wrapped in a cotton cover. However, if you are worried about having a reaction, consult with your healthcare provider before purchasing the Nolah Natural mattress. You also can consider the Nolah Original, which uses foam instead of latex.
