Simmons Hybrid Review Highlights

Combination sleepers and budget-minded shoppers will find a lot to love in the Simmons Hybrid mattress. It is both incredibly affordable and incredibly firm – the firmness allows combo sleepers to move around with ease, free of motion-restricting sinkage, and the affordability is something that everyone can get behind. Though the average sleeper may find this mattress to be a bit too firm, for some people out there this is the bed they have been looking for all their lives.
What we love about the Simmons Hybrid:
- The Simmons Hybrid is affordable but not without high-quality materials and expert engineering.
- It is one of the firmest bed-in-a-box mattresses we have tested, so it might not be right for everyone but it was certainly designed with a specific set of preferences in mind.
- Because it is so firm, sagging is not likely to be an issue for this mattress.

⭐Total Score for the Simmons Hybrid Mattress: 7.9/10⭐
Simmons Hybrid Performance Breakdown
✅ Pros
- Since there isn’t a thick layer of foam over the innerspring coils, air can circulate more easily so the mattress stays cool.
- The edge support score is very high, owing to the extreme firmness of the bed.
- A motion separation layer helps isolate motion and keep your partner’s movements from disturbing you.
❌ Cons
- Depending on your preference, a very firm mattress may be your cup of tea. We find, however, that a medium-firm feel is more suitable for the average sleeper.
- The mattress did not do a good job of contouring to sensitive areas like shoulders and hips. Rather than sink in, they just rested on top of the firm surface – a bad quality for pressure relief.
- In general, the comfort level was low for us. It felt as though we were resting on top of the mattress rather than in it.
Cooling
One of the most appealing things about hybrid mattresses is their ability to circulate air, thus keeping themselves cooler than memory foam mattresses. Many hybrids integrate things like cooling beads and graphite infused so-and-so’s to achieve an even more active temperature regulating effect. The Simmons Hybrid does not have anything like that, but it doesn’t need it.
Since the Simmons is relatively thin and does not pad the springs with thick foam, air flow goes unimpeded. The heat that transfers from your body to the mattress would ordinarily get trapped in the foam, but in the Simmons the coils just circulate it back out.
Motion Transfer
Are you often woken up by the movements of your sleep partner? That could be because your mattress does not isolate motion well. A bed that scores highly in the motion transfer test absorbs movement so that it does not travel across the surface area.
In the case of the Simmons Hybrid, we found that a partner getting in and out of bed did somewhat disturb our sleep, but a partner tossing and turning did not bother us. Check out our motion transfer wine test to see how well the Simmons mattress isolates motion.
Pressure Relief
Sensitive pressure points like shoulders and hips require a very particular support system. The mattress needs to be soft enough that these heavier areas can sink in, but they can’t sink in so much that the spine gets thrown out of alignment. The Simmons Hybrid, having a firmness level of 7.5, did not allow our shoulders and hips to sink in at all. As you can see on the pressure map below, these areas are under a considerable amount of stress when on this bed, which can result in soreness after prolonged periods of usage.

Is the Simmons Hybrid firm?
The Simmons Hybrid Firm Mattress is, unsurprisingly, firm. It comes in at a firmness level of about 7.5 on our firmness scale. For reference, most mattresses we test are medium-firm and have a firmness score of around 6.

Will the simmons accommodate your sleep position?
Side
Because the Simmons Hybrid performed so poorly in our Pressure Relief test, we cannot recommend it for side sleepers, who should generally look for something that is medium-firm.
Back
Some back sleepers may enjoy the firmness of the Simmons Hybrid, which scored higher in pressure relief when on our backs than when on our sides. Still, you may prefer something a touch softer.
Stomach
Stomach sleepers need a fairly high level of firmness in their mattress so that their hips don’t sink too far in. The Simmons Hybrid will definitely keep your hips propped up, but again, some may find the firmness too extreme, especially against the soft area of their stomach.
Combination
Combination sleepers will definitely find a lot to love in the Simmons Hybrid. The springiness and high responsiveness all unrestricted movement; tossing, turning, and bouncing around is not a problem on this mattress.

Does the Simmons Hybrid Mattress Sleep Hot?
The lack of thick, insulating foam in the Simmons makes it easy for heat to move from your body into the mattress and back out. This makes for a cool nights sleep and will satisfy most sleepers prone to overheating.

How Much Weight Does the Simmons Hybrid Mattress Support?
The Simmons Hybrid has no weight limit. If you have a heavier body type, though, you may find that the 8” thickness does not provide a comfortable level of support.
What Foundations or Bed Frames Can be Used with Simmons Hybrid?
If you are using a platform with slats then there are some parameters that must be met. If the support system you intend to use has slats that are less than 2” apart then there must be a center support that runs along the system lengthwise, with one leg in the center of the frame.
If the system’s slats are more than 2” apart then you need to place a rigid surface between the mattress and the slats, and there also needs to be a leg in the center of the frame.
The Simmons Hybrid can be used on any foundation or box spring. Adjustable bases are also okay, but you must consult the owner’s manual for proper instruction.

What is the Simmons Hybrid Mattress Made of?
The Simmons Hybrid keeps it simple in the best possible way. There are no layers of gel memory foam, no cooling beads, and no high-density support foam. Just well-crafted innerspring technology and plush comfort foam. The result: You save money without sacrificing a good night’s sleep.

-
- Quilted Cover: Plush layer of hybrid foam that serves as the comfort layer
- Individually Wrapped Coils: Isolate motion and enable airflow, the base layer of coils provides the firmness and durability

Unboxing the simmons hybrid
Unboxing took about 1 minute and 36 seconds. The bed was packed pretty tightly so it was a bit challenging to get out, and there was a strong off-gassing odor.

Should You Buy the Simmons Hybrid Mattress?
In short: if you are after a very affordable, very firm mattress, then absolutely. Taking the cushiness of a foam mattress and blending it with the sturdiness of a spring mattress,tThe Simmons Hybrid provides excellent responsiveness, cooling, and motion isolation to budget shoppers who don’t mind a solid (literally) sleeping experience. With the queen size mattress costing just $349, this is a great option for young couples who like to toss and turn without disturbing each other.
If you prefer something soft, or even medium-firm, then this likely isn’t the mattress for you. Sleeping on such a solid surface can be uncomfortable for some people, and other people find it to be ideal. The Simmons Hybrid may not be right for you, but, if Goldilocks taught us nothing else, every bed is perfect for someone.
Compare the Simmons Hybrid
Though they have many different companies under their umbrella, Simmons mattress company is probably most closely associated with the Beautyrest. The Simmons Beautyrest mattresses are some of the most acclaimed beds of brick-and-mortar retail. The Beautyrest Black, the Beautyrest Hybrid, and the Beautyrest Silver all offer different sleep experiences at a much higher price than the Simmons Hybrid. Check out our Beautyrest comparison page is you are interested in a more traditional mattress buying experience.
If you have your heart set on an affordable bed-in-a-box, take a look at our best beds under $500 dollars page. You won’t find anything as firm as the Simmons, but the Tuft & Needle and Zinus Cooling Gel are good options for those who prefer something soft.
