The Puffy mattress is a moderately-priced luxury memory foam mattress. Its upper comfort layer is made from low-density memory foam with a cloud-like feel. The generous soft give of the Puffy top layer makes it the better choice for lightweight people and most side sleepers. Another perk of the Puffy is exceptional spine alignment that eases back pain and stiffness.

The Nectar mattress is thicker than the Puffy and has a more durable feel. The foam within is higher density and feels more like a traditional memory foam mattress than the Puffy. These attributes make it a better fit for heavier sleepers, as well as those who like a close contouring feel. It deeply hugs the body, providing slightly superior pressure relief when compared to the Puffy.

Key Similarities

Compare Mattress Materials

With proprietary technology, the Puffy and Nectar mattresses yield different sleeping experiences. In this section, we’ll dive into each bed’s construction and outline how it impacts the mattress’s feel.

Inside the Puffy Mattress

The flagship Puffy is a medium-firm mattress made from 3 layers of foam. When you lie on the Puffy, you’ll be met with an ultra-soft feel that’s quickly balanced by full-body support. Let’s dive in and see what materials combine to create the unique Puffy mattress feel.

Inside the Puffy mattress
  • Puffy’s first layer is 2” of proprietary Cooling Cloud foam. This low-density memory foam is wonderfully plush, yielding instantaneously to any pressure. It’s this immediate cushion that makes the Puffy one of the best mattresses for both side sleepers and lightweight sleepers. Cooling gel is dispersed throughout this upper comfort layer, stealing heat from the mattress surface for optimal temperature regulation.
  • It’s the second layer that’s primarily responsible for Puffy’s ability to keep the spine in a healthy, neutral alignment. Two inches of ClimateComfort memory foam conform to the body’s unique shape, dissipating weight from pressure points and distributing it evenly across the body. If you’re someone who wakes up with back pain or stiffness, this layer might be just what’s needed to ease the discomfort.
  • The final layer is crafted from 6” of support foam. This polyfoam base layer is incredibly responsive thanks to Puffy’s exclusive Insta-Firm technology. Insta-Firm was created to counter sinkage, facilitate ease of movement, and dampen motion transfer along the surface.
  • The last aspect of construction that sets the Puffy apart is its comfortable, stain-resistant mattress cover. If you spill something, all you need to do is unzip it and machine wash it.

Inside the Nectar Mattress

The Nectar mattress is a 4-layer memory foam bed with a medium-firm feel. Nectar’s layers of memory foam create a traditional memory foam mattress feel—one that deeply contours the body. It’s a sensation of sleeping more “in” than “on” the surface.

Inside the Nectar Mattress
  • The Nectar comfort layers are crafted from 2 layers of foam. The first layer is a soft, airy gel foam that’s quilted into the mattress cover. It’s this layer that makes it easy to sink your hand into the surface, and it delivers immediate pressure relief
  • Underneath is a second layer of 3” of gel memory foam that the body sinks into, resulting in a deep hugging feel that promotes even weight distribution.
  • Separating the plush comfort layers from the supportive base layer is 1.75” of Nectar’s Adaptive Hi Core memory foam. This firm yet pliable foam stops the body from sinking in too far, helping to keep the body properly aligned.
  • The final layer of the Nectar mattress is a high-density polyfoam support layer. It’s this structurally sound foam that’s responsible for the impressive longevity of the Nectar bed. It also leads to a responsive feel and reliable edge support
  • Around these layers of memory foam is a breathable tencel cover that’s exceptionally soft. You can easily remove and machine-wash the Nectar cover.

Final Summary: What Is the Best Mattress?

At our in-house testing facility, the Puffy outscored the Nectar mattress, earning a 9/10 in comparison to Nectar’s 8.7/10. But this composite score doesn’t tell the whole store. Each of these mattresses are high-quality beds manufactured by companies committed to customer satisfaction. What’s the best mattress for one person may not be the right fit for someone else.

The Nectar mattress is the go-to for the indecisive shopper. They offer a 365-night sleep trial, which is much longer than Puffy’s 101-night trial. Nectar’s feel is more like traditional memory foam than the Puffy, meaning you’ll feel deeply hugged and contoured. Its thicker profile and conforming transition layer make the Nectar a better choice for sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds.

The Puffy boasts an exceptionally plush comfort layer that allows lighter sleepers to sink in easily. For this reason, the Puffy is one of the best medium-firm mattresses for sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds—especially side sleepers. It’s also one of our favorite mattresses for couples because it dampens motion transfer, is responsive, and has a feel that suits most sleepers.
