Score Breakdown

Setup Test

It took us just under a minute and a half to unbox the Zinus Green Tea mattress. This mattress was light as a feather, for being a mattress that is. However, once opened, it was flat as a pancake. It took about 24 hours to reach 90% of its full size.

So for our setup test, the Green Tea gets a 7.75 out of 10.

Motion Transfer Test

Motion transfer is just a fancy way of saying how much movement you feel if your partner is moving around. You want this to be pretty minimal.

Part A – The Humans

The Mattress Advisor motion transfer test is a two-part test. We start by asking both sleep subjects to lie on the bed, blindfolded, and rate on a scale from one to ten how much movement they felt when their partner was moving around with 10 being no movement at all.

While our sleep subjects were testing motion transfer on the Green Tea they couldn’t even tell when their partner got on and off the bed. So for the first part of our motion transfer test, they gave the Zinus Green Tea a 9.25.

Part B – The Wine Test

Next, comes our wine test. This is a great visual indicator of how much motion is being transferred from one side of the bed to another.

We had one of our sleep subjects lie down and roll back a forth a few times. We then took a look at how much the wine inside of the glass moved.

When our sleep subject got on the bed the wine was a little shakey. But when she started rolling around, it was very still. So we gave it an 8.75 for our wine test.

So for a total motion transfer score, the Green Tea gets a 9.

Edge Support Test

When choosing a mattress, you may not think to consider how much support the edge provides. But if you find yourself sleeping on the edge of your bed or use the end to get ready in the morning, you should definitely consider the edge support.

The Mattress Advisor edge support test is a two-part test.

Part A – The Shoe Test

To start, we asked our sleep subjects to sit on the edge of the bed to tie their shoes. They rated this task on a scale from one to ten, with 10 being “extremely easy, with exceptional edge support.”

When sitting on the edge of the Zinus, our sleep subjects noticed the edge was very weak, like they could slide right off. They gave it a 6 for the shoe test.

Part B – The Side Test

Next, we had our sleep subjects lie on the edge of the bed in each sleeping position, side, stomach and back, to see if they could sleep comfortably in that section of the bed.

Once again, our mattress testers felt the edge of the Zinus Green Tea had little to no support. They once again gave it a 6 for part two of our edge support test.

So the Green Tea gets a total score of 6 out of 10 for edge support.

Pressure Relief Test

When shopping for a mattress, you’ll want to find something that puts minimal pressure on your hips, thighs, and shoulders. This is especially important for athletes when it comes to joint pain. Let’s take a look at how well the Zinus Green Tea mattress provides pressure relief.

We measure pressure relief by using a pressure mapping film that shows areas of high pressure. Here’s what you need to know: the cool spots are good and the warms spots are bad. The warmer the color, the more pressure is being placed on that area of the body.

When our mattress testers were on the Green Tea we saw areas of high pressure in their shoulders.

So for a total pressure relief score, the Green Tea gets a 8 out of 10.

Spine Alignment Test

Did you know your sleeping posture is just as important as your posture when you are awake?  For every mattress we test, we take a look at how well it keeps your spine in a straight line.

We took a close up of both of our sleep subjects backs to see the alignment. You’ll want to see a straight line from the neck all the way to the tailbone.

While on the Zinus Green Tea, we were pleasantly surprised to see straight spines on our mattress testers. However, they noted that while this mattress supported their backs now, they felt as if the middle would sag overtime.

For spine alignment, the Green Tea gets a 9 out of 10.

Responsiveness Test

When it comes to getting comfortable on your mattress, responsiveness becomes very important. Responsiveness is just a fancy way of saying how well the mattress adjusts or responds to your sleeping positions while you sleep.

We had our mattress testers lie in each sleeping position, side, stomach and back. As they changed positions and got settled in, we asked them to rate on a scale from one to ten how quickly and easily the mattress responded to their movement.

Our sleep subjects noticed that the top layers of the Green Tea mattress was very soft and comfy. When they changed sleeping positions, they felt like the Zinus responded well to the change in body position. However, once past the comfort layers, the sleep subjects felt the base foam.

So the Zinus Green Tea scored an 8 out of 10 for responsiveness.

What to Watch Out For

  • Beware that the durability and support of mattresses under $500 won’t stand up over time. This doesn’t mean these mattresses aren’t comfy to sleep! Their lifespan is just shorter than most.
  • The Green Tea took longer than most to attain its full shape. In fact, Zinus acknowledged it could take up to 7 days to fully decompress
  • Be aware that your Zinus mattress may have a mild scent when you unbox it – this is normal and should go away within a few hours.
  • It may take up to 30 nights to get used to sleeping on your Green Tea mattress – particularly if your previous mattress was a traditional innerspring mattress.

Customer Reviews of the Zinus Green Tea Mattress

I have never owned a memory foam mattress, so I have to admit I was a little disappointed in how long it took for it to rise to its full 8 inch thickness but my disappointment disappeared quickly once I laid down to sleep on my new bed. I am 49 years old and have never been able to fall asleep as quickly as I do now. Thank you Zinus, for making the best bed I’ve ever owned at a truly affordable price. John D.
I opened the packaging expecting a cheap mattress but was blown away with how nice the mattress looked and felt. Especially for how low the price was! I have been sleeping on this mattress (12" queen size) for about 2 weeks now and can say for sure that I would recommend this mattress to a friend. It's the perfect balance between soft and firm if you're unsure of what you like. Alison Stickel
Within a year this one is started sinking and it’s really giving a hard time while waking up. And because of that it gives me back pain. It was really good and all for about 8-9 months. Bennett Patel
