Spartan Mattress Review

Take a deep dive into our review of the Spartan mattress and see how it performed in our testing to help you determine if this could be the mattress for you.

Score Breakdown

Set-up Test

It took us exactly two minutes to unbox the Spartan mattress. This mattress was on the heavier side but it puffed to life instantly. It had a slight odor when it was first opened but it went away quickly. A queen size mattress weighs approximately 105 lbs so you might want to recruit some help to get this thing set up.

So for our setup test, the Spartan gets an 8 out of 10.

Motion Transfer Test

Motion transfer is just a fancy way of saying how much movement you feel if your partner is moving around. You want this to be pretty minimal.

Part A – The Humans

The Mattress Advisor motion transfer test is a two-part test. We start by asking both sleep subjects to lie on the bed, blindfolded, and rate on a scale from one to ten how much movement they felt when their partner was moving around with 10 being no movement at all.

While our sleep subjects were testing motion transfer on the Spartan, they noticed only a slight shake when their partner was moving around. So for the first part of our motion transfer test, they gave the Spartan an 8.

Part B – The Wine Test

Next, comes our wine test. This is a great visual indicator of how much motion is being transferred from one side of the bed to another.

We had one of our sleep subjects lie down and roll back a forth a few times. We then took a look at how much the wine inside of the glass moved.

That wine was pretty tipsy while on the Spartan, so we gave it a 7.5.

So for a total motion transfer score, the Spartan gets a 7.75 out of 10.

Edge Support Test

When choosing a mattress, you may not think to consider how much support the edge provides. But if you find yourself sleeping on the edge of your bed or use the end to get ready in the morning, you should definitely consider the edge support.

The Mattress Advisor edge support test is a two-part test.

Part A – The Shoe Test

To start, we asked our sleep subjects to sit on the edge of the bed to tie their shoes. They rated this task on a scale from one to ten, with 10 being “extremely easy, with exceptional edge support.”

Support on the end of the Spartan mattress was decent. Our testers said the edge felt “slick” creating a sliding feeling. This is often caused by the mattress cover. This issue is typically resolved once sheets are put on the bed. Otherwise, the edge provides good bounce back when you sit. So for the shoe test, the Spartan gets a 7.

Part B – The Side Test

Next, we had our sleep subjects lie on the edge of the bed in each sleeping position, side, stomach and back, to see if they could sleep comfortably in that section of the bed.

They found the Spartan comfortable (and decently safe) when on the edge. So for the edge support side test, this mattress scored an 8.25.

So the Spartan gets a total score of 9 out of 10 for edge support.

Pressure Relief Test

When shopping for a mattress, you’ll want to find something that puts minimal pressure on your hips, thighs and shoulders. This is especially important for athletes when it comes to joint pain. Let’s take a look at how well the Spartan mattress provides pressure relief.

We measure pressure relief by using a pressure mapping film that shows areas of high pressure. Here’s what you need to know: the cool spots are good and the warms spots are bad. The warmer the color, the more pressure is being placed on that area of the body.

We saw almost no warm areas on sleep subject one. However, there was some red in the hips of sleep subject two.

Sleep subject one's pressure mapping results.

Sleep subject two's pressure mapping results.

So for a total pressure relief score, the Spartan gets an 8 out of 10.

Spine Alignment Test

Did you know your sleeping posture is just as important as your posture when you are awake?  For every mattress we test, we take a look at how well it keeps your spine in a straight line.

We took a close up of both of our sleep subjects backs to see the alignment. You’ll want to see a straight line from the neck all the way to the tailbone.

These spines were nearly perfectly aligned.

For spine alignment, the Spartan gets a 9.5 out of 10.

Responsiveness Test

When it comes to getting comfortable on your mattress, responsiveness becomes very important. Responsiveness is just a fancy way of saying how well the mattress adjusts or responds to your sleeping positions while you sleep.

We had our mattress testers lie in each sleeping position, side, stomach and back. As they changed positions and got settled in, we asked them to rate on a scale from one to ten how quickly and easily the mattress responded to their movement.

The Spartan is a mattress that works to respond to its sleepers.

It scored a 9 out of 10 for responsiveness.

What Makes Spartan Different?

Designed with Athletes in Mind

From the materials used to the actual construction of this mattress, every stitch of the Spartan was created for the athletic community. With it’s pressure-point relief to body temp regulation, the Spartan helps athletic adults achieve the most restorative sleep possible.

Nanobionic® Technology

You are probably wondering what in the world “nanobionic” means. Glad you asked. Nanobionic® technology, registered by the FDA, works to convert body heat into waves of energy. Sounds crazy right? It’s actually really cool.

This technology is woven into the fibers used to make the Spartan mattress “smart” cover. Your body heat is absorbed by the molecules in the fabric and transformed into far-infrared rays, which are then reflected back to your body in the form of energy. The energy from the infrared rays increases blood flow which results in a more restorative sleep and aids in recovery, which makes sense because blood carries the nutrients our cells need to repair themselves. Increased blood flow = faster healing.

Customizable Firmness

The Spartan mattress is offered at three firmness levels—plush, medium and firm. Customers have the option to select the firmness level that best supports the sleeping style and body type.

What to watch out for

  • Be aware that your Spartan mattress may have a mild scent when you unbox it – this is normal and should go away within a few hours.
  • It may take up to 30 nights to get used to sleeping on your new Spartan mattress.

Customer Reviews of the Spartan Mattress

My Spartan mattress is a purchase I am extremely pleased with. I have chronic shoulder pain from multiple surgeries on both shoulders, and am a side sleeper. I've slept on a standard memory foam mattress for the past 8 years. Comfortable to fall asleep on, but I had to flip every 45 minutes because of pressure and pain. Though my Spartan will not cure my physical ailments, it affords me a great night sleep. I still have to turn a few times, but at worst, every 3 hours - resulting in very restful and rejuvenating sleep. Not really sure how much the nanobiotechnology really works since you are not in direct contact with the fabric, so won't hype that. This mattress is very cool to sleep on. Best 30 days of sleep I can remember. Michael B.
I don't understand how this bed supports me and also feels like a cloud? I usually wake up in a completely different position than I went to bed and I still wake up super comfy. I'd recommend this to anyone and everyone who depends on good sleep as much as me who works all the time and is on their feet. Andrea
The Spartan medium bed is extremely comfortable. I am 5’4” 140lb female and I can sleep on my back, side and stomach comfortably! I feel like the nanobionic aspect seems to work. Patricia S.
