In essence: The PerformaSleep mattress is a cooling all-foam mattress designed specifically for athletes and expedited recovery. It excelled across the board in our mattress lab, earning high scores in pressure relief, spine alignment, cooling, responsiveness, and more. And with a medium-firm feel, it works well for every sleeping position.
Who is it Best For?
|PerformaSleep is best for:||PerformaSleep may not be best for:|
The PerformaSleep mattress was designed to support optimal recovery. Because athletes tend to sleep hot and need extra cushion and support for a comfortable night’s sleep, this mattress is cool, supportive, and pressure-relieving. See how the PerformaSleep performed at the Mattress Advisor lab and what this tells us about who is—and isn’t—a good fit for this bed.
What we loved about it:
- The PerformaSleep foam mattress is designed with recovery in mind. It’s even been tested and approved by a number of elite athletes, including Lauren Fisher, professional CrossFit athlete. As such, we consider it a top mattress for athletes.
- The CopperCool technology infused into the top layer of the PerformaSleep dissipates excess body heat and eliminates moisture. And with copper’s antimicrobial and antiviral properties, it keeps your mattress clean and your body healthy.
- The PerformaSleep mattress earned an 8/10 or higher in every one of our tests that examines comfort and sleep experience, including things like pressure relief, cooling properties, and spinal alignment. It’s an all-around excellent mattress.

PerformaSleep Pros and Cons
- Healthy Spine Alignment: Our sleep testers had nearly-perfect spinal alignment on the PerformaSleep. Proper body alignment when sleeping can help relieve body aches and pains.
- Great Responsiveness: The PerformaSleep is easy to move around on. You won’t feel like you’ve sunk into quicksand like you might on traditional memory foam mattresses.
- Cooling Abilities: Thanks to copper-and-gel-infused foam, the PerformaSleep doesn’t trap excess body heat.
- Good for Couples: The PerformaSleep’s motion-dampening foam helps you sleep soundly when your sleep partner moves while sturdy edges allow you and your partner to spread out. The result is an excellent mattress for those who share the bed.
- Social Impact: PerformaSleep isn’t very socially involved outside of donating returned mattresses.
- Off-Gassing: While we found the PerformaSleep to have very little odor when compared to most recently-unboxed all-foam beds, it still had a slight off-gassing odor. This can take up to a few days to dissipate fully.
Have you ever woken up hot and sweaty? This signals that your body is struggling with temperature regulation, which is essential to entering deep, restorative sleep. Achieving high-quality sleep is necessary for muscle recovery, and with it, athletic performance. For most sleepers, particularly athletes, a mattress must sleep cool in order to get the best sleep possible.
PerformaSleep didn’t take any shortcuts when engineering a cooling all-foam mattress. In the top layer they utilize naturally-cool copper and gel foam, and the all-natural Tencel cover is an ultra-breathable fabric. With the addition of open-cell foam, these cooling technologies earned the PerformaSleep bed a 9/10 for its cooling abilities.
Back pain can quickly ruin your workout routine. That’s why athletes need a mattress that keeps their back in a healthy, neutral alignment. We test the spine alignment abilities of a mattress by having our sleep testers lie on their sides and we take a look at their spines. What we want to see is a straight line along the entire length of the spine.
Take a look at RJ and Asha’s spines when lying on the PerformaSleep mattress. Both have almost perfectly straight spines, earning the PerformaSleep an impressive 9/10 for spine alignment.
Unlike many bed-in-a-box mattress brands, PerformaSleep doesn’t have a social mission on their website. They also don’t call out any employee volunteer work, donations, or other social involvement. While this won’t influence your sleeping experience, some people may prefer to go with a company with a greater social impact.
The PerformaSleep is a medium-firm mattress. With contouring foam that’s both pressure-relieving and supportive, this bed has the desired feel of the average person.
What Sleeping Positions is it Good For?
The PerformaSleep is an excellent mattress for side, back, and stomach sleepers. Side sleepers get the pressure point relief that they need while both stomach and back sleepers are well-served by that combination of cushion and reliable support.
The PerformaSleep mattress is designed to support optimal temperature regulation. Thanks to generous airflow paired with cooling gel and copper, most hot sleepers can find relief on the PerformaSleep.
The PerformaSleep mattress doesn’t have a set weight limit. It’s designed with optimal support in mind thanks to generous comfort layers and supportive high-density base foam. However, plus-size people may do best on a mattress with innerspring coils as these are incredibly durable and supportive.
You may lay the PerformaSleep on any firm, flat surface. This includes the traditional frame and box spring, a frame with slats, an adjustable bed frame, a platform bed, a bunkie board, or the floor.
Inside the Mattress
The PerformaSleep is made from three foam layers designed for deep sleep and recovery. Here’s a breakdown of what’s inside.
- Mattress Cover: Natural Tencel fibers support airflow.
- Comfort Layer (2”): A soft polyfoam with CopperCool gel promotes a cool night’s sleep and aids in recovery.
- Enersorb Layer (2”): Made from PerformaSleep’s proprietary Ensorb foam, a firm yet pressure-relieving material that’s more responsive than memory foam.
- PerformaBase Layer (7”): A sturdy base layer of high-density foam for added support.

Unboxing and Set-up
The PerformaSleep comes in a medium-sized box. It took two of us just under two minutes to unbox it, remove the plastic wrap, and set it up. There was a slight off-gassing odor, which is normal for mattresses with generous foam layers. It can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days for the odor to fade and for the mattress to fully decompress.

Is the PerformaSleep Right for You?
The PerformaSleep mattress was designed to support speedy recovery. From our in-house testing, we’ve found the PerformaSleep to live up to this reputation. The outstanding cooling technology, responsive feel, and motion isolation all work together to help you stay asleep, supporting the body’s natural healing abilities. And with good pressure relief and exceptional spinal alignment, the mattress cushions joints and helps ease aches and pains.
Because the PerformaSleep has a universal firmness that works for the average sleeper, it’s a good fit for every sleeping position. And thanks to ample high-density support foam, it also works well for most body shapes and sizes.
While there’s a lot of good things to say about this mattress, it’s not going to be the best fit for everyone. If you’re someone who wants the traditional hugging memory foam feel, you’d be better suited by a Tempur-Pedic mattress. And for those who want an even more supportive sleeping experience, a hybrid bed like the DreamCloud mattress is more likely what you’re looking for.
The PerformaSleep mattress stands out amongst other beds in the bed-in-a-box mattress industry because it’s designed for optimal recovery. It excels at sleeping cooler than most other foam mattresses and it does a great job of marrying both pressure relief and support. Both its firmness level and price point are around average for an online all-foam mattress. For other mattresses that excel at supporting athletes, check out our Molecule 1 mattress review and our Spartan mattress review.

Will a mattress protector hinder this bed’s ability to support recovery?
So long as you don’t feel hotter with the mattress protector, it’s unlikely to negatively influence your sleeping experience or physical recovery. In fact, a waterproof mattress protector is the only way to fully protect your new bed from spills, stains, or accidents.
Where is the PerformaSleep mattress made?
This mattress is manufactured in the USA.
Is the off-gassing odor harmful to my health?
No, it’s perfectly safe. PerformaSleep foams are CertiPUR-US certified, meaning they’re safe for you and the environment. However, some people may experience a headache if they unbox their new mattress in an enclosed area and don’t allow it to breathe before sleeping on it.
