Zoma Hybrid Mattress Review Highlights

Best Mattresses for Athletes - Mattress Advisor

If you are an athlete, or even just live an active lifestyle, Zoma has created the hybrid mattress for you. But does it live up to the hype? That’s what we’ll uncover in this review. We’ll go over the pros and cons, how it scored in our lab test, prices, FAQs, and much more.

Keep reading to find out more about the Zoma Hybrid.

What sets it apart:

  • The Zoma Hybrid offers more bounce and responsiveness than the OG Zoma foam mattress.
  • Like the original Zoma Sports mattress, the Zoma Hybrid is made specially with athletes, and their recovery, in mind.
  • This bed had one of the best unboxing experiences of any hybrid bed-in-a-box we’ve opened.

Best and Worst Highlights

✅ Pros

  • Easy Setup: We got the Zoma Hybrid completely unboxed in under 2 minutes and there were nearly no off-gassing effects: perfect if you have a sensitive nose or want to sleep on your bed right away.
  • Responsiveness: If you fall asleep in one position and wake up in a different position, Zoma Hybrid may just be the bed for you. It easily adjusts to your nighttime movements.
  • Edge Support: A mattress with good edge support is a mattress you can both sleep and lounge on. This is an especially good quality to have in a mattress if your partner takes up most of the bed and you’re left with the edge.

❌ Cons

  • Pressure Relief: Zoma Hybrid is a recovery mattress made for athletes. Pressure point relief is great for back sleepers, but not so much for side sleepers. So, side sleeping athletes may have a rough time fighting any shoulder or hip pain.
  • Social Impact: Zoma focuses most of their energy on giving athletes great sleep, so they don’t do too much in the social impact world.

Motion Transfer

Those of you who sleep with a partner should keep an eye out for a bed with good motion isolation, so your sleep partner’s tossing and turning doesn’t wake you up. We put this factor to the test in our lab.

First, two of us lay on the mattress; one is blindfolded with a sleep mask. The other gets in and out of bed, tosses, turns, and rolls around, so the blindfolded partner can feel how much motion is being transferred. We then switched and averaged our score together. Collectively, we gave it a 9 out of 10.

Then, we move on to the wine test. We noticed some of the wine slightly move as I got in and out of bed, but there were only small movements in the liquid as I rolled around. We gave the mattress a 9 out of 10 on the wine test as well.

Pressure Relief

Unfortunately, the Zoma Hybrid had less than impressive pressure point relief on our pressure map. When our testers lay on their back, the pressure relief was very good in the lower back area, meaning Zoma Hybrid offers great relief for back sleepers.

However, when they lay on their sides, you can see the pressure concentration lies in the hips, shoulders, and even elbows. Therefore, we do not recommend this bed if you suffer from hip or shoulder pain.

Spinal Alignment

One great thing side sleepers get from the Zoma Hybrid is spinal alignment. This is crucial if you have back pain, because it keeps your posture great as you sleep, so no twists or kinks in your back.

The only thing keeping alignment from being a 10 out of 10 is the hips. Notice how they sink a bit deeper than the shoulders. Otherwise, the alignment is nearly perfect.

On the Firmness Scale

The Zoma is about a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, which is classified as medium-firm. This type of firmness works well for most types of sleepers (most body types and most sleep positions) as it’s not too soft and it’s not too firm.

Does It Match Your Sleep Type?

After our lab test, we think the Zoma Hybrid works for most sleeping positions but not all. Back sleepers get nearly perfect pressure point relief because the top comfort layer conforms to the spine, so we think it is certainly a good mattress for back sleepers who are light or average weight. The Zoma Hybrid is also a good mattress for lightweight stomach sleepers who don’t see too much pressure either and can sleep well with medium firmness. Combination sleepers get good responsiveness, so it can be a good bed if you switch positions at night. Side sleepers get great spine alignment, however, they also get bad pressure point relief. For better recommendations, head over to our best beds for side sleepers page.

Will You Sweat on the Mattress?

Since Zoma has added coils to their mattress, it gets even cooler than before. The mattress cover wicks away moisture and body heat, the gel memory foam keeps you cool, and the innerspring system provides airflow that lets excess body heat escape.

Does It Support Your Body Type?

The Zoma Hybrid has a weight limit of 400 pounds per person (this is 800 pounds for a queen size and above). This weight limit plus the coil spring system means most body shapes and sizes will be supported. However, some plus-sized sleepers may want to look for a firmer bed to keep from premature sagging.

Do You Need a Specific Bed Frame?

The Zoma Hybrid works best with platform bases: both solid and slatted. If you choose a slatted platform, make sure the slats lay no more than 3 inches apart and are at least half an inch thick. Zoma does not recommend using a box spring with this mattress.

The Inside Layers

It’s time to look inside the Zoma Hybrid to see what makes this bed improve your athletic performance.

inside zoma hybrid
  1. Mattress Cover: This ventilated, breathable cover keeps you from getting too sweaty at night by wicking away moisture from your body.
  2. Comfort Layer: A gel memory foam layer that has zoned support Triangulex foam for a pressure-relieving sleep and muscle recovery.
  3. Responsive Foam: The Reactiv foam in this layer adds cushioning and responsiveness to the mattress.
  4. Pocketed Coils: High-quality coils add even more support and responsiveness to the mattress.
  5. Base Layer: High-density polyfoam offers a support layer for the mattress, preventing sinkage and sagging.

The Experience of Setting Up the Mattress

Zoma Hybrid comes in a rectangular box that’s about three and a half feet tall. It took us a little under a minute and a half to unbox the mattress. It wasn’t too heavy (though we’d still recommend unboxing with a partner, and there were almost no off-gassing effects—one of the best unboxing and setup experiences we’ve had.

Real Customer Reviews

  • “I am a professional athlete who trains all day and has previous neck/back injuries. This mattress has made a huge difference in how I feel every day. I sleep better each night and feel much less sore and even stopped needing to see the chiropractor as often. 10/10 recommend” – Addyson C.
  • “I was a little skeptical about ordering the mattress and not liking it. Boy was I wrong!! I’ve slept like a baby every night on this thing. I did a lot of research and decided on the Zoma because reviews claimed it was great for side sleepers. They were right! I’ve always had back issues with numbness/pain and this mattress delivered on the right support for me. Thanks zoma!” – Rosie H.
  • “I love my Zoma mattress. I have back injuries from martial arts and the Zoma mattress lets me get deep restful sleep, but it is helping with the healing of my back.” – Alan S.

Is the Zoma Hybrid for You?

The Zoma Hybrid is a quality mattress that offers deeper sleep for athletes and active people, from the top layer of zoned support to the bottom layer of support foam. After testing it in our lab, we think it works best for back sleepers and combination sleepers. It is also great for people who share the bed.

This bed may not be for you if you’re a side sleeper prone to pressure point aches and pains or if you’re shopping on a budget. While Zoma Hybrid has a reasonable price point, there are good hybrid beds that fall under $1,000. If you check any of these boxes, Zoma Hybrid may not be the best bed for you. Instead we recommend the Brooklyn Bowery Hybrid: it does well in almost every area, and it’s a good budget hybrid mattress.

Is Zoma Hybrid Like Other Mattresses?

In the online mattress industry, the Zoma Hybrid is comparable to the Bear Hybrid or the Casper Hybrid. Bear Hybrid is also made for athletes, has better alignment and durability, but has worse motion isolation and edge support. Casper Hybrid has similar materials and does well in all the same areas as Zoma Hybrid.

The original Zoma mattress is a memory foam mattress with almost identical layers to the Hybrid. The only difference is that the hybrid has individually wrapped springs. The all-foam mattress feels more plush than the hybrid and has less breathability. However, the foam bed has better pressure relief.
