Key Similarities

  • Firmness: Both are medium-firm mattresses, the preferred firmness level for most sleepers since it’s not too soft and not too firm.
  • Mattress Type: The Purple and DreamCloud mattresses are hybrid beds, meaning they use foam and innerspring systems.
  • Cost: Both mattresses have similar prices that are slightly lower than the average hybrid mattress.

Key Differences

  • Body Type: The DreamCloud is thicker and better at supporting heavier bodies, while the Purple’s Comfort Grid delivers a superior surface for lightweight people.
  • Feel: The Purple’s grid-like comfort layer has a floating feel while the DreamCloud has a firmer foam feel.
  • Sleeping Positions: While both beds are excellent for back sleepers, the Purple bed is better for side sleepers and the DreamCloud mattress for stomach sleepers
  • Couples: The DreamCloud mattress scored higher than the Purple in our motion isolation and edge support tests, which evaluate two of the most important performance functions for those who co-sleep.
The Purple Mattress

Purple Mattress Review Highlights

  • Floating Feel: Purple’s top layer is made from a proprietary polymer grid called the Smart Comfort Grid. This material flexes under pressure in a way that evenly supports the body from head to toe. The feel that it creates is a weightless, floating sensation.
  • Spine Alignment: The Purple mattress earned a nearly perfect 9.5/10 on our test for spine alignment. By supporting the natural curvature of the spine, the Purple supports healthy posture and relieves neck and back pain.
  • Pressure Relief: The Purple Grid comfort layer offers the same pressure-relieving benefits of memory foam without the sinking feeling. Paired with a layer of soft high-density polyfoam and you have a mattress great for side sleepers.
  • Cooling: The Purple Grid top layer is ultra-breathable and shouldn’t trap heat the way that all-foam beds do. This breathability makes the Purple a good option for hot sleepers.
  • More Options: If you’re looking for more bounce and responsiveness in your Purple mattresses, check out the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. Purple also sells a children’s mattress, the Kid’s Purple.
DreamCloud Premier

 DreamCloud Mattress Review Highlights

  • High Scoring Mattress: The DreamCloud is one of the highest-scoring hybrids that we’ve tested at the Mattress Advisor lab. It earned a high score in every performance test, making it one of the best all-around mattresses that we’ve tested.
  • Great for Older People: The DreamCloud is easy to get in and out of thanks to a high profile and sturdy edges. It also does well at keeping the body properly aligned in every sleeping position, easing body aches and pains.
  • Good Couple’s Mattress: Couples need a bed with exceptional motion isolation and edge support. The DreamCloud excels in both of these categories, so you can move around without disturbing one another, and spread out.
  • Thick and Durable: At 14” thick, DreamCloud is one of the thickest hybrid mattresses around, thanks to generous layers of foam and a robust innerspring coil system.
  • Generous Trial Period and Warranty: DreamCloud’s 365-night sleep trial and lifelong warranty are some of the longest that you’ll find, even amongst other online mattress companies.
  • Two Options: Want your DreamCloud with some extra euro-top cushion? Check out the DreamCloud Premier mattress for a bed with an added pillow top or the DreamCloud Premier Rest for even more luxury.

Compare the Inside of the Mattresses

We’re going to take a deep dive into what makes up each of these mattresses. By exploring the composition layer-by-layer and comparing the two, you’ll get a good idea of what to expect from each bed.

Inside the Purple Mattress

The flagship Purple mattress is a 3-layer hybrid bed. The first layer is what really sets the Purple mattress apart from the DreamCloud and other hybrid mattresses. Purple engineered a hyper-elastic polymer material that boasts the pressure-relieving benefits of memory foam with a completely different feel. The gel grid flexes and collapses once enough weight is applied, achieving a floating feel and even weight distribution.

The dynamic support offered by the Purple Grid supports the natural curvature of the spine while cushioning pressure points. Even though the mattress is a medium-firm bed, the top layer’s contouring makes it great for side sleepers, cradling the hips and shoulders. The balance between give and firmness fits the needs of back sleepers of every weight.

Beneath the Smart Comfort Grid is a layer of soft polyurethane foam that cushions heavier parts of the body. The base layer is a dense foam that contributes to the Purple’s edge support. Because this support layer isn’t crafted from innerspring coils, the Purple isn’t as responsive or bouncy as the DreamCloud mattress.

  1. SoftFlex Mattress Cover: A white cover that’s soft, stretchy, and breathable. The fabric is a blend of viscose, Lycra spandex, and polyester.
  2. Smart Comfort Grid Comfort Layer: Purple’s proprietary polymer grid evenly distributes weight and keeps the sleeping surface cool.
  3. Transition Foam: A layer of plush, high-density foam cushions heavier parts of the body while stopping excess sinkage
  4. Support Layer: A dense support foam adds edge support and durability.

Inside the DreamCloud Mattress

The DreamCloud mattress is a 5-layer memory foam hybrid mattress. The mattress cover is an ultra-soft cashmere fabric quilted into a soft layer of foam. The top layer is made from cooling gel memory foam. This layer is responsible for the slightly plush feel that you get when you lie on the DreamCloud.

Underneath the gel foam is a layer of high-density memory foam supported by transitional polyfoam. Combined, these layers closely contour the body without allowing it to sink. The sensation isn’t the deep hugging feel of memory foam mattresses, but instead feels like sleeping “on” the mattress surface.

Next is a thick layer of individually encased innerspring coils. The bouncy responsiveness of these coils makes the DreamCloud easier to move around on than the Purple bed, and it also results in a slightly cooler sleeping experience. Another perk of the coils is added durability and support, ideal for people who weigh more than 230 lbs.

  2. Memory Foam Layer: A gel memory foam comfort layer cushions pressure points and dissipates excess body heat
  3. Sink-In-Just-Right Layer: A foam that delivers gentle contouring and support to stop the body from sinking in too far.
  4. Base Layer: A high-density base foam that adds durability to the entire mattress.
  5. Support Layer: Pocketed coils add support, responsiveness, and ideal temperature regulation.

Edge Support

Not every mattress has sturdy edges. But for anyone who struggles to get in and out of bed, having reliable edges is essential for comfort and safety. Additionally, those sleeping with a partner enjoy utilizing the mattress’s full surface area.

The DreamCloud mattress has some of the best edge support of any mattress that we’ve tested. While the Purple mattress also has reliably supportive edges, they’re not as good for elderly people who need extra support for getting into bed.

Spine Alignment

One of the most important features of a mattress for how you feel come morning is how well it supports healthy spine alignment. While both mattresses earned high marks for spinal alignment, the Purple earned a nearly perfect 9.5/10. If you’re someone who has back pain, the Purple may be the better fit.

Responsiveness

Are you someone who tosses and turns a lot at night? If you do, you’ve probably noticed that some mattresses can make you feel stuck. Responsiveness is a measure of how easy it is to switch positions and get comfortable in the new position.

The DreamCloud bed boasts exceptional responsiveness, making it ideal for combination sleepers and those who move around a lot at night. The Purple mattress’s foam and Purple Grid construction don’t facilitate movement to the same degree.

The Bottom Line: Which Is the Best Mattress?

Purple is one of the best mattresses for sleepers with back pain. The Purple Grid supports healthy body alignment in back and side sleepers of every body weight while delivering ample cushion at pressure points

DreamCloud’s medium-firm foam feel and responsive innerspring coils balance give and support. While it works for every sleeping position, it’s best for back and stomach sleepers. Heavier sleepers are better suited by the thick profile and generous support offered by the DreamCloud mattress.

Both mattresses come with a risk-free sleep trial, so you can try out your new bed in the comfort of your home before fully committing.
