Spartan Mattress Review Highlights

The Brooklyn Spartan by Brooklyn Bedding was designed to be the best mattress on the market for athletes and active people. It incorporates several advanced recovery features.
- FDA Approved Nanobionic Technology: Your body heat is absorbed by molecules in the cover fabric and transformed into far-infrared rays, which are then reflected back to your body in the form of energy. The energy from the infrared rays increases blood flow that promotes restorative sleep and faster recovery times.
- Customizable Firmness: You can choose a soft, medium, or firm Spartan mattress, depending on what is most comfortable for your sleeping position and body type.
- Spine Alignment: The Spartan earned a near-perfect score on our spine alignment test.
- Responsive: The foam layers in the Spartan are designed to adjust to your movements in real time.

Pros and Cons
✅ Pros
- A hyper-elastic TitanFlex foam comfort layer that pops back into place when you change position
- Far infrared ray technology in the mattress cover that reduces recovery time and enhances sleep quality
- Multiple firmness options to choose from
- Low maintenance bed-in-a-box delivery and easy setup
- A responsive coil system
- Made in the USA with high-quality materials
❌ Cons
- The foam layers may have a temporary off-gassing scent when the mattress is unboxed
- Motion-isolating properties are just average
- The price point may be a bit high for some shoppers
Motion Transfer
If you sleep with anyone other than yourself, you need a mattress that keeps motion transfer to a minimum. One of our favorite ways to showcase this factor visually is with the wine test. We place a glass of wine on the bed, roll around, and see what happens.
If the wine stays still, we give the mattress thumbs up for motion isolation. You’ll notice few disruptions across the mattress surface. When it’s rocky, that means you may feel your partner’s movements more frequently. The Spartan mattress earned average marks for motion transfer. Take a look at our video below to see how the wine held up on the Spartan.
Pressure Relief
A pressure mapper helps us determine how well a mattress will support your pressure points (i.e. shoulders and hips). The darker orange and red areas indicate areas of high pressure. The lighter blues and greens are positive signs that the mattress offers proper support in all the right places.
We saw almost no warm areas on our first sleep subject, but there was some red in the hips of sleep subject two. Overall, we gave the Spartan above average marks for pressure relief. Take a look at the pressure maps below.

Spine Alignment
It’s really important for your mattress to keep your spine properly aligned, otherwise you’ll wake up with a sore back and neck. During our spinal alignment test, our tester’s spines were nearly perfectly aligned—a sign of a good mattress for back pain. Check out our test subject’s straight spines below.

How Firm is the Spartan Mattress?
You can choose from soft, medium, and firm firmness levels. For optimum sleep quality, go with the firmness that best supports your sleeping position.

What Sleeping Positions does the Spartan Mattress Work For?
The Spartan can comfortably support any sleeping position. It’s the most comfortable for stomach sleepers, who get an ideal blend of pressure relief and support, but the soft option is pressure relieving enough for side sleepers and the firm option is supportive enough for back sleepers.

Is the Spartan Mattress good for Hot Sleepers?
Brooklyn Bedding pours all of their cooling tech into the Spartan mattress, and it delivers a noticeably cool sleep experience. The TitanCool foam keeps the mattress surface a comfortable neutral temperature, and the breathable coil system prevents the mattress from feeling congested with body heat.

How Much Weight Does the Spartan Mattress Support?
Brooklyn Bedding mattresses like the Spartan are designed to support a total of 950 lbs, or 475 lbs per side for two people sharing a queen-size bed or larger.
What Bed Frames or Foundations Can be Used?
The Spartan mattress can be used on most sturdy mattress foundations including platform bases, box springs, bunkie boards, or slatted bed frames.

What is the Spartan Mattress Made of?
The Spartan has a hybrid construction that pairs foam layers with over 1,000 individually wrapped coils.

- Nanobionic Technology Performance Cover: The whole mattress is covered with a durable Nanobionic re-3 performance fabric that supposedly converts your body heat into restorative waves of energy.
- 1.5’’ Copper Gel Energex Foam: This breathable top layer is infused with TitanCool phase-change molecules and antimicrobial copper. It targets sore muscles with contouring pressure point relief.
- 2’’ TitanFlex™ Hyperelastic Foam: The second layer of foam is designed to be highly responsive, meaning it immediately responds to your body each time you move.
- 1’’ Swirl Visco-Elastic Memory Foam: This transition memory foam layer contours to the shape of your body and enhances the cooling properties of this mattress.
- 8’’ Quantum Edge Pocketed Coils: The coil system consists of 1,189 individually wrapped pocket coils that aid in motion isolation and full-body support.
- 1’’ High-Density Base Foam: The base layer is made of high-density foam that increases durability and reinforces the whole mattress structure.

Unboxing the Spartan Mattress
It took us exactly two minutes to unbox the Spartan mattress. This mattress was on the heavier side, but it puffed up almost instantly. We noticed a slight odor when it was first opened, but it went away quickly. A queen size mattress weighs around 100lbs so you might want to recruit some help to set it up.

Mattress Delivery
Brooklyn Bedding ships all of their mattresses for free right from their factory warehouse in Phoenix, Arizona. (If you live in Alaska, Hawaii, or Canada you’ll need to pay an extra shipping fee) After up to 2 weeks of production time and 3-7 days in transit, your new mattress is delivered in a box to your doorstep. It will come compressed and rolled, so it needs a few minutes to fully inflate after unboxing.
Trial Period
Brooklyn Bedding offers a pretty standard trial period of 120 days. Most mattress companies only give customers 100 days, so you get almost an extra month of time with the mattress before making a final decision. You can also get the feel for Brooklyn Bedding mattresses if you’re near one of their showrooms.
Mattress Warranty
The Spartan mattress warranty lasts for 10 years and covers cracks in the mattress materials, indentations in the sleeping surface deeper than 1”, and breakdowns of the latex or polyfoam layers. Brooklyn Bedding will ship you a new mattress at no added cost if yours develops a covered defect.
Customer Service
The customer service team at Brooklyn Bedding is an absolute delight to work with. They are prompt and friendly with their responses. Returns
Brooklyn Bedding has a risk-free return policy. You get a full refund on returned mattresses within the trial period. Old mattresses are either donated to charity or recycled. To request a return, reach out to the customer support team. They’ll walk you through the return process. Keep in mind that if you buy your mattress from Amazon, it may be subject to their return policy.
Is the Brooklyn Spartan Mattress Right for You?
Invest in this mattress if you need fast recovery times, prefer a cool sleep experience, and are willing to pay a luxury price point. The Spartan suits all sleeping positions and body types, thanks to the multiple firmness options. Heavier individuals should choose the firm option, while lighter individuals and side sleepers should opt for the soft option.
The only people we think won’t like the Spartan are those who prefer the “slow sink” feel of traditional memory foam since this mattress is quite responsive.
The Spartan mattress has a lot of the same bells and whistles as other athlete-focused mattress brands like Bear, although it costs a bit more. On the flip side, it’s priced much lower than other high-tech cooling mattresses like the Tempur-breeze, but it doesn’t claim 3-8 degree temperature differences like Tempur-breeze does. It strikes a good balance between effectiveness and affordability.

Unfortunately no. The Spartan is only available in standard mattress sizes, but Brooklyn Bedding does offer custom and speciality sizes. Reach out to customer support with any questions, and be prepared that the pricing may differ from the list price on the mattress sales page.
Q.
How do I choose the right mattress firmness level?
A.
Generally, side sleepers and those who like to feel hugged by their mattress will enjoy the soft option. Combo and stomach sleepers get the right blend of cushion and support on the medium option. Back sleepers or those who need good lumbar support should choose the firm mattress, although we think it feels closer to medium-firm on the firmness scale.
