The PerformaSleep mattress was designed to support optimal recovery. Because athletes tend to sleep hot and need extra cushion and support for a comfortable night’s sleep, this mattress is cool, supportive, and pressure-relieving. See how the PerformaSleep performed at the Mattress Advisor lab and what this tells us about who is—and isn’t—a good fit for this bed.
We score every mattress that we bring into our lab on a 14-point evaluation that includes functional and performance characteristics of the bed along with its social impact. Pay special attention to the categories that matter most to you.

Have you ever woken up hot and sweaty? This signals that your body is struggling with temperature regulation, which is essential to entering deep, restorative sleep. Achieving high-quality sleep is necessary for muscle recovery, and with it, athletic performance. For most sleepers, particularly athletes, a mattress must sleep cool in order to get the best sleep possible.
PerformaSleep didn’t take any shortcuts when engineering a cooling all-foam mattress. In the top layer they utilize naturally-cool copper and gel foam, and the all-natural Tencel cover is an ultra-breathable fabric. With the addition of open-cell foam, these cooling technologies earned the PerformaSleep bed a 9/10 for its cooling abilities.
Back pain can quickly ruin your workout routine. That’s why athletes need a mattress that keeps their back in a healthy, neutral alignment. We test the spine alignment abilities of a mattress by having our sleep testers lie on their sides and we take a look at their spines. What we want to see is a straight line along the entire length of the spine.
Take a look at RJ and Asha’s spines when lying on the PerformaSleep mattress. Both have almost perfectly straight spines, earning the PerformaSleep an impressive 9/10 for spine alignment.
Unlike many bed-in-a-box mattress brands, PerformaSleep doesn’t have a social mission on their website. They also don’t call out any employee volunteer work, donations, or other social involvement. While this won’t influence your sleeping experience, some people may prefer to go with a company with a greater social impact.
The PerformaSleep is an excellent mattress for side, back, and stomach sleepers. Side sleepers get the pressure point relief that they need while both stomach and back sleepers are well-served by that combination of cushion and reliable support.
The PerformaSleep mattress is designed to support optimal temperature regulation. Thanks to generous airflow paired with cooling gel and copper, most hot sleepers can find relief on the PerformaSleep.
The PerformaSleep mattress doesn’t have a set weight limit. It’s designed with optimal support in mind thanks to generous comfort layers and supportive high-density base foam. However, plus-size people may do best on a mattress with innerspring coils as these are incredibly durable and supportive.
You may lay the PerformaSleep on any firm, flat surface. This includes the traditional frame and box spring, a frame with slats, an adjustable bed frame, a platform bed, a bunkie board, or the floor.
The PerformaSleep is made from three foam layers designed for deep sleep and recovery. Here’s a breakdown of what’s inside.

The PerformaSleep comes in a medium-sized box. It took two of us just under two minutes to unbox it, remove the plastic wrap, and set it up. There was a slight off-gassing odor, which is normal for mattresses with generous foam layers. It can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days for the odor to fade and for the mattress to fully decompress.

The PerformaSleep mattress was designed to support speedy recovery. From our in-house testing, we’ve found the PerformaSleep to live up to this reputation. The outstanding cooling technology, responsive feel, and motion isolation all work together to help you stay asleep, supporting the body’s natural healing abilities. And with good pressure relief and exceptional spinal alignment, the mattress cushions joints and helps ease aches and pains.
Because the PerformaSleep has a universal firmness that works for the average sleeper, it’s a good fit for every sleeping position. And thanks to ample high-density support foam, it also works well for most body shapes and sizes.
While there’s a lot of good things to say about this mattress, it’s not going to be the best fit for everyone. If you’re someone who wants the traditional hugging memory foam feel, you’d be better suited by a Tempur-Pedic mattress. And for those who want an even more supportive sleeping experience, a hybrid bed like the DreamCloud mattress is more likely what you’re looking for.
The PerformaSleep mattress stands out amongst other beds in the bed-in-a-box mattress industry because it’s designed for optimal recovery. It excels at sleeping cooler than most other foam mattresses and it does a great job of marrying both pressure relief and support. Both its firmness level and price point are around average for an online all-foam mattress. For other mattresses that excel at supporting athletes, check out our Molecule 1 mattress review and our Spartan mattress review.
So long as you don’t feel hotter with the mattress protector, it’s unlikely to negatively influence your sleeping experience or physical recovery. In fact, a waterproof mattress protector is the only way to fully protect your new bed from spills, stains, or accidents.
This mattress is manufactured in the USA.
No, it’s perfectly safe. PerformaSleep foams are CertiPUR-US certified, meaning they’re safe for you and the environment. However, some people may experience a headache if they unbox their new mattress in an enclosed area and don’t allow it to breathe before sleeping on it.
