Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Review Highlights

Tuft & Needle quickly became one of the most popular bed-in-a-box mattress companies thanks to the Original Tuft & Needle mattress. Its unique responsive foam feel and exceptional quality at an affordable price earned Tuft & Needle countless happy customers.

Tuft & Needle later introduced the more luxurious Tuft & Needle Mint mattress. You can think of this bed as a spruced-up version of Tuft &Needle’s fan-favorite Original mattress. With more generous adaptive foam layers, the Mint mattress is softer, cooler, and more responsive. It’s also one of the best mattresses that we’ve come across at supporting proper spine alignment, critical for sleepers with aches and pains.

We’ve put the Mint mattress to the test at the Mattress Advisor lab to help you decide if this is the right bed for you. In this review, we’ll share the Mint’s pros and cons, the buying experience, how customers feel about it, and more.

What Makes The Mint Stand Out:

  • Referred to as the “enhanced” Tuft & Needle mattress, the Mint mattress is one step up from the original Tuft & Needle—but still priced economically.
  • The Adaptive® Foam in the Mint mattress is made with 30% more heat-wicking graphite than the Original Tuft & Needle mattress, helping you stay cool throughout the night.
  • The Mint mattress scored especially high in our spine alignment and responsiveness tests, making it a great option for side sleepers and combination sleepers.

Mattress Pros and Cons

✅ Pros

  • Spine alignment: One of the most important things a mattress can do for your health and sleep quality is support healthy spine alignment. With a score of 9.5/10 for spine alignment, the Mint mattress is one of the best beds for a healthy body.
  • Responsiveness: Responsiveness is a measure of how easy it is to move around on a mattress. With a score of 8.75/10 for responsiveness, you’ll never feel stuck on the Mint mattress.
  • Cooling: The Mint is cool for an all-foam mattress. Open-cell foam supports breathability and cooling gel beads disperse body heat away from the mattress surface.
  • Sleep Trial: Tuft & Needle backs every one of their mattresses with a risk-free 100-night sleep trial. Any time during the first 100 nights, you can return your mattress for a full refund.

❌ Cons

  • Off-Gassing: The Mint mattress may have a mild off-gassing odor when you unbox it. Don’t worry, the scent isn’t harmful, thanks to Tuft & Needle’s high-quality CertiPUR-US certified foam. It will fade within a day or two, if not sooner.
  • Lacking Support: The Mint’s all-foam construction means it doesn’t have the level of support needed by most plus-size people. If you’re a plus-size sleeper, consider reviewing our best mattresses for big & tall people guide.

Responsiveness

Combination sleepers are one of the few groups that tend to have complaints about all-foam mattresses. The reason? Foam beds sometimes allow the body to sink in too far, making it hard to switch from one position to the next. This is particularly true of the traditional memory foam mattress.

We had our sleep testers change sleeping positions, rating the mattress on how quickly they become comfortable in the new position. The Tuft & Needle mattress earned an impressive 8.75/10, making it one of the easiest all-foam beds to move around on.

Spine Alignment

For a healthy and restorative night’s sleep, it’s critical that a mattress can support proper spine alignment. To evaluate how well a mattress supports the spine, we have our sleep testers lie on their sides and examine their spines. We want to see a neutral spine, demonstrated by a straight line from the base of the spine to the top of the neck.

As you can see below, our sleep testers had nearly perfect spine alignment, earning the Mint a 9.5/10 for this test. If you’re someone who has back pain, or if you simply care about posture and spine health, you may want to consider the Mint mattress.

Pressure Relief

When you lie down on a mattress, you want your body weight to be evenly distributed. Side sleepers in particular struggle when too much weight accumulates at their hips and shoulders. A mattress that provides pressure relief cushions these areas, relieving pain and supporting deep sleep.

To examine a mattress’s ability to cushion pressure points, we have our sleep testers lie down on the mattress with a pressure sensing mat beneath them. We then see if there are any troublesome high pressure areas.

Take a look below to see our pressure relief test results for RJ and Asha. We mainly saw areas of low pressure (blues and greens on the heat map), though Asha had some red tones in her hips and shoulders showing slight pressure. Overall, we gave the Mint an 8 out of 10 for pressure relief, which is a pretty great score! Only lightweight side sleepers are likely to find the Mint too firm.

Is the Tuft & Needle Mint Firm?

The Tuft & Needle Mint mattress is a medium firmness mattress. It rates as a 5 on the 1-10 firmness scale. The top layer is plush yet responsive, while the transition layer limits excess sinkage. The resulting feel is one that’s soft and supportive.

Does It Match Different Types of Sleepers?

Side Sleepers

The Mint mattress was designed with side sleepers in mind. The comfort layer is plush, gently contouring to the body and relieving pain at pressure points. The medium firmness level is best bed for side sleepers who weigh more than 130 pounds. Those who are lighter may prefer an even softer mattress

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers should like the balanced feel of the Mint mattress. The mattress has a plush surface with the lower layers of foam providing impressive support. This combination supports healthy body alignment which is important for this sleeping position, making it a great bed for back sleepers.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers who like a relatively soft mattress also do well on the Tuft & Needle Mint. So long as you weigh less than 230 pounds, the Mint offers the right level of support and comfortable cushioning. If that doesn’t sound like you, visit our best beds for stomach sleepers page for more recommendations.

Combination Sleepers

The Mint is one of the best mattresses for combination sleepers for two reasons. First, the Mint supports every sleeping position well, so no matter what position you end up in, you’re likely to be comfortable. Next, the Mint is made from responsive polyfoam that makes it easy to switch from one position to the next.

How Well Does It Regulate Temperature?

The Mint mattress earned an impressive 8.5/10 for its cooling potential, making it an excellent choice for most hot sleepers. Cooling gel, graphite, and open-cell foam work together to keep the mattress surface cool. Only the hottest sleepers will find the Mint too warm. If this is you, consider checking out our top picks for the best cooling mattresses for hot sleepers.

Does It Support Heavier People?

The Mint mattress is best for sleepers who weigh less than 230 pounds. While some heavier sleepers, particularly side sleepers, will enjoy the Mint, most heavier people do better on a mattress with supportive innersprings. Consider one of our top picks for the best innerspring mattress or best hybrid mattress for added support.

Best Foundations for the Tuft & Needle Mint

The Tuft & Needle Mint mattress is compatible with most bed frames, including a traditional bed frame and box spring, a slatted base, or an adjustable frame. You’ll just want to make sure it’s resting on a sturdy foundation.

What’s Inside the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress?

The Mint’s proprietary Adaptive® Foam works to draw heat from your body and disperse it out of the mattress. It’s ideal for sleepers of any size or weight because the more pressure you put on it, the more it reacts to support you. The Tuft & Needle Mint is made with three adaptive foam layers and covered by a charcoal knitted cover.

Updated T&N Mint Layers
  1. Knit Cover: A thick grey cover that’s soft, stretchy, and breathable.
  2. Tuft & Needle Adaptive® Foam: Tuft & Needle Adaptive® foam is a polyfoam designed to feel responsive while still providing great pressure relief.
  3. Adaptive Transition Layer: Made with Tuft & Needle Adaptive® foam and infused with ceramic gel beads, this layer keeps sleepers cool.
  4. Base Layer: This foundational support layer provides support and structure.

We only have positive things to say about our experiences with their customer service reps. Here’s what customers have to say.

  • “The mattress itself was a little more firm than we expected it to be. Both my husband and I are fairly light though, both less than 130 pounds, so that may be part of it. When I shared that concern with a customer service person, they offered to send us a free topper to see if that would make things better. It did! We love our mattress now. Very impressive customer service.” Cris
  • “I chose T&N because of all of the reviews about the customer service and the return/refund policy, plus of course the good mattress reviews. I was not disappointed in either way. I’ve had the Mint mattress for six months now. The delivery process was a pleasure, and the mattress shows no signs of sagging…the customer service is amazing. I am now a customer for life.” -Delphine
  • “Beautiful and well made mattress, just a bit too stiff for me and my partner. The customer service was excellent throughout the whole process and the return!” -Seth

Reasons to Buy or Not Buy the Tuft & Needle Mint

The Tuft & Needle Mint mattress is one of very few beds that earned a score of 8.1/10 or higher in every category that influences sleep quality and performance. As such, the Mint is an all-around excellent all-foam mattress. If you’re someone who likes a bed that’s both soft and supportive, the Mint is an excellent choice.

The Mint is an especially good fit for couples thanks to great motion isolation properties and supportive edges. And with superb scores in our tests for spine alignment and pressure relief, we recommend the Mint for sleepers with aches and pains.

The Mint’s medium firmness works well for every sleeping position. However, some lightweight side sleepers may find it a bit too firm. If this is you, the Saatva plush soft mattress is a good option. And because the Mint is an all-foam bed, sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds may find it too soft. Check out the best mattresses for plus-size sleepers for a better fit.

The Mint vs Other Foam Mattresses

The Tuft & Needle Mint mattress is an all-foam mattress that costs less than the average foam mattress. It’s made using a proprietary type of polyfoam with a feel much different than memory foam mattresses. Rather than the memory foam deep cradling feel, the Mint offers a balanced foam feel that falls between sleeping “on” and “in” the mattress.

The Tuft & Needle responsive foam is easier to move around on than most foam beds. And thanks to cooling technology and open-cell foam, the Mint is cooler than the average foam mattress.

The Mint vs other Tuft & Needle Beds

The Mint mattress is a more luxurious version of the Tuft & Needle Original mattress. It has an additional layer of Adaptive foam, and it’s slightly softer than the Tuft & Needle Original. However, it is more expensive than the Tuft & Needle mattress.

Tuft & Needle also manufactures a hybrid mattress. Both the Mint and Tuft & Needle Hybrid have a medium firmness level, however, the Mint is slightly softer. In our in-house testing, we found that the Hybrid offers superior pressure relief and the Mint better spine alignment. Thanks to supportive innerspring coils, the Hybrid mattress is a better choice for heavy people.
