For sleepers who weigh lighter than average or who want more cushioning in their mattress, a soft Tempur-Pedic bed could be a nice fit. On the other hand, heavier people and stomach sleepers may feel better accommodated on a Firm model.
How Does it Feel?
Tempur-Pedic mattresses are all made with memory foam, which means when you lie on them, you should experience more sinkage than you would feel with other types of beds. That sinkage should also help you feel less pressure while on the mattress. Along with sinkage and pressure relief, you should expect to feel minimal motion transfer, which is another quality that memory foam delivers well on.

Testing Tempur-Pedic Mattresses: How They Performed
When I test out mattresses, there are several factors that I look at. I analyze qualities like pressure relief, support, firmness, motion isolation, bounce, edge support, and cooling. I also assess how these beds rate for different sleep positions, as well as whether I think they’re ideal for couples.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
According to Tempur-Pedic, their mattresses don’t have a weight limit. However, they note that their foundations and adjustable bases do have weight limits. The weight limit for smaller foundations is 400 pounds and 800 pounds for Queen-size and up. For their adjustable bases, the weight limit (including the mattress) is 650 pounds.
Side Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lighter than average sleepers should love the sinkage from Tempur-Pedic beds but will likely feel most cozy on the company’s softer models.
- Average-Weight Sleepers – Since almost all Tempur-Pedic mattresses are available in a medium firmness, this brand is highly accommodating for average-weight side sleepers, who should experience pressure relief in the hips and shoulders without losing support.

Tempur-Pedic’s claim to fame is pressure relief, which is provided by their memory foam. As a result, each mattress should deliver solace from achy joints and muscles.
That being said, it’s important to select the appropriate mattress firmness for your sleep position and body weight so you can reap the most benefits. For instance, if you’re a side sleeper under 130 pounds and get a firm Tempur-Pedic bed, you might not experience the kind of pressure relief you want.
Back Pain – People with back pain should find good relief with Tempur-Pedic mattresses, particularly with the TEMPUR-Cloud® and TEMPUR-ProAdapt®. These beds should be able to keep the spine aligned to prevent back pain from worsening while soothing achiness through the conforming memory foam.

While Tempur-Pedic may be famous for pressure relief, they’re no slouch when it comes to support. In fact, these beds should provide most sleepers with the necessary balance of pressure relief and support required for optimal rest.
Perhaps the best thing about this company, however, is that they offer excellent customization to ensure you get the level of support you need. Along with multiple firmness levels in most of their mattresses, you can also choose from an all-foam or hybrid version in each collection. This is great because some sleepers find that hybrids give them more support than all-foam models.
Motion Transfer
Memory foam is often celebrated for its excellent pressure-relieving capabilities, but the truth is that it’s also ideal for curbing motion transfer. This means that movement on one side of the mattress shouldn’t be felt on the other side of the bed. For optimal motion isolation, though, I recommend the all-foam versions since the coils in hybrids could allow for some motion transfer.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
The great news for hot sleepers is that every Tempur-Pedic has some sort of cooling capability added to it. This is helpful because memory foam has a reputation for overheating. However, those who need extra cooling should love the TEMPUR-breeze° Collection, which focuses on enhanced cooling. Plus, getting a hybrid version should provide added airflow throughout the mattress.
Performance for Couples
Most Tempur-Pedic beds should fit couples well. There are several reasons for this. First, the brand offers many medium-firm choices, which is ideal for partners sharing a bed because it’s a more universally accommodating feel. Second, the motion isolation from the memory foam means one partner is less likely to disturb the other if they move around at night, particularly with the all-foam options.

Construction: What’s Inside Tempur-Pedic beds?
Tempur-Pedic beds are available as either all-foam or hybrid models, and with different mattress lines in their inventory, this means you get lots of variation in construction. For this section, I will focus on the construction of the all-foam version of the TEMPUR-Cloud® mattress.
The TEMPUR-Cloud® has a 10-inch high profile. At the top of this mattress is the 360° Stretch Cover. The purpose of this cover is to provide a moisture-wicking and breathable surface.
- Below the cover is the TEMPUR® Comfort Layer. This unit contains proprietary TEMPUR® material, which is made to be soft and responsive to provide a soft cushion at the top.
- The TEMPUR® Support Layer is slightly thicker and is a firmer version of the TEMPUR® foam. While the previous unit focuses on softness and cushioning, this layer should adapt to the sleeper and ensure they receive adequate pressure relief throughout their body.
- The final layer is a base foam that’s thicker than the top two units. This foam is where the sleeper should experience firm support to keep their body lifted and their spine well-aligned. Another benefit of the foam base is durability, helping to ensure this bed stands the test of time.
The main difference between the Medium and Medium Hybrid versions of the TEMPUR-Cloud® is the addition of coils. In the case of the Medium Hybrid model, the coil unit sits in between the TEMPUR® Support Layer and the Base.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
With the exception of the TEMPUR-Cloud®, the company includes complimentary White Glove Delivery, which means a team of professionals will deliver and set up your new bed for you. If you get the TEMPUR-Cloud®, the bed is rolled up in a bag and shipped to you inside a box. After unboxing, you can unroll the bed and let it expand to its full size.
Tempur-Pedic mattresses contain memory foam, so you’ll likely experience some off-gassing, which is like a new car smell for mattresses. The company says the odor should fully dissipate within a week or two and that airing out the mattress should help with this process.

My Verdict
I think Tempur-Pedic is an exceptional brand for those looking for some of the best beds in the memory foam space. There are lots of different sleepers that I feel could like these mattresses. Among these groups are average and lightweight individuals. However, some heavier sleepers may feel more comfortable on the firmer hybrid Tempur-Pedic models.
I recommend this brand for side and back sleepers, who could benefit from the pressure-relieving capabilities of Tempur-Pedic’s proprietary memory foams. Additionally, couples who worry about disturbing each other with movement should love the motion isolation that memory foam can provide.
