Side sleepers and couples looking for a reasonably priced memory foam bed will find a lot to love with both Layla and Puffy. Layla’s mattresses are known for their dual-sided firmness options, which means you can flip the mattress to choose a harder or softer sleep experience. Puffy only has one medium-firm mode but edges out Layla in a couple areas, including cooling and isolating movement to the other side of the bed.

In this review, we’ll compare the Puffy Original with the Layla Mattress so you can better choose which is the right memory foam mattress for you.

Key Similarities

  • Firmness: Both Puffy and Layla are memory foam mattresses; each has one “medium-firm” side that scored a 7 out of 10 on our firmness scale. (The Layla’s softer side scored a 4 out of 10.)
  • Responsiveness: Both mattresses scored high in responsiveness, which means it’s easier to shift positions in the night on these mattresses.
  • Pressure relief: The Puffy Original scored a 8 out of 10 for pressure relief, which makes it a great option for side sleeping and easing aches and pains overnight. Layla’s mattress performed even better in this department, with a 9 out of 10.
  • Good for couples: Both mattresses do a great job at isolating motion, so couples can better sleep without being disrupted by each other’s nighttime movements.

Key Differences

  • Customized firmness: The Layla’s dual-side flippability is its superpower—back and side sleepers can use the medium-firm side; side sleepers and those who prefer a more forgiving surface can rest easy on the soft side.
  • Price: Without sales deals, Puffy’s queen costs about $700 more than Layla’s, which is a significant difference at the $1,000 to $2,000 price level. However, deals from Puffy can bring the price down considerably.
Puffy Original

Puffy Original Review Highlights

The Puffy Original is a memory foam mattress that meets the needs of most side and back sleepers, due to its five-layer stack of supportive, medium-firm memory foam. It’s also a great bed for couples, as it scored high in our motion transfer test, which means the movements of your partner’s nighttime sheet wrestling won’t carry over to your side of the bed. Memory foam mattresses aren’t known for their support around the far reaches of the bed, but the Puffy manages pretty well at this, earning an 8.75 out of 10 in our testing of edge support.

Those who sleep hot might opt for a different brand—although the Puffy scored a decent 8 out of 10 for cooling due to its use of gel-infused foam (better than the Layla, which came away with a 7.5), many classic innerspring and hybrid models outperformed it in this category.

In addition to the Original, Puffy also sells the Lux Hybrid, which adds a sixth layer of foam for a plusher feel, and the Puffy Royal Hybrid, which has seven layers and even more height.Unboxing and setting up the Puffy is an easy process—the mattress is lightweight and easy to maneuver out of its packaging and onto your bed within minutes.

Best for:

  • Side sleepers
  • Memory foam shoppers
  • People with back and joint pain
  • Couples

Layla Review Highlights

The Layla mattress is all about customization, thanks to its dual-side flippability. Flip the mattress to its firm side, and you’ll get excellent support for back sleeping and an easier time repositioning yourself at night. Turn the mattress to its soft side, and you’ll get a plusher night of sleep that relieves pressure on joints but doesn’t allow for too much sinkage. The Layla’s other biggest standout quality is its responsiveness—the mattress earned a 9.5 out of 10 in our testing, indicating that this is a good bed for those who like to switch positions throughout the night.

The Layla also provides excellent pressure relief—in our testing we found that it puts minimal stress on pressure points like shoulders and hips, and incorporates a copper-infusion technology in its top layers that offsets pressure and heat with a cooling and calming effect.

Much like the Puffy Original, the Layla is a great bed for motion isolation, earning a solid 8.5 out of 10 in our testing (as compared to the Puffy’s exceptional 9.25). This means couples who share a bed—or anyone who sleeps with a pet—will have an easier time sleeping without being disrupted by a bedmate’s movements. Also like the Puffy, Layla’s mattress tends to sleep warmer than most due to its use of memory foam. Hot sleepers might prefer a different bed.

Layla gives its buyers a 120-night sleep trial period and a lifetime limited warranty. We found this bed to have excellent shipping and return policies—the brand ships the mattress for free and provides free returns; it should arrive within 3-7 days of ordering.

Best for:

  • Side sleepers
  • Back sleepers (on the firmer side)
  • Memory foam shoppers
  • Budget shoppers
  • Those who want multiple firmness options

Puffy Layers

Inside the Puffy Original Mattress

The Puffy Original memory foam mattress is made up of five overall layers. From top to bottom, there’s a stain-resistant cover layer, a gel-infused foam layer for better cooling, a supportive “Climate Comfort” foam layer for continuous pressure relief at all temperatures, a higher-density foam layer to add longevity, and a grip base layer to hold it all in place.

Here’s more about what’s inside:

  1. Stain-Resistant Cloud Cover: This zip-off cover makes the mattress easier to wash and keep clean.
  2. Cooling Cloud Foam: At the top of the bed, a layer of memory foam supports your body and keeps you from sleeping too hot.
  3. Climate Comfort Foam: Designed to provide continuous pressure relief, this temperature-stable layer won’t contract or expand in the heat or cold.
  4. Firm Core Support Foam: This higher-density foam layer gives the mattress more support and structure, while adding durability.
  5. Grip Base Cover: At the base of the mattress, this layer holds it all in place and keeps the mattress from sliding on its frame or foundation.

Inside the Layla Mattress

On both sides of Layla mattress, you’ll find a removable mattress cover made of a soft and stretchy fabric blend that’s designed to be super-cozy. The soft side of the mattress has a three-inch layer of copper-infused memory foam, while the firm side has just a one-inch layer of the same foam. Between the two, there’s an “Airflow Support Foam” layer designed to improve breathability and provide targeted support to the areas that need it most, like your lumbar region. And finally, there’s a four-inch polyfoam support core at the center of the mattress, which makes it more durable and less prone to sagging over time.

Here’s more about what’s inside:

  1. Cooling Cover – Soft Side: This cover is super-soft and breathable, with cooling technology designed to activate with your body heat. There’s a zipper on the cover and built-in handles so it’s easy to move and flip the mattress.
  2. Copper-Gel Memory Foam: On the soft side of the mattress, this layer is 2.5 inches thick for a plusher feel with more pressure relief. The foam on this side is higher density and contours more closely to your body.
  3. Max Airflow Support Foam: This layer of polyfoam gives the mattress more support.
  4. Support Core Foam: Another layer of foam adds more structure and stability to the mattress, and minimizes bounce. It also ensures the mattress will last longer before breaking down.
  5. Copper-Gel Memory Foam: On this side of the mattress, a one-inch layer of low-density memory foam adds a little softness to an otherwise firm surface and high responsiveness, so it’s easy to move around.
  6. Cooling Cover – Firm Side: The firm side also has a soft, breathable cover—the two sides are labeled so you know which is which.

Motion transfer

We tested both mattresses to determine how well they limit motion from transferring to the other side of the bed. The Puffy Original earned a 9.25, which makes it a stellar option for couples because it can suppress the effects of your partner’s tossing and turning. If you add weight to one side of the bed, it won’t cause the other side to move. The Layla mattress scored an 8.5 for motion transfer, indicating that it performs almost as well as the Puffy in this department. We used the red wine test to determine how well this mattress stops movement, which involved positioning a glass of red wine on one side of the mattress and a test subject on the other. Our tester moved, but the wine stayed upright.

Edge support

Edge support measures how much resistance the bed provides around its edges—a mattress with low edge support makes it more difficult to spread out or sit at the edge of the bed. Good news here: Both the Puffy and Layla performed well in this department, with the Puffy earning an 8.75 for edge support, and the Layla scoring a 9. This suggests that neither mattress is prone to sagging along the sides and corners.

Responsiveness

A mattress with good responsiveness makes it far easier to move around the bed without feeling trapped in one position. Both mattresses performed well here: The Layla scored a near-perfect 9.5, suggesting you’ll have no problems changing positions or resituating yourself in the night. The Puffy earned a 9, which makes it nearly as good as the Layla for combination sleepers and those who toss and turn.

Which Is the Best Mattress for You?

Puffy’s medium-firm memory foam mattress is a great option for side sleepers due to its spine alignment and ability to alleviate pressure in the shoulders, hips, and lower back. It’s also a good bed for couples, thanks to an exceptional ability to limit motion to one side of the bed.

Layla’s dual-sided, flippable memory foam mattress also does an excellent job of supporting your spine and limiting movement, but gives you more firmness options. Depending on which side of the mattress you use, the bed gives you a 4 out of 10 for firmness, or a 7 out of 10 (matching the Puffy). This makes it a good mattress for more types of sleepers—though those who like a medium-firm bed will be well-served by either option.
