Those of you who sleep with a partner should keep an eye out for a bed with good motion isolation, so your sleep partner’s tossing and turning doesn’t wake you up. We put this factor to the test in our lab.
First, two of us lay on the mattress; one is blindfolded with a sleep mask. The other gets in and out of bed, tosses, turns, and rolls around, so the blindfolded partner can feel how much motion is being transferred. We then switched and averaged our score together. Collectively, we gave it a 9 out of 10.
Then, we move on to the wine test. We noticed some of the wine slightly move as I got in and out of bed, but there were only small movements in the liquid as I rolled around. We gave the mattress a 9 out of 10 on the wine test as well.
Unfortunately, the Zoma Hybrid had less than impressive pressure point relief on our pressure map. When our testers lay on their back, the pressure relief was very good in the lower back area, meaning Zoma Hybrid offers great relief for back sleepers.
However, when they lay on their sides, you can see the pressure concentration lies in the hips, shoulders, and even elbows. Therefore, we do not recommend this bed if you suffer from hip or shoulder pain.
One great thing side sleepers get from the Zoma Hybrid is spinal alignment. This is crucial if you have back pain, because it keeps your posture great as you sleep, so no twists or kinks in your back.
The only thing keeping alignment from being a 10 out of 10 is the hips. Notice how they sink a bit deeper than the shoulders. Otherwise, the alignment is nearly perfect.
After our lab test, we think the Zoma Hybrid works for most sleeping positions but not all. Back sleepers get nearly perfect pressure point relief, because the top comfort layer conforms to the spine. Stomach sleepers don’t see too much pressure either and sleep well with medium firmness. Combination sleepers get good responsiveness. Side sleepers get great spine alignment, however, they also get bad pressure point relief.
Since Zoma has added coils to their mattress, it gets even cooler than before. The mattress cover wicks away moisture and body heat, the gel memory foam keeps you cool, and the innerspring system provides airflow that lets excess body heat escape.
The Zoma Hybrid has a weight limit of 400 pounds per person (this is 800 pounds for a queen size and above). This weight limit plus the coil spring system means most body shapes and sizes will be supported. However, some plus-sized sleepers may want to look for a firmer bed to keep from premature sagging.
The Zoma Hybrid works best with platform bases: both solid and slatted. If you choose a slatted platform, make sure the slats lay no more than 3 inches apart and are at least half an inch thick. Zoma does not recommend using a box spring with this mattress.
It’s time to look inside the Zoma Hybrid to see what makes this bed improve your athletic performance.

Zoma Hybrid comes in a rectangular box that’s about three and a half feet tall. It took us a little under a minute and a half to unbox the mattress. It wasn’t too heavy (though we’d still recommend unboxing with a partner, and there were almost no off-gassing effects—one of the best unboxing and setup experiences we’ve had.

The Zoma Hybrid is a quality mattress that offers deeper sleep for athletes and active people, from the top layer of zoned support to the bottom layer of support foam. After testing it in our lab, we think it works best for back sleepers and combination sleepers. It is also great for people who share the bed.
This bed may not be for you if you’re a side sleeper prone to pressure point aches and pains or if you’re shopping on a budget. While Zoma Hybrid has a reasonable price point, there are good hybrid beds that fall under $1,000. If you check any of these boxes, Zoma Hybrid may not be the best bed for you. Instead we recommend the Brooklyn Bowery Hybrid: it does well in almost every area, and it’s a good budget hybrid mattress.
In the online mattress industry, the Zoma Hybrid is comparable to the Bear Hybrid or the Casper Hybrid. Bear Hybrid is also made for athletes, has better alignment and durability, but has worse motion isolation and edge support. Casper Hybrid has similar materials and does well in all the same areas as Zoma Hybrid.
The original Zoma mattress is a memory foam mattress with almost identical layers to the Hybrid. The only difference is that the hybrid has individually wrapped springs. The all-foam mattress feels more plush than the hybrid and has less breathability. However, the foam bed has better pressure relief.
