The gist of it: The Puffy Royal Hybrid is a luxury mattress that provides good breathability and great pressure relief. Side sleepers in particular should love this bed, and the lifetime warranty means that they never need to worry about going without it.

The Puffy Royal Hybrid excelled in quite a few areas, but none more so than it’s performance for side sleepers and the unbeatable service that the Puffy team provides. The mattress delivered a great level of relief for our shoulders and hips, two areas that side sleepers need cushioned. And the lifetime warranty that Puffy gives to every mattress customer is nearly unparalleled in the bed-in-a-box industry.

It is important to us that we run each mattress through an exhaustive series of tests, so that we can provide the most accurate assessments possible. The table below indicates how the Royal Hybrid performed on every one of these tests.

One of the areas where the Royal Hybrid was most successful was in Pressure Relief. Sensitive pressure points like shoulders and hips were sufficiently cushioned when we were on our sides, which is important if you hope to avoid morning aches. Take a look at the pressure maps below for a better sense of how this mattress performed. Green and blue are good signs, red is a bad sign.
It is very important for a mattress to align to your spine’s natural curve, both when you are on your side and on your stomach. Unfortunately, the Royal Hybrid missed the mark here. You can see in the photos below that our tester’s back was thrown slightly out of whack when she was on the mattress; too much time spent in this position can result in lower back pain.
Sleeping in the same bed as someone else can be a challenge at times, especially if that someone else is a particularly restless sleeper. If you are consistently woken up by your partner’s movements then it is important to invest in a bed that excels at motion isolation.
We found that the Royal Hybrid did a pretty good job with this. We were able to feel a slight disturbance from human movement, but as you can see in the video below, the wine didn’t spill!
Speaking of sleeping positions, let’s take a look at which ones the Royal Hybrid works well for.
Side sleepers: Because of its pressure relieving abilities, the Puffy Royal Hybrid is a solid choice for side sleepers, who need a considerable amount of support in their shoulders and hips.
Back sleepers: We think that most back sleepers should find that the Royal Hybrid has just the mattress feel that they need to get a good night’s sleep.
Stomach sleepers: Some may find that the Royal Hybrid is just a bit too soft for them, but we think the majority of stomach sleepers should be happy with it.
Combination sleepers: The Puffy Royal Hybrid has a very soft top layer of foam, which makes it quite comfy, but also somewhat difficult to move around on. Because it did not score well in responsiveness, we’d recommend that combination sleepers explore other options.
Hybrids tend to do a better job of circulating air than all-foam mattresses, and the Royal Hybrid is no exception. We certainly didn’t overheat while we were on the bed, but it wasn’t quite cool to the touch either. If you are in the market for a mattress that actively cools you down then check out our article on the best cooling mattresses for hot sleepers.
The Puffy Royal Hybrid can support up to 700 lbs, or 350 lbs per side, so most types of sleepers can use it. That said, heavier people may find that it is a bit too plush.
The Royal Hybrid can be used on any type of frame, from a box spring to an adjustable base.
Let’s take a dive inside the Royal Hybrid so you can get a better idea of what you’re sleeping on.

Like many online mattress companies, Puffy ships their products bed-in-a-box style, meaning they come compressed in a package that is much easier to handle than a mattress normally would be. The Royal Hybrid took us 2:20 to unbox and set up, and the off-gassing odor was normal.

The Puffy Royal Hybrid is delivered via FedEx and, as noted above, arrives compressed in a manageable sized box, so you should be able to set your new mattress up on your own, but you may need an extra pair of hands depending on how much weight you can carry. You will not be charged for shipping if you live in the contiguous United States, but Puffy does not offer white glove delivery, so you will need to dispose of your old mattress yourself.
Puffy offers their customers a 101-night sleep trial. Puffy only asks that you give the bed at least 14 nights before making a decision. If at any time after that you decide that the Royal Hybrid is not the best mattress for you then you can return it for a full refund.
Puffy is so confident in the durability of their mattresses that they provide customers with a lifetime warranty. If, while you are the owner of your mattress, you notice any defects that are a result of factory error rather than improper use then Puffy will either repair the defect or replace the mattress entirely.
The Puffy customer service team can be contacted via the live chat feature or the email form on their website, puffy.com. They can also be reached at support@puffy.com and 1 800-430-8380.
We have noticed that they have always been very responsive and informative.
You will get 101 nights to get to know your mattress before having to make a firm decision on whether or not it is right for you. If at any time you decide you want something different then you may return the Puffy for a full refund. They do ask, however, that you spend at least 30 nights sleeping on your mattress because it can take several weeks for you to adjust to the new sleeping surface.
If you are interested in a plush mattress that is easy to set up and that supports multiple sleep positions, then the Royal Hybrid may be a good choice for you. We found that it provided pressure relief, especially for our shoulders and hips. The real star of the show is the lifetime warranty, which is well above industry standard and ensures that if you love the Royal Hybrid then you can love it forever.
But it may not be for everybody. Because of its low scores in responsiveness and spine alignment, we can’t recommend this bed for combination sleepers or people who are prone to lower back pain.
Puffy Royal Hybrid vs The Original Puffy – The Original Puffy is a memory foam mattress with a medium-firm feel that provides great spine alignment, and the top comfort layer did a great job responding to our movements. As such, we’d recommend it over the Royal Hybrid for anyone who moves around a lot or has back pain. Read our full Puffy Mattress review.
Puffy Royal Hybrid vs The Puffy Lux Mattress – The Puffy Lux is a luxury mattress constructed of foam. We found it to be a comfortable mattress that did a slightly better job of expelling body heat that the Royal Hybrid. It also comes in at a lower price point. Read our full Puffy Lux Mattress review.
Puffy Royal Hybrid vs The Puffy Royal Mattress – The Puffy Royal is the foam version of the Puffy Royal Hybrid. The Royal scored slightly higher in pressure relief than the Royal Hybrid, but the Royal Hybrid scored much higher on the spinal alignment test. Read our full Puffy Royal Mattress review.
