Our Leesa Sapira Hybrid Bed Review for 2024 – Expert Tested

Update: The Leesa Hybrid is now known as the Leesa Sapira Hybrid. The bed’s design remains the same.

Leesa’s Sapira Hybrid is a versatile mattress that combines foam layers with pocket springs. As a brand, Leesa is known for making high-quality mattresses, and the Sapira Hybrid is no exception.

We tested this bed to get the best evaluation of its comfort, feel, support, and pressure relief. We also tested for motion isolation, edge support, and other factors new buyers typically look at.

In this review, we’ll go through all of our findings from our testers Emma and Mark to help you decide if the Leesa Sapira Hybrid should be your new mattress.

Pros
The Leesa Sapira Hybrid mattress has over 1,000 individually wrapped coils that do an amazing job at providing all-over body support.
We found this mattress to have good edge support thanks to the reinforced perimeter. The coils in this area are stronger to ensure you don’t slide off when sitting and sleeping near the edge.
We think the Sapira’s mid-range firmness should work great for many people, especially back sleepers.
Cons
Heavier side sleepers might experience some pressure buildup around the shoulders.
Although the Sapira Hybrid is generally breathable, it’s not a cooling mattress, which could be a downside if you’re a hot sleeper.
Leesa beds are not the cheapest out there, so this may not be ideal for those on a very tight budget.

Who We Recommend the Leesa Sapira Hybrid For:

  • Hybrid fans – Hybrids are excellent for those who want to combine all-foam and innerspring beds. This Leesa hybrid is highly comfortable and versatile, and it’s particularly great at support.
  • Back or stomach sleepers – We found this Leesa mattress to be a little firmer than average, which, in our opinion, should work great for most back and stomach sleepers.
  • Combination sleepers – The Sapira Hybrid is a responsive bed, which we think is excellent for combination sleepers. The extra bounce makes it easy to switch positions without feeling stuck.

Who We Don’t Recommend the Leesa Sapira Hybrid For:

  • All-foam fans – As mentioned, this is a hybrid, so you might not like it if you’re after an all-foam mattress. If you’re leaning toward an all-foam bed, then we suggest visiting our top memory foam mattresses for some more choices.
  • Extremely hot sleepers – If you usually struggle to find a cool spot on the mattress or live in a hot climate, we think you’re better off with a proper cooling mattress. In our opinion, the standard Sapira Hybrid is not cooling enough.
  • Heavier side sleepers – Mark from our team also tested the mattress. Weighing around 200 pounds, he noticed some pressure buildup in the shoulders when lying on his side, so this bed may not be the best choice for heavier side sleepers. For more options, take a look at our top beds for heavyweight people.

Customer Reviews of the Leesa Sapira Hybrid Mattress

On Leesa’s website, the Sapira Hybrid scores highly with a 4.4 out of 5 average customer rating. Most customers are happy with how comfortable and supportive it is. Many also mentioned its excellent quality compared to traditional innerspring beds. Those who didn’t like it mostly found it too firm or springy.

Testing the Leesa Sapira Hybrid Mattress

Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology

We do hands-on testing for mattresses to determine their performance and decide who they would be the best fit for. During our testing, we look at specific features like support, pressure relief, motion isolation, cooling, and more. We also make sure to test how a mattress feels in different sleeping positions and evaluate it for different weight groups.

Firmness & Feel

Firmness Scale: 6/10

Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your body type will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers might experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.

Mattress Firmness Level 6

At Sleep Advisor, we score mattress firmness on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest. After testing the Leesa Sapira Hybrid, we think it falls at 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale., which we consider to be a medium-firm feel.

How Does It Feel?

When you first lie on the Leesa Sapira Hybrid mattress, we noticed its slow-moving foam layers. The memory foam takes a few seconds to activate, and then you’ll experience that nice contouring. We think most sleepers should feel like they’re sleeping ‘on top of’ this bed, rather than ‘in’ it.

Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types

According to a Leesa online representative, the Sapira Hybrid mattress can handle up to 1,000 pounds in total or 500 pounds per side. Below, we’ll break down how we think the Sapira Hybrid fares in each position for lightweight sleepers (130 pounds or less), average-weight sleepers (130-230 pounds), and heavyweight sleepers (230+ pounds).

Side Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight side sleepers should like the slow-moving memory foam, but some might experience the Sapira Hybrid as a bit too firm in this position.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – Side sleepers weighing 130 to 230 pounds should sink only a bit deeper, which should be enough to get more pressure relief. We think this group is a good match for the Leesa Sapira Hybrid.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Our tester, Mark, weighs around 200 pounds and experienced pressure buildup while on his side. As such, we think those weighing even more than this will have more pressure in this position so we wouldn’t recommend it to these people.

Explore more mattresses for side sleepers.

Back Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight back sleepers should experience a gentle cradle around the lower back, although some might prefer an even softer bed.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – We think average-weight back sleepers will get the best balance of Sapira Hybrid’s support and pressure relief.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy sleepers might sink a bit deeper, but the overall firmness of the bed should ensure proper spine alignment in this position. However, some significantly heavier sleepers might prefer a firmer bed.

Browse our picks for the best mattresses for back sleepers.

Stomach Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight stomach sleepers should like how the Sapira Hybrid feels, especially since it’ll feel even firmer to them.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – We think this bed can work for many average-weight stomach sleepers, but this depends on their exact body weight. Those closer to 230 pounds might find their hips sinking too deeply, in which case we’d recommend a firmer bed.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy stomach sleepers might also benefit more from a firmer bed to ensure the hips are aligned with the rest of the body.

Discover our top picks for firm mattresses and best beds for stomach sleepers.

Pressure Relief

3.5/5

We’d say the Leesa Sapira Hybrid offers average pressure relief. This mattress has a medium-firm feel, which, in theory, should have that nice balance of pressure relief and support. However, based on our experience testing it for side sleepers (who often need pressure relief the most), we think it’s a bit limiting since average-weight people are the only ones who’d likely feel comfortable enough on it.

Is the Leesa Sapira Hybrid Mattress Good for Pain Relief?

We think the Sapira could be helpful in some cases, but this will depend on the type of pain and how you like to sleep.

Back Pain

We think the Sapira Hybrid can help alleviate back pain discomfort, especially for lighter to average-weight back and stomach sleepers. However, heavier folks could wind up exacerbating their pain on this model.

More: Best Mattress for Back Pain

Hip Pain

Hip pain is a common issue, and it can be especially concerning for side sleepers. In this case, the Leesa Sapira Hybrid might not be the best option because it’s likely too firm against the hips. If you do experience hip pain, explore the best mattresses for hip pain here.

Shoulder Pain

People with shoulder pain may not like the Sapira Hybrid, especially if they’re a lighter-weight or heavier side sleeper, because they might experience more pressure buildup that worsens their pain. Find beds for shoulder pain here.

Support

5/5

Overall, we think the Sapira Hybrid has a lot to offer when it comes to support. Most sleepers should feel well-supported on this mattress. In some cases, people weighing significantly more may want something more supportive, but in general, we find it to be a solid choice that can appeal to plenty of people.

Motion Isolation

4/5

The coils in this bed are naturally going to make it bouncier than all-foam beds. However, the Sapira Hybrid performs well in this category compared to other innerspring and hybrid beds. When we tested the Sapira Hybrid for motion isolation, we noticed very little movement transfer, so it’s safe to say this would be a good choice for couples and co-sleepers.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

3/5

Although breathable, the Leesa Sapira Hybrid doesn’t do much more than that for cooling. While the coils and cover help with breathability, that might not be enough for particularly hot sleepers who tend to sweat and overheat. In this case, we’d recommend the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid, which we rated a bit higher for cooling.

Bounce

4/5

Because it’s a hybrid, the Leesa Sapira Hybrid mattress has a good amount of bounce to it. However, the foams on top of the coils are dense and slow-moving, so you won’t get too much bounce on the surface of the bed. If you press into the foams, you’ll notice how slowly they come back to shape with no springiness at all. If you push further, you’ll get to the coils, in which case the mattress bounces back much quicker.

This level of bounce is good, though, because it helps with repositioning but not at the expense of motion isolation for co-sleepers.

Edge Support

4/5

This mattress has a reinforced perimeter, which means the coils around the edge of the bed are stronger. We noticed only a bit of sinkage when sitting on the edge of this hybrid, but lying here felt plenty secure. We think this makes the Leesa Sapira Hybrid a good match for couples because the edge support allows them to use the entire surface of the mattress.

Emma is testing edge support on Leesa Sapira hybrid

Performance for Couples

4.5/5

We think this mattress is worth considering for couples and co-sleepers due to all the categories it excelled at that would appeal to anyone sharing a bed. Couples usually appreciate good motion isolation, edge support, and bounce, all of which you can find in the Leesa Sapira Hybrid.

However, some couples might prefer more cooling if they usually sleep hot or live in a warm climate, which is the reason why it didn’t earn a perfect 5 out of 5 here.

Preference-Based Features

Moisture-Wicking Cover

Although the cover itself isn’t cool to the touch, it’s breathable and fresh, which gives this mattress a nice, crisp feel. The ultra-fine fibers of viscose and plant-based rayon give it moisture-wicking properties, which we think is excellent if you usually sweat when you sleep. Another plus is that the cover is removable and washable.

Handmade Construction

Leesa mattresses are handmade to order, which means your Sapira Hybrid is specifically made for you. Dimensions can vary up to 2 inches, but by the time your bed arrives, you’ll be the first one to sleep on it.

Made in the USA

All Leesa beds are made in the USA. Explore more mattresses made in the USA here.

Adjustable Base Compatible

The Leesa Sapira Hybrid works on all bed foundations, including an adjustable base for those who want a more customized sleep experience.

Construction: What’s Inside the Leesa Sapira Hybrid?

The Leesa Sapira Hybrid is a bed-in-a-box mattress. It has five layers, starting with a soft-knit cover made from polyester. The cover has that company’s signature stripes, giving this mattress a sleek and smooth finish.

The Sapira Hybrid is 11 inches tall.

Leesa Sapira Hybrid Mattress Construction
  • The top layer features 1.5 inches of cooling premium top foam. The material is dense and is meant to provide gentle cradling.
  • The comfort layer is also 1.5 inches tall and is constructed from memory foam.
  • The transition layer is an inch of core support foam acting as a transition between the comfort layers and the coils. It’s also meant to aid in motion isolation.
  • The support layer is a 6-inch Quick Response Layer. This unit features over 1,000 pocketed coils that go from one edge to the other for continuous support across the entire bed.
  • The base is another 1-inch layer of stabilizing foam.

Unboxing & Off-Gassing

Bed-in-a-box mattresses arrive at your doorstep and are easy to move around. However, the box can be a bit heavy, depending on the mattress size you get. We suggest you get a friend or family member to help you carry the box to the bedroom. Unboxing is easy and quick, but the mattress might take a few hours to decompress.

If you notice any off-gassing, know that they are rather normal for memory foam mattresses, especially those that come in a box.

Certifications

  • CertiPUR-US® certified – The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

Our Verdict

We think this bed is highly versatile for anyone looking for a hybrid mattress. The Leesa Sapira Hybrid offers excellent support, and it provides an ideal mix of bounce, edge support, and motion isolation for couples.

Although it’s not the most cooling bed, this might not be a dealbreaker if you’re not someone who worries about overheating at night. Even though the prices might be intimidating, we found it offers plenty of value for quality-seeking shoppers.

Overall, this hybrid mattress earned a score of 3.9 out of 5.
